Author Interview: Mayhem and Moonlight by Jennifer Sienes

About the Book

Book: Mayhem and Moonlight

Author: Jennifer Sienes

Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance, Women’s Fiction, and Southern Fiction

Release date: April 16, 2024

Left at the altar holding the bill, a boatload of college debt, and piddly librarian salary has her praying for a miracle.

Lillian Murphy takes her life verse from a book title—A Series of Unfortunate Events. Could be it was on account of her jumping into things without first dipping a toe in to test the waters that landed her in such a position. A cozy, cardboard box would suit her just fine if she could find a way to heat it, but she’s hoping the good Lord will do some better. She’s done dreaming of happily-ever-after – She’d settle for just debt- and drama-free.

Luca Giordano knows the minute he lands in Shelbyville, Tennessee with his three young boys that he’s in over his head. Leaving the pain of his past behind, he’d also left his parents—and they’d done the heavy lifting. All his charts, graphs, and scheduling expertise isn’t enough. What kind of a productivity expert is he if he can’t be…productive? What he needs is a part-time Mary Poppins to swoop in and fill in for his gargantuan gaps—and Librarian Lillian seems the perfect solution.

But when Luca’s past converges with the present—and Lillian’s the catalyst—everything he loves most is at risk. How will a free spirit and fusspot find a way to happy ending?

About the Author

Award-winning author Jennifer Sienes holds a bachelor’s in psychology and a master’s in education but discovered life-experience is the best teacher. She loves Jesus, romance, and writing—and puts it altogether in inspirational women’s fiction. Two of the three novels in her Apple Hill Series (set in Northern California) were inspired by actual events. Her Southern fiction Bedford County Series is set in Tennessee where she now resides with her real-life hero (and husband).

More from Jennifer

I’m often asked where I draw inspiration for my stories. It was easy when I was writing the Apple Hill Series, because the Lord took me through a long season of loss ripe with emotional angst and faith building. So, two of the three novels in that series were inspired by actual events I lived through—my daughter’s traumatic brain injury and my brother’s suicide. Not exactly the stuff of happily-ever-afters. But being a romantic, I’m a sucker for a happy ending. It took quite a bit of spiritual growth and creative ingenuity (she says tongue-in-cheek) to be able to move past the pain and find the blessings for my characters. Proof that God uses every tear for our good and His glory.

The story behind Mayhem and Moonlight came from a friend of mine. Annie. Not long after I met her (at my release party for Night Songs) she told me about how she and her husband Peter came to be together. Annie was a school psychologist who had been left at the alter years before. Peter was a single father of three boys whose wife passed away from cancer. Annie loved children but was past her child-bearing years, so she was as enamored with Peter’s three boys as she was by the man himself. Inept in the kitchen, she shared many hysterical culinary malfunctions with me, including how she almost burned the house down on more than one occasion.

Main character Lillian was also inspired by an actual person—my daughter Nikki. Yes, this is the same daughter who suffered a near fatal car accident and went through months of rehab for traumatic brain injury. What a sweet thing to be inspired by her when she was dealing with a disability and again years later with master’s degree for library and information science—just like main character Lillian. That’s how our good God works, though, so I shouldn’t be surprised.

But of course, a romance needs a protagonist, and Lillian’s is Luca Giordano—single father to three young boys (just like Annie’s Peter) and a productivity expert in serious need of help. It wasn’t until after I started fleshing out ideas for this book that I’d even heard of a productivity expert. It was through one phone conversation with old friends who told me their son had written a book titled Winning the Week: How to Plan a Successful Week, Every Week. I could’ve never imagined purchasing this book to show support to my friends would lead to the inspiration I needed for Luca’s career.

And guess what? Using the techniques laid out by authors Demir and Carey Bentley helped me become a more productive writer, too! It was a win-win.

Once I got to know the characters, I let them loose in my imagination and had to race to keep up with them. That’s when I know my writing is in conjunction with the Lord. I literally cannot make this stuff up. I pray you will enjoy reading Mayhem and Moonlight as much as I did writing it.

Author Interview with Jennifer

Q: What was the inspiration behind this novel?

Jennifer: I met a woman named Annie at one of my release parties, and we became fast friends. When she was young, she’d been left at the altar (just like Lillian). But unlike Lillian, she didn’t meet the love of her life for several years. Peter, who had lost his wife to cancer, had three young boys, and Annie fell in love with them before she did Peter. Annie, a career woman, never learned to cook, so she had many kitchen fiasco stories. To this day, Peter does the bulk of the cooking—for his own good.

Annie shared that she felt like an utter failure, and because of this, decided to leave Peter. She thought he and the boys would be better off without her. As she was loading up her car, the youngest boy (who was five at the time) asked her where she was going. When she told him she was leaving, he started crying and reminded her that she promised to be his new mom. If she was going to run away, so was he. That little boy is now a grown man and recently got married. Needless to say, Annie and Peter have been happily married for over twenty years.

You will find shades of Annie and Peter’s story in Lillian and Luca.

Q: What was the most surprising thing you discovered while researching and writing this novel?

Jennifer: While I was wracking my brain to come up with a unique career for Luca Giordano, I had a phone conversation with friends who told me one of their sons had written a non-fiction book titled Winning the Week. To show support, I decided to purchase the ebook version, which was only .99 (and worth so much more!) It turned out their son is a productivity expert. I didn’t even know such a thing existed, and I decided it would be Luca’s career as well.

As I started reading the book to gain some insights into what such person does, my eyes were opened to how much more productive I could be if I actually took to heart the suggestions in Winning the Week. It made such an impact on how I approach achieving all the different aspects of a writing career—the writing (of course), marketing, creating blog posts and newsletters, etc. I still have a lot to learn, but never before have I been personally affected by my research.

Q: Do any of the novel’s characters hold a special place in your heart?

Jennifer: Lillian holds a special place in my heart. She is a librarian with a master’s in library and information science (just like my own daughter Nikki). And like my daughter, her particular job required nothing more than a high school diploma—so she was wasting her degree. But both Lillian and Nikki share the same heart for what their work. Nikki was a mobile librarian who spent a lot of time connecting with children. Ironically, after I turned in this novel to my publisher, Nikki was hired as an assistant research librarian at Tennessee State University, a position that Lillian herself coveted.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this novel?

Jennifer: My favorite quote from Mayhem and Moonlight is, “Curiosity and suspicion were kissing cousins—one might could kill the cat, but the other was a sure-fire way to kill a relationship.”

Q: What do you like to do when you aren't writing?

Jennifer: I had another interviewer ask this question, too. Let me start by saying I exemplify the saying Jack of all trades, master of none. My favorite store is Hobby Lobby. I recently told one of the cashiers there that if I worked in that store, I’d never take home a paycheck. I enjoy crafts, home décor, furniture refinishing, and I’m in the long process of making a doll house. These are all winter projects, of course. When the weather is nice, I would rather be outside. My husband and I just had a new house built, and I’m itching to start landscaping. Hobby Lobby might be my favorite store, but walking through a well-stocked nursery is my happy place. I am also learning to play the piano. My grandfather was a professional who never learned how to read music. He could hear something once and be able to play his own arrangement of it. However, I did not inherit his talent. And then there is reading, of course. It is not only a joy, it is a requirement if one wants to be a decent writer.

About the Book

To Catch a Coronet Title: To Catch a Coronet
Series: Best Laid Plans #1
Author: Grace Hitchcock
Publisher: Kregel Publications
Release Date: May 21, 2024
Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Sometimes the only way to outsmart a scandal is to find a crown big enough to silence it

Muriel Beau, country baker turned heiress, can't stop instigating outrage. She discards two arranged engagements, then further antagonizes Kent society by publicly proposing to a baron at a ball. His rejection leaves her with no choice but to flee to the city and to secure a coronet so splendid that her peers will forget her debacles. The glitter of the London courts convinces Muriel that it's possible to find the future she dreams of, until she finds herself entangled in yet another escapade--one that may cost her more than her crumbling reputation.

After years of serving as a privateer under an assumed name, Captain Erik Draycott, heir to Draycott Castle and soon to assume his uncle's title of Earl, returns to his London home to find it in disrepair thanks to his longtime nemesis. A staunch bachelor intent on returning to his ship, the captain is shocked when his mentor encourages him to take a wife. But while his alleged pauper status causes the potential London brides to turn their noses up at him, the ladies of Kent have no such qualms and are eager to fill his coffers with their fathers' wealth.

Caught in a whirlwind of high society and high seas, Muriel and Erik navigate a risky undertaking that threatens their futures and creating stakes that soar above the masts of Erik's ship. Will Muriel's bold charm and Erik's daring bravery be enough to outsmart the scandal and secure a future as glittering as the crown Muriel seeks?

"To Catch a Coronet by Grace Hitchcock is perfect Regency! This hilarious novel has it all: sparkling dialogue, a spunky heroine with a penchant for baking, and a dreamy hero who loves her in spite of her antics. I loved it and highly recommend!" --Colleen Coble, USA Today best-selling author of Fragile Designs

Excerpt

By the time her apple pie was ready to come out of the oven and her second batch of vanilla scones was ready to go in, she had a comforting sheen of sweat on her brow and her prayers had turned into singing—or rather bellowing—her favorite hymns. Wiping her hands on her apron, she worked out a recipe that she thought would be a match for the sponge she had tasted and promptly dropped during her calls this morning. She rose on her tiptoes to reach the tin marked Flour on the third shelf in the dry larder, which was acceptable if one was of an average height, but Muriel, being only an inch over five feet, could only scrape the bottom of the ten-pound tin with her fingertips. She snatched her wooden rolling pin from the table and used the tip to scoot the tin to the edge of the shelf, intending to catch it as it fell.

A man’s large, calloused hand shot above her head and seized the tin. “Allow me to assist you.”

Her song strangled itself in a gasp. Whirling, she rammed into his arm, causing the tin to slip from his grasp and the heavy pin from her hand. Both knocked him on the head, loosening the lid and showering them with flour as he fell to his knees with a grunt and then collapsed face flat onto the brick pavers.

“Lord, have mercy.” Muriel clutched her hand to her throat and sank to her knees beside the crumpled giant. Grabbing his muscular right shoulder with all her strength, she flipped the man onto his back and saw at once that his left arm was in a sling. His large, Grecian nose trickled blood from his fall to the bricks. Other than that and the lump already forming just below his thick chocolate hairline, he was in marvelous physical condition. With his impeccable jawline and the sun-kissed skin that she glimpsed beneath the flour, she knew he had enjoyed fine health before waltzing into her kitchen. She leapt to her feet and ran for the pitcher of water on the counter. Pitcher wrapped in her arm, she dipped her fingers inside and flicked water onto his flour-covered face as if he were a pie crust, continuing the practice until a fine paste had formed on his forehead and a moan escaped his full lips.

“Oh, thank God. I haven’t killed him,” she whispered, sinking onto her heels and wiping her forehead, feeling the grit of flour roll across her skin. She leaned over him, her dark hair spilling free from her coiffure over her shoulder, flowing down to his chest. “Sir? Are you hurt badly? Sir? Can you hear me?”

“You’re scapegoating me? Over the past four years, I’ve been your top performer.” Richard pointed to the man seated kitty-corner from him. “What about Edwards? Wasn’t he responsible for a three million—?”

“Quiet!” Entenza raised his voice and sat up straight. “This isn’t about Edwards, or Constapoulas, or anyone else. It’s about the image you present of ACM Technologies.”

Richard laughed. “So, this has nothing to do with my performance.”

“Our shareholders don’t take kindly to having a member of our board with a police record.”

“Ahh, I see.” Just as he thought. How could he win a battle against the truth? “Let me save you and the shareholders a little trouble.” He pushed away from the table, grabbed his briefcase, and stood. Neither a demotion nor an outright firing was acceptable. “I’ll have my office cleared in an hour. Other companies have been begging for my expertise. I guess it’s time I answer them.”

“So be it.” Entenza pushed a button on the conference phone. “Patrice, will you send in Cowell?”

“Cowell?” Could this possibly get any worse? “A security escort?”

“Protocol, son. I’m sure you understand.”

Richard pinched the bridge of his nose. “Perfectly, sir.” He gave Entenza a mock salute and strode from the room, slamming the door behind him.

Happy unbelievable birthday.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Chain of Mercy?

Brenda: A couple of “what if” inspired this story. When I began writing it, the show Sex and the City was very popular. I’d never seen an episode but still wondered “what if” a couple in that show got saved? I also pondered at that time, “what if” an abortion doctor became pro-life? While that aspect didn’t appear in Chain of Mercy, it did help set the stage for the story.

Q: How long did it take you to write this book?

Brenda: This was my first novel written and ended up being my debut novel as well, so writing it, including innumerable drafts, edits, critiques, and classes, it took about ten years. The first draft, though, was completed in about six months.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Brenda: While researching the book, what really took me by surprise was the impact abortion has on men. You didn’t hear about it then, and it’s rarely talked about even today.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Chain of Mercy?

Brenda: “…if there’s no God to answer to, then there’s no moral standard to live up to either. As long as I pretended God didn’t exist, I could live life how I wanted. I could throw off the guilt from my behavior. It was all about me.”

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Brenda: I’ve written stories since grade school. I even wrote plays back then that my class put on for other grades.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Brenda: I do not care for coffee or tea, which seems to be highly unusual for authors.

Q: What are you currently reading?

Brenda: I’m reading Flicker of Trust by Eleanor Bertin. It’s excellent!

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Brenda: I will read most any genre, but the books I gravitate toward are family drama or women’s fiction.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Brenda: I love singing, especially in ensembles.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Brenda: I love fall! I love the colors and the cooler air and fewer bugs. Basically, I love most everything about fall.

(Opening Lines)

A certain smiling blonde waitress had nothing to do with why Dr. Nick Matrone detoured to the Wharfside Cafe that morning. He needed coffee before seeing his first patient. The cantankerous Mrs. Bindle. An older widow who came into the clinic at least once a week complaining of one malady or another. However, in his professional medical opinion, Nick believed the woman was simply lonely. He could relate.

The sun glared off the glassy water to his left as his shoes clumped on the wooden boards of the wharf. The fishing boats were all out on Lake Michigan at this time of the morning. He’d learned enough from rooming with David Martins, a fishing captain, that such calm conditions made for poor fishing. He whispered a prayer for his friend. The man was engaged and needed the income during these lean times. Not that God listened. Nick just couldn’t shake the habit of bringing every worry to Him.

He turned his face away from the brightness as his mood darkened. He tightened his grip on his satchel. Beginning a day in a grouchy mood never ended well. His patients needed him to be positive, encouraging, to foster healing. A perspective that had been increasingly difficult over the last six months. Today's newspaper headline only added to the problem.

Coffee.

Nick plowed through the empty outdoor seating and pulled open the door to the Wharfside. He spotted several of the retired captains sitting at a table in the middle of the room and promptly spun around. He didn’t want to talk. Didn’t want to be jovial. The gregarious Italian. He barely restrained a muttered Italian phrase that would have had his mamma crossing herself.

Sometimes he wished his skin tone was several shades lighter. His nose, not so straight. His hair, not so black. Then people would see him as a doctor. Not as someone related to Al Capone, whose indictment for tax evasion dominated the front page of today’s Crow’s Nest Gazette. Just because Nick was also Italian. No matter that he had never been to Chicago, except to travel through on his way from New York City.

Yes. He needed coffee. Lots of it.

Frogs croaked closer to the water. Dusk fell heavy here. Tree branches obscured the remaining traces of light, but that was all right. If she escaped, it’d be at night. In three weeks, the moon would be full. That’d be her window. She’d wait for her uncle. Meet him, and then she’d decide.

A couple river bends later, a tiny wail echoed across the plain. Eyes-Like-Sky retraced her steps, quickening her pace, and scurried up the bank. Hold on, baby girl.

Up ahead, Garret Ramsey knelt beside the rock, fumbling with the cradle.

Whimpers carried on the breeze.

“I’m coming, baby girl.” Sky slowed and picked her way through a tangle of grass.

Ramsey lifted Little Star into his arms, his deep voice light, musical as he prattled to the child, the words indiscernible at this distance.

A half-hearted whimper answered.

The way Ramsey hoisted Little Star above him slowed Eyes-Like-Sky’s step. His hands gripped her sides, holding her like a little flying bird. She giggled, and he returned the smile. This man would make a good father someday.

Goosebumps shimmied up Sky’s arms. Good thing he was leaving. Before she had any more stupid thoughts.

About the Author

Author Lee Ann Mancini is the award-winning author and executive producer of the Sea Kids series, which can be viewed on Answers.TV, Pure Flix, Right Now Media, and SeaKidsTV.  Lee Ann earned a master’s degree in theological studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Trinity International University), as well as two master’s degrees — one in Christian and Classic Studies and one in Biblical and Theological Studies — from Knox Theological Seminary. She serves as an adjunct professor at South Florida Bible College and Theological Seminary and hosts the award-winning podcast, Raising Christian Kids.

Author Interview with Lee Ann

Q: Please give us a little introduction to your book.

Lee Ann: It is a well-researched book, written from a mother’s heart, to help everyone raise the next generation to love and honor Christ their whole life! To keep our children from walking away from their faith due to the ever-increasing anti-Christian agenda. To help parents and walk alongside them on their parenting journey with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit as our compass toward the right direction. It’s a how-to book for building a strong foundation in Christ from the womb to age seven and what to do after the foundation is laid. And how can we prepare a cracked foundation?

Q: What was the most surprising thing you discovered while researching and writing this book?

Lee Ann: God’s word gives us many directives on raising our children, and Proverb 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go is not a promise.” And it’s never too early to teach solid biblical wisdom to children.

Q: How long did it take you to write this book?

Lee Ann: 2-1/2 to 3 years of researching the brightest minds in children’s spirituality in addition to my biblical wisdom (Bible professor at SFBC) and writing and rewriting, I would say around five years until it was in print!

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Lee Ann:  Josh Mulvihill asks:

Could it be that one reason young people are doctrinally ignorant, spiritually confused, and living with a syncretistic faith system is that we have reduced our teaching to the couple dozen moralistic stories found in most children’s Bibles? Our children need the soul-gripping, life-altering, meat-based, Jesus-centered teachings of God’s Word. Mulvihill, Preparing Children for Marriage, 40.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from your book?

Lee Ann:  Don’t be distracted or freighted by the world; keep focused on the word of God, live out his principles, and organically, day by day, help connect your child’s heart and mind to Jesus. It’s not overwhelming; raising children to follow Christ is done in love, consistently living the Word, and understanding it’s never too early and never too late!

Q: Where can readers find out more about you and your book?

More from Lee Ann

Recent statistics show our youth abandoning faith at an alarming rate. 90% of 13–14-year-olds believe there is no absolute moral truth, and 75% of parents agree.[1]  In the cultural war against Christ-centered values, vulnerable young souls are our greatest casualties. It’s time to raise up a faith-armored generation and equip them to change the world. With the right resources, we can equip our kids with enduring faith.

Raising Kids to Follow Christ: Instilling a Lifelong Trust in God endeavors to remedy the statistically high rate at which children turn away from Christianity. Raising Kids to Follow Christ (February 2024 from Whitaker House) offers today’s families the resources they need to nurture children in faith. This expert guide offers developmentally appropriate and scripturally centered methods based upon top research and expert insights from the brightest minds in childhood spiritual development. Author and Raising Christian Kids CEO Lee Ann Mancini emphasizes truth wrapped in love and joy in a parenting approach designed to prevent children from abandoning their faith. Her reason for writing this book is to help readers eagerly search the Bible, looking for fresh truth they can find in each word of scripture — “for the word of God is living and active” (Hebrews 4:12, niv) — to build a strong foundation of Christ in their children that will last a lifetime.

Valentine’s Day Bible craft for your family:

Memory Verse: John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (ESV).

Supplies

  • Markers/pens
  • Scissors
  • Sheets of paper (1-2 per person)
  • Small jars/clear containers (1 per person)

Setup

  • Gather items and have them ready to use.
  • An adult can draw seven hearts on each sheet of paper. Make one sheet per person.
  • Optional: If children are older, allow them to draw hearts on their sheets of paper.

Say

  • Our memory verse, John 13:34-35, tells us that God wants us to love others in the same way He loves us. That’s how other people will know that we are His disciples.
  • God wants us to love everyone. A great way to start practicing loving others is to love the people you are closest to first.
  • I want you to think of seven people who you spend the most time with. We are going to start practicing showing God’s love to them this week.
  • Each of us will fill up a jar/container with hearts with those seven people’s names written on each heart.
  • We will pull out one heart each day this week and come up with ways to show that person God’s love all day.

Author Interview: Love Overboard by Shannon Sue Dunlap

About the Book

Love Overboard

Title: Love Overboard
Series:
Love Overboard #1
Author:
Shannon Sue Dunlap
Publisher:
Kregel Publications
Release Date:
May 21, 2024
Genre: Christian Romcom

A snort-laughing, cruise ship romance takes readers into topsy-turvy waters.

When a group of four quirky friends retire on a neverending round of cruises, their attire consists of more than floral shirts and gaudy skirts. Armed with walkie-talkies and battle plans, these relationship experts--who've dubbed themselves the "Shippers"--target hostess Lacey Anderson and director Jonathan King in their romantic schemes. But the young couple refuses to cooperate. They've been on the "love boat" together before, and it went down in flames.

Boss matchmaker Emily Windsor has orchestrated multiple romantic successes, and these two upstarts certainly won't get the best of her. The chemistry between Lacey and Jonathan is obvious, but the couple rebuffs every outlandish plot and "coincidental" meeting, forcing the matchmakers to chart a new course to true love--all while inadvertently thwarting drug smugglers threatening to ruin their floating home on the ocean.

This laugh-out-loud rom-com features loveable characters, over-the-top situations reminiscent of 1950s sitcoms, and a dash of mystery. The toe-curling romance will push the reader overboard and all in with Shannon Dunlap's new series.

About the Author

Lacey froze at the familiar sound. She recognized that voice.

Maybe it was a coincidence. There were lots of people on this deck.

Lacey moved again, at a cautious pace this time.

No need to be paranoid. The sweet- but- salty meddler couldn’t possibly know where she was. Lacey had avoided Emily Windsor ever since she recognized the gleam in the lady’s eye. She used to laugh at the incorrigible woman’s matchmaking schemes, but now that they were focused on her, Lacey’s stomach quivered like a lifeboat in a hurricane.

Romance wasn’t on her to- do list. Ever.

Static crackled, and Lacey heard the whispered words she feared.

“Target located.”

She fought the urge to run. It wouldn’t be dignified for a Monarch Cruises employee. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t take evasive maneuvers.

She swung on her heel and skulked away.

The shiny faux- wood doors of the ship’s cabins zoomed by as she hurried through the connecting corridor that led to the parallel hallway.

The heels of her navy pumps sank in the carpet and slowed her progress. Lacey glanced over her shoulder and saw a flash of floral print coming into view.

Not today!

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Love Overboard?

Shannon: I saw a report on TV about a woman in her 80s who skipped the nursing home and retired on a cruise ship. The image of her smiling and dancing with the cruise director stayed with me, and my mental wheels started to churn. What if there wasn’t just one woman? What if there were four? And their secret mission in life was to help the poor, clueless youngsters find love!

Q: How long did it take you to write this book?

Shannon: *Insert teary, laughing emoticon here.* Honestly, I’m not sure. The process goes something like this: You “finish” the book chapter-by-chapter as your critique group suggests changes. You “finish” it again and an author or agent you meet at a conference offers advice. You “finish” it again and a publishing house picks it up and sends it through four or five editors. I’m guessing from start to final finish may have been six or seven years.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Shannon: That cruise ships have a jail and a morgue. They truly are floating cities. As I researched the different aspects from the tiny worker accommodations to how they restock all that food for the buffets, the details can be fascinating.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Love Overboard?

Shannon: That would probably come from the big-hearted, unfiltered, hug-first-and-ask-later golden girl, Althea. “You sound like someone set your Spanx on fire.”

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Shannon: While growing up, I loved to read but didn’t really consider being an author. Books were such precious things that it seemed like you had to be a genius to create them. I didn’t decide to be a writer until I was getting close to finishing my college degree studying music. I think I was 20.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Shannon: I can drive a stick-shift Combi (small passenger van) on the British side of the road with the steering wheel on the right side of the vehicle. It comes from the school year I spent teaching in Botswana, Africa.

Q: What are you currently reading?

Shannon: A Lady’s Guide to Marvels and Misadventures: A Novel by Angela Bell. Part romance, part historical fiction, and part steam punk. It’s delightfully unique. Funny, poetic, and thought-provoking all at once. I highly recommend it.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Shannon: Traveling. The red clay beaches of Prince Edward Island, the Austen-esque homes of England, the Biblical sights of Israel, the crashing waters of Victoria Falls, and the exciting bustle of Seoul, South Korea. I recharge my spirit through travel. I hope, like my cruising septuagenarian characters, to keep exploring this big, beautiful world God created until the day I pass from this life to the next.

Q:What is your favorite season and why?

Shannon: Autumn. It’s grown more precious to me since I moved from Virginia to Houston. Here the seasons aren’t as distinct, and I rarely get to see the leaves change as I did on the east coast. This last winter, for some reason the weather differed and we got to see the riot of reds and oranges and yellows on the trees. It fed my soul.

Epic Book Launch: Scandals and Mercies by Kathleen Rouser

About the Book

Book Title: Scandals and Mercies

Author Name: Kathleen Rouser

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: April 23, 2024

He’s a reporter determined to uncover the truth, but the secrets he finds could crush her family—and their second chance at love.

Taken from her family’s farm to be raised by her wealthy aunt and uncle, Nora Armstrong has accepted that not only will she never realize her dream of becoming a teacher, she’d also rather be a spinster than submit to her cruel aunt’s society selection of a suitable husband. The one man who caught her eye betrayed her best friend. And she’s got enough on her hands, hiding her sister’s shameful secret from her aunt.

When the local home for unwed mothers burns down, the arson investigation brings big-city reporter James Cooper back to Stone Creek—and back into Nora’s life. James also has a meddling aunt who raises more questions than she answers about his past. Not to mention, he can’t figure out why Nora constantly rebuffs him. When his reporting casts aspersions on the local church and lays the blame for the fire and a series of robberies at the wrong feet, he risks losing his new position at the paper.

As they seek to unravel the town’s mystery, rescue endangered mothers and children, and navigate their own family secrets forced to light, James and Nora increasingly turn to each other for help. But can they overcome James’s lack of faith and the disapproval of Nora’s guardians to find a second chance at love?

Book Excerpt

“Come on, Cooper, we need more hands,” Reverend Ian McCormick yelled. Soot streaked the minister’s face and white shirt. His nostrils flared. His expression dared James to take part in the rescue efforts.

“Right.” He ground his teeth. Helping put out the fire was, no doubt, the most important task. But did anyone in this sleepy town understand the importance of a reporter getting the news to its citizens as well? He removed his coat, throwing it onto the back of a wagon, and rolled up his sleeves.

“Let’s go. We need relief in the bucket brigade.” Ian turned to his wife. “Sophie, we have someone to take your place. The women need you.”

The bright blaze silhouetted a line of men from town. They pumped water from the well into buckets, passing them along toward the fire and doing their best to help beat back the flames. He took the spot Sophie left empty, taking a sloshing bucket from the local carpenter, Mack Frost, who already appeared weary. How long had they been working?

Smoke rose in an ominous cloud. When they tamped it in one place, the bright orange flames ate up the wood in another.

Excerpt

Louisa wiggled in her seat. “So, did he ask you?”

Emmaline wiped her pursed lips. “Ask me what?” Innocence was not a characteristic she wore well.

“Emmaline Whitaker, you know perfectly well what I’m talking about. You’ve attended every event this season without a beau on your arm. Not that many haven’t tried. Will you be attending the New Year’s Eve soirée with Thomas Shankel?” Louisa’s tone was terse.

Emmaline flashed a mischievous smile. “Ah, the resident sleuth. Perhaps I should start addressing you as Miss Pinkerton. As for Thomas, well, my dance card remains delightfully open.”

Teddy felt like her eyeballs would fall out with the exercise they were getting. It would have been easier to turn her head with the volley.

Caroline lifted her cup in a mock salute, but she could not break the tension building between the two girls. “You’ve been taking lessons from your aunt.”

Emmaline’s steely gaze moved from Louisa and settled on Caroline, who broke eye contact and took a sip from the raised cup.

“I’m keeping it a mystery for your own good. None of us should settle. Mother warned me men can keep their secrets for only so long before showing their true colors. Besides, Caroline, unlike Adeline, who’s had her sights set on Jimmy Reeves since primary school, you’d have loved and lost six men by this point. I’m merely keeping you from heartache.”
