Book Spotlight & Giveaway: A Cuppa Trouble

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour and Giveaway for A Cuppa Trouble by Angela Ruth Strong, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Title: A Cuppa Trouble
Series: The CafFUNated Mysteries #2
Author: Angela Ruth Strong
Publisher: Mountain Brook Ink
Release Date: July 1, 2019
Genre: Inspirational Cozy Mystery

Can a couple of baristas chase down a car thief without spilling a drop of their favorite drinks?

Plans for a Valentine's Day grand opening of a small town coffee shop go awry when the first customer is killed. Evidence points toward the victim being mixed up in a car theft ring, but shop owners Tandy and Marissa have reason to believe he was framed.

An assortment of suspects--from a pink-haired heir to Tandy's charming ex--all seem to know a little too much about grand theft auto.

Without approval from either their boyfriends or the gum-chewing FBI agent in charge, the shop owners go on stakeouts, plan stings, and pursue justice in a high-speed car chase. If they don't find the killer soon, it might be more than their love lives in trouble.

EXCERPT

Gravel crunched behind them. Tandy jerked to turn the direction of the sound.

The dark form of a man appeared from the street.

She gripped Connor’s arm. “Go, go, go. Back out.”

Connor shifted, but didn’t step on the gas. “I’d run him over.”

“He’ll get out of the way.” The form grew larger. A flashlight beam bounced over the interior of the truck. Was this the guy who stole her car? Was this the guy who’d murdered George? Connor looked over his shoulder.

“What if he doesn’t move?” Tandy reached across the bench seat to grab Connor’s jacket and shake some sense into him.

“What if he has a gun?”

“Then I don’t want to antagonize him.” Connor shifted into park. Tandy’s heart shot tingles down her arms and legs.

“Drive. What are you doing? What other choice do you have?” Connor wrapped his big arms around her. Did he think he was Superman and bullets couldn’t penetrate him? They were sitting ducks. Any criminal who found them here would know they were spying.

His nose nuzzled her temple.

What in the world? His mouth hovered by her ear, his breath less than pepperminty fresh.

“Haven’t you ever seen this in the movies?” he whispered. Even if she was single and interested, this was not the time. She pushed Connor’s chest.

“I don’t watch those kinds of movies.” Connor’s muscles stiffened underneath her palms.

“Spy movies.”

Why were they talking about spy movies? Why was Connor acting like he wanted to kiss her? They’d been following a car thief who might actually be a killer, and now that they were caught, he could kill them too. They needed to figure out a way to make this guy think they were here for some other reason. But why would anybody drive out into the woods at night and park unless…

“Spy movies!”

She grabbed Connor’s face and kissed like her life depended on it. Because it did.

What are you reading this weekend?

Have a great weekend! Happy reading!

About the Book:

A Cross-Country Trip through Regency England Brings Intrigue, Rogues, and High Adventure.

The must-read conclusion to Michelle Griep’s Bow Street Runners Trilogy: Life couldn’t be better for Abigail Gilbert—but it’s been a long time coming. Having lived with a family who hated her, love is finally within reach. Abby sets off on a journey across England to marry one of the most prestigious gentleman bachelors in the land—until highwaymen upset her plans and threaten her life.

Horse patrol captain Samuel Thatcher arrives just in time to save Abby. But to him she’s simply another victim in a job he’s come to despise. Tired of the dark side of humanity, he intends to buy land and retire.

Abby pleads with him to escort her on the rest of her journey. He refuses until she offers him the thing he desperately needs to achieve his goal: money. Delivering her safely will earn him more than enough to settle into a quiet life.

Book Review: Tranquility: A Prayer and Reflection Coloring Journal

About the Book:

Tranquility: A Prayer and Reflection Coloring Journal invites you to mix creative journaling and coloring into your personal time with God. Prayers that focus on topics such as being thankful, dealing with stress and heartache, caring for yourself and others, listening for God’s leading, and waiting patiently on Him will guide your thoughts and calm your spirit. Filled with more than 100 designs to color, plenty of space for journaling, and 40 needs-based prayers, Tranquility will help you express your devotion to God with your whole heart.

My Thoughts:

Tranquility: A Prayer and Reflection Coloring Journal from Tyndale Publishers is part of their Living Expressions Collection.

Most pages feature a brief devotional thought, correlating Scripture verse, lines to write on, and images to color. A few pages have alternate activities such as drawing or making lists. The journal covers a diversity of topics: friendship, peace, worship, prayer, kindness, and more. One particular quote that stood out to me thus far is found on page 20: “Please help me to remember that peace is not the absence of conflict; rather, it's having confident assurance in the middle of conflict.” These pages are filled with good reminders such as that.

I liked that the journal can be done in any order and that some pages have lots to color while others have less room to color – perfect for the busy days! Some of the pages are partially colored, so they are already pretty, but there's still room to add in your own flair.

If you are looking for a devotional and enjoy coloring, consider Tranquility: A Prayer and Reflection Coloring JournalHop over to the publisher's website to view an excerpt from Tranquility: A Prayer and Reflection Coloring Journal.

First Line Fridays: The King's Mercy by Lori Benton

Happy Friday!

First Line Fridays is hosted by Hoarding Books and participants share the first line from a nearby book.

Today I'm sharing the first lines from The King's Mercy by Lori Benton:

"Alex MacKinnon roused to the press of wood beneath his cheek and an ominous churning in his gut."

In case this one tidbit isn't enough for you, hop on over the the publisher's site to read an excerpt from The King's Mercy by Lori Benton.

Have you read this book? It released earlier this month so it's pretty new. You can read my review of this novel here.

What are you reading this weekend?

Have a great weekend! Happy reading!

About the Book:

For readers of Sara Donati and Diana Gabaldon, this epic historical romance tells of fateful love between an indentured Scotsman and a daughter of the 18th century colonial south.

When captured rebel Scotsman Alex MacKinnon is granted the king's mercy--exile to the Colony of North Carolina--he's indentured to Englishman Edmund Carey as a blacksmith. Against his will Alex is drawn into the struggles of Carey's slaves--and those of his stepdaughter, Joanna Carey.

A mistress with a servant's heart, Joanna is expected to wed her father's overseer, Phineas Reeves, but finds herself drawn instead to the new blacksmith. As their unlikely relationship deepens, successive tragedies strike the Careys. When blame falls unfairly upon Alex he flees to the distant mountains where he encounters Reverend Pauling, itinerant preacher and friend of the Careys, now a prisoner of the Cherokees.

Haunted by his abandoning of Joanna, Alex tries to settle into life with the Cherokees, until circumstances thwart yet another attempt to forge his freedom and he's faced with the choice that's long hounded him: continue down his rebellious path or embrace the faith of a man like Pauling, whose freedom in Christ no man can steal. But the price of such mercy is total surrender, and perhaps Alex's very life.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE NUMBER OF LOVE

The Number of Love by Roseanna M. White blends war-time intrigue, delicious romance, and lurking danger to create a captivating story that is unexpectedly thought-provoking.

Roseanna M. White's writing finesse shines in her prose and characters. My favorite character in The Number of Love is Margot. She fascinated me with her mathematical genius and unique way of thinking. The correlation between numbers and Margot's prayers prodded me to consider... Does God use our unique abilities and interests to speak to us in ways others might not understand? I think so.

What I loved most in The Number of Love was the author's treatment of God's silence during difficult times. I could identify with many of Margot's thoughts and emotions. Plenty of time is allotted to the examination of this issue and easy, pat answers are bypassed in favor of deep character development. Margot's struggle and resulting growth was a pleasure to observe.

The Number of Love is the first novel in The Codebreakers series by Roseanna M. White. It does have returning characters from her other novels, particularly A Song Unheard; however, it can be read as a stand-alone novel. I recommend this novel to readers who enjoy inspirational historical romances.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Book Review: The King's Mercy by Lori Benton

About the Book:

But the price of such mercy is total surrender, and perhaps Alex's very life.

My Thoughts:

The King's Mercy by Lori Benton possesses all the outstanding qualities of well-written novel. Beautiful prose, excellent pacing, and a compelling narrative created a story that held my attention from beginning to end.

I loved the realism in The King's Mercy. The main characters and some supporting characters experience severe losses. There is no sweeping restoration for them and their pain is deep. Yet, the author inserts themes of hope and mercy within the trials. To me, this just felt so authentic. Deep losses alter life and tidy, happy endings aren't guaranteed, but there is hope and, sometimes, a new beginning. A beautiful, inspiring message!

My favorite character in The King's Mercy was Alex MacKinnon. Though a strong, natural leader, the story commences with him nearly defeated, having lost his kin, his home, his freedom, and his faith. His resilience and personal growth created another beautiful facet to this story and demonstrated expert character development.

I recommend The King's Mercy by Lori Benton to all readers of historical fiction/romance. I loved The King's Mercy and, if I had time, I'd give it a second reading right now. Instead, it has a permanent home on my bookshelf where it can await future reading.

About the Book:

Boston, 2015

Two years after nearly losing her life in the Boston Marathon bombing, Annie David is still far from “Boston strong.” Instead she remains isolated and defeated—plagued by guilt over her niece, crippled in the blast, and by an antique ring alongside a hazy hero’s face. But when she learns the identity of her rescuer, will he be the hero she’s imagined? And can the long-past history of the woman behind the ring set her free from the guilt and fears of the present?

Boston, 1770
As a woman alone in a rebellious town, Liberty Caldwell finds herself in a dangerous predicament. When a British lieutenant, Alexander Smythe, comes to her rescue and offers her employment, Liberty accepts. As months go by, Alexander not only begins to share his love of poetry with her, but protects Liberty from the advances of a lecherous captain living in the officers’ house where she works.

Mounting tensions explode in the Boston Massacre, and Liberty’s world is shattered as her brother, with whom she has just reunited, is killed in the fray. Desperate and alone, she returns home, only to be assaulted by the captain. Afraid and furious toward redcoats, Liberty leaves the officers’ home, taking with her a ring that belonged to Alexander.

Two women, separated by centuries, must learn to face their fears. And when they feel they must be strong, they learn that sometimes true strength is found in surrender.

A 2018 Christy Award finalist!

 EXCERPT FROM VIGILANT

He waited until the little thief had almost reached him, then he jumped out and planted a hand on the kid’s chest, driving him up against the wall and holding him there with his forearm. “Give it back.”

The guy’s eyes were hard as flint. “I don’t think so.” He shoved against Daniel’s arm, but Daniel held him firmly in place.

With his free hand, he pushed back his jacket, far enough so the kid could see both his badge and the gun strapped across his chest, but no one else could. “Want to re-think that?”

If possible, the kid’s eyes grew harder. “Whatever.” He shoved the bag against Daniel’s stomach.

Daniel contemplated him as he took the bag. If the little criminal had seemed even the tiniest bit remorseful, he’d let him go without a qualm. Since he didn’t appear to be, Daniel would like nothing better than to arrest him and let him spend a night behind bars to cool off. Unfortunately, if he slapped cuffs on the guy in front of Nicole, the game would be up. It went against everything in him, but if he had to let a petty thief go in order to capture a much bigger prey, so be it.

May Recap and Expected June Reads!

May Reads:

Today I'm sharing a bit about what I've been reading and what I hope to read. In May, I finished:
  1. The Crossing at Cypress Creek by Pam Hillman. Read my review.
  2. Freedom's Ring by Heidi Chiavaroli
  3. No More Christian Nice Girl by Paul Coughlin and Jennifer D. Degler
  4. The Noble Guardian by Michelle Griep. Read my review.
  5. Wooing Cadie McCaffrey by Bethany Turner. Read my review.
As much as I liked these books, there was a clear winner this month and it was The Noble Guardian by Michelle Griep. It was amazing!

June Reads:

In June, I expect to read:

1. Return to Dignity by Marilyn Skinner. My current non-fiction read. The stories in this book are harder than expected to read and I'm taking my time. Thankful for the message of hope woven in the stories.

Book Review: Wooing Cadie McCaffrey by Bethany Turner

About the Book:

After four years with her boyfriend, Cadie McCaffrey is thinking of ending things.

Convinced Will doesn't love her in the "forever" way she loves him, Cadie believes it's time for her to let him go before life passes her by. When a misunderstanding leads to a mistake, leaving her hurt, disappointed, and full of regret, she finally sends him packing.

But for Will, the end of their relationship is only the beginning of his quest to figure out how to be the man Cadie wanted him to be. With the dubious guidance of his former pro-athlete work friends and tactics drawn from Cadie's favorite romantic comedies, Will attempts to win her back. It's a foolproof plan. What could possibly go wrong?

My Thoughts:

Wooing Cadie McCaffrey by Bethany Turner is a delightfully addictive romance novel with laugh-out-loud humor, a unique tone, and numerous romcom movie references. The story was cute from the beginning, but once I hit chapter ten, I didn't want to put it down.

My favorite character in Wooing Cadie McCaffrey was Will. He made mistakes, but his personal ambition and dedication to Cadie made him absolutely swoon-worthy. Conversely, Cadie made mistakes, but I found her slightly annoying. Her refusal to communicate during difficult times seemed immature for a woman in her mid-thirties. Fortunately, there's character development and I found myself rooting for them to get together in the end.

Though much of Wooing Cadie McCaffrey is humor and fun, deeper themes are present. The novel captures the real life tensions that Christian couples experience as they desire to be together, but aren't completely prepared to marry. The story explores how a lack of communication can negatively affect a relationship, but I wish there had been more page time dedicated to Will and Cadie actually practicing good communication... Maybe I just didn't want the novel to end. *wink*

I recommend Wooing Cadie McCaffrey by Bethany Turner to readers who enjoy romantic comedies. I read this novel twice before writing this review and I found it even more fun the second time around.
