About the Book:

He only wanted a duchess for a day--but she’s determined to make it a marriage for life

When his father and older brother suddenly pass away, the new Duke of Haverly is saddled with a title he never expected to bear. To thwart the plans of his scheming family, the duke impulsively marries a wallflower. After all, she’s meek and mild; it should be easy to sequester her in the country and get on with his life--as a secret agent for the Crown.
But his bride has other ideas. She’s determined to take her place not only as his duchess but as his wife. As a duchess, she can use her position to help the lowest of society--the women forced into prostitution because they have no skills or hope. Her endeavors are not met favorably in society, nor by her husband who wishes she’d remain in the background as he ordered.
Can the duke succeed in relegating her to the sidelines of his life? When his secrets are threatened with exposure, will his new wife be an asset or a liability?

Book Review: Ruby Moon by Jenny Knipfer

About the Book:

RUBY MOON EMBODIES A TALE OF GRIEF, GUILT, AND REDEMPTION...

On the shores of Lake Superior in Ontario during the mid 1890's, Jenay, a young woman of mixed French and Ojibwe descent, must survive the trauma of causing a horrific accident.

Amidst this drama, Jenay is caught in a web spun by Renault, a rich, charming man who once threatened ruination of her father's shipping company but now seeks something even more valuable...

Jenay must find where her strength lies in order to face the challenges life brings her or be washed away like driftwood on the tumultuous shores of Lake Superior.

Life's richest dramas are played out under the banner of two ruby colored moons and become the hidden gems which forge her into a mature strong woman. Jenay realizes God is by her side, using even the harsh events of life to create something precious in her.

My Thoughts:

Ruby Moon by Jenny Knipfer stands as the first novel in the By the Light of the Moon series. This unique literary fiction novel features multiple character POVs, but the main character is young Jenay Follett. Her tale is truly a coming-of-age journey involving joy, heartache, trauma, and family.  I felt that the author captured the essence and experience of trauma with Jenay’s thoughts and actions. Jenay’s pain felt terribly authentic, but wise statements, often from Maang-ikwe, pepper the story with hope for healing.

As I mentioned, there are multiple POVs in Ruby Moon. Additionally, part of the novel is written as split-time with both timelines containing flashbacks. This complicated story structure forced me to read very slowly. Though the book is a little over 400 pages, it took me over three weeks to read. Without carefully reading, the narrative jumps are potentially confusing.

I recommend Ruby Moon to readers who enjoy literary/women’s fiction. The novel can be challenging both in content and reading experience; however, it will likely appeal to fans of coming-of-age stories.

Book Review: A Foreign Crown by Jen Geigle Johnson

About the Book:

Following a devastating series of misfortunes, Lady Aribella Bardsley has bravely shouldered the responsibilities of her household. But just as the bleakness of her situation threatens to overwhelm her, a summons arrives from the Queen with a providential offer: Aribella’s presence is requested as a lady-in-waiting at the palace.
Prince Layton Wilhelm’s family has clung to their neutrality in the war for far too long. As the youngest of the King of Oldenburg’s eight sons, Layton is determined to prove his worth and is unwilling to turn a blind eye to Napoleon’s encroaching privateers. When Layton embarks on a journey to England, it is for one purpose: to petition the British navy for aid. But when he becomes acquainted with the lovely Lady Aribella, he cannot deny their powerful connection. Amid the intrigues and schemes within the walls of the palace, Layton and Aribella know a future together is impossible—but torn between loyalty and love, will they risk everything to follow their hearts?

My Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Foreign Crown by Jen Geigle Johnson. Prince Layton and Lady Aribella suited each other and I loved watching their relationship grow from friendship and mutual admiration to a full-blown secret romance with plenty of chemistry. Both characters feel duty-bound to others and must make difficult, life-changing decisions. More character development would have been welcome, but Layton and Aribella enchanted me as they were. A Foreign Crown felt light and was so entertaining that I didn’t want to put it down.

A Foreign Crown commences Jen Geigle Johnson’s Royal Regency Romance series and I can’t wait for more!

Excerpt: The Witching Hour (Short Story)

I watched the dense thicket of clouds slide over the giant luminous cookie in the sky. A pitch-black darkness descended over the neighborhood, and there was not a single streetlamp to mar it. It appeared that All Saints Eve was going to live up to its reputation after all. I glanced at my companion. I could tell she was thinking the same.

“Should we start? The time looks right,” Myra said.

“Yeah, let’s go.” I smiled at my long-time friend and neighbor.

She adjusted her lace-up corset and handed me her long and tattered train before gingerly stepping out of the alley that had been our hideout ever since the beginning of our ritual. Once again, I had to pause to admire her elaborate costume. She was pleased with it, especially since she had put it together herself. The delicate tea-stained ivory lace and tulle dress accented with droopy brown roses gave her a wispy and forlorn look. The many years of our adventures had supplied a precious aura of authenticity to the dress, as it had been tripped on and ripped several times.

Slowly, we made our way through the familiar streets we fondly called our haunt. They had watched us grow from carefree children into not very responsible young adults. We had roamed these alleys innumerable times, even in our dreams. Being here made us feel at home.

For a moment, I stood still and closed my eyes. The night air was flavored with moist earth and pumpkin spice crumble. I gulped it down hungrily.

Tonight, as always, silence was the key, broken only by the rustle of the rotting leaves that swept the sidewalk.

We listened, mesmerized. Five long years had gone by, but to me, it seemed like yesterday.

How Sweet It Is

(Lagacy of Faith, #3)

By Robin Lee Hatcher

Paperback, Audiobook and ebook, 304 Pages
July 14th 2020 by Thomas Nelson

He lost his brother. She lost her dream. Together, they might find what they’re really looking for.

Holly Stanford is doing the best she can with the restaurant she inherited from her late uncle. But after her fiancé abandons her and the business, Holly regrets having given up her dream of becoming a pastry chef. Now a few bad financial decisions might cost her everything, including her hope for the future.

Jed Henning has done well with his new company despite his prodigal brother’s behavior. When Jed‘s father, the controlling member of the board of directors, temporarily suspends operations until his sons work out their differences, Jed resentfully chases his brother, Chris, to Boise. There Jed rents a basement apartment from Holly and hopes to convince Chris to get his act together before their company collapses.

Unaware that Holly is the one person who can help him get through to Chris, Jed starts the tough work of reconciliation armed with little more than a few family photographs, a stack of old letters, and a Bible that belonged to his great-grandfather, Andrew Henning. And as romance blossoms between Holly and Jed, the story of Jed’s great-grandfather highlights the power of God across the generations and the legacy of a family’s courageous faith.

Excerpt

After pulling the car into the garage, Holly turned off the engine. Then she sat there, unmoving, waiting for enough energy to open the door. It didn’t happen for a long while.
She’d always been an independent kind of girl. Even in her relationships with others, she’d never been afraid to make her own way or to have a mind of her own. She had her faith, too, trusting in God’s guidance. But when it came to Sweet Caroline’s, had she listened to His voice, or had she relied on her own wants and desires? Why had He let it come to this? To the point where she could lose it all? If it all came crumbling down, if she lost her home, too, how would she support herself? She couldn’t launch a catering business after this. No one would give her a loan. And even if they would, if she lost her home, too, she wouldn’t have a kitchen to cook in. She had no reserves. It felt as if the dream was dying a second death.
She took a deep breath and released it slowly. At least she’d received some good news about Willow. Her young friend was expected to leave the hospital next week. The use of her arms would be limited for a while to come, and her wounds would need tender care, but at least she could heal in a more homelike environment. At Lighthouse, the other women would tend to her and love on her. Maybe AJ could visit her there, if it wouldn’t upset him too much to leave again.
Another deep breath, and Holly was ready to get out of the car and go inside.
When she closed the side door of the garage, she appreciated how easily it moved since Jed had repaired it. Reminded of him, she wondered how his day had been. Was AJ happy, staying with the uncle he barely knew? Did Jed look anything like Chris, making the child feel some measure of comfort?
I can’t think about him. I can’t. Let it go. Let him go.
Only two days had passed since she’d admitted to herself that, like it or not, she was falling for Jed, but it seemed a lifetime ago. So much had happened in those two days. She hardly felt like the same woman who’d stared at her reflection in the dressing-room mirror and reminded herself that she wanted to see life as a cup half full. But her life wasn’t half full. It was empty . . . because she’d trusted where she shouldn’t trust, because she saw what she wanted to see, not what was true.
She huffed out a breath of air as she moved on.
Inside, Pumpkin welcomed her home with a loud meow. After setting aside her purse, Holly picked up the cat and buried her face in the feline’s long hair.
“Sweetheart, what am I going to do?”
Pumpkin answered with a purr.
You never lie to me, do you? You’re just who you say you are.
She carried the cat with her into the living room, stopping long enough to turn on the lamp before settling onto the sofa.
“I’m at the end. I don’t know what to do. God, I need Your help. There’s no hope without You.”

AUTHOR INTERVIEW WITH MEGHANN WHISTLER

1.      What was the inspiration behind this novel?
Falling for the Innkeeper is set at a beachside inn on Cape Cod because I grew up spending my summers at my grandparents’ beachside inn on Cape Cod! I really wanted to go back there again—even if it was only in my imagination.

2.      How long did it take you to write this novel?
It took me nine months to write Falling for the Innkeeper. My youngest child wasn’t in school yet, so I wrote it in one- and two-hour increments while he was napping or in the babysitting room at the YMCA!

3.      Do you have a favorite quote from this novel?

“God doesn’t love us because we’re so awesome and amazing. He loves us just because we are who we are.”

4.      What do you hope readers take away from this novel?
I hope that readers come away from Falling for the Innkeeper with the sense that we don’t have to earn love and happiness—from God or anyone else. We are worthy, just as we are, and when the time is right, everything will fall into place!

5.      If the novel was made into a movie, who would like you to see play the main characters?
I think John Krasinski or Zachary Levi would both make a good Jonathan, because they’re both tall, dark and handsome, but they’re also approachable, funny and just a tiny bit nerdy.

I’d cast the actress Jen Lilley as Laura, because she’s beautiful, sweet and kind. Plus, she’s been in a million Hallmark Movies, and Falling for the Innkeeper definitely has a Hallmark Movie vibe!

6.      Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?
I grew up in Canada, so I’m really good at winter sports like skiing and figure skating—I’ve even been snowshoeing once or twice!

7.      What are you reading now?
I’m reading Evangeline Kelly’s Blind Date Disasters series. Her books are a lot of fun!

8.      How many bookshelves are in your home?
We have three bookcases for the adults, and four bookcases for the kids. I started using an eReader when my kids were babies, and now I read eBooks almost exclusively. I easily read more than a hundred books a year, and if we had to house all those books, we wouldn’t have room for anything else!

9.      Who is an author you would recommend to anyone and everyone?
I’m not sure there’s one author I’d recommend to everyone. People’s tastes and preferences are just so varied!

10.  What do you like to do when you aren't writing?

Read, of course, and read to my kids! I also listen to a lot of Christian rock music, and before COVID-19, I went to a few Christian rock concerts with my best friend, Anna.

When my husband and I get time alone, we like to play Gin Rummy or go for bike rides on the beach.

Excerpt

With his back pressed snug up against the wall in the narrow hallway, Mark knocked on the door. “Lainee? I need you to respond to me. I won’t hurt you, I promise. My name is Mark. Remember me? Can you say something for me?”

The three-year-old remained silent. Mark tipped his head back against the ramshackle wall and sent up a silent prayer. So far, he wasn’t getting anywhere, and they’d arrived on the scene well over an hour ago.

A neighbor had reported that Steve was being belligerent, and Brenda had been spotted with a fresh purchase of booze. Though both had denied it, the last straw had been drawn, and that was the end of it.

Sweat trickled down his back because the house had no AC, and he was beginning to wonder if the child was even in her room like Steve and Brenda had insisted upon.

“510 to 512.” Braeden’s voice rang through the earpiece Mark wore. “The parents are in separate patrol cars and we’re about to head to the station. Any luck?”

Mark pressed his button and said quietly, “Not yet. I’m working on it.”

Braeden must’ve decided he didn’t need more info, because he didn’t say anything further. Mark rapped on the door again.

“Lainee, can you hear me?”

This time, Mark heard muffled crying. He swallowed past his strong distaste for Steve and Brenda Olson, then eased to his feet. The only option now was to open the door and pray to God he didn’t scare her.

Mark’s heart about broke when he stepped into the room, even though he’d seen it before. Filled with just a beat up bed and a couple tattered toys, this ill-kempt room wasn’t the place for a little girl to grow up.

Lainee was sitting in the corner, and Mark crossed and knelt a couple feet from her. “You’re safe now, okay? Can you come with me? I’ve got an apple down in my car, if you want some.”
Distrusting blue eyes met his. “Gone?”

The fact that she, at only three years of age, had to ask that about her own parents made Mark’s blood heat. “Yes. They’re gone. You’re safe now.”

Tour Finale & Giveaway: Christmas in Bayberry by Jennifer Faye

On Tour with Prism Book Tours

We hope you enjoyed the tour! If you missed any of the stops

you'll find snippets, as well as the link to each full post, below:

Launch - Note from the Author

Thank you for joining me for the Christmas in Bayberry blog tour!

I know it’s hot here in the northern hemisphere and not exactly Christmastime but… maybe that’s the best time to visit a small town in snowy Vermont. So grab a nice cold drink and curl up to take an armchair vacation in a warm, cozy town. . .

"This is truly a Christmas reading delight! . . . This tale is such a relaxing drama, enclosed within a small town full of "Christmas Spirit". although quite predictable, it is endearing and the characters and scenes"draws one in"."

Pause for Tales - Review

"If you are looking for a little Christmas in July, look no further than Christmas in Bayberry. And if you adore Hallmark movies, you will enjoy this story from Hallmark Publishing. . . . As Wes and Kate navigate business and their attraction to each other grows, both of their dreams become at risk. Finding out what is most important to each other made this heartwarming story a welcome read."

"This is truly the sweetest Christmas book I’ve read in quite sometime . . . Jennifer’s writing and detailed descriptions have you feeling as if you are in this small town Vermont. . . . I highly recommend this beauty to get you in the holiday spirit!"

Remembrancy - Review

"The temperature outside may be in the 90s right now, but Christmas in Bayberry put me right in the holiday mood. Though a bit predictable (but Hallmark wouldn’t be Hallmark without their signature happy endings, now would they?), it is a sweet and fun escape."

Wes stepped up to his boss’s very large oak desk. “Here’s the file you requested. Everything should be in there.”

“Thank you.” Mr. Summers took the folder, then gestured to the two charcoal gray chairs in front of his desk. “Take a seat.”

Wes was torn between doing what the president of the company wanted or speaking up about his pending meeting. After all, Mr. Summers had the final say on who got the promotion. Wes had to stay on the man’s good side, but he also had to get his work done.

Wes’s mouth grew dry. He swallowed hard. “Sir, I’m expected in the conference room on the twelfth floor right now.”

Mr. Summers leaned forward, resting his elbows on the large oak desk. “They can wait.” His gray brows drew together in a formidable line. “This is important.”

Splashes of Joy - Review

"This is my favorite book that I have read by Jennifer Faye. It is a Hallmark Christmas Story, so if you are a fan of Hallmark movies, you will love this one! . . . If you love sweet, cozy, snowy, small town Christmas stories, Christmas in Bayberry is a must for you! E-Romance News - Excerpt

“Bayberry Candle Company” was printed across the top of each sheet. The breath caught in her throat. This was it—the evaluation of the company.

Kate knew she shouldn’t look, but it was like watching a train accident: You just couldn’t turn away. As she assembled the pages in numeric order, she noticed on the next-to-last sheet a header that read: “Conclusions.”

Her heart clenched. She stared at the words.

Please let it be a vote to keep the business operating.

Please. Please. Please.

Her gaze skimmed down the page. And then it stopped.
