Excerpt
Some people believe children can’t be sociopaths. Kids are innocent, they say. If a kid commits a shocking crime, they say, it’s because of society. Or some glitch in their upbringing. Because warped brain chemistry in a kid isn’t possible.
Well, those people are wrong. My former friend Nel defied those misconceptions and then dared you to object.
In sixth grade, I caught my first glimpse of her cruel streak. She showed me a bruise on her upper arm. “My dad did it,” she said. Dark red and hard to miss, the bruise remained on proud display as if it were a new tattoo. Word got around, and CPS showed up at her door, questioned her dad, and placed Nel into foster care.
I missed her companionship, her brilliance. A light had gone out in the classroom. Her intellectual energy was the contagious kind, the kind that made the rest of us smarter too.
I went to her house and knocked.
When her mom answered, I jolted back a step. She looked ten years older. Red streaks marred her face, and she stared at me as if she didn’t know who I was. “Nel doesn’t live here anymore,” she snapped and started to shut the door.
“Wait!” I pleaded. “I want to talk to her.”
She gave a bitter laugh. “After what she did to her father and me?”
“I-I thought her dad—”
“She lied. She inflicted that bruise herself. She was mad because we took some of her privileges away after she deceived us. Forget her. Nel is a narcissist, and you’re better off without her in your life. Because if you ever get on her bad side, she will ruin you.”
About the Author

D.K. Till writes Split-Time Fiction With A Twist, a blend of the dual timeline fiction she enjoys mixed with a big helping of the sci-fi she loved as a child. The indie author from the land of microbrews and coffee snobs fell in love with reading in kindergarten when her older sister taught her to read. She used to impress her parents’ friends by reading aloud the entire short story The One Hundred Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. In first grade, she knew she wanted to write stories, too. Throughout her childhood and teens, she either had her nose in a book or was attempting to write one.
But life got in the way, marriage and children set her dreams aside for higher purposes. Today, with children grown and enjoying retirement, she’s reopened that dream package and is now living the life she had only imagined.
The author is a huge fan of the Back to the Future trilogy, inspiring her to write time travel, too. Thus the Time Passengers series was born, perfect for fans of Back to the Future and The Terminator. A classic rock lover, she names her titles after hit rock songs of the 60s and 70s - Starry Starry Night, Midnight Rider, and Nights in White Satin.

Author Interview
D.K.: As I was brainstorming ideas for Book 2 in my time travel series (Time Passengers), it occurred to me that I could write a whodunit and have it set in the future. I asked myself, what if someone invented a time machine and used it to make money by transporting current-day citizens to the future for a day? And then what if that very host got murdered once they arrived? The passengers would be stranded in an alien world with no way to get back! The more I thought about it, the more I knew I’d found a winning formula.
Q: How long did it take to write this book?
D.K.: I started in August ’23 and sent it off to my editor in January ’25. About a year and a half.
Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?
D.K.: How fun it is to think up pretend but realistic future technology. And to make it believable for the reader! (This was also true for Book 1, Starry Starry Night, a dual-timeline thriller.)
Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Midnight Rider? How about a favorite scene?
D.K.: When the local media describes Coltrane McMurray, who built a time machine to transport paying customers into the future, they dub him “The Orville Wright of Time Travel.”
One of my favorite scenes is when the main characters discover they are stranded a hundred years in the future—for good this time. And they have no way to get home. Another favorite scene is when my main character, Thea, masters 22nd century technology in order to solve a murder.
D.K.: At the tender age of 6. I fell in love with books after my older sister taught me to read, and wondered if I could write a story as good as my favorites. I experimented off and on over the years, but was well into my fifties before I published my first book.
D.K.: I raised my three sons mostly as a single mother, starting from when my oldest was six. They are all in their thirties now 😊 and I’m very proud of all three!
D.K.: A Million Little Choices by Tamera Alexander. So far, a great read. Her MC is the type of heroine I like to read and write about. Someone who didn’t necessarily choose the “traditional Christian” path of life. Her MC, Claire, is a successful interior designer, a career I once considered for myself. My own protagonist, Thea Daniels, is a journalist at a local newspaper, another career I’ve dabbled in.
D.K.: Psychological thrillers, such as books by Harlan Coben and Joy Fielding. I also like courtroom dramas. The Christian market seems a bit bereft of true psychological thriller novels. Steven James is one such author that comes to mind; also Brandilyn Collins and a handful of others. So that is a niche I’m hoping to fill with my time-travel thrillers.
D.K.: I’m a puzzle fiend. I always have a jigsaw puzzle, sudoku, and crossword handy. Now that I’m retired, I have more time for them.
D.K.: Here in Portland, no season is lovelier than spring. I always look forward to early March when we set our clocks forward and the daylight begins to linger in the evenings. Our lawns burst with vivid greens and roses sprout their colorful blooms. There’s a reason we’re known as the Rose City.
