Excerpt
He shook his head. “You would not be safe.” He continued, “At Lord Sherborne’s urging, I’ve purchased a common license.”
My breath caught. I repeated his words, “A common license?” He spoke of a union. Of marriage.
“It is only fair.” He pushed a hand through his hair again. “I’m the one who brought you here into this dark lair. I take full responsibility for your safety.”
My face burned. “I would not force you to suffer the consequence of an unwanted marriage.”
“Suffer?” Amusement bent around his lips. He bent to my ear. “I assure you, being married to you would be no trial.”
“We haven’t known each other but a few weeks, and yet—” I stumbled through the tangled vines of my thoughts and feelings.
He finished my sentence. “And yet I feel as though we’ve known each other forever. I’ve never met a better woman.” His voice grew serious and quiet. “Nor do I wish to meet another. You’re all I have ever hoped for.”

Author Interview with Ann
Q: What was the inspiration behind An Opportune Proposal?
Ann: Old superstitions surrounding the New Year holiday triggered much of the idea behind the story, along with thinking about other literary heroines who were also vicar’s daughters such as Margret in North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.
Q: How long did it take you to write this story?
Ann: About 3 months.
Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?
Ann: I have a few that might give details away, so I’ve settled for this one. Was fun to imagine Jane’s first taste of chocolate:
“A tray carrying two cups of chocolate was brought in. I’d only ever heard of the luxurious drink. The first sip surprised. The second, my eyes closed involuntarily. By the third, I was indeed thankful I’d come to this new experience. Chocolate was far more delicious than I dreamt it could be. This part of my new world I could well accept!”
Q: What do you hope readers take away from An Opportune Proposal?
Ann: That we, as believers, regardless of the circumstances, can trust His presence. He is with us. That goodness and mercy do indeed follow us, as Psalm 23 states.
Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers would not know?
Ann: When we moved into our present 1880’s home and began cleaning up the grounds, we discovered a treasure trove in our backyard. Thus, backyard archaeology was born! Some of our finds include an inkwell, a silver spoon, and a copper bracelet from the Chicago World’s Fair.
Q: How long ago did you start writing?
Ann: I started writing 20 years ago
Ann: Playing with words. Imagining living in the past. Casting characters that must become a hero or heroine enough to inspire the reader to “press on” in the real life. Then, by the grace of God, binding those words in a book and sharing with others. Truly humbling.
Ann: I have a large collection of both! I love ebooks for reading in the dark and travel—and physical books because they don’t depend on a power source to work, that new book smell (right?), beautiful bindings, and one day, the testimony they have the potential to leave behind.
Ann: A grand total of 8, in varying sizes.
Ann: I enjoy spending time with my husband while antiquing or visiting historic sites. And, of course, reading!
