TWO HEARTS BROKEN ALONG THE SAME JAGGED EDGE MAKE A GRISLY DISCOVERY DEEP IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY

Meanwhile, Kyle Benton has come seeking asylum from past sins—which Solveig shatters even as their hopeless romance blooms. But when they discover a skeleton at Rice Caverns, its century-old mystery holds startling links to the here-and-now.

1919. The Great War is won. Gussie Rice longs for her beau's return from France, until she learns he’s confined at a stateside hospital and her closest confidant is part of the secret. Her bid for love sparks a confrontation that ricochets through time...

Excerpt

The conversation halted as high beams flashed in the front window. The thunder of blood pounded in her ears, her chest. Her tormentors, back for another round?

The car followed the curve of the gravel drive and blocked Kyle in. Once she saw it from the side, her throat constricted.

A county patrol car.

Hold it together. Stay with me, now.

Kyle stepped away from the window, but she continued to stare out, frozen. Waiting.

The lights died and the driver's door opened. A long-legged figure emerged. She knew the posture, gait, and frame from ten years of bad dreams. He swung a searchlight around, and she lowered her eyes, afraid the sudden flash might throw her into another full-blown panic attack.

Kyle zipped his coat.

Deep breath. The policeman couldn’t hurt her. She opened the door before he knocked. “Good evening, Officer Dade.”

“It’s ‘Sheriff’ now.” He flicked his badge. Its glint stood out from the shadows. “Missed you at the funeral.”

She flinched at his gruff voice. That, too, featured in the nightmares. “The hearse driver took me for a joyride to the cemetery, and by the time I got back, someone had vandalized my barn.”

Sheriff Dade looked unimpressed. “You want to file a complaint?”

“No, sir.”

“Then there ain’t much I can do.” He paused a beat. “You know how kids can be.”

The dart pierced the tender fourteen-year-old buried in her heart. “I do, indeed.”

Leonard Dade never had made a secret of his belief Solveig should have been tried as an adult.

Author Interview

Q: What was the inspiration behind Like Honey for the Bones?

Brandy: A couple of special moments converged to plant this story seed.

First, a friend from church invited my husband and me to host two women on a mission trip from Norway. They and the rest of their group came to our area for training at a church conference, and I enjoyed the opportunity to get to know them and learn a bit from them about their country and culture. Before long, I was dreaming up a Norwegian-American heroine who needed a story…

Around that time, another friend who writes in a different genre took a tour of Grand Caverns in Grottoes, Virginia. Knowing my love for family history research, she described the Civil War era signatures on the cavern walls which can be matched to other historical records. My imagination leapt from those simple “I was here” impulses of long-ago people and invented a prayer wall, where generations of folks went to ink or etch their petitions to God. From there, a story began to take shape.

Q: How long did it take you to write this story?

Brandy: Much too long! I spent years on this novel, and I’m so happy to finally send it out into the world!

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Brandy: This one from Solveig’s point of view comes to mind:

“Home had nothing to do with place and everything to do with presence. Nothing to do with language and everything to do with being understood. But she couldn’t make that leap toward him without knowing he’d catch her.”

Q: What do you hope readers take away from Like Honey for the Bones?

Brandy: I’m praying God uses this story as He wills. Since every reader is unique, I hope each one finds something specific to encourage, strengthen, or challenge the heart. However, since my books are meant to entertain, I want readers to have fun following the mystery to discover whose bones are they, anyway?

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers would not know?

Brandy: I have three mousepads to accommodate my various workstations, and without quite meaning to, I managed to go with “Cats and the Night Sky” imagery on all of them. (Incidentally, one of them might also be described as “Taco Cat in Space,” and it’s probably my favorite.)

Q: How many bookcases are in your home?

Brandy: We have five proper bookcases but have also stowed books in a few creative spots: the dining room hutch, an antique writing desk, and a cubby-style headboard in the guest room, to name a few.

Q: How long ago did you start writing?

Brandy: I was a bookish type from my earliest memories and knew I loved to write when I was still in elementary school, but around 2008 I felt my dreams tugging and launched into my first serious attempt at a novel. Even though that early piece, along with a 2011 NaNoWriMo project, aren’t meant for the spotlight, they were still stepping stones in discovering my voice and genre. Also, both projects showed me that I had a lot to learn!

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a writer?

Brandy: I love creating stories that entertain readers in a way that speaks to and celebrates our faith. I recently read through Hebrews and took in again the passage in Chapter 11 about seeking a heavenly country. My stories take place in this life, but I do hope they carry the scent of home.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Brandy: My husband and I love to binge-watch a good mystery series. Most recently, we enjoyed catching up on The Brokenwood Mysteries, a quirky small town detective drama set in New Zealand. Next up: the last season of Endeavour!

Book Spotlight: Positively, Penelope by Pepper Basham

Positively Penelope JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Positively, Penelope by Pepper Basham hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Positively, Penelope Title: Positively, Penelope
Series: Skymar #2
Author: Pepper Basham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: August 1, 2023
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Told mostly through letters, texts, and email, this contemporary romance will charm its way into hearts as Penelope rescues a theater and discovers her true self in the process.

Penelope Edgewood is practically positive in every way, so when, fresh out of college, she is awarded a paid internship to help save a century-old theater on the island of Skymar, she jumps at the chance. After all, a crumbling theater needs the special touch of someone who reveres all things vintage and adores the stage.

Unfortunately, not everything is as it seems at Darling House Theatre. Finances are in shambles, the local theater group is disenchanted, and the two brothers, Matt and Alec Gray, can’t seem to see eye-to-eye about how to run their theatrical business. So, of course, it’s the perfect place for Penelope to shine her own personal brand of sunshine.

With a little help from GK, the person emailing her encouragement along the way, she puts all her heart into helping the Grays save Darling House. But between Matt’s ever-present skepticism, Alec’s tendency to treat Penelope a little too much like the “princess” she thinks she wants to be (until someone actually started treating her that way), a grandfather who is stuck in his grief, and a mysterious person stealing Penelope’s marketing ideas, she’s not sure her optimism is enough to make a happily-ever-after of her own story, let alone The Darling House’s.

Between an adorable little girl, a matchmaker, a sea monster or two, and a copious amount of musical references, can Penelope draw enough confidence from her faith, her family, and her adoration of all things Julie Andrews, to find the thief and save the theater . . . without getting her heart broken in the process?

Book Excerpt

Penelope’s phone went off in her hand to the ringtone “I Could Have Danced All Night.” She’d changed Matt’s ringtone from “Don’t Worry Be Happy” after she learned he was a dancer. Her smile spread so wide, it stretched her face and she dropped back against the couch as she answered.

“An actual phone call? This must be my lucky day.”

He huffed a response. “You say that as if we don’t communicate almost daily.”

“Not by phone calls.” There was something different about hearing him over the phone. A focus on just his voice, his style of speaking. And she hadn’t expected his voice to sound so . . . well, wonderfully delicious. Like he needed to break out in a rendition of “Some Enchanted Evening.” She rolled her gaze heavenward. She was ridiculous! “But if taking Grandpa Gray out for ice cream will encourage spontaneous phone calls, then it’s a huge win for me. Company with your grandpa, ice cream, and a fun conversation with you. How can that be bad?”

He sputtered for a second and then seemed to find his voice. “How did you convince him to go to the television station and engage in that interview? I can barely get him out of the house.”

“Like I said, I must have looked pretty desperate, so when I offered to tag team the interview with him, he agreed.”

“Just like that?” His skepticism was not heartening at all.

“Well, I promised to make him carrot cake cupcakes.”

“And?”

She frowned. How did guess so well? “Help him find some more of Granny Gray’s photos that are packed away in the theater.”

Silence followed for a few seconds and she twisted her finger through the little threads at the corners of the pillow in her lap. Should she tell him about her mole concerns? Could she trust him with her fears? What if he were the mole?

She shook her head. That didn’t seem right at all! What would his motive be for The Darling House’s fall?

“Thank you, Penelope.” His quiet gratitude caught her off guard. Gentle. Sincere. Not that he wasn’t usually sincere, and, well, gentle with Iris. So gentle. And kind. But the way he said it left a sweet swell of warmth in her chest. “You were fantastic. Not just getting Grandfather on camera, which was a huge boon for the theater, but the way you added this positive energy to the entire conversation about The Darling House. Alec could never have done what you did today.”

“I hope it helps.” She squeezed the pillow close to her chest, his praise sinking deep. “I may never rescue a princess from a tower, or fight dragons, but I love showing people their potential, watching them . . . I don’t know . . .”

“Believe in themselves, perhaps?”

She hugged the pillow tighter, a mist warming her vision, so she closed her eyes. Men didn’t usually see her that way. Not all the way to her heart. She often wished they did—former dates who took her for a silly, easy conquest, just a pretty face without a brain. But Matthias had just voiced a little piece of her heart that those men never took the time to figure out, and she realized that was exactly something that a friend was supposed to know. She drew in a quivering breath, not realizing how badly she’d wanted to hear a live person’s voice until that moment. And he’d become a friend. “I’m really glad you called. I was feeling a little bit lonely for some reason and your voice was exactly what I needed.”

“You know that if you ever need personal contact, I could send Iris down for a massive princess fest, the likes of which we have never seen in Skymar.”

A laugh burst out and Penelope sighed back into the couch. “And I’m always happy to have her. Who knows? If you keep sending her, we might even convince you that fairy tales aren’t all that bad.”

“Humbug.” But she heard the humor in his voice. Knew how to recognize it, and the knowledge spread her grin even wider.

MY THOUGHTS

Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom: Words on Love, Life, Society, and Literature, compiled by Andrea Kirk Assaf, is adorable, yet stylish. At nearly 400 pages, the book is thick, but remains compact. I can fit it in my purse.

As expected, Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom showcased the wit, depth, humor, and intelligence of this beloved author. Included quotes came from the entirety of Jane Austen’s works – novels, letters, prayers, juvenilia, and poems. Eight sections divide the quotations by topic. One of my favorite Jane Austen prayers appeared on page 92: “May we now, and on each return of night, consider how the past day has been spent by us, what have been our prevailing thoughts, words, and actions during it.” A wise word, indeed. I noticed that a handful of quotes repeated partially or in full at different points in the book.

Perhaps my favorite part of reading Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom was trying to place the quotes within their respective stories and scenes. I recommend Jane Austen’s Little Book of Wisdom as a gift for Jane Austen fans.

Epic Book Launch: The Air I Breathe by Karen Baney

About the Book:

Book: The Air I Breathe
Author: Karen Baney
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance
Release date: August 15, 2023

Single mom, starting over. Christian Contemporary Romance. One moment of weakness changed everything.

When life throws Kelly Sutton a curve ball, she packs up everything she owns to move to Arizona to be closer to her daughter’s dad. Starting over in a new town stresses Kelly and triggers panic attacks—something she thought she was over. When a panic attack comes on and the only person she knows in town can’t help her, his roommate comes to her rescue. Will Kelly find her footing again in this new town?

Matt Dixon has too much on his plate. He works as a financial analyst during the day while he goes to seminary at night. He also juggles an internship with his church to fulfill his dream of becoming a youth pastor. When he comes to the aid of his roommate’s ex, he never expects his life to go off the rails. Will he choose love for a woman over his dream?

Book Excerpt

“Her father, Kyle Jacobs, may pick her up sometimes. And possibly her aunt, Marcy Schaefer.” Kelly pulled up the contacts on her phone and jotted down their numbers.

“If anyone else needs to fill in, you or her father will need to notify us ahead of time.”

“Understood.”

The woman gave her a copy of the paperwork, which Kelly crammed into her large everyday canvas purse. She thanked her, then hugged Alana tightly. The sweet, un- mistakable bubblegum scent of her body wash lingered.

“I’ll be back at three. Or your daddy will pick you up at five if I can’t make it.”

“Love you, Mommy.”

“Love you, sweetie.”

Kelly waved as a worker introduced Alana to the other six-year-olds. Then she strode out to the parking lot and climbed into her car. Letting out a loud sigh, she rested her head on the steering wheel.

What had she been thinking, uprooting her life to move to Chandler, Arizona? It certainly seemed to make sense when Kyle suggested it a few weeks ago during a visit with Alana.

Yeah, that whole thing still felt weird. Her baby’s daddy, Kyle, had finally stepped up to be a father about a year ago after he found Jesus.

Sammy checked his smartwatch. The bakery would be closing any minute, and he’d promised his mother a baguette to have with their lasagna that night. After dropping off another packet of legal documents at Turnquist Lumber, he biked over to the Fox.

The dining room was empty, and no one was manning the till. Strange. Usually Elaine or Jim greeted their customers as they came in the door.

A scream pealed out from the kitchen.

He scrambled through the swinging doors. At first he didn’t see where the scream had come from, but then he noticed a pair of petite legs sticking out from under the sink, where the pipes were doing their best Niagara Falls impression.

“Whoa! You need to get that valve turned off.”

“I know that!” the legs shouted. Okay, it probably wasn’t the legs. “The dumb thing is stuck.”

He crossed over to the sink double-time. “Here, let me.”

A woman’s voice growled. “Be my guest.”

He reached under the sink, his shoulders barely finding clearance, water spraying everywhere. The woman inched out, giving him room. He didn’t look her direction—too much water spraying everywhere. Finding the water shutoff valve, he gave it a twist. It resisted, so he strained harder. It gave way and screeched as he turned it to the right. Mercifully, the water stopped shooting him in the face.

With a sigh, he wiggled out from the opening and turned. He sat down against the cabinet, ignoring the water seeping into his jeans.

The woman in front of him was soaked, auburn curls dripping onto her Fox-themed shirt. Freckles dotted her upturned nose beneath a pair of pale green eyes.

“Robin? Robin Fox?” He recognized her with a start. She’d changed since high school. More sophisticated or something. Cute, and grown up.

She gave a weak wave. “That’s me.”

Hannah Wade loves sports, so when injury is swiftly followed by an opportunity to be one of Calgary's first female sports analysts, she jumps at the chance. Growing up with three sisters means Franklin thought he knew something about women, but nothing had ever prepared him for the sparkling firecracker that is Hannah. Royce nodded, and pointed to the ice as the players moved off for the first break.

“Hey Franklin,” she called.

He drew near—he’d been warned this was happening—and glanced at the camera before his gaze fixed on her. Butterflies soared, and she smiled, then dimmed it back. Professional, remember?

She glanced at Royce and he nodded. Steadying breath. Smile. Action. “Hey Franklin, thanks for joining us tonight. You’re a homegrown Calgary player, playing for the team you cheered on as a boy in your first game here at the Saddledome. How’s the experience been so far?” She passed him the microphone.

His lips twitched and he leaned in. “It’s been great. The fans are obviously amazing, and it’s good to see we’ve got momentum going our way in tonight’s game.”

She nodded, smiling. “And this is your first game in regular season after playing in Boston for many years. How welcoming has this team been for you so far?”

“They’ve been great, such a warm welcome, Mike especially. I’m really glad to be here.”

“Well, we’re really glad you’re here too.” Uh-oh. Had that been too much? “Well, thank you for doing this. Good luck in the game tonight.”

“Thank you so much.” He grinned, and she kept her smile fixed, not looking in his direction until Royce nodded, and she relaxed and stole a peek as he skated away. Only to catch Franklin glance back at her, his gaze full of heat as he quirked a tiny smile that drew a heart triple-thump and arrowed fresh fire within.

Her breath was shaky as she exhaled. Her cheeks were so warm her makeup might slide off any moment. God forbid anyone had seen that.

Author Interview

Q: What was the inspiration behind Fire and Ice?

Carolyn: I think it’s fascinating how female reporters are still facing some of the issues of decades ago, with casual (& blatant) sexism, wage discrepancy, and mild to brazen forms of abuse. It astounds me that this continues to affect women who are simply trying to do their job, especially in this age of #MeToo, and during a time when women’s sport is finally getting mainstream attention. I loved being able to introduce a really strong heroine in Hannah Wade, who is still vulnerable, and needs a special man (like pro hockey player Franklin James) to help her find ultimate security in God, which helps her in other areas too. But of course, this attraction between sports reporter and sports star has its own professional issues too…

Q: How long did it take you to write this story?

Carolyn: Between research and writing it took several months to get the first draft done, then a similar amount of time for editing and proofreading. I like to write fast and concentrate until the book is done, so I don’t lose my headspace and can stay focused on the story – then I can write the next one.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Carolyn: I like this little section from chapter 14, where Franklin and Hannah are finally getting a chance to reconnect after ten years apart. They’re on his family’s ranch (which is based on a real ranch near Calgary that has its own Western movie set, and has sparked a new book series about the Three Creek Ranch), and the banter demonstrates their friendship, and also the attraction simmering between them:

“Just so you know I’ve never ever used the phrase ‘humble charm’ to describe myself.” He grinned. “I might’ve used cowboy charm once or twice.”

Her laughter increased.

“So, you’re saying I left no impression on you, huh?”

“And we’re back to you needing to know how people feel about you. Again.”

“Well, if you prefer, we can talk about how I felt when I first saw this supermodel friend of my sister in a swimsuit, like every teenage boy’s fantasy woman.”

Her cheeks heated. “Come on. I was sixteen.”

“You were perfect,” he said, his blue gaze drilling into her. “Still are.”

Q: What do you hope readers take away from Fire and Ice?

Carolyn: I hope readers see how insidious sexism is in the workplace, and are encouraged to stand up for themselves and for others. I hope that by shining a light on the unfairness that exists in certain sections of society that women will continue to use their voice to speak out against injustice, and realize that there is power in standing together and speaking up about such things. I hope readers also understand their worth is ultimately found in God, and it’s His love, forgiveness and grace that gives ultimate purpose and strength to our lives..

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers would not know?

Carolyn: I’m a musician and singer, and often lead worship at church. I have written songs and helped produce an album. So it was fun to incorporate characters, like Sarah Maguire in Muskoka Blue, who have some of these qualities too.

Q: How many bookcases are in your home?

Carolyn: Maybe 8? I have five just in my lounge room which I consider our ‘library.’

Q: How long ago did you start writing?

Carolyn: I started writing in 2010, after watching the closing ceremony of the Vancouver Winter Olympics and seeing an Australian female athlete holding hands with a North American athlete. I was fascinated by how a relationship could be sustained by two elite athletes from opposite sides of the world and tried to find out who they were, but when I couldn’t, I made up their story. I discovered how much I loved creativity and delving into characters and writing about relationships – it was such a rush! That first book became Love on Ice, which I finally published last year as part of the Original Six series (all the ebooks are on sale now for only 99c). Since then I’ve written many more, and now have over 30 books published with plenty more on the way.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a writer?

Carolyn: I always love hearing how couples meet and ultimately get together. Relationships are what makes the world go round, so I love exploring some of the emotional intricacies of people’s lives, their backstories, the way attraction sparks and flares, and lightening that with flashes of humor too. Since being published, one of my favorite things is receiving messages and emails from readers who tell me they’ve been touched by my books. It’s wonderful to see how God can use fiction to speak truth.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Carolyn: I enjoy watching movies, reading, taking my dog for a walk, doing ballet, and travel. Earlier this year I spent time (with my hubby) in England, visiting my sister and doing research for some of my books, which sparked so many ideas that I’m struggling to find time for them all! But I’m making the most of time with my family and my kids - who are teens / young adults - while they’re still at home. In a busy world, there’s something so nice about having everyone at home for a lovely meal and a board game or a movie.

Author Interview

Q: What was the inspiration behind The Colter Sons series?

Karen: My first series, the Prescott Pioneers Series, introduced the parents, Will and Hannah Colter. Then in my second series, I brought back one of Hannah’s suitors, Joshua. There’s a scene in Joshua’s story where he meets Will and Hannah for the first time after eight years. To drive home the point that the Colters had everything Joshua longed for, I gave them five sons. A few simple, strategically placed sentences sparked the idea for the Colter Sons Series, which follows the story of Will and Hannah’s five sons and one surprise daughter.

Don’t worry, you don’t have to read any of my other books to enjoy the Colter Sons Series. It stands on its own and I fill in any important things the read needs to know.

Q: Do these books work as standalones or must the series be read in order?

Karen: Each book does stand on its own and can be read in any order. However, I think readers will enjoy reading them in order as many of the siblings appear in the other books where they aren’t the main characters.

The books don’t follow their birth order either. Part of the timeline of the first three books follows the development of two railroad lines in the late 1880s – 1890s near Prescott, Arizona.

Q: Do you have a favorite book of this series?

Karen: I’m probably not supposed to, but I do. I love a good prodigal son story and book 5, The Restless Wrangler is just that. Though, I really do love each story. It was a lot of fun to write about a very diverse set of brothers and their surprise sister.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from The Colter Sons series?

Karen: Besides enjoying sweet love stories, I hope readers will take away a glimpse of the Christian life with its ups and downs. No Christian’s life is free from trials. Yet, how we lean into God when life throws us curveballs can make all the difference. I pray each book I write encourages readers in their own faith.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers would not know?

Karen: I remember my mother used to make up stories and tell them to me and my siblings as kids. She was also an avid reader. Sadly, she passed on many years ago. All three of these things about my mom have strongly influenced my writing. The fun storytelling mom inspired me to keep writing through the tough times. The voracious reader inspired me to water my passion for reading and writing. And the loss of this amazing woman—that pain is in every heart ache for every character I write.

Q: How many bookcases are in your home?

Karen: Ooo. Much to my dad’s dismay, I only have two. (He has an entire room filled floor to ceiling with books). One bookcase is filled with resources for the mechanics of writing. It sits next to my desk so I can reference them as I write. The other is filled with historical research references and inventory. All the other gobs of books that I read are on my ereader. My goal is to read 100 books this year and I’m already 65% of the way there. My wallet and my house aren’t big enough for that kind of reading addiction. 😊

Q: How long ago did you start writing?

Karen: My first novel was released in 2010. From 2010 – 2014, I released 5 historical novels and one contemporary novel. Then I wrote several unpublished Bible studies for my local women’s ministry from 2016 – 2020. The gaps in time were spent dealing with some difficult health issues. Then in 2021, I dusted off a few partially written manuscripts and have been writing as much as humanly possible around my day job. My husband deserves the most supportive husband of the year award, as he always encourages me to keep writing.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a writer?

Karen: Um. EVERYTHING! I love creating characters and getting to know them. I love researching things to make the stories feel more real. I love the creative process. I love dreaming big and sharing the resulting stories with readers everywhere. I even like the business side of writing.

The thing I like least is writer’s block. And I deal with that by having several manuscripts in process at a time. If one is giving me fits, I move on to another.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Karen: I have a full-time career as a Software Development Manager for a Christian ministry. Most of my evenings and weekends I spend a few hours writing. The rest of my time is split between church, time with my hubby and dogs, and reading. In 2022, I completely gave up TV in favor of reading, so that’s how I unwind these days.
