At last, the day of spinning yarn came to a well-earned end. Caitlin tidied up her station, ready to step into the fresh air. Autumn brought shorter days, and the sun was already setting when she exited the Mill. Knoxley was waiting for her, propped against a stone wall, and her heart sped up half a beat. 

She could not pinpoint the first day she felt this way. It was only Knoxley, after all. He was her brother’s best friend, whom she had known all her life. But both slowly and all at once, she found herself painfully aware. If she said something awkward, it was akin to slow death, and when she made him smile, it was like coming to life. 

“Afternoon,” she smiled, approaching Knoxley where he stood. 

“And a lovely one at that,” Knoxley grinned, a twinkle in his deep brown eyes. It certainly was. The setting sun cast golden hues across the Manufacturing District, bathing quaint wooden shops in its glow. Knoxley apprenticed at the Smithy, only a few buildings down, and he made it a daily habit to escort the Oriels home. “Shall we?”

C. B. Sharp has been writing magical tales since she was a child, dreaming up imaginary worlds. She has a degree in Elementary Education and taught elementary school in remote northern Canada. After her northern adventures, she founded a successful tutoring company. In addition to teaching and writing, she also enjoys visual art, graphic design, movie marathons, cooking, and quality time with her loving fiancé and quirky cat, Munch.
