Author Interview: Soulful by David Espindola

About the Book

Book: Soulful: You in the Future of Artificial Intelligence

Author: David Espindola

Genre: Non-Fiction

Release Date: May 22, 2023

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has hit an inflection point – ChatGPT has popularized its use. The implications are staggering. Machines are gradually but relentlessly encroaching on what was once believed to be the exclusive realm of tasks performed by humans. The displacement of jobs and consequent technical unemployment is inescapable. But those who can collaborate with AI will be highly rewarded.

Soulful describes the proliferation of AI and its broad implications for the world of work and society in easy-to-understand language. It explains how Human-AI collaboration will increase productivity in Education, Healthcare, Science, Manufacturing, Service, and many other areas. The book discusses the human condition, what motivates and sets us apart from robots, and how to use our intuition to collaborate with AI. It teaches how to identify and develop unique human capabilities and skills that will be highly valued in the future, such as empathy and lateral thinking.

The book explains how increased productivity due to AI and a new creation-based production system could generate abundance, changing how we think about the economy and the meaning of work. In addition to abundance, we could benefit from technology’s unstoppable deflationary force, which may lower the cost of our basic needs – energy, food, communications, transport, education, housing, and healthcare – so that most humans could potentially enjoy a high-quality, low-cost living standard. It also considers the challenges in crossing the chasm between the current realities of inequality, environmental degradation, and economic uncertainty to this new environment where humanity could benefit from the sustainable production of abundance.

Soulful examines threats and opportunities from the advancement of AI and instigates deep reflections and thought-provoking discussions that will open the readers’ minds to new possibilities, preparing us to enter this unfamiliar territory. It provides new insights and investigations from multiple domains, including technology, neuroscience, social psychology, economics, philosophy, and theology. It concludes with a discussion about the soul – the uniquely human trait that is difficult to describe and impossible to impart to machines.

More from David

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is all the rage these days. Until recently, AI was only a topic of conversation within academic or high-tech company circles. But after the advent of ChatGPT, AI has captured the attention and imagination of the average person, as well as business people and legislators worried about its impact on our future.

In its current stage, AI is designated as narrow or weak because, despite its ability to do a few things better than humans, it does not have the general intellectual capabilities that we possess. The next stage, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), is the holy grail of computer science. It is debatable if and when we will reach the AGI stage, but if we do, it won’t be long before machines become superintelligent (ASI).

We learn from the bible that when God created the world, he had a particular role in mind for humankind:

“Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’”

Genesis 1:26

No other species has been gifted with the same intellectual capacity and communication skills as human beings, and this unique trait has empowered us to rule over all the animals and control the resources around us. But now, for the first time in history, a new “entity” known as Artificial Intelligence portends to take away the superior intelligence that gave us the ability to dominate the world.

Does this mean we will lose our superiority and control? Will the machines rule over all the earth’s animals, including us? The answer to this question will depend on your beliefs. Suppose you believe that human beings are organic matter driven by electric pulses and chemical reactions in our brains and that this powers our intelligence and consciousness. In that case, it is easy to conclude that superintelligent machines will overcome our superiority and rule the world. After all, machines are made of the same atoms and molecules, whether organic or not, so the only thing that differentiates them from us is their superior intelligence.

But if you believe human beings are more than organic matter — that we are spiritual beings designed by God for a specific role as described in Genesis — then the idea that machines will develop consciousness and the desire to rule the world loses its plea. According to the Christian faith, humans are much more than flesh and bones automatons programmed by DNA and driven by neurochemicals and electric pulses. God gave us a soul, an essential core of our being.

Some neuroscientists believe there is nothing beyond our brains, but if so, would superior “brains,” as in superintelligent machines, be more precious than human lives? Deep inside, we all know the answer to this question, but unless we are open to the possibility that there is more to us than physical matter, it becomes very difficult to explain why. Artificial intelligence is forcing us to ponder the age-old question that philosophers and theologians have considered: What does it mean to be human?

Soulful examines threats and opportunities from the advancement of AI and instigates deep reflections and thought-provoking discussions that will open the readers’ minds to new possibilities, preparing us to enter this unfamiliar territory. It provides practical advice to help the readers do well in a world surrounded by AI and offers a spiritual perspective to help answer the most profound questions we have been asking for thousands of years.

Author Interview with David

Q:
Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Daniel: My favorite quote is “In the future, knowing what to ask will be more important than knowing what to answer.” In reality, that future is already here—with the advent of tools like ChatGPT, entire professions, known as prompt engineering, are focused on knowing what questions to ask of AI. This new reality has profound implications for how we think about pedagogical methods—it’s a paradigm shift that will completely transform education.

Q: In what setting do you enjoy writing the most?

Daniel:  I like to write in my office with a fresh cup of coffee. I typically wake up early to start writing when it is still completely silent and before the busyness and distractions of the day start. Early in the morning my brain is fresh and full of ideas that were brewing in my subconscious mind while I was sleeping. This is the best time for me to get into flow.

Q: What do you like to do when you aren't writing?

Daniel:  I love to ride my bike, walk in nature, and go standup paddle boarding. I am also an avid soccer player, and I am grateful that even in my older age I am still able to play.

Q: What are you reading now?

Daniel:  I’m currently reading Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. I believe it is the intersection of human-based Emotional Intelligence (EI) and computer-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) that will power our future. My goal is to develop EI-AI models that will help individuals and organizations prepare for the future, so I’m doing a lot of reading and research in these areas.

Q: Where can readers find out more about you and your book?

Daniel:  Readers can find out more about me and the book on my website DavidEspindola.com. I’m also active on LinkedIn, so they can also connect with me there. I love to hear from my readers, so please reach out. I particularly enjoy reading reviews, and I really appreciate when a reader takes the time to do a review on Amazon or Goodreads.

Juliette blinked. Her parents had spent lavishly on her debutante’s wardrobe, on the finest schooling, seeing her launched successfully into society. Would her love for Daniel scandalize them? Would it ruin their lives and reputations? Would marrying Daniel compromise their ability to do their work? Often vital information was gathered at parties and balls and social events amongst the aristocracy. If her parents were shunned because Juliette had “disgraced” them with a common husband, they wouldn’t be in a position to gather that information. Daniel simply had to win the petition for the title.

Book Review: The Legacy of Longdale Manor by Carrie Turansky

About the Book:

In 2012, art historian Gwen Monroe travels to England’s Lake District to appraise the paintings and antiques of an old family friend, hoping to prove herself to her prestigious grandfather. While at Longdale Manor, she becomes acquainted with David Bradley–the owner’s handsome grandson–who is desperate to save the crumbling estate by turning it into a bed-and-breakfast. When Gwen stumbles upon a one-hundred-year-old journal and an intricately carved shepherd’s staff similar to one in a photo of her parents, she uncovers a connection to the father she never knew.

In 1912, after her father’s death, Charlotte Harper uncovers a painful family secret she can only confess to her journal. She and her family travel to the Lake District to stay on a sheep farm, hoping eventually to find a home with Charlotte’s grandfather at Longdale Manor, but old wounds and bitter regrets make it a difficult challenge. As Charlotte grows closer to shepherd Ian Storey and rebuilds her shattered faith, she must decide whether she will ever trust in love again.

Two women a century apart are taken on a journey to healing, faith, and forgiveness in this heartfelt dual-time Edwardian romance from bestselling author Carrie Turansky.

Purchase Link: Amazon

My Thoughts:

The Legacy of Longdale Manor by Carrie Turansky features two perfectly paced timelines of women (Charlotte in 1912 & Gwen in 2012) finding their places in life. Both characters search for healing from father wounds, struggle with uncertainties about the future, and experience a slow-burn romance. I liked both narratives equally but never encountered a moment when my attention was “hooked”. I could set the book aside for days without any compulsion to return to it.

The Legacy of Longdale Manor reminded me of earlier style Christian fiction in which conflicts resolve easily, trust is given instead of earned, and characters know just what to say. Some readers may enjoy this, but I wanted a bit more grit to the story. Both Gwen and Charlotte have issues and obstacles that add depth to the tale, but other than Charlotte’s extended struggle with her late father’s hypocrisy, situations tend to iron out with ease.

Happily, I enjoyed other aspects of the story: learning about sheep with Charlotte, descriptions of the English Lake District, Charlotte’s journal entries, and Gwen’s work as an art historian (though I wished for more details in that area).

In the end, I didn’t love or hate The Legacy of Longdale Manor by Carrie Turansky. It was okay to read once, but I will not reread it. This novel may appeal to other Christian Fiction readers who enjoy dual timeline romances set in the idyllic English countryside. Three stars.

About the Author

Hi, I’m Daniel Tweddell. I grew up in the Bornean and Philippine jungle as a missionary’s kid. My neighbors had monkeys for pets. Just behind the tree line, “ex”-headhunters slipped through the shadows with spears and six-foot blow guns. It was the perfect incubator for a kid’s imagination. As an adult, I did a lot of things from writing high-octane video games with my friends to having my own companies. But I always loved castles, wizards, and monsters the best. So now I write white-knuckle stories about magic woven with truths from my life’s journey. I live in San Diego with my wife and 3 kids.

Author Interview with Daniel

Q: What was the inspiration behind this novel?

Daniel: A good friend from way back in high school told me he was making a short film for his two boys. He knew how to film but said he couldn’t write a story to save his life. So I wrote a short script about two brothers who can’t find a reason to get along until one is forced to make the ultimate sacrifice. By the time it was done, he had become too busy to film, but the story had taken root in my soul, so I grew it into a book.

Q: How long did it take you to write this novel?

Daniel: About ten years. I had a lot of growing to do as a writer (I still do), so I ended up rewriting the story a dozen times. I also had a lot of life happen – the worst of which was finding my wife of 19 years dead in my bedroom. I ran away and traveled the world for a while. When I came back, I got remarried and had an instant family. I remind myself that Jesus never hurried. God is in control of time, so he never has to hurry. That doesn’t mean I don’t move quickly, it simply means I never have to worry when reality’s timetable doesn’t match mine. If I’m walking with Jesus, He’ll will make sure everything lands exactly how it should and when it should.

Q: What was the most surprising thing you discovered while researching and writing this novel?

Daniel: I had a chapter that just would not write. I labored on it for weeks and when it was done, I hated it. So I scrapped it and wrote it again. And hated it again. I began to wonder if I could write it. Could I even write a book at all? Year’s earlier I’d promised myself if I had to edit 1000 times, I would. So I tackled it for a third time, struggling with every word. The whole time, I knew I’d hate it. And when it was done, I loved it. Several of my readers said it made them cry. They posted quotes from it on their cubicle walls at work. I learned that good writing doesn’t need inspiration, only tenacity … and a lot of prayer.

Q: Do any of the novel’s characters hold a special place in your heart?

Daniel: Mom (Alealle / Alice) Her heartbreaking backstory spans centuries and empires, as do the scars from her time as god of the underworld, binding her on the brink of insanity. I could only give glimpses of her in this book, because after all, this book isn’t her story. But I will write it someday, I promise.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this novel?

Daniel: “Faith isn’t looking forward it’s looking back and stepping forward. It’s not a feeling it’s noticing.”

Q: What do you hope readers take away from this novel?

Daniel: I had a reader tell me they “totally felt the hand of God [and heard his] whispers in the writing.” I had others say how much the book encouraged them. Although I've dreamt of writing this story for decades, I had to be destroyed before I could honestly portray Josh's (the protagonist’s) journey. The truths about facing fear, about God making everything OK even when there is no way it can ever be, about suicide, and depression, as well as hope, and finding your destiny, they're all written from my journey through the depths of an utterly shattered heart to a life so good it feels like a fantasy novel. Whatever my readers might be going through, I hope the story encourages as well as entertains them. Maybe they’ll even meet Magic for themselves.

Q: If the novel was made into a movie, who would like you to see play the main characters?

Daniel: I have no idea, but I want Brian Goldner to produce it. He produced, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023), which was epic fantasy as it should be: well written, exciting, clean, and funny.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Daniel: I used to write music. My favorite pieces were the orchestral ones. If my books ever make it one screen, I’ll see if the producer can slip in a couple themes.

Q: In what setting do you enjoy writing the most?

Daniel: My favorite is cinematic classical music, symphonies by Brahms, Beethoven, Dvorak, Schubert, etc. My favorite place to write is a certain little coffee shop. The morning sun spills through picture windows and pools around little wrought iron tables. Arabic businessmen in their kaffiyeh’s stand in line behind moms herding toddlers. Shuffling at the end are barefoot college students with bed-head. The place is full color and sound, and I feel like its life absorbs into my writing.

Q: What are you reading now?

Daniel: I am halfway through Our Lady of the Artilects by Andrew Gillsmith. I’m also re-reading the classic, A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin.

Q: How many bookshelves are in your home?

Daniel: Sometimes I think my house is a giant bookshelf.

Q:. Who is an author you would recommend to anyone and everyone?

Daniel: I just finished How To Stop Time by Matt Haig. He’s one of the rare writers literary enough for my wife to enjoy, but speculative enough to grab my attention.

Q: What do you like to do when you aren't writing?

Daniel: I love mountain biking and hiking. I also love to invent things and bought a 3d printer. But which hobbies do I actually do? Build Roly-Poly habitats, build Lego spaceships, and play Roblox and Minecraft. Yep, I have a ten-year-old son.

Q:. Where can readers find out more about you and your novel?

Daniel: Ragabones.com

More from Daniel

I had a visual of a soapbox derby with the cars lined up from worst to best. The worst was made of cardboard with garbage can lids for wheels. The best was polished mahogany, with chrome wheels and velvet seat covers. Can you see the kids’ faces? One brushes old coffee grounds off his hood. He can’t face the crowd. Another polishes a gleaming fender and waves to his fans. I realized the difference between these cars isn’t the kids … it’s the time they spent with Dad.

I’m fraught with blind spots, bad habits, and shortcomings. I also barely have enough time, energy, or insight to manage my own life. How do I have enough for the lives around me who are so hungry for something more? I realized I live in a 5-loaf/5000-mouth world. I’ll never be enough, but I don’t need to be. Instead, I asked God to make this life and this book a father/son project.

Although I’ve dreamt of writing this story for decades, I had to be destroyed before I could honestly portray this hero’s journey. The truths about facing fear, about God making everything OK even when there is no way it can ever be, as well as courage, hope, and finding your destiny, they’re all written from my journey through the depths of an utterly shattered heart to a life so good it feels like a fantasy novel. Whatever you might be going through, I hope the story encourages as well as entertains you. If you haven’t already, you might even meet Magic for yourself.

Anonymity had its benefits. A plethora of them, in fact. She’d take that every day in every way if it kept the sharks at bay.

The fist punched hard from her right.

Warehouse behind her, Vienna Foxcroft eased her spine backward and with her left hand, blocked the blow. Threw a right cross. Nailed the guy in the jaw. He spun away as she stepped back, angled her body so it was parallel to the ground, and nailed the guy in the head with her boot. She landed, hurled herself into an aerial, again using her leg to connect with the second assailant’s head. V touched down and drove upward, drawing her legs up into hooks as she snapped out her right, heel thudding center mass.

Adrenaline drove her, but she remembered her position. Aware of her body in relation to the others coming at her. To the others fighting to stop the attack. The car revving behind them. Drug dealers trying to blow the sting.

“This way!” the sandy-haired hunk shouted, motioning her to him.

Lifting her chin, she started that way. Palmed the waist-high wall. Launched upward. Hiked her legs and vaulted into the air. Arms tucked to her chest, she rotated midair. Drew out the weapons holstered at her thighs. Landed, boots sliding on the oil-slickened concrete. Fired at the assailants converging on her.

Calves burning, she strained to maintain focus. Take down the bad guys. Do her job. Get paid. Lie low.

Vienna knew finding traction to stop in the oil slick on the road would be tricky, so she held her weapons sans triggers and side-spiraled out of the oil. Heard the crack of their weapons. She pitched herself forward into a roll. Over a barrel and the oncoming 70s model Pontiac Trans Am. Slid across the hood, over it, to the other side. She dove for cover behind a stack of crates.

Hands hit her back. She heard the click of the carabiner. Drew in a breath even as she saw the muscle-bound oaf scale the crates. Launch at her. He swung a bat at her. Crack!

Her head snapped back. She stumbled backward. Growled. Then shoved upward. Felt the crane haul her straight into the air as she aimed at him and the other two men. The first went down. She shifted her gaze to the leaking oil barrels. Smirked with an elaborate pause, being sure to keep her angle correct. She fired. The men went down. An explosion flipped the Trans Am twice.

She dropped, and angled herself sideways, spiraling toward the ground. Shoved out her boots. Nailed the landing with a partial squat. Touched the ground. Took in a breath. Kept her face down, hair spilling forward and concealing her features. Then slowly rose . . . up . . . up . . .

And cut!” Director Kerr Macleod pronounced.

Author Interview with Ronie

Ronie: My own retired military working dog, VVolt N629 (2008-2020), and having written the first series with TRINITY, TALON, and BEOWULF.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Ronie: Crew let out a quiet whistle. “You got a preacher on set?”
Greene frowned. “I . . . I don’t think so. Why?”
“Cuz I’m going to marry her.”

Q: What do you hope readers take away from Havoc

Ronie: A huge respect for military working dogs and their handlers, and a hope that people will find ways to support these amazing teams.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers would not know?

Ronie: I have a 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo.

Q: How long ago did you start writing?

Ronie: I’ve always been writing, but I started my serious commitment toward getting published in about 2000.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a writer?

Ronie: The adventure of learning and sharing a fictional world with others, being able to relay godly messages through the medium of story, just like Jesus did.

Q: Do you prefer to read ebooks or physical copies?

Ronie: Physical copies—nothing like the smell of a new book!

Q: How many bookcases are in your home?

Ronie: A lot. I’ve never counted, but there are definitely not enough.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Ronie: I love doing yarn art—cross-stitch, knitting, crocheting—and decorating my home (updating, remodeling, painting, etc.).

Excerpt from Running to You

Because when you do, you’ll leave me again.

Had he really said that? Out loud? Sam shoved food into his mouth, wishing there were a TV in this room. Anything to distract him from the woman by the fire. The way the flickering light danced on her sable-colored hair. The way her eyes, flashing in anger just a few minutes before, now held determination as she ate her dinner. As if she had to fight for every spoonful.

He wanted to fight for her. Fight like he’d never fought for anything. But he knew how that story ended. He might be willing to fight for her, but as soon as he didn’t measure up…

She’d be gone.

Easier to focus on things that couldn’t hurt him. Business associates. Casual girlfriends. Money, money, money. If business associates chose to work with someone else, who cared? If a casual girlfriend met the man of her dreams? Happy for you and have a nice life. Money was always there. Always the right size, always the right color.

Didn’t love him back, though.

All his pursuit of success and pleasure and money, and he was still alone. He’d even convinced himself he liked being alone.

And then Eliza had barreled back into his life and messed everything up.

About the Author

Robin Patchen

Robin Patchen is a USA Today bestselling and award-winning author of Christian romantic suspense. She grew up in a small town in New Hampshire, the setting of her Nutfield Saga books, and then headed to Boston to earn a journalism degree. After college, working in marketing and public relations, she discovered how much she loathed the nine-to-five ball and chain. After relocating to the Southwest, she started writing her first novel while she homeschooled her three children. The novel was dreadful, but her passion for storytelling didn’t wane. Thankfully, as her children grew, so did her writing ability. Now that her kids are adults, she has more time to play with the lives of fictional heroes and heroines, wreaking havoc and working magic to give her characters happy endings. When she’s not writing, she’s editing or reading, proving that most of her life revolves around the twenty-six letters of the alphabet.

About the Author

John Gilbert Wozniak (JW Gilbert) grew up in an Oregon farm town. He retired in 2016 as an international data center cooling expert. Around the turn of the century, he began writing as a hobby. After years of expert guidance and a lot of editing, his ArcPoint trilogy is complete. His intent is to write books that are enjoyed by all ages—biblically accurate—with a touch of adventure, romance, and humor. JW has been married to his best friend Darlene since 1980. They are both retired and enjoy the hobby of creating lapidary jewelry. He is a member of Oregon Christian Writers, Mensa, ALLi, and the Tualatin Valley Gem Club.

More from JW

I became an avid fan of Christian fiction, especially after reading This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti. I was working 12-hour night shifts as a data center technician and had ample time on my hands. At one point I was devouring a book per night but my favorite genre, action/adventure, was almost non-existent in Christian fiction. So, as is the case with many would-be authors, I decided to write the book I wanted to read. The setting? The future when Jesus is ruling the world, as told in Revelation chapter 20. My protagonist? Arcon, an adventurous young man from an isolated tribe of people. The premise? The people of ArcPoint don’t know that the outside world is safe and that Jesus has returned.

My first attempt at writing went well. I wrote my first draft in three weeks, edited it for six months, and landed a hybrid publisher with the final manuscript. The book garnered four- and five-star reviews, so I was pleased. (Not bad for someone who’d flunked English three times.) I was glad the reviews showed that the writing was good, but my readers were missing the message. I pulled it off the market.

For the past few years I’ve been honing my skills as a writer and reworking my ArcPoint story. There have been a few challenges. While researching, I found over a thousand verses in the Bible that sparked ideas for the time period I was writing about. Now the original book has become a trilogy, plus a prequel. However, traditional Christian publishers were not in the market for adventure stories, so I had to learn about self-publishing. And then, like a page right out of my prequel, the unexpected happened—a pandemic. I decided it would be best to put off publicizing until the entire trilogy was available. Now it is.

To see if the first book was ready to be self-published, I sent copies of Mojave Rift to Reader’s Favorite for professional reviews. It got five stars across the board. Then I entered Mojave Rift in their contest and won a silver medal. All the reviewers seemed to appreciate my inclusion of action, romance, and humor in a squeaky clean, fast-paced, futuristic novel.

I hope my ArcPoint series receives high scores from English teachers, but since I still don’t know a passive voice from a hole in the plot, we’ll see. Writing likable characters and adventure stories that run deep and inspire is something I enjoy. I’ve worked hard and it’s a thrill to get high audience scores.

BTW, did I mention the world-building for the isolated tribe in my story is set in America? Now that was a challenge.

Author Interview with JW:

Q: What was the inspiration behind this novel?

J.W.: A conversation I had with God. I asked Him how I could possibly process all the materials I had been blessed with for my lapidary hobby. He told me, “When the troubles of the world get severe, go hide in your shop and play with your rocks.” I imagined a group of people hiding from the tribulation terrors and waiting till Jesus returned. As a twist, these people were isolated for over a century and didn’t know He returned.

Q: How long did it take you to write this novel?

J.W.: Initially, three weeks. Then six months to edit and publish. Then I took it off the market and rewrote it into a trilogy. That took another six years.

Q: What was the most surprising thing you discovered while researching and writing this novel?

J.W.: That there is so much in the Bible regarding the time period. I’ve located nearly 1,400 Bible verses in 46 different books related to the thousand-year reign of Jesus from Jerusalem.

Q: Do any of the novel’s characters hold a special place in your heart?

J.W.: Probably Jarden. He’s like the glue that holds the ArcPoint Community together.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from this novel?

J.W.: There is hope for the future of mankind. After the tribulation period, earth will be ruled by Jesus and a number of resurrected saints who died during that time. These people can’t be bribed or tempted to seek personal gain, and will be able to detect fraudulent behavior.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

J.W.: I designed and built my own custom home.

Q: How many bookshelves are in your home?

J.W.: Over sixteen.

Q: Who is an author you would recommend to anyone and everyone?

J.W.: Frank Peretti.

Q: What do you like to do when you aren't writing?

J.W.: I’m a lapidary artist. I cut and polish rocks to find the beauty God hid within.

Q: Where can readers find out more about you and your novel?

J.W.: On my website, jwgilbertbooks.com. There are also numerous short stories related to the ArcPoint trilogy.

Be careful. The mountains can be dangerous.

The deputy’s advice rang in my mind as we slowed to a crawl to observe our wooded surroundings. The canopy overhead was thick, blotting out the receding sun, and our headlights were the only light.

“A person could disappear up here,” I said, pinching my hands between my thighs to still the nervous bounce of my legs.

Jordan’s lips thinned. “We might disappear up here at this rate. This map the sheriff drew may as well have been drawn by a kindergartner.”

We had already taken one wrong road, following it into a nook called Stillwater Hollow. There was no outlet, and we had to turn around and drive back.

“It’s a good thing neither of us is afraid of the woods,” I said, trying to lighten the mood. In truth, they still made my palms sweat and my pulse quicken.

I checked my phone. No bars.

Movement caught my eye, and I snapped my head up. Was it a bear? I searched the darkness, and I saw something, like light glinting off metal between the trees.

“Jordan, there’s something out there.”

About the Author

C.C. Warrens

Jesus and laughter have brought C.C. Warrens through some very difficult times in life, and she weaves both into every story she writes, creating a world of breath-stealing intensity, laugh-out-loud humor, and a sparkle of hope. Writing has been a slowly blossoming dream inside her for most of her life until one day it spilled out onto the pages that would become her first published book.

If she’s not writing, she’s attempting to bake something—however catastrophic that might be—or she’s enjoying the beauty of the outdoors with her husband. One of the many things she’s learned since she started this journey is that the best way to write a book is to go on a long stroll with her husband. That is when the characters—from their backgrounds to the moments that make them laugh or bubble over with anger—come to life.
