“What are you thinking?” Perry asked Erin.
“The different criminals the Snitch ripped off over the span of decades, all the dangerous types she would’ve come across from a life spent in organized crime, even members of law enforcement at every level who she routinely humiliated. That’s hundreds of people with a motive to kill Laney Hicks, and yet, something tells me her murderer lives right here in St. Claire.”
Her gaze left the couple and moved to Perry. Her deep brown eyes widened. She studied him, and he saw a flash of vulnerability and worry. Like she feared what the door that’d been opened would lead to. Was this an involuntary crack in her assertive foot-always-on-the-gas attitude, or was this transparency? A fearlessness to not balk or deny the hard truths in life. A need to put her at ease swelled inside him. Perry swallowed.
“Sounds like you’ve done all the hard work, then.” A feather-sized wisp of her dark chocolate hair floated on a gust of icy wind.
“How do you figure?”
“You’ve eliminated the majority of our suspect list.” He nudged her with an elbow. “We’ll probably have this wrapped up by suppertime.”
She crinkled her nose as though deciding whether he was being serious and then chuckled. “If we manage that, dinner’s on you.”
Perry winked. “Deal.”
