A society woman leaves her comfortable lifestyle so that she can help her daughter adjust to the arrival of twin sons in a small town where the courageous doctor teaches her about taking risks.

Wealthy and sociable Margaret Millerson has always thought of her brother’s Chicago mansion as her home. But when she receives the telephone call that her daughter has given birth to twins three weeks ahead of the expected due date, Margaret must leave her comfortable home, her family, and her friends to travel out of state. While she is helping her daughter care for the infants, Margaret becomes reacquainted with the town’s doctor, Matthew Kaldenberg.

Dr. Matthew Kaldenberg stays busy caring for the health of the citizens of his small town. His profession offers him daily practice in defeating death, his greatest enemy. During the twenty years since losing his own wife and baby in childbirth, Matthew has saved his money for the purchase of a flying machine. But when Matthew takes Margaret for flights on his biplane, he learns that his dreams of rising above the griefs and losses of his past come with a cost. He doesn’t want to lose the trust of the people he cares about most, or the chance at a relationship with Margaret.

Both Matthew and Margaret must make difficult decisions to hold on to the love they have discovered. Will Matthew’s heart recover from sorrow? Will Margaret find her true home?

Excerpt

“Margaret, I have something I must tell you. I’ve kept it to myself for a very long time, but I can no longer conceal it. You see, I’ve fallen in love with you. It began on the evening of your daughter’s wedding and has grown ever since. I loved you the moment I first saw you. Now that you are back in town, I find my feelings to be even stronger than when we first met all those months ago.” His chest collapsed. What a long speech for a man who rarely shared anything but the facts if he could absolutely help it.

A pink glow stained Margaret’s cheeks. “Oh, Matthew. Can you believe, I’ve felt the same way?”

“You have?” The thought had flitted through his mind, but he hadn’t dared to take it seriously.

She nodded. “Yes. I’ve loved you ever since the time we spent together at Karen’s reception. I went home to Chicago with you in my heart. Not a day has gone by when I don’t think of you or wish for another evening with you.”

“And now I’ve given it to you.” He reached for her hand and held it.

“Not only did I get to spend this evening with you, but I’ve gotten you all to myself.” She glanced at him like a child might who’d confessed an act of wrongdoing.

She had no reason to feel guilty with him. He’d wanted time alone with her too. “Do you think, would it be possible? I mean, I tell you these things because I would like to begin to court you.”

A hint of sadness entered her gaze. “I don’t know that I’m ready.”

“I’m sorry if I’ve rushed you.”
