Christmas … a time of reunions and unexpected surprises.

A simple favor, a best friend's promise, and the end of the line.

Wisconsin, 1931—When Gideon Lundgren agrees to escort his best friend's sister to Manitowish Waters, plans go awry when she witnesses a robbery. He thinks he's merely escorting the girl he once knew, but she's grown into a charming beauty.

Evangeline Whitaker's older brother always warned that her kind heart would be the death of her. It might at that. First, when she's an unwitting accomplice to a robber. Second, when her childhood crush becomes her bodyguard.

With a robber on their trail and a tangle of emotions between them, Evangeline and Gideon detour to his boss's cabin to wait out the ensuing manhunt. However, Evangeline's Christmas spirit might be the death of them both.

One cabin in the Northwoods … a decade of Christmas miracles.

A sweet 1931 Christmas mystery featuring a closed-door romance between a protective bodyguard and the woman who witnessed too much.

Book Excerpt

Gideon’s mind swirled. Evangeline Whitaker sat beside him, and she was no longer the little girl he remembered, the little sister of his best friend, the girl in the braids and the torn dress because she had climbed the tree after them. No, she was most certainly not a little girl anymore. She was a full-grown beauty. Not show-girl beauty, nor wealthy beauty, but, land sakes, her smile … no, more than just her smile.

He had seen one too many hardened criminals, females included. But Evangeline was innocent—not naïve, though, no matter what Evan thought of her. Her goodness came across as naïveté, but always had. He’d never trade her child-like faith for his jaded perceptions of humanity.

Evan never quite saw his sister as the whip-smart little girl she had been, but Gideon had. In fact, he thought it easy to spot in the way she had been able to keep up with them. Even if he and Evan had wanted to leave her behind, she never begged them to play with her, never whined for them to wait up. She simply … kept up.

Now, here she sat beside him, looking vulnerable in a way that struck him in the heart. Evan had charged him with her protection, but this knapsack business made that simple promise a tangible oath.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write The Robber and the Witness?

Danielle: I love taking characters and tossing them into a situation and seeing what happens. That’s how The Robber and the Witness started. I knew I wanted a heroine who witnessed a crime and a hero charged with escorting his best friend's sister. The rest emerged as I wrote the story.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Danielle: About three weeks. I tend to write my Christmas Cabin novellas over the Christmas break because I’m fully in the Christmas mood and they’re so much fun.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Danielle: I loved chasing down the historic train maps, so the tracks I mention in the story are based on real-life ones from the 1930s. What I found most fascinating, however, was the train plows they used. Basically, these were like modern snow plows, but attached to steam train engines. They’d clear the tracks for the trains, but with the Soo Line (the line in The Daughter’s Goodbye) was often blocked due to blizzard conditions that left snow on large segments of track.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from The Robber and the Witness?

Danielle: Evan fully believed that she was too trusting, that she was too kind. And yet, Evangeline couldn’t understand why that was such a bad thing. Yes, her brother constantly worried about her safety, but didn’t Jesus ask them to be kind? Wasn’t she supposed to help those in need?

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Danielle: I’ve wanted to be an author for a long, long time. Perhaps better said, I’ve loved story since before I can remember and wrote my first short story at the age of eight.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Danielle: One of my favorite Christmas songs is Carol of the Bells, and I’m particularly fond of the version performed by the Trans Siberian Orchestra, called “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24

Q: Are you a fan of the "Christmas in July" concept?

Danielle: Oh yes! This is my third year in a row releasing a Christmas novella during Christmas in July. I love it!

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Danielle: I love romantic mysteries, whether contemporary or historical.

Q: What are you currently reading?

Danielle: I just finished a beta read of Amazed, the third book in Roseanna M. White’s romantasy series, Awakened.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Danielle: Autumn is my favorite season. I just wish it was about two weeks longer so it includes Christmastide!

Book Excerpt

If Sadie didn’t survive the night, would her parents and sisters ever learn what happened to her?

A shudder of fear shook her cold body. Kellan was the only person who knew she was on this boat. She wasn’t on a crew list or passenger list. No one had seen her board. For all Mrs. Whistshire knew, Sadie had caught a train to Milwaukee. Only, there would be no record of that either.

If Sadie died, her family never would have closure.

She planted her feet. Well, she’d just make sure that never happened. As if she had a say in the hour of her death. Lord, please?

A deafening crack rent the darkness. She jumped out of the Packard, peering through the inkiness for the cause. Was the ship tearing apart?

Water soaked her shoes and pant legs. She held onto the automobile as the ship listed to one side, nearly sending her tumbling. Were they tipping over?

Fear pounded her ribs.

She couldn’t stay in the hold one more minute. Who knew if Kellan was still alive or whether he’d be able to rescue her if she were trapped in this dark cavern?

She needed to go above deck. Even if the crew saw her, she needed to see what was going on.

Icy water fought her, pouring down from the hatches and rapidly rising around her ankles. No, her knees. Shivering, she forced herself to keep moving, to find her way through to the top deck. Light from the hallways—or whatever they were called aboard a boat—helped her navigate. It also illuminated the amount of water that had filled the ship. There was no way they couldn’t sink. Not with this much water. Right?

Please, please save us, she prayed.

Then the lights went out.

“Give that to me.” Mr. Cook snagged the receiver out of her hands. “Who is this?”

Gabriella covered her burning face with her hands, her mortification complete. Andri already thought of her as a younger sister, a girl, not a woman. But he was the only one she trusted not to get the wrong idea.

“Who I am is none of your concern.” Andri’s bass voice crackled through the earpiece loud enough for Gabriella to hear the deadly edge to his words.

“Not until you confirm how long Gabriella’s been your girl,” Mr. Cook demanded.

Gabriella pressed into the wall, tears stinging her eyes. She’d wanted to be Andri’s girl for as long as she could remember. Once upon a time she had never felt shy or ill-at-ease around him. That changed seven years ago, and tonight would only make it worse. Why had she thought this was a good idea?

“I don’t believe you’re her boyfriend.” Mr. Cook grinned at her like a cat toying with a bird. Or was it the mouse who got the cheese?

Andri’s voice rumbled through the phone, but Gabriella heard no distinct words. Then Mr. Cook’s smile faded, and, without a word, he tossed Gabriella the earpiece like a hot coal. With words unfit for a gentleman scorching the air, he stormed off.

“What did you say to him?” Gabriella whispered into the phone. “He hightailed it out of here like he was about to lose half his millions.”

“That just confirms he’s no good.” Andri’s exasperated sigh was one she’d heard directed at her all her life. “Now, what’s going on, Gabby? Do I need to come down there? Do you need me to come get you?”

She wanted to say yes, but he only asked because he saw her as a helpless little sister. Anyway, he was three hundred miles away. “I’ll be fine. You can stand down. I don’t need a policeman.”

“Gabriella—”

“I’m fine, Andri.” She swallowed back the emotion clogging her voice. “Thank you.”

She bid him goodbye and hung up the receiver. If only she could hang up her childhood feelings toward him as easily.

Book Excerpt

The man tapped the butter dish with the flat of his knife. “I didn’t say it was bad butter, miss. I said it was not butter. I have a finely tuned palate, miss. This is oleomargarine.”

Sam’s stomach twisted. This man had to be mistaken. Margarine was outlawed from being served in restaurants, but margarine that had been turned yellow to look like butter? That was a serious offence here in Wisconsin. One that could result in jail time for Frau Becker, or maybe even Sam, since she was the one who’d served it. She didn’t know how these things worked, nor did she know what to do.

The man smiled, easing her tension. “I doubt you knew, miss. I do not blame you. Might you, though, bring me the real thing?”

Tears pricked Sam’s eyes as she nodded and accepted the dish from him. “Th-thank you, sir.”

She set a controlled pace back to the kitchen. Should she tell Frau Becker? No. Not without proof. Proof whether this indeed was a forgery—she swiped a finger in it and tasted it, her stomach falling. Okay, so it was yellow oleomargarine. But without proof of who switched real butter with this fake stuff, she wouldn’t say a word.

She would, however, keep her eyes open. If the police caught wind that Das Teehaus Café served contraband, Sam might lose her job, and she didn’t want to go back to Crow’s Nest. She wanted to be an independent woman, like Frau Becker, and going to jail over margarine wasn’t in her plan.

Book Excerpt

Benjamin Ford stood atop a hill cloaked in a mist that hid him from God Himself and his fellow man. Head bowed under the weight of his sins, they pressed on his broad shoulders. But he would carry them if it meant an innocent would live.

The cool dampness swirled around him. The lapping of Loch Ness below created an otherworldly sense. There was life beyond the veil. Today, he didn’t want to acknowledge it. Perhaps because yesterday, he’d taken a thirty-fourth life. The exact number of years he’d lived on this earth.

Or maybe because today heralded the sixteenth anniversary of the first time he killed a man.

What absolution could there be for a man with so much bloodshed on his hands? He opened them now, his sleeves rolled to his elbows, revealing the tattoos gained from his time in the US Navy. Droplets formed on weather-worn skin, the mist heavy with water. It couldn’t wash away the darkness that threatened to crush his soul.

“Herr Ford?” a tiny voice preceded the equally tiny child.

“Yes, Amalie?” Benjamin switched to German before kneeling before the brave little orphan girl he’d smuggled out of Germany last night. Her blond hair hung limp about her pale face. “Are you ready to see Miss Blair? She’ll have tea and biscuits.”

“Will I like my new home?” Her blue eyes shimmered. The poor girl had lost so much in a few short hours, stolen by men who thought her Jewish blood made her less than they. “I don’t want to leave you.”

“Oh, wee one.” His voice roughened as she slipped into his embrace. He had promised her father, his friend, that he would do all in his power to protect the man’s only child. But she deserved more than the damaged soul of the likes of him.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write The Recluse’s Vindication?

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Danielle: Not all that long, honestly. The story came together in a way I didn’t expect. In essence, it flowed along and I simply had to keep up. Not all books are like this, but this one was.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Danielle: That the first newsprint published sighting of Nessie occurred in the very year I planned to set my story. The connection proved the lynch pin for the entire book.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from The Recluse’s Vindication?

Danielle: "He would accept the mantle God laid on him and trade his soul so the innocent could live."

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Danielle: I don’t like coffee though I’ve tried to like it in all sorts of ways. However, I figured if I couldn’t find a coffee I liked in Italy, there was no hope. I mean … not even tiramisu trained my tastebuds!

Q: What are you currently reading?

Danielle: The Collector of Burned Books by Roseanna M. White

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Danielle: Historical romance, especially if it has intrigue.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Twelve days. Twelve gifts. One unlikely hero.

Wisconsin, 1930—When Manitowish Waters librarian Olivia “Ollie” Larson finds a package on the library steps, she expects the children’s books she ordered, not a taxidermied partridge. By the fourth gift from her unknown and unwelcome True Love, disappearing to her grandfather’s isolated cabin in the Northwoods is the only way she can escape him.

Deputy Titus Wilburn is happy to escort the lovely librarian to her grandfather’s house on his way to the neighboring Yarwood cabin. After all, he’s been smitten with her since they attended school together, and she needs his protection. However, the plan fails when Ollie’s uninvited suitor discovers her new location.

As the man’s actions become more desperate and his gifts more dangerous, an unexpectedly bedridden Titus decides to free Ollie from this menace, which puts the enemy’s sights directly on him. Ollie refuses to let her injured hero sacrifice himself, but with the days ticking closer to Christmas, she may have no choice but to accept whatever fate her suitor has in store for her if she wants to save Titus’ life.

“Keep an eye on her.” Casper pointed his chin at the box as he shrugged into his coat. “My gut says that package was meant for Ollie. We need to find out why.”

Titus agreed.

“Maybe she’ll finally talk to you.” Casper grinned, then winked. “Being loved by a good woman makes life worth living.”

“Yeah, yeah. Tell Eira Mae hello for me.” Titus shook his head as his boss left. He was happy for his friend. Honestly, he was. But Casper’s tease hit too close to home. Titus wanted a girl like Casper had found in Eira Mae, and only one had ever fit the picture in his mind.

Titus scrounged up a stack of old newspaper and carefully lifted the bird from the package to prepare it for its ceremony. He hoped this would allow Ollie to lay the trauma to rest just as much as the bird. She had such a quiet, gentle, sensitive soul.

As he settled the bird on the newsprint, a piece of paper fluttered to the ground beside his boot. He lifted it by the corner so as not to smudge the writing, and any question that the package had anything to do with the library vanished.

To my true love: please accept this gift of provision.

Titus turned cold. Ollie had a secret admirer.

Wisconsin, 1931—Buck Wilson refuses to accept failure as his reward for all he has sacrificed, but he’s kept secrets for too long to be believed. With his freedom on the line, there’s only one person he trusts to mine for the true story: the woman he left one month before their wedding.

All investigative journalist Caroline Wagoneer wants is to shine a light on the truth wherever darkness threatens to obscure it. Which is the only reason she agrees to help her ex-fiance when he begs for her to go undercover in Crow’s Nest. What she discovers paints Buck in a whole new light.

With lies and rumor hemming them in, Buck and Caroline realize their love may be doomed on the altar of altruism.

Unless love can truly conquer all.

Welcome to Crow’s Nest, where danger and romance meet at the water’s edge.

“Caroline.” Her name on his lips emerged broken, just like him.

A variety of emotions danced across her round features before she shuttered them away. She was not overly tall, but neither was she short. Indeed, diminutive she was not. Dressed in her typical white blouse and black skirt, a tie at her throat, and a black eyebrow cocked, she looked like the warrior he knew her to be. Her dark hair was exactly as he remembered, pinned up with combs to soften the bob. She shifted. With one hand, she held the door open, but she relaxed a hip, resting her other hand on it as it jutted out in her signature stance. Still, not a word left her unsmiling mouth.

He’d rehearsed this moment in his mind since they left Crow’s Nest. No, ever since he’d made this ridiculous plan with Detective O’Connor, his nemesis-turned-partner. Though if this didn’t work, the man beside him might have to arrest him, as he had surely dreamed of doing the last few years. Buck could picture the older man’s bushy mustache twitching in glee as he secured Buck’s wrists in cuffs.

“Did you have something to say?” Carrie spoke firmly, neutrally, showing the skills that made him first admire her. Her gaze took in his companion but focused on him. “Or are you going to stand here in a daze until supper?”

“I need your help.” Dunderhead. Those were not the first words he’d planned. Beside him, O’Connor sighed.

The index finger of Carrie’s right hand bounced against her belt, the only sign he’d caught her off guard. “The girls think I should slam the door in your face.”

“I deserve it.”

She huffed and threw the door closed.

“Your eloquence leaves something to be desired,” O’Connor growled.

Buck cringed. But before his brain engaged, Carrie flung it open again. “Get your posteriore in here, Wilson. And shut the door.” She spun on her heels, leaving him gaping on her front step and O’Connor laughing like a crazy old man.

Caroline Wagoneer had used those exact words the first day they met over six years ago.
