Return to Yellowstone with the next generation of our beloved characters from the original series.

Saddlehorn, MT

Ashton Anderson, former town sweetheart and prodigal son of rancher Clint Anderson, has finally returned home. Where has he been for the last ten years, you ask? Apparently, working a smaller rodeo circuit up north. With his strength and skill, he should have done well, but he has returned battered, bruised, and grieving the loss of his faithful gelding, Dusty. As for the girlfriend who turned down his marriage proposal all those years ago . . .

Kelsey Winters has left her less-than-idyllic past behind. She now helps others as a therapist at the therapeutic riding center outside of town, although her own personal life seems to be a solid mess. She’s tried to be a good older sister to her brother, Darren, but she can’t protect him—or herself—from his poor choices. They’re one bad decision away from homelessness when they’re robbed and Darren is put in jail for possession of a controlled substance.

Due to circumstances beyond their control, Kelsey and Ashton’s long-ago romance resurfaces. But will it leave the gate running, or suffer a colossal wreck?

“Thanks for listening.”

“Any time,” he replied, and meant it.

A smile flickered on her lips. “I’m glad you’re back.” She eased forward in the space between them and when her gaze traveled to his lips, a deep inferno exploded in his gut.

Ashton found himself tempted to draw her into his arms and give into that desire that spiked through him.The old feelings, the attraction between them, zinged like a mosquito on speed. Her breath warmed his cheek and set his nerves on fire. He held her gaze for what seemed an eternity. Instinctively, Kelsey brushed a strand of hair that wasn't there over her ear.

This was not a good idea. He leaned away from her, creating distance.

“Yeah. Me too. I’m glad that we can move on from the past, Kels, and not allow our choices to hold us hostage.” Once again, those dark eyes sparkled and took a gander across his face. “You're not too shabby, you know. That could almost be considered wisdom.”

A smile twitched his lips.

Excerpt: The Hardest Climb

The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail....
Isaiah 32:2

Growing up, my family had the opportunity to visit Israel a few times. On my first trip, we had heard about a waterfall at En Gedi, the desert oasis where King David hid from Saul. Our trusted tour guide started our group on the right path and then left us to find our own way. It was summer, and the sun was intense. After barely five minutes, I was already feeling desperate for some ice water; the lukewarm bottle I carried wasn’t cutting it.

Shortly into the hike, we encountered a man coming down the trail toward us. His face flushed, he looked hot and worn out. As he passed he said, “Don’t waste your time, it’s not worth it.” We paused, discouraged. We’d heard that the waterfall was beautiful, but this new account made us doubt. Was it worth further misery? The unanimous decision was to keep going. We resumed our arduous and uncertain trek.

Somewhere along the trail, the trees that initially served as a canopy for us disappeared. The sky was pure blue and gave the sun’s rays a clear shot. The heat became more extreme and the “path” soon turned to dusty, stone “steps”. Occasionally, we got off track and had to retrace our steps to find where we had gone wrong. I felt somewhat lost in the desert and wondered how long until we reached the end and if I’d have enough strength.

Finally, exhausted, we found the oasis. It was located in a protective rock cove and covered in vegetation. As I descended the path down into the cove, just seeing the water splashing off the green foliage made me feel cooler…or maybe the mist drifting through the air helped. We took off our shoes and waded into the pool. The hot desert we had just endured was a stark contrast to the cold, refreshing relief which now surrounded us.

Had we turned around any sooner, our efforts would have felt pointless. Had it been a cool day and an easy climb, we may not have appreciated God’s beauty as much as we did. We could have missed what became one of my favorite experiences of the trip. There are several small waterfalls along the way up, and our conclusion was that the stranger must have given up before having reached the waterfall.

As we headed back, we passed others in search of the oasis. They looked hot and weary. We simply advised, “Keep going, it’s absolutely worth it!”

Father, there are times in life when discouragement weighs us down, slowing or even stopping our progress. Help us encourage one another and build each other up. In whatever difficult trials and challenges we are experiencing, help us to not give up but instead remember that the best view comes after the hardest climb. Amen.

Book Review: Three Scripture Notebooks from 10ofThose

About the Books:

These Scripture notebooks pull together verses from the ESV on the themes of Faith, Hope, and Grace to encourage and facilitate meditating on Scripture. Ample space on each page allows for exploration of these verses, and is also ideal for recording prayers and sermon notes.

Beautifully bound and with restful, nature-inspired covers, these would make a great gift for friends and family.

My Thoughts:

When a verse of Scripture stands out to me, I like to write it down by hand. This practice helps me to internalize the concept and provides a tangible reminder when I need to recall spiritual truths. These three Scripture Notebooks from 10ofThose – HOPE Scripture Notebook, GRACE Scripture Notebook, and FAITH Scripture Notebook – are perfect for my Scripture recording, but they are not limited to that form of use.

These Scripture notebooks have lined pages which makes them ideal for journaling, copying Scripture, taking sermon notes, or even daily to-do lists. Above the lined space for writing, a verse from the ESV translation adorns each page spread. The slim notebooks, which are approximately 64 pages each, fit in a medium-sized purse.

I am happy to recommend the HOPE Scripture Notebook, GRACE Scripture Notebook, and FAITH Scripture Notebook to anyone looking for a notebook/journal with encouraging Scripture verses included. This three notebook set would make a lovely gift for any believer.
