Heart. Soul. Mind. Strength. by Andrew T. Le Peau & Linda Doll

The history of evangelicalism cannot be understood apart from the authors and books that shaped it. Over the past century, leading figures such as pastor-scholar John Stott, apologist James W. Sire, evangelist Rebecca Manley Pippert and spiritual formation writer Eugene Peterson helped generations of readers to think more biblically and engage the world around them. For many who take their Christianity seriously, books that equip them for a life of faith have frequently come from one influential publisher: InterVarsity Press. Read my review.

Book Spotlight: The Matter of the Secret Bride by Darcie Wilde

About the Book:

Jane Austen meets Fleabag in Regency London, as a resourceful young woman with a talent for helping ladies of the ton with their most delicate and pressing predicaments finds herself facing a task of royal proportions. Literally.

King George IV is petitioning Parliament for a divorce from his queen on the grounds of her adultery. But rumor has it that the king secretly married Maria Fitzherbert—long before he married the queen. Now Mrs. Fitzherbert has been robbed—and she’s frantically calling on Rosalind for help.

Because what those thieves took is proof that she and King George did really marry. That single piece of paper could destroy Mrs. Fitzherbert and her family—or it could prove the king guilty of bigamy.

Rosalind races to investigate. With her is ex-Bow Street officer, Adam Harkness, with whom Rosalind shares a complex and rapidly intensifying bond. But a case of theft soon turns to murder.

Josiah Poole, a disreputable attorney specializing in helping debtors—and who was seen entering Mrs. Fitzherbert’s house—is found brutally murdered. Mrs. Fitzherbert has debts. Could she have staged the theft, and employed Mr. Poole to sell the marriage certificate? Or is the truth even more complicated? Mrs. Fitzherbert’s daughters have secrets of their own. And Poole himself had no shortage of enemies.

With suspicious coincidences mounting, and more danger encroaching, Rosalind and Adam must move quickly to unravel a history-making mystery that might just lead them straight to the palace itself . . .

My Thoughts:

One Prayer Away: Healing Words to Speak Over Your Day by Lauren Fortenberry has been a faithful companion to me over the past six months. I read the daily entries as a positive way to start off my day with comfort and encouragement. When I finished Day 90, I restarted the book, and it was well worth the second read.

The 90 daily readings in One Prayer Away were short. Each entry had a primary statement with encouragement and spiritual truths that supported the main idea. This was followed by a Scripture verse and a prayer. I found comfort in reading these thoughts and praying the provided prayer. Often, the book spoke to my situation with the encouragement I needed. Topics included: anxiety, overwhelm, strength, direction, healing, peace, and more.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I was provided a copy of this book by the author or publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.

From Chapter 1 of A Journey to Unshakable Faith

Indoors in a well-furnished room in the left wing of the castle, a young girl stood gazing out of the glass-paned, crystal-clear window. Who would have thought the siege would last so long? Only last week, her head had been full of the kind of things every ordinary fourteen-year-old girl dreams of. Then, like an icy blast of wind freezing anything standing in its path, an enemy from the North had come, and nothing was the same.

A castle under siege. Turmoil within and an enemy without. These things used to seem far off, the kinds of circumstances she read about in books that vanished when she closed the cover. Now, they were just as real as the invading army, surrounding and slowly closing in—old, ruthless, and terrible.

A tear slowly slid down her cheek. She hastily brushed it away. More followed. Did no one know of their plight? Doubts and fears whirled through her mind. Did God not hear them? How could He allow this to happen? She began to pace back and forth as she mentally rebuked herself.

Now, Esther, you know that’s not true. Of course, God hears us. But why is this happening to us? Why doesn't anyone come to our aid?

Series: Dauntless Defenders #1
Author: Taylor S Newport
Publisher:
Independently Published
Release Date: November 7, 2024
Genre:
Christian Action Thriller

The enemy is relentless, but they made one fatal mistake: they underestimated him.

Australian mercenary Tyler Reid, known as "The Ghost of OZ," has a talent for evading detection, a skill that has caught the eye of multiple government agencies. When a shadowy group targets a CIA asset and her revolutionary drug ND1, the Deputy Director calls in Tyler. Eager for action, Tyler takes the job. He soon realizes that the enemy is not only after the drug, but also out for his blood. Then the mission goes south, and he is forced to seek an unlikely ally.

For covert foreign operative Alexandra Romanova, freedom is a distant dream. Escaping one prison only led her to a more dangerous one. Her deadly skills are at her boss's disposal, but she’ll use them only to escape. Her final chance hinges on retrieving ND1, but the elusive Ghost of Oz complicates things. Tyler Reid isn’t an easy mark, and the better she gets to know him, the more she questions the mission she's tasked with. Soon she faces a dire choice: kill a man she is convinced is good, or pay with her own life.

As Tyler and Alex venture beyond their orders, the line between enemy and ally blurs. On the edge of failure, trust becomes a dangerous gamble with every decision dragging them deeper into the line of fire. As enemies close in and alliances shift, they are ensnared in a ruthless battle where survival depends on split-second choices. In this high-stakes fight, time is running out, and the margin for error is zero.

Line of Fire is the first book in the Christian thriller series Dauntless Defenders. It is NOT a standalone novel.

“I heard about what you did in the Congo. I was impressed by your ability to rescue the journalist while being hunted by terrorists. I was even more surprised that you managed to get out of the country without leaving any records.” Rawlings glanced around the room for a moment.

Tyler met his gaze. The only way to avoid being tracked was to stay under the radar. That was exactly what he’d done. Despite having a passport, he chose to take a less obvious route back to Oz. “I took a cargo plane.”

Rawlings frowned. “So, you paid the pilot to smuggle you into the country?” He crossed his arms.

“He never knew I was on the plane.”

Was Rawlings…smiling? The expression was foreign on the Deputy Director’s face. “Ghost of OZ is right.”

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Line of Fire?

Taylor: A lot of different things to be honest. Books. Movies. The Bourne and Reacher movies, among others, inspired me quite a bit. I’ve always been a fan of action thriller books and movies, but the language and inappropriate scenes always bothered me. I wanted to create a series where people had the same suspense and tension without any of that. That led me to create the final version of Line of Fire.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Taylor: It took probably eighteen months to write the version of the book that I published. But I had multiple versions prior to this that will never see the light of day. Lol. Those are better left forgotten. The current version is all I want anyone to read. I think that by November of last year, I had the rough draft complete. But without any help/mentoring in writing prior to that, I had a lot of work to do with my book, especially getting it to be Deep POV. So I spent January and December rewriting a chunk of it and entered it into the Genesis Contest. While waiting, I edited it further. Changed some scenes, deleted others, added some more. I made sure that my book was ready for publication by the time that the winners and finalists of the contest were announced—I was thrilled to discover that my book was one of three Finalists. So…I’d say that it was at least short of two years for the current version to be completed.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Taylor: Hmm…I don’t know anything specific to be honest. I mean, I did so much research. This book, while fictional, has as many factual things as I could find and pack into it. The characters are as realistic as I could get them. I did extensive research on Australian slang to make sure the MMC sounded authentic. I also had to figure out all of the weapons. But the gambling scenes in the book may have been the hardest to learn. It’s hard to write something that you can’t do. It took me several days of research to figure out the basics to poker.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Line of Fire?

Taylor: Favorite quote? What? How do you expect me to find one??? It’s so hard. Okay. Fine.

Here’s one of my favorites: “Because I need a ghost.”

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Taylor: My sister got me into writing. Not on purpose. She liked to play around with story ideas and I was just a jealous little sister to be honest. For a while, I wrote kids stories that also won’t be seen by another human eye. I don’t think I ever really stopped writing…or at least thinking about writing for eight years. Something that made me really want to be a writer was reading Ranger’s Apprentice and then Ronie Kendig’s books. After reading Ronie’s books, I think I really tried harder to be a writer.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Taylor: I’m a lot younger than I seem.

Q: What are you currently reading?

Taylor: I’m a fast reader so by the time you’re reading this I’m probably reading a fantasy book of some sort. I have a long list of fantasy ARC books to get through and review. ;)

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Taylor: Oh my…I hate this question. LOL. I love thrillers, romantic suspense, and fantasy. I can’t really choose between them.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Taylor: Reading…But I also do archery and sew. These hands are dangerous. Hehe.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Taylor: Autumn. I just love the colors, the cool temperatures, and the unique feel. Also my birthday is in November so I’m a fall girl all the way.

About the Author

Stella pulled on her favorite hat, the only remnant of her ski gear, and exited the truck. A quick inspection confirmed her fear. A flat. She shivered and shoved her hands into the deep pockets of her grandma’s parka, thankful for the warm pair of comfy Sorel boots.

Had anyone from Rogers and James Public Accountants Inc., her former downtown employer, seen her allowing Milkbone to ride shotgun in her grandpa’s pickup, they wouldn’t have believed their eyes. Thankfully, the chance of that happening was virtually zero.

Milkbone scratched at the window.

“No,” she said sternly, patting the pockets for her cellphone. The wind picked up. If only I remembered to throw a tool bag behind my seat.

Stella took off the cable knit mitts and tapped her phone to life. The frosty air nipped at her fingers. No service. Hoping for the impossible, she crossed the road. No luck.

She needed to get to work fast. Mr. Barnes insisted the store always be open on time, with no exceptions. The delivery guy never waited. And as if on cue, Milkbone changed his tactics to whining.

Stella did a quick 360 and scanned the seemingly endless fields stretching on both sides of the road. No farmhouse. She had been driving through this stretch for months now, not considering the possibility of becoming stranded with no help to be found.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Once Upon a Horse

Helena: When my husband and I bought our first farm, we didn’t know much about country living. I wrote Pitchforks and Pedicures that pretty much candidly describes our experience. We have met so many great people along this journey, who were most helpful and introduced us to farming. One of them was Sarah, who worked at our local feed store. As I got to know her better, I discovered that she rescued horses. I took her out to lunch. We talked about all kinds of horse related things, and she told me about her recent trip to Kentucky. Our conversation turned to race horses, and that opened a whole new world to me, and a story was born.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Helena: I’m a fast writer, so I’d say about two months.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Helena: When I started to research this story, I had no idea how complex the world of thoroughbreds is. And by no memes do I claim that I understand it now. It’s a combination of deep passion, science and life-long commitment. I hoped to crack open the door for my readers, so they can take a little peek, without getting overwhelmed with facts and figures. I hope I have accomplished that.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Once Upon a Horse

Helena: I like this quote, because it captures the relationship between Stella and her rescue dog Milkbone. Once Upon a Horse is not only a love story between Jason and Stella, but it also portrays the love for our pets and animals. These creatures make our lives so much better, with their unconditional love, as well as their occasional mischief that makes us smile. I wanted to capture that in this story.

“All right.” She held the door open for him. “Go in and check.”

Milkbone zoomed straight to his doggy bed behind the counter, fetched a stuffed duck chew toy, and brought it back to the front door.

“See, no one took it,” she patted his head. “Now, let me get to work.”

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Helena: It was in the summer of 2020, at a writers conference when one of the most accomplished authors of our lifetime looked at my work (I wrote for magazines until that time) and asked me what I wanted to do. With barely enough confidence to form a complete sentence, I told him I wanted to write a novel. His reply astonished me, because right there he gave me his address and told me to send him three pages of my manuscript. He agreed to mentor me, and walked alongside me, as I learned how to write fiction.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Helena: Hmm, most readers may not know the names of my three goats. Rosie is the first goat I ever bought, and that too is a funny story which may end up in a book one day. Carmen is a sweetheart, and a great milker. Her daughter Iris is much like her mom, and comes to me when I call her name. If my husband allowed me, I would house train them, because at times they listen to me better than our dogs.

Q: What are you currently reading?

Helena: I Think I Was Murdered by Colleen Coble and Rick Acker.

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Helena: I like romantic suspense, and also clean romance. But I also read biographies and historicals.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Helena: I love to garden. My husband built several raised beds for me, so during the summer I spend a lot of time tending my vegetables, and of course the flower gardens around our house.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Helena: I do love summer, because we spend a lot of time outdoors. Living on a farm is fun, but also a lot of work. Summer brings tomatoes, berries, and of course hay for our goats. I love the sounds, the wonderful scents and also the opportunity to host BBQ and share all the God’s beauty with our friends during the beautiful, sunny days of summer.
