About the Book:

He sees patterns in what she deems chaos. She sees beauty in a world he thought destroyed.

Zivon Marin was one of Russia's top cryptographers until the October Revolution tore apart his world. Forced to flee to England after speaking out against Lenin, Zivon is driven by a growing anger and determined to offer his services to the Brits. But never far from his mind is his brother, whom Zivon fears died in the train crash that separated them.

Lily Blackwell sees the world best through the lens of a camera and possesses unsurpassed skill when it comes to retouching and re-creating photographs. With her father's connections in propaganda, she's recruited to the intelligence division, even though her mother would disapprove if she ever found out.

After Captain Blackwell invites Zivon to dinner one evening, a friendship blooms between him and Lily that soon takes over their hearts. But both have secrets they're unwilling to share, and neither is entirely sure they can trust the other. When Zivon's loyalties are called into question, proving him honest is about more than one couple's future dreams--it becomes a matter of ending the war.

She quickly figures out that Toran doesn’t appreciate being rescued by a girl any better than Pierce likes being knocked down by one. When Pierce seeks revenge on Ginnie, Toran sets aside his anger and helps her plot a playback prank at Pierce’s house.

Sadly, Ginnie learns that Pierce has a reason for being a bully when she sees his dad drop him to the floor like a ragdoll with one awful blow to the chest. Realizing he's a boy in big trouble, Ginnie switches gears and decides to be his ally, even if he won’t let her be his friend.

EXCERPT

GINNIE IS AGGRAVATED WITH HER DAD & BROTHER:

She blew out an impatient breath. “That would mean seeing Daddy again and I’m not talking to him.”

Uncle Jake chuckled. “That does complicate things, but being the good uncle that I am, I can’t in good conscience allow you to ride without your helmet at least, knowing your dad prefers you to ride with a saddle and your helmet. Why are you mad at my brother?”

“Because he’s nuts. And so is my brother. Please let go, I’ll be fine.”

Uncle Jake smiled and shook his head. “Can you define ‘nuts’ for me?”

“Crazy. Loony. Nutburgers. Now please let go.”

“Sorry, I need more information than that.”

“Uncle Jake!”

“Fill in the blank.” He handed her Calliope’s reins. “I am risking getting grounded by riding without my helmet because …”

Ginnie didn’t hesitate, fury rising mounting. “Because my dad is as pigheaded as my brother. They would rather see Toran beat up by Pierce than have me help him. They actually think Pierce is gonna listen to Toran tell him to back off.” Ginnie recalled Pierce’s angry, purple face when he found himself on the theater floor earlier and shook her head. “Pierce isn’t the chatting type.”

She fell from grace…
Before falling for him

When her husband defrauded the town of Hollydale, now-divorced mom Lucie Decker went from being the town darling to total pariah. Now she’s launching a new business and needs ranger Caleb Spindler’s help. And her twins adore Caleb. After all, he’s a genuine hero—even if he is hiding a secret. But while Lucie’s heart has forgotten how to trust, it still remembers how to fall in love…

Excerpt

It had sounded so easy on the drive. Dig around into Lucie’s life to see whether his parents should invest in an attorney to broker involvement between the authorities and whoever was in charge of a restitution account, however small, to see if they could recover the fifty thousand dollars Justin had swindled from them.

Spying was the more accurate word, but that was harsher to his ears.

Then came the words he’d never expected to hear after all these years.

Lucie considered him her best friend.

Friends didn’t spy on each other.

Friends didn’t lie to each other.

Author Interview & Giveaway: About Face, Rest, and Intents & Purposes

About the Books

Book: About Face, Rest, and Intents and Purposes
Author: Tonia Colleen Martin
Genre: Illustrated Poetry
Release Date: 2019 and 2020

The terrible accident happened too long ago to remember the specifics. Having lost what she doesn’t remember owning, it takes the miracle of crossing paths with Hush, Shush and Silence, to reveal the truth. The shock of realizing she struggled to maintain an identity never meant to be hers, floors her. From a position of surrender, the surface of her tears mirrors who she has always been but hasn’t seen and does not know. Unimaginable possibilities, surprising choices and thrilling freedom ensues.

At the core of all anxiety is mistaken identity. About Face invites readers to consider who they might be apart from other people’s expectations and who they might become.

A perennial gift book for the stressed and beleaguered. Falling into the growing category of children’s books for adults, Rest: An Invitation to Freedom, lures readers out of frenzied productivity into a state of peaceful contemplation. Written for exhausted high achievers, this story is suitable for office lobbies, coffee and bedside tables.

“The heart of Christianity is a myth which is also a fact. At its best, the fairy story or fantasy is far from being a flight from reality; it is, rather, a flight to reality.”- JRR Tolkein

“The trumpet of imagination, like the trumpet of the Resurrection, calls the dead out of their
graves.” – GK Chesterton

“Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.” — C.S. Lewis

This story took longer to live than to transcribe. For daydreamers, truth-seekers, joy-feeders, and those longing to let your heart instruct your mind, this little book is for you. Falling into my own stylized category of children’s book for adults, Intents and Purposes, chronicles the path of a life abandoned by disconnection and loneliness as it moves to the threshold of hope and contentment.

Both text and illustrations are mine. Although countless versions reside in my constantly reconfiguring memory, this compilation seems to be its truest version.

More from Tonia

They are ready! Finally! These three illustrated books are condensed chronicles of various phases of my spiritual development. Over the years, I’ve learned that the deepest matters of the heart seem to be resistant to the confines of words. Images aid in the capture of emotions, but even still, the heart is shy. It runs from impatience and requires a concentration of listening and a suspension of judgment.

Each one of these books hovers over distinct territories and touch down in depths most avoid. I struggle to put my experiences into a kind and beautiful package, hoping to lure readers into places of feeling many might avoid. Not realizing they would be officially released during this unnerving pandemic, I am now so grateful for the message of hope that invites readers into possibilities and faith in our merciful Father of Lights who brought all things into being and is, even now, administering Peace to those who simply ask and expect. For those who suffer in the unknown, as I have and often do, I invite to include the reading of these missives of encouragement and their distribution of the message of Hope hidden in their pages.  They were written to uplift you on the days when you can find no words for your longing, no relief for your uncertainty and a deep desire for encouragement.  I am eager to get them out in the world.

Author Interview

What was the inspiration behind this series?
Tonia: The three books being promoted by Celeb Lit were developed as a response and an exploration of the path from living like an orphan in a story of my own invention to living out the redeemed story of my position as God’s daughter and a joint heir with Christ Jesus.

How long did it take you to write this novel?
Tonia: These books are not novels. They are gift books, much shorter than a novel, more dense and concentrated in terms of their messages of hope and how to overcome discouragement and loneliness. Several years went into the writing and illustration of the books. I can’t say I kept track. I just kept whittling away at my message, carving off unnecessary words or superfluous ideas.

What was the most surprising thing you discovered while researching and writing this set?
Tonia: It surprised me how often the core issues of abandonment and misidentification propel people into recycling back over and over again in a direction of repetitive harm.

Do any of the novel’s characters hold a special place in your heart?
Tonia: They all hold a special place in my heart. Their struggles are my struggles.

Do you have a favorite quote from this novel?
Tonia: When people with poor eyesight mingle with those with selective hearing, accidents happen.”

What do you hope readers take away from this novel?
Tonia: I hope readers will be encouraged to have their struggles revealed & represented by the various characters.

If the novel was made into a movie, who would like you to see play the main characters?
Tonia: My little books would lend themselves quite well to very short videos that could be sent to encourage people who are feeling alone and discouraged.

Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?
Tonia: I lived most of my life being afraid of freedom, even though I didn’t realize it. When a life-altering tragedy put me in a position of having the freedom to make all kinds of decisions, I suddenly realized how frail my faith was.

In what setting do you enjoy writing the most?
Tonia: I need big blocks of time and silence.

What are you reading now?
Tonia: I am reading a novel about the Israeli/ Palestinian conflict.

How many bookshelves are in your home?
Tonia: Five….they are everywhere.

Who is an author you would recommend to anyone and everyone?
Tonia: C.S. Lewis; Frederick Buechner; Wendell Berry.

What do you like to do when you aren't writing?
Tonia: I paint, garden, cook; spend time with children and grandchildren, participate in “story” writing workshops.

Where can readers find out more about you and your novel?
Tonia: www.toniacolleenmartin.com; I love email correspondence: tonia.colleen@gmail.com.

First Line Fridays: Under the Tulip Tree by Michelle Shocklee

Happy Friday!

First Line Fridays is hosted by Hoarding Books and participants share the first line from a nearby book.

Today, I'm sharing the first line from Under the Tulip Tree by Michelle Shocklee.

"Pandemonium has broken out in the streets of New York City."

Have you read Under the Tulip Tree? Book blurb below and you can read an excerpt on Tyndale's website.

What are you reading this weekend? I'd love for you to share your book's first line!

Happy reading!

About the Book:

Sixteen-year-old Lorena Leland’s dreams of a rich and fulfilling life as a writer are dashed when the stock market crashes in 1929. Seven years into the Great Depression, Rena’s banker father has retreated into the bottle, her sister is married to a lazy charlatan and gambler, and Rena is an unemployed newspaper reporter. Eager for any writing job, Rena accepts a position interviewing former slaves for the Federal Writers’ Project. There, she meets Frankie Washington, a 101-year-old woman whose honest yet tragic past captivates Rena.

As Frankie recounts her life as a slave, Rena is horrified to learn of all the older woman has endured—especially because Rena’s ancestors owned slaves. While Frankie’s story challenges Rena’s preconceptions about slavery, it also connects the two women whose lives are otherwise separated by age, race, and circumstances. But will this bond of respect, admiration, and friendship be broken by a revelation neither woman sees coming?

ABOUT THE BOOK

Just Jones by Andy Andrews Title: Just Jones
Series: Noticer #3
Author: Andy Andrews
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: September 8, 2020
Genre: Inspirational Fiction/Magical Realism

From New York Times bestselling author Andy Andrews comes the return of one of our favorite fictional characters: Jones, the noticer. A mysterious elderly man with white hair and endless wisdom who always appears to show up exactly when he’s needed most.

At 3:29 a.m. on May 22, a telephone rings in Orange Beach, Alabama. Breaking the sleepy silence inside the bedroom of New York Times bestselling author Andy Andrews, a hastily whispered message heralds the news that Andy has been waiting on for seven years: Jones is back in town. Apparently, however, he is also in jail.

The old man is tight-lipped about the circumstances surrounding his brief incarceration. After arriving to bail him out, Andy is shocked to discover that his trusted friend has already opened an unusual business in one of the resort town’s most high-profile shopping districts. Jones’s Five & Dime seems to always have exactly what visitors are looking for, even as their fate steadily becomes entwined with Jones’s.

As the town moves from spring to summer, a practical joker is becoming bolder and more inventive with every prank that is pulled. Could Jones be behind some of it? Why? And what will happen if he is? What’s the truth about that four-hundred-pound table in his Five & Dime? What compels certain people to gather around it every morning? And why does it look as if every person Jones meets has a secret they will reveal only to him?

With rare insight, Andy and Jones take us on a journey that proves the importance of perspective, the power of connection, and the ability we all have to make the impossible come true.

EXCERPT FROM JUST JONES

FROM THE PAGES OF THE BOOK . . .

He wore blue jeans and a white T-shirt with leather flip-flops. His longish, snow-white hair framed a deeply tanned face and the most startling eyes Keely had ever seen. In fact, they were the first thing she’d noticed after being placed in the cell. The old man’s eyes were blue, but it was a lighter—no, a brighter—shade of blue than she had ever seen.

It was as if his eyes had been encased in crystal. There was a clarity to them Keely was unable to define. She had heard of eyes that sparkled, but always considered that specific description a way of referring to excitement reflected in a person’s face. But this old man? His eyes really did sparkle.

He had already been in the cell when Keely was locked in during the early morning hours. When the door had shut behind her, the officer quickly departed. Keely simply stood by the door with tears streaming down her face. She had been angry, afraid, and drunk.

Now, her head pounded ferociously, but she was beginning to recall those first moments in the cell. The old man had stood when she walked in, Keely remembered. And he had said something. What was it? Oh yes . . .he had bowed slightly and said, “Welcome. Come in and rest. I’ve been waiting and am glad you’re here.”

Keely stared at the old man for a moment through half-open eyes. “Who are you?” she said.

“Jones,” he smiled. Then, nudging her playfully with his shoulder, added, “Not Mr. Jones. Just Jones.”

Author Shirley Quiring Mozena, with her husband Jim, know the demands of remarriage, blending families from divorce and being widowed. They came from long and enduring marriages and found marriage to be fulfilling. They discovered that in spite of their love for each other, there were challenges before their wedding took place.

Together they wrote Second Chance at Love. Join them as they share their joys, sorrows, and even misfires in pursuing a marriage partner. This book will show you through their own experiences through divorce and widowhood what’s important in what a couple might face in second or third marriages.

Author Interview with Shirley

Please give a little introduction to your book

Shirley: More and more men and women over fifty-five are choosing to get married again after death and divorce—though navigating such a path isnt always a happy bed of roses. But the authors of Second Chance at Love: Navigating the Path to Remarriage have traversed these rocky shores and offer practical insights for those considering romantic relationships after dealing with devastating losses due to death or divorce.
How long did it take to write this book?
Shirley: Two years.
What do you hope readers take away from your book?
Shirley: That loving again after death or divorce is possible. Finding another mate can be successful—but there are definite areas to consider before marrying again.
What setting do you enjoy writing in the most?
Shirley: I have an office with lots of photos on my walls. The photos come from my past. One of me climbing a mountain and reminding me how difficult it was. Another of my husband, handsomely standing in his tuxedo from a cruise we took a few years ago. Past photos of my grandchildren. There’s a placard with part of I Corinthians 13… "Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." A good reminder of how my words have influence on others and the importance of them. Of course, there are shelves of books—I love books—they are my friends.
