Book Review: The Sowing Season

About the Book:

Can an unlikely friendship give them the courage to start again?

Forced to sell the dairy farm he's worked his entire life to make successful, Gerrit Laninga, now sixty-three, doesn't know what to do with himself. He sacrificed everything for his cows--his time, his health, his family--with nothing to show for it but bitterness, regret, and two grown children who want nothing to do with him.

Fifteen-year-old Rae Walters is stricken with panic every time she climbs behind the wheel. But any failure, including not passing her driver's test, jeopardizes The Plan--the detailed blueprint for high school and beyond that has her following in her lawyer father's footsteps. Though she's always been committed to The Plan, now that the pressure to succeed is building, doubts about whether she has what it takes begin to haunt her. What was supposed to unite her family in purpose could end up tearing it apart.

As their paths cross and a friendship begins to form, Gerrit's and Rae's lives change in unexpected ways. Will they discover what really matters in life and together learn it's never too late for a second chance?

First Line Fridays: Panning for Love by Meg Cross Wenig

Happy Friday!

First Line Fridays is hosted by Hoarding Books and participants share the first line from a nearby book.

Today, I'm sharing the first line from Panning for Love by Meg Cross Wenig.

"Anna, are you sure about this?" I asked my best friend through the phone.

Have you read Panning for Love? I'm hoping it will make it into my November reading. Book blurb below.

What are you reading this weekend? I'd love for you to share your book's first line!

Happy reading!

About the Book:

Maggie Carver found herself as the third wheel in her own relationship with a guy who was really good at living a double life—until he wasn’t. Since then, trust didn’t come easily. Two years later, her best friend convinced her to go live for a week in Summit Springs, an old mining town in Utah. In a historical reenactment experience, they would get to live as people did in 1866 during the Wild West. What Maggie didn’t plan on was falling for an outlaw from a wanted poster.

For John, it was love at first sight. He and Maggie had a rare connection, and it wasn’t every day someone understood his humor. He never minded playing the part as livery owner by day and outlaw by night at Summit Springs—until now. His other job came with a nice paycheck, but people normally treated him differently when they found out about it. John didn’t want a thing to change between him and Maggie.

Will Maggie let John steal her heart or will past fears foil the heist?

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: Deadly Connections by Jennifer Pierce

Deadly Connection Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour & Giveaway for Deadly Connection by Jennifer Pierce, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Deadly Connection
Title: Deadly Connection
Author: Jennifer Pierce
Publisher: Anaiah Press
Release Date: October 20, 2020
Genre: Christian Romantic Suspense

Private Investigator, Reid Lucas, and his mentor, Joe Lockhart, haven’t spoken in years, but when Joe wants to meet in a small-town diner, Reid’s interest is piqued. Without explanation, Joe calls and tells Reid he has five minutes to get waitress, Quinn Matthews, and her son out of the diner before they’re kidnapped by the group of thugs about to walk through the diner’s front door.

Quinn Matthews’ life is simple and safe, exactly how she likes it—until Reid Lucas walks into the diner. Now, she and her son are running for their lives, and she has no idea why. But when the father of her son shows up and dies saving them, she realizes they all have one deadly connection: Joe Lockhart. Now, she’ll have to trust the mysterious private investigator to not only save their lives but connect her past to her present so they can figure out who is after them. And why.

As the danger escalates, unexpected feelings arise. Reid doesn’t believe he’s worthy of Quinn’s love–or God’s. And Quinn is too worried about having her heart broken again and the effect of having a new man in her son’s life. Can they let go of their preconceived notions of love and relationships, or are they doomed to just let go of each other?

EXCERPT

Reid’s phone vibrated on the tabletop. He didn’t recognize the number. He contemplated ignoring it but decided against it. He swiped the screen and put it to his ear. “Reid.”

“Are you at the meet?” Joe’s voice boomed from the other side.

“Where are you? I’ve been waiting over an hour.” Reid let his annoyance be evident in his voice.

“I’m not coming.” The answer was clipped.

“You had me sit in this hole-in-the-wall for an hour and didn’t even bother to call and tell me you weren’t going to make it?” Annoyance turned to anger as he clenched his fist.

“Do you see the waitress behind the counter and the little red-haired boy that just ran in? Quinn Matthews and her son, JJ.”

Joe must be close by and watching if he knew the boy had just shown up.

“Yes, I see them. Along with the druggie busboy, thieving cashier, and ogling cook. What about them?”

“You have five minutes to get them out of there before men come in and try to kidnap them.”

“Five minutes! What is this? What’s going on, Joe?” His pulse pounded as adrenaline coursed through his veins. Joe couldn’t have called to have him get her out sooner. Now, the window of time was dwindling.

“There’s no time to explain. They’re here now. I’ll stall them as long as I can. Get those two out now!” The line went dead.

Great. Just great. He had mere minutes to convince that woman to grab her son and leave with him—a complete stranger. He wasn’t sure his rusty powers of persuasion would work this time, but he’d give it a shot. Joe had saved him several times, and he’d returned the favor on occasion. This was serious business, and Joe trusted him. Reid wouldn’t let him down.

Book Review: The Gospel in Dickens

About the Book:

Wish you had time to re-read and enjoy that daunting stack of Charles Dickens novels?

Take heart: Dickens enthusiast Gina Dalfonzo has done the heavy lifting for you. In short, readable excerpts she presents the essence of the great novelist’s prodigious output, teasing out dozens of the most memorable scenes to reveal the Christian vision and values that suffuse all his work.

Dickens can certainly entertain, but his legacy endures because of his power to stir consciences with the humanity of his characters and their predicaments. While he could be ruthless in his characterization of greed, injustice, and religious hypocrisy, again and again the hope of redemption shines through.

In spite of – or perhaps because of – his own failings, Dickens never stopped exploring the themes of sin, guilt, repentance, redemption, and restoration found in the gospel. In some passages the Christian elements are explicit, in others implicit, but, as Dickens himself said, they all reflect his understanding of and reverence for the gospel.

The Gospel in Dickens includes selections from Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol, Nicholas Nickleby, The Old Curiosity Shop, Martin Chuzzlewit, Dombey and Son, Bleak House, Hard Times, Little Dorrit, Our Mutual Friend, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Sketches by Boz – with a cast of unforgettable characters such as Ebenezer Scrooge, Sydney Carton, Jenny Wren, Fagin, Pip, Joe Gargery, Mr. Bumble, Miss Havisham, Betsey Trotwood, and Madame Defarge.

Read an excerpt from The Gospel in Dickens on the publisher's website.

My Thoughts:

The Gospel in Dickens commences with a foreword by Karen Swallow Prior (whose works I love). Next, editor Gina Dalfonzo introduces the compilation as well as some of Dickens’ history. The selections immediately follow and are sorted into three categories: (1) Sin and Its Victims, (2) Repentance and Grace, (3) The Righteous Life.  More entries are devoted to Sin and Its Victims than the other categories and it sometimes felt heavy. When needed, I skipped around to the other sections for something more hopeful.

The Gospel in Dickens inspired me to check out a Charles Dickens biography and some of his works from my local library. While each reading selection is prefaced by a paragraph or two that explains the background of the selection, I sometimes felt a bit lost because I have not read his works recently. The book is best suited for Christian readers who have already enjoyed the works of Charles Dickens.

EXCERPT

“Apparently, my parents like a big family. They also thought it best to give me an African name as a first name to make up for their sins of abandoning their Igbo heritage with the first four.” She turned her gaze to him. “So my grandmother said.” She looked back at the tall hotel and shop buildings that stood afar. “I’m not bothered by it though. I like to believe I’m the unique one.”

“So, no English name?” His teeth chattered. His hands balled into a fist in his leather jacket.

“I have one. Rayna,” she said, her long coat, trimmed with fur across the collar and sleeves inducing slight envy in him.

“Nkiruka Rayna Nnadi. You have a beautiful name.”

She smiled. “I think so too. Tell me more about yourself. What university do you go to and what course do you study?”

Inwardly, he was doing somersaults that she was interested in learning more about him. Pleased when she had noticed the small scar on his forehead; a trophy from younger years of playing football.

            “London Met. Public health.”

            “So, you’re a science geek?”

He chuckled. “I guess you could say that. But I sense God calling me to a different direction.”

She arched a brow. “Really? Like what?”

            “Probably to become a pastor.”

“Interesting,” she said, the expression on her face unreadable so he decided to switch the direction of the conversation.

“I couldn’t help but notice your dance moves in church.”

There was a gleam in her eyes. “I love to dance. I took ballet classes in school, but didn’t go far with it. Something about standing on your toes and trying to find balance unbalanced me.”

They spoke, laughed and got to know each other better as the hours hurried by. Daylight fast running out and the temperature dropped even further. Micah noted two important things as he headed back to London later that evening -he wanted to see her again and he was going to take her dancing no matter how silly it made him look. All he wanted was to see her smile and make her happy.

Two months and seven dates later, Micah officially asked her to be his girlfriend.

Book Review: Pearl in the Sand by Tessa Afshar

Purchase Link: Amazon.

My Thoughts:

Ten years ago, Pearl in the Sand made it into my top five books of the year. It is going to land there again this year. The 10th Anniversary edition of Pearl in the Sand includes a striking new cover, additional scenes, and book-wide edits, but the heart of this amazing story remains the same.

Pearl in the Sand immediately captivated my attention with Rehab’s character. She is intelligent, beautiful, witty, and loyal. Yet, she is so broken – spiritually, emotionally, sexually. Her character growth flows through the story and culminates with a deep healing. The spiritual truths embedded in the narrative touched my heart as I watched Rehab absorb them. Opposite Rehab is Salmone, a classic male lead, who proves to be heroic, romantic, and flawed. As Salmone learns to be who Rehab needs him to be, he creates a safe place for her to heal and flourish. A top-notch love story!

With its combination of powerful themes, dynamic characters, sparking romance, and spiritual truths, I can wholeheartedly recommend Pearl in the Sand to Christian fiction readers. I marked many passages to reread and savor after finishing the story. Five stars!

About the Author

Andrea Jo Rodgers is the author of award-winning Christian middle grade fiction as well as inspirational adult nonfiction novels. She holds a clinical doctorate in physical therapy and specializes in women’s health, orthopedics, and lymphedema. She has served her community as a volunteer emergency medical technician for over thirty years, responding to more than 8,200 first aid and fire calls. She lives on the east coast with her husband, two children, and their two fur babies.

More from Andrea

I’ve always loved writing.  In fact, I wrote my first “book” when I was in the first grade.  It was about how my mother and brother rescued an injured baby duckling from our town’s lake, so I suppose writing about rescues has been in my blood from a young age.

Several years back, my son and I were in a terrifying elevator accident that event made me step back and take a close look at my life.  I thought about my relationships with God, my family, and my friends.  I also thought about my goals and my dreams. The accident inspired me to start writing.
I decided  to write about my experiences as a volunteer with my town’s first aid squad.  I hoped that people might be inspired or comforted by my stories.  When I was finished the first draft, I thought that it needed something to pull it all together.  That’s when I decided to explain the source of my inspiration for writing the book by including my own 911 call.

When I first joined the first aid squad, I was seventeen and was just starting my senior year of high school. I’ve been a volunteer EMT ever since. Over the years, I have served in many offices, including Captain and President. Currently, I’m the Lieutenant, a trustee, and treasurer of our foundation.

During my time with the squad, I have been fortunate to witness some utterly amazing things. At Heaven’s Edge: True Stories of Faith and Rescue describes inspirational and memorable first aid calls from my early years with the rescue squad, from my school years when I spent summers working as a beach cop through my first years as a physical therapist. Some of the stories in the book are what I would consider to be miracles, some are sad, but faith-filled, and a few humorous. I invite you to join me in experiencing what it is like to serve as a first responder.

Author Interview with Andrea

Please give us a little introduction to your book.

Andrea: At Heaven’s Edge describes inspirational and memorable first aid and emergency calls from my experiences as a volunteer with my local rescue squad, from my school years when I spent summers working as a beach cop through my first years as a physical therapist.

How long did it take you to write this book?

Andrea: It took about two years to write At Heaven’s Edge. After writing for five months, I had to take a break for nine months while I focused on becoming a certified lymphedema therapist. Once I completed the national certification test, I gleefully dove back into writing.

In what setting do you enjoy writing the most?

Andrea: Since I’m a busy working mom who spends a lot of time volunteering with my rescue squad, I can’t afford to be picky about where I write. I’ve written on scrap paper in between innings or during time outs at my children’s sporting events and in the waiting rooms of doctors and dentists. Many times, I’ll write for a few minutes before I fall into bed. In an ideal world, I’d be able to type in peace and quiet at my computer in our home office, but I grab whatever minutes I can get wherever I can.

What do you like to do when you aren't writing?

Andrea: When I’m not writing, I love working part-time as a physical therapist. I specialize in women’s health, urinary incontinence, lymphedema, osteoporosis, ALS, and orthopedics. I volunteer as an emergency medical technician with my local first aid and rescue squad. I’m currently the Lieutenant and answer about 300 first aid calls per year. I enjoy watching my children participate in sports and extracurricular activities. I like walking along the ocean shoreline and taking daytrips. When I’m actually sitting down, our 14-year-old Shih Tzu (who we rescued when he was 12) is almost always in my lap.

Where can readers find out more about you and your book?

Andrea: Readers can find out more about me at my website, www.andreajorodgers.com. It also includes information about my books and links to interviews.

Book Review: Awaking Wonder by Sally Clarkson

About The Book:

Sally, what is your secret?

For years, parents worldwide have asked beloved author Sally Clarkson how she and her husband have ignited a love for learning and a deep faith in their children. They want to know how the Clarksons launched their children to live such vibrant, flourishing lives as adults.

Awaking Wonder is Sally's answer to those questions. This book is thirty-six years in the making and provides a deep dive into Sally's most profound legacy: nurturing and guiding her four children into a wonder-filled life. Her story will inspire and encourage you toward what is possible in raising your own children.

Children are one of the greatest treasures of every generation. Parents long to provide a life in which they can flourish in body, soul, and mind. Yet in today's culture, many feel they are floundering as they nurture their children.

If you are idealistic and hopeful about the process of raising your children to be healthy and vibrant, you will find encouragement through the Clarksons' story. If you feel exhausted, ill-equipped, confused, or unsupported in your journey as a parent, you will find relief through the countless ideas and practical applications in this book.

Awaking Wonder will inspire you, delight you, provide laughter, and bring tears through the heartfelt stories of four lively children and the wondrous life they grew up in together.

Journey with Sally toward:
• cultivating wonder all around you, alongside your children
• understanding how to invigorate and open your children's hearts and minds to the grand design, beauty, and goodness scattered throughout the universe
• laying a foundation for spiritual formation and a robust faith in God
• nurturing your children to live into their capacity in intellect, faith, and relationships

If you long for a holistic, creative, spiritually foundational approach to parenting and education, this is the book you've been waiting for.

The companion guide, The Awaking Wonder Experience, will help you apply Sally's principles in practical, life-changing ways.

Read an excerpt on the publisher's website.

My Thoughts:

Awaking Wonder stands as the best nonfiction book I have read in 2020. Sally Clarkson’s heart for encouraging parents to embrace wonder resonates on every page of the book. She offers fascinating insights into her personal journey as she presents her case for the importance of cultivating wonder. She challenges parents to strive for ideals and model attributes they want their children to emulate. Yet, she balances ideals with real life realities such as household chores and family conflicts. Near the end, she discusses openly what she would have done differently.

Reading Awaking Wonder felt like sitting down with a wise, beloved mentor. I felt affirmed in my choice to homeschool. Certain suggestions and ideals inspired me to strive for excellence. Most importantly, the author’s encouragement infused me with excitement and joy to continue our homeschooling journey.

I recommend Awaking Wonder: Opening Your Child’s Heart to the Beauty of Learning by Sally Clarkson to all homeschooling parents. Though the concepts of the book can be applied by all parents, the heart of this book is centered on homeschool-style education.

Happy Friday!

First Line Fridays is hosted by Hoarding Books and participants share the first line from a nearby book.

Today, I'm sharing the first line from The Sowing Season by Katie Powner.

"Cow manure spewed from the burst pipe and rained down on him like retribution."

Sounds terrible, doesn't it? 😂 The Sowing Season releases next week, but my copy arrived a few days ago and I'm looking forward to reading this novel.

What are you reading this weekend? I'd love for you to share your book's first line!

Happy reading!

About the Book:

EXCERPT

A yellow Victorian caught his eye and he slowed his pace. Then he squinted at what used to be the most impressive house in town. Paint peeled off the second-story shutters, one of which was slightly askew, while the white picket fence bordering the front yard needed pressure washing. He read the sign on the fence: Don’t Let the Pigs Out. He rubbed his eyes and reread the words. He hadn’t made any mistakes.

Low-pitched grunts piqued his curiosity, so he stepped onto the soft green grass and peeked over the fence. Rubbing his eyes, he stopped and focused on one miniature pig rooting in the ground while the other scratched its back on a wooden post in the garden. A border collie completed the picture, running in circles around the other two animals.

Lucie Appleby, debutante and homecoming queen, now owned pigs? The surprises kept coming.
