Book Review: Of Flaw and Scorn by Vera Bell

About the Book:

Irish coast, 795 A.D. Caught between two clashing worlds, a Christian slave and a Viking raider must crush their forbidden love before it imperils her faith and destroys his claim to the jarl’s seat—but God’s plan is greater than either can imagine.

While gathering wild strawberries near her fishing village, thirteen-year-old Brigit stumbles into the path of a young Viking warrior, Reidar. A night terror come alive, the heathen boy is part of a Norse horde descended on Ireland beneath the cover of night. Eager for conquest and glory on his first raid, Reidar takes Brigit captive. But when her terror stirs an overwhelming compassion, he defies his father and saves her from his own people as they raze her village. This unexpected act of mercy sears Brigit’s memory into his soul and becomes his Great Flaw.

Seven years later, the Vikings storm the Irish keep where Brigit is trapped in a loveless marriage. Amid the raid, their young warlord sets his sights on Brigit. Her faith, once her anchor, has withered under years of loss and hardship, and her Great Scorn for Norsemen and all who wronged her has become her only armor. Yet her defenses crumble as she wrestles with a dangerous attraction to her enemy. Bound to her captor’s will and surrounded by savagery, Brigit fights to preserve her dignity and fading faith as she clings to the memory of the boy who once spared her. But the man Reidar has become a hardened warrior, sworn to vengeance and shackled by blood feud.

Both are doomed to ruin unless they open their hearts to the one power greater than the Flaw and Scorn that bind them.

My Thoughts:

Every time I had to put aside Of Flaw and Scorn by Vera Bell, it hurt. This novel held my attention from the beginning with its smartly paced plot and the romantic tension between Brigit and Reidar. The love story leaned heavily into the enemies-to-lovers and love/hate romance tropes. These are not my favorite tropes, but the author showed the characters’ motivations, backstories, rationales, and emotions so well that I thoroughly enjoyed the friction created by these tropes.

Regarding the characters in Of Flaw and Scorn, Brigit and Reidar were both likeable as was their evolving relationship. I was more sympathetic to Brigit, whose experiences had made her jaded and cynical, than to Reidar, who had his own regrets and pain. I strongly disliked some of the customs Reidar participated in and some actions of his own choosing. Still, the author crafted Reidar in such a way that he was engaging and not without hope of redemption. For Brigit, it was a joy to see her travel the road of healing and love. I appreciated that her character presented a strong gospel message about the love and forgiveness of Jesus.

Of Flaw and Scorn has been billed as akin to Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, but I found it to be more like Rivers’ book, As Sure as the Dawn. Indeed, readers that enjoyed the latter book will likely enjoy Of Flaw and Scorn. I know I did. Of Flaw and Scorn is the first installment in Vera Bell’s Gracefire series. I’m looking forward to book two. 4.5 stars!

Book Review: The Belle of Chatham by Laura Frantz

About the Book:

The call for liberty creates a divide between family and country, desire and duty, love and loyalty.

In 1777, caught in the crossroads of the American Revolution, sisters Maebel and Coralie Bohannon's quaint New Jersey village becomes a battleground as they house American officers. Rebellion ripples through their family as members take opposing sides--Patriots and Loyalists--causing a deep chasm that fractures their once-unbreakable bond.

As Mae's friendship grows with the American general Rhys Harlow, Coralie continues her liaison with her childhood sweetheart, a British officer stationed in New York. Mae, torn between her deepening love for the general and suspicion that her sister is a British spy, leaves the only home she's ever known for the New York frontier. When betrayal strikes in the heart of the wilderness, she's forced to take a perilous journey that tests her very survival and those she loves, all in the name of liberty.

On the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Laura Frantz offers a stirring friends-to-lovers historical romance of divided loyalties, patriotism, sacrifice, sisterhood, and love set during the American Revolution.

My Thoughts:

The Belle of Chatham by Laura Frantz highlighted the Patriot struggle in America’s War for Independence which made it an appropriate read as the United States celebrates its 250th year in 2026. The plight of the characters, though fictional, reflected what people of that time may have experienced: financial loss, death of loved ones, physical injuries, families torn apart, and other war-related trauma. The Belle of Chatham included those realities without feeling too dark and heavy. This story reminded me of the bravery, stoutheartedness, and devotion the Patriots held to freedom, though I wished that same freedom had been extended to all genders and races in the new nation. Each chapter began with a quote from a historical figure which I enjoyed reading.

The Belle of Chatham held more romance than some of Laura Frantz’s other novels. I loved the tension and swoony moments between Mae and Rhys, but their relationship went deeper than attraction and chemistry to a union of hearts and ideals. Sadly, the book’s ending wrapped up hurriedly, and I wished that season of their relationship had been fleshed out more.

The Belle of Chatham by Laura Frantz also touched on the price of elevating political beliefs over personal relationships, the beautiful and not-so-beautiful sides of sisterhood, and the importance of living honestly. This standalone novel provided plenty of romance, history, and intrigue that held my attention. 4.5 Stars!

Book Excerpt

Peter never intended to marry. And he certainly never intended to marry like this. He stood rigidly, at perfect attention. But the way his hands fisted and his heart pounded as if he was running from enemy fire revealed that this wedding day was anything but normal. His back was framed by the large windows in the Heathridge Chapel. Light streamed around him, painting the stone floor and wooden benches in radiant colors. The vibrancy almost made him feel as if he were back in Spain. But before Peter could appreciate the beauty of the moment, the red light filtering through the stained glass looked a little too physical, like a seeping, staining pool of blood. And it certainly did not help that hew as wearing his finest uniform, freshly starched and gleaming in shades of scarlet and cream. The very sensation of the fabric took him back to the battlefield in an instant, try as he might to avoid it.

Not now, soldier. It's Ana's wedding day as well. This is not about you.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write A Siege on Her Heart?

A Siege on Her Heart was born when I decided I wanted to use my Spanish and write about a Spanish FMC in the Regency Era. So I did a quick Google search and discovered the siege and sacking of San Sebastian. I was writing a different book (still unpublished) at the time but I couldn’t get this tragic and horrific event out of my mind. It took almost a year, but once I started drafting it, the story flowed out of me. During that year, I had my first child and experienced a really difficult birth and postpartum anxiety/depression. Those months opened my eyes to the raw periods of transition and learning that mothers experience. I knew that it was historically accurate that my female main character, Ana, would experience an assault, as so many women did in the siege of San Sebastian. So I wanted to lean into the difficult journey she had by adding in the layer of PTSD and postpartum healing.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

It took me six months to write A Siege on Her Heart, plus a few more months of editing.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

I was really surprised by the historical events of the siege of San Sebastian. I had never even heard of the Peninsular War, much less the sacking of this city. Sadly enough, this was not the only city that was sacked during this conflict between France and the allied forces of the British and Portuguese armies, but due to the burning of the city and the many deaths, it is considered one of the worst examples of indiscipline in British army history. There are journal entries from the soldiers involved in these horrors that show that they were forever altered by the things they saw there. And to think that an ocean away, ladies and gentlemen were taking a turn about the ballroom, blissfully oblivious.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from A Siege on Her Heart?

I chose two :)

“Yes, he was startled to discover that he most thoroughly enjoyed kissing his wife. This would be a new weakness of his, it would seem.”

“Peter understood her heart and her soul in a manner so healing that she would never be able to put it to words.”

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

When I was in sixth grade, I had an assignment to do a book report on a historical fiction novel. I wrote nearly double the assigned pages and made an artsy “weathered” cover for it. Apparently my report was creative enough that my kind sixth grade teacher approached me and told me that I should be an author someday. Throughout junior high and high school, I started many “books” which thankfully will never see the light of day. I loved my AP English Lit and Language classes. During my second year of college, I took a creative writing class that ignited that love of writing in me again. I instantly changed my major to English Lit/Creative Writing.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

I love to sing! I had a minor in music during college and grew up participating in orchestra, theater, and choir.

Q: What are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading the excellent series, The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion by Beth Brower. I can’t get enough of them!

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

I love to read historical fiction but I also love fantasy. I’ve been a Brandon Sanderson fan since I was in junior high!

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

I love to bake, make crafts, and go on walks.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

I love fall. The weather cools down and humidity eases up. The flavors and scents are delicious and harvest-inspired. The trees are beautiful, especially in the mountains. I love going on daily walks with my kids during the fall. We spent countless hours at the playground this most recent fall!

Book Review: A Fierce Devotion by Laura Frantz

 About the Book:

Exiled from his native Acadie in Canada, Bleu Galant has little on his mind but survival as the tumultuous French and Indian War comes to a close. When his journey to Virginia’s Rivanna River settlement takes an unexpected turn, he crosses paths with Brielle Farrow—a woman whose presence stirs something in him he cannot explain nor express. Unable to forget her, his decision to help her takes them across an ocean and into a lavish world he’s never known. Will their intricate tie decide not only her fate but his future?

My Thoughts:

Bleu Galant, originally of The Seamstress of Acadie by Laura Frantz, returned for his own story of danger, romance, and family ties in A Fierce Devotion. Though this novella hosted characters from The Seamstress of Acadie, it read fine as a standalone. Frantz’s writing was beautiful, but the pace of the story varied with some sections feeling a tad slow. I especially liked the addition of French words and phrases.

Bleu and Brielle were well-suited for each other and the title, A Fierce Devotion, aptly described their relationship. I loved that Bleu was kind and generous from the start. No wonder Brielle found him attractive! From there, the relationship took a slow burn romance path. The would-be couple had chemistry and flirtation, but it took them a long time to move forward on their deeper feelings. Their development was less about fundamental changes than overcoming adversity, questions of self-worth, and the journey of their lives.

Fans of Laura Frantz and The Seamstress of Acadie will likely enjoy this historical romance novella. 3.5 Stars.

Book Review: The Collector of Burned Books by Roseanna M. White

About the Book:

Paris, 1940. Ever since the Nazi Party began burning books, German writers exiled for their opinions or heritage have been taking up residence in Paris. There they opened a library meant to celebrate the freedom of ideas and gathered every book on the banned list . . . and even incognito versions of the forbidden books that were smuggled back into Germany.

For the last six years, Corinne Bastien has been reading those books and making that library a second home. But when the German army takes possession of Paris, she loses access to the library and all the secrets she’d hidden there. Secrets the Allies will need if they have any hope of liberating the city she calls home.

Christian Bauer may be German, but he never wanted anything to do with the Nazi Party―he is a professor, one who’s done his best to protect his family as well as the books that were a threat to Nazi ideals. But when Goebbels sends him to Paris to handle the “relocation” of France’s libraries, he’s forced into an army uniform and given a rank he doesn’t want. In Paris, he tries to protect whoever and whatever he can from the madness of the Party and preserve the ideas that Germans will need again when that madness is over, and maybe find a lost piece of his heart.

My Thoughts:

The Collector of Burned Books by Roseanna M. White captured my attention with its haunting prologue. The strong opening set the stage for this potent story of truth, tension, literature, and hardship. I marked many quotes and found inspiration in the way that Corinne and Christian drew strength from their faith in God. It was a pleasure to watch their relationship evolve from strangers divided by nationality and war to a strong couple united in honesty and heart.

The Collector of Burned Books isn’t shy about its themes: the power of words, the correlation between banning books and the stripping of freedom, the necessity of reading widely, allowance for other viewpoints, and respect for those we disagree with. Whether stated outright by characters or woven into the plot, these ideas flowed from beginning to end of the story. Given our current social and political climate, these themes made the novel feel timely and important.

While The Collector of Burned Books by Roseanna M. White felt like a love letter to books, reading, and literature, it was not an easy read. The horrid realities of Nazi occupation were present: the terrible treatment of anyone considered “less than”, the warped ideology that people swallowed, the deception and lies, the culture of fear and mistrust. The author portrayed these elements realistically and, during heavier parts of the story, I could only read two or three chapters in a day.

The Collector of Burned Books is a book that simultaneously captivates with its characters while pushing readers to think about the connection between literature and freedom. I recommend this novel to those who enjoy WW2 historical fiction. Five stars for this sobering, timely, well-written story.

Book Review: The Lawyer and the Laundress by Christine Hill Suntz

About the Book:

Lawyer James Kinney isn’t looking for love, and laundress Sara O’Connor doesn’t want to be found. When their paths cross in a British colony on the brink of rebellion, a marriage of convenience may be their best hope of survival.

Canada, 1837. Widower James Kinney knows his precocious daughter, Evie, needs more than his lessons on law and logic, but Toronto offers few options. Classes with the neighbor children seem ideal until James discovers Evie is secretly spending her time with Sara O’Connor, a kind and mysteriously educated servant. For propriety’s sake, James forbids their friendship. But then Evie falls victim to the illness ravaging the city, and James must call upon Sara’s medical knowledge and her special bond with Evie to save his daughter’s life.

When Sara’s presence in his household threatens scandal, however, James offers an unexpected solution: become his wife, in name only, and help him raise Evie to be a proper young lady.

If Sara can ignore the sparks she feels when they’re together, his logical proposal could keep her secret secure forever. But soon, the forces of rebellion unravel their tidy arrangement. When James is accused of treason, Sara must find the courage to face a past that could save her husband’s life.

My Thoughts:

When I finished reading The Lawyer and the Laundress by Christine Hill Suntz, I found myself wishing that Sara, James, and Evie were real people. These characters came alive amid the turmoil of the 1837 Canada Rebellion, a historical event I was unfamiliar with. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this beautiful story of finding (and refinding) love and family.

My favorite theme in The Lawyer and the Laundress was how God is with us in the hard times, even when he chooses not to rescue from pain and suffering. Sara’s past experiences reflected this and in her present circumstances God felt absent. One quote by Granny stayed with me: “God isn’t only a God of blessings. He’s the Man of Sorrows, too, ye ken. He knows how it feels.” I’m thankful that’s true.

The Lawyer and the Laundress included several other elements I enjoyed. The romance between James and Sara held swoony moments, tension as the relationship evolved, and a bit of mystery due to Sara’s hidden identity. The secondary characters truly enhanced the story and kept the plot moving along. The social structures of the day added adversity for Sara and James to overcome.

I recommend The Lawyer and the Laundress by Christine Hill Suntz to readers who enjoy historical fiction with tension, secrets, and romance. Five Stars!

Book Review: Of Silver and Secrets by Michelle Griep

About the Book:

Buried underneath are truths bent on keeping them apart. . . .

In 1889 Victorian England, Eva Inman is haunted by guilt over her parents' deaths while struggling to care for her blind sister and manage her family's crumbling estate. With the tax deadline looming, Eva's situation looks dire until an ancient silver ring is unearthed on the property. Despite superstitions warning against disturbing the supposedly cursed acres, Eva's need for funds ignites her curiosity about the potential of finding more buried relics.

Cambridge professor Bram Webb must prove a legendary Christian Roman settlement exists, or he'll risk exposing his uncle's deteriorating memory and they'll both lose their positions. Then Eva steps into his office with the prospect of an archaeological dig that might lead to the very evidence Bram requires--provided he and Eva can set aside painful memories of a time they would rather forget. As the dig forces the two to confront their pasts, the work becomes fraught with challenges that threaten Eva's and Bram's hopes, as well as the growing attraction between them.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed reading Of Silver and Secrets by Michelle Griep. The story held my attention from the start as I rooted for Bram and Eva, who were underdogs in their own particular circumstances. Having that in common, as well as shared childhood experiences, these characters had a strong (albeit complicated) connection from the start. Their slow burn romance grew alongside their journeys to overcoming long-held false beliefs and dealing with the external challenges of life. It was a pleasure to see them start to walk in freedom together and how that freedom enabled them to love others well.

Of Silver and Secrets concludes the Time’s Lost Treasures duology by Michelle Griep. I loved book one (Of Gold and Shadows), so I recommend reading the series in order, but Of Silver and Secrets would be fine as a standalone. Recommended for fans of historical romance who enjoy relatable characters, a flowing plot, and a dose of mystery.

Excerpt

Levi’s eyes began to open to the familiar voice. He focused on a massive man hovering over him. It was Zeb.

As he tried to move his arm, he realized it was tied down to the bed. Panic seized him before Zeb put his hands on his shoulders.

“Levi, you’ve been real bad off. We tied you down to keep you from thrashing about and hurting yourself more. As soon as we know you’re back to yourself, we’ll untie you. You understand what I’m saying?”

Levi nodded weakly. “Water,” he choked out barely above a whisper.

A woman handed Zeb a cup of water, then helped raise Levi’s head enough for him to drink.

He never remembered anything tasting so good. His parched mouth and throat were like a sponge, soaking up every drop.

Nodding his head in thanks, he rested back again. “Zeb, untie me. I feel like a captured, wounded animal.” He still spoke barely above a whisper.

Zeb lowered his eyes. “Can’t. Not yet.”

Levi pulled against his restraints and his voice got a bit stronger. He glared at Zeb. “You can’t? What do you mean, you can’t? Untie me, Zeb.”

Zeb sat down beside the bed, looking sad and defeated. “Levi, you got yourself a real bad leg there. When you broke it, the bone came clear through your skin. We fixed the bone as best we could, and hope it will heal okay. But being a big man and all, you won’t be able to walk on it for a long time.”

Zeb sighed and looked at Levi. “But that’s not the worst of it. You had what Mitzi calls blood poisoning. She’s still putting her concoction on you for that.”

He shook his head and looked down again. “Some of the skin is beginning to not look so good and we’re just afeared that you may lose your leg.”

Levi stiffened against the restraints. “No!” he yelled. “Nobody’s going to take my leg!”

“Now see, that’s why we have you tied down. You’d be jumping around hurting yourself. But we sent for the doctor in town. Hopefully, he will be here tomorrow.

“I try to put myself in your shoes about this matter, and we done talked about it between the lot of us. If there’s a choice between your leg or your life, we’ve already decided, we aren’t going to let you die.”

Levi looked up at the ceiling, not even able to wipe away the tear that escaped his eye.

A woman walked up and instructed Zeb to help sit him up a bit. “I brought you some broth. You ought to be hungry by now.”

He looked at her, trying not to look so intimidating, but right now he was angry and in pain.

“You’re Mitzi? You’ve been taking care of me?”

“Yes. I’ve done most of the doctoring around here for nearly twenty years.”

“Thank you, ma’am, but the first chance I get to be out of this bed, I’ll be gone. I’ve got a woman in town waiting for me to marry her. I won’t let her down, even if I have to use crutches.”

“I know. I’ve heard. That’s why Zeb and a few other men are camped right outside. They help keep watch on you all day and night.

“Now, open your mouth and eat this broth.” She put a spoon to his mouth.

He wished he could resist, but he was hungry. The broth was good and he willingly ate every bite.

“How long have I been here?”

The woman moved away with the bowl and Zeb sat back down. He knew Levi would be upset when he found out he was already late getting back to town.

He cleared his throat. “Eight days since we found you.”

“No, Zeb, that just can’t be. I’m supposed to be getting married about now.”

He pulled against his restraints with all his strength. “Let me out of here!” He pulled and tugged with his teeth gritted. His eyes shot anger toward Zeb. “I’ve got to go. You can’t keep me like a prisoner.”

Zeb stood and shook his head. “One day you’ll see this is for your own good. Maybe you should spend some time talking to the Lord about all of this. None of us wished this on you, so we hope you don’t stay mad for long. But we will stay right by your side through it all.” He turned and left.

Levi rested back against the pillows. There was no sense in fighting. There was no way to win.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Levi’s Loyalty?

Lynne: I was invited to a group to write a story about a Mountain Man who had sent away for a Mail-Order Bride. During the research about Mountain Men, I fell in love with the rugged concept of how they lived…seclusion, survival, and how aware they were of their surroundings every moment. They were everything an adventurous me would have loved to be many, many years ago.

I didn’t even finish the Mail-Order Bride book before I started writing Levi’s story. I was captivated and couldn’t type fast enough. Once he made his way into my mind, he worked his way into my heart. I was almost ashamed for putting him through so much heartache, but I made sure he came out victorious in the end and so much better off because of the trials.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Lynne: It only took about three weeks to write it, but I tweaked and edited it for over a year, wanting it to be the best I had written so far.

Q:What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Lynne: I love research! I found myself getting lost in the past as vivid pictures made their way into my imagination while reading the true facts of what these men endured. Some of the most intriguing facts were about how secluded they chose to be. Most of my research was about men who never settled down in one place long enough to build more than a lean-to for shelter. But there were others, especially if they chose to have a wife and family, who would build a cabin, but still in a secluded area.

Some of these men, (and their families), never…yes, I said never, stepped foot in a town. The local trading post served multi purposes, including a place for the mountain folk to gather briefly during the spring and summer while they traded the pelts for necessities.

Although loyal to their own, and helpful when needed, they stayed to themselves unless called on for help. Levi’s Loyalty has a few scenes about the local trading post and some of its functions.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Levi’s Loyalty?

Lynne: Oh my! That is a tough one. I can’t even choose a favorite scene! This story is so touching, and explores every emotion. I almost have it memorized and still find myself sniffling and wiping tears during Chapters 5 and 13, and find myself grinning and chuckling during Chapters 6 – 8. So many other times I’m ready to bite nails from anger, or fingernails from nervous intensity…and I know how the story ends! LOL! The voice actor who did the audio (Spencer Dillehay), did an amazing job of making this story come to life.

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Lynne: As a child I loved to write and tried my hand at poetry and short stories, just for fun. In the late 1980’s, I knew writing was a passion of mine and wrote several pieces, especially for magazines and such. I also wrote poetry and stories, but at that time, to be published, you had to have an agent, who in turn would try to find a publisher to accept your work. With raising 5 kids at the time, there was no extra money for such a venture.

My husband was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2014, and I closed my Quilt Shop in 2015 to allow us to travel and spend our time together…that was when I knew I had to write. I had collected interviews over the years (on cassette tapes), and my grandmother’s life story was burning in me, so I had plenty of material to write about. That’s when I found out about self publishing on Amazon, and my life hasn’t been the same since.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Lynne: In my Amazon bio, it says readers agree that my books are so realistic, it sounds as if I had lived it myself…and a lot of it, I have. I am a firm believer that God allows us to go through things for a reason. One of those reasons, at least for me, is so I can be helpful to someone else going through the same thing. I do that through my writing. Even though I write historical, the principles and emotions are the same as they are today, and the life lessons can still be applied. When I write about devastation, heartache, and even abuse, I have been there and can vividly describe my feelings during those times. When I write about victory and joy, thankfully, I have been there also and share those emotions, giving God the glory for His kindness, mercy and grace. I am so wonderfully blessed.

Q: What are you currently reading?

Lynne: Edits! LOL! After days of writing, I take a break and read just for pleasure. I attack my TBR list for a solid week after I finish a work in progress. Right now, I am reading “A Son to Protect” by Joi Copeland.

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Lynne: Historical Romance and Historical non-fiction.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Lynne: Oh, my goodness…whatever craft I am passionate about at the time! I have done a bit of all kinds, including (but not limited to Bob Ross style painting, macrame, crochet, quilting, and the list goes on!) Right now, I am pouring and painting plaster and making some wonderful scented soaps that smell so good I want to take a bite out of them! What a way to wash your mouth out with soap! LOL!

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Lynne: Fall with Spring being a close second. Spring is great with colorful blooms, warmer weather, and life seeming to renew itself. But Fall, especially since I live in the South with mild winters and scorching summers with high humidity, is a blessed relief from the heat. I enjoy the gorgeous, vibrant colors of leaves, the smell of campfires and grills outside, while aromas of cinnamon, pumpkin spice, cloves and sage fill the house. The insects are gone and so is most of the pollen.

Excerpt

From Chapter 11, Scene 2:

As new arrivals entered the box, Mrs. Dixon excused herself. Ivy and Zella found two seats in the front row by the balcony. Ivy leaned forward, peering through the railing at the crowd below as patrons found their seats. A petite woman wore an enormous hat resembling a nest with a decorative sparrow perched on top. Ivy stifled a giggle, wanting to point out the absurd millinery to her aunt when she caught sight of a tall man in the passageway outside the dimly lit enclosure.

Her breath caught in her chest.

It was him—unmistakably him—with that air of confidence and elegance wrapped in perfectly fitting evening wear.

Although she hadn’t seen him in several weeks and figured she never would again, the swirl of emotions was undeniable. Her hands, still gripping the balcony railing, grew clammy inside her gloves. And her heart betrayed her resolve to forget William Walraven.

Book Review: Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen

About the Book:

One final cry of terror, and suddenly her world shifted violently, until a blinding collision scattered her mind and shook her bones. Then, the pain. The freezing water. And as all sensation drifted away, a hand reached for hers before all faded into darkness. . . .

In the midst of a fierce storm, a carriage carrying Sir John Mayfield, Lady Marianna Mayfield, and her lady's companion careens off a narrow cliff road, changing their fates forever. When the wreckage is found, Sir John is gravely injured, and a woman is discovered unconscious wearing a valuable ring. As the woman regains consciousness in a strange house, she grapples with fragmented memories of the accident, unsettling dreams of a child in peril, and a deep mystery tied to the ring on her finger. Surrounded by unfamiliar faces and haunted by a sense of foreboding, the survivor realizes she cannot trust anyone and must uncover the truth of what happened that stormy night, even as danger mounts and enemies conspire against her.

In this revised and updated 10th anniversary edition of Julie Klassen's acclaimed novel, a woman's startling secrets lead her into unexpected danger and romance in Regency England.

My Thoughts:

Lady Maybe held a different flavor than Julie Klassen’s other Christian Fiction novels. First of all, the book was hard-to-put-down. For me, Klassen’s novels are generally calm and sweet historical romances that I find enjoyable and relaxing. However, Lady Maybe kept me on my toes with its mystery and made me want to stay up all night with its romance. Intrigue hovered for most of the book while other plot points (injury recovery, searching for a child, secrets, etc.) constantly moved the story forward. I read the novel in two long sittings because I wanted to know how things would turn out for Sir John, Lady Marianna, and Hannah.

Lady Maybe also carried a more sensual romance than normally found in Klassen’s novels. Including a fade-to-black bedroom scene was an edgy choice for a novel that held clearly Christian elements as it openly addressed repentance, forgiveness, and the need for Christ. I did enjoy the romantic tension between Hannah and Sir John, though I think the story could have stood quite well, perhaps even better, without the love triangle that grew throughout the novel.

Lady Maybe by Julie Klassen was highly enjoyable to read, so much so that it has a permanent home on my bookshelf. Four stars!

Excerpt

Morning Fawn’s head pounded. She had to get away. From the past. From everything.

Stumbling on a root, she bent down and yanked the deplorable shoes off of her feet. Ahead, Mr. Franklin’s chestnut Thoroughbred nibbled on grass, no owner in sight. She’d heard rumors it could beat any horse in the county.

A thought sizzled through her. Freedom. She broke into a run, her skirt flapping against her legs. Pebbles dug into her stocking feet. No walls. No people. Escape. She yanked the lead rope from the rail and grabbed the reins.

The horse snorted as she latched on to the pommel, stuck a foot in the stirrup, and heaved herself onto the saddle.

“Miss Logan—” A man came around the corner.

Morning Fawn snapped the reins and pressed her calves to the horse’s side. The chestnut quickened from a trot to a lope past the weathered fence and down the hill. Horse hooves tore through dried grass and onto the packed-dirt road.

Wind whipped the hat from her head, and her hair unfurled as they galloped past stubby brown picked-over fields, empty of cotton. The blood red faded, along with the screams.

Someone yelled behind her in the distance.

No. She would not, could not stop. She’d never get free. If they caught her, they’d lock her up.

Book Review: An Honorable Deception by Roseanna M. White

About the Book:

In the trying art of balancing investigations and love, a detective must determine his priorities when faced with dangerous circumstances that could threaten everything he holds dear.

As the leader of the Imposters, an elite private investigative firm, Lord Yates Fairfax has made an art of concealing his identity. But when his newest client, the beautiful Lady Alethia Barremore, is shot while leaving their meeting, he throws caution to the wind and rushes to her aid. Though Lady Alethia thought she was only looking for her missing former nanny, she has clearly stumbled upon something much more dangerous.

Lady Lavinia Hemming suspects her longtime friends hold more secrets than they're willing to admit, and when she stumbles upon the truth that they're the esteemed Imposters, she recruits herself into the firm. While she is happy for the distraction of an investigation, Lavinia's own family secrets continue to haunt her. And the one thing bringing laughter back into her life--her friendship with Yates--lands her squarely on the disagreeable side of her best friend: his sister.

Tormented by a past she doesn't dare voice aloud, Lady Alethia does what she can to help her handsome host, her new friends, and the investigators. But as clues lead them deeper into the dark side of society, Alethia, Yates, and Lavinia learn anew that the gentry isn't always noble . . . even as they fight to hold fast to their own honor.

Read an excerpt from An Honorable Deception on the publisher's website.

My Thoughts:

An Honorable Deception by Roseanna M. White is not the typical historical romance set in England. With a brilliantly concocted cast of characters and the peculiarity of circus animals on an ancestral estate, the novel held a unique and fresh feel. The fierce determination of the characters made the story’s events move steadily forward and prevented the plot from slowing as it tackled heavy topics (prolonged illness, parental neglect, sexual assault, etc). I appreciated the character development and the spiritual growth of the main characters.

When I realized that An Honorable Deception included a love triangle, I questioned if I would enjoy the novel. In a rare move, I flipped to the back of the book to see which woman Yates ended up with. Happily, it was the one I preferred for him. I continued reading and found that the love triangle was relatively mild as it lacked nastiness and true heartbreak.

An Honorable Deception concludes The Imposters series by Roseanna M. White. I recommend reading the series in order as it includes characters from the previous novels. Recommended for fans of historical fiction who enjoy stories with suspense, depth, and romance.

Book Review: When Stars Light the Sky by Elizabeth Camden

About the Book:

In a world on the brink of war, two hearts must navigate shadows of uncertainty.

Inga Klein's carefree life in New York takes a dramatic turn when she sails for Berlin, Germany, to serve as the secretary for America's ambassador. Amid the glamour of life at the embassy, she continually finds herself at odds with the straitlaced and imposing Benedict Kincaid, the diplomatic chief of staff who harbors deep misgivings toward the German-born Inga.

As Europe hurtles toward World War I, Benedict's determination to keep America out of the conflict adds to the already tense atmosphere. Despite their relentless sparring, Inga and Benedict succeed in keeping the embassy afloat through one crisis after another. But when they run out of diplomatic options, a marriage of convenience may be Inga's only hope of escape from the impending war.

My Thoughts:

When Stars Light the Sky by Elizabeth Camden transported me back to Germany at the start of World War I. This well-written novel held lots of historical details and provided a unique perspective of that time. The serious subject matter anchored the plot, but the story was not overly dark due to the characters being mostly safe as workers at the US Embassy. I appreciated how the novel brought this difficult period to life without drowning me in sadness.

Although I enjoyed the setting, plot events, and historical details, the romance elevated When Stars Light the Sky to a five star read for me. Camden deftly weaved together at least three romantic tropes (grumpy/sunshine personalities, enemies-to-lovers, and marriage of convenience). These elements provided rich soil for character growth and for the romantic tension between Inga and Benedict. Their initial difficulties made the development and fruition of their relationship especially satisfying. Plus, I adored the ending.

When Stars Light the Sky lands as book two in the Women of Midtown series by Elizabeth Camden, but the novel works well as a standalone. Characters from book one feature briefly, but the setting and atmosphere of the two stories are very different. There is a light faith element that will appeal to Christian readers. Five stars for this all-around lovely novel!

Book Review: The Indigo Heiress by Laura Frantz

About the Book:

In 1774, Juliet Catesby lives with her father and sister at Royal Vale, the James River plantation founded by her Virginia family over a century before. Indigo cultivation is her foremost concern, though its export tethers her family to the powerful Buchanan clan of Glasgow, Scotland. When the heir of the Buchanan firm arrives on their shores, Juliet discovers that her father has secretly arranged for one of his daughters to marry the Scot as a means of canceling the family's debt. Confident it will be her younger, lovelier sister, Juliet is appalled when Leith Buchanan selects her instead.

Despite her initial refusal of him, an ensuing altercation forces Juliet to flee Virginia. Agreeing to marry, she sails with Leith to Scotland, hopeful of a better match for her sister, who accompanies her. But once in Glasgow and faced with the contentious, powerful Buchanan clan, she realizes that the man who saved her from financial ruin and scandal is the very one she must now save in return.

Read an excerpt from The Indigo Heiress on the publisher's website.

My Thoughts:

I devoured The Indigo Heiress by Laura Frantz. This story hooked my attention from the start, and I didn’t want to put the book down. Frantz crafted beautifully authentic characters in Juliet and Leith. Then, she tied them together in a romance that I adored. Their romantic tension shifted a bit once the couple arrived in Scotland and settled into a daily routine, but I rooted for them until the end.

Other story elements I liked in The Indigo Heiress included the sibling relationship between Juliet and Loveday, Leith’s turn to God (which felt genuine, not too fast or convenient), and a plot twist I didn’t see coming (which I can’t expound on without giving spoilers). I expected the indigo plants to feature more in the story, but I enjoyed what I did learn about the plants.

The Indigo Heiress by Laura Frantz was my first five star read of 2025. I recommend this beautiful novel to Christian readers who enjoy stories rich in romance and history. The story has lingered in my mind, and I could happily reread it now.

Book Review: The Queen's Cook by Tessa Afshar

About the Book:

In the heart of ancient Persia, the empire's Jewish citizens face an ominous edict that threatens their very existence. Roxannah, the daughter of an impoverished Persian lord, is devastated by the news but feels helpless to come to the aid of her Jewish friends. Desperate to support her family, Roxannah approaches the royal physician, Adin--the man whose kind eyes haunt her--and seeks his help to find employment in Queen Esther's kitchens.

In the opulent palace of Susa, Roxannah tries to survive the spiteful ploys of the other cooks as she ascends through the ranks. Her loyalty earns her the trust and friendship of Queen Esther, who is navigating dangerous politics with wisdom and grace. When Roxannah and Adin uncover a sinister plot against Amestris, the king's most powerful wife and Esther's archenemy, they find themselves tasked with the impossible job of discovering the culprit. As secrets unravel and alliances are tested, the fate of Esther's reign hangs in the balance.

My Thoughts:

The Queen’s Cook read like classic Tessa Afshar, which is to say… it was a thoroughly entertaining novel with romance, truth, and beautiful themes. From the start, Afshar’s prose flowed easily as it unpacked information. Her writing felt confident and was crafted so that the scenes always moved the story forward in some way. Like Roxannah creating her pistachio cake, Afshar deftly added the ingredients of historical details, longshot romance, delectable meals, palace intrigue, character growth, and spiritual truths to create a five-star reading experience.

To elaborate on the elements in The Queen’s Cook, I’ll start with the historical setting. Roxannah’s noble status and experiences in Esther’s royal kitchen richly depicted the Persian court under Xerxes, an environment where palace intrigue swirled amid every level of social status. As Roxannah and Adin were drawn into the mystery and danger, they faced underhanded workers in the kitchen, a cunning wife of Xerxes, and power dynamics among the royal court. Quite a perilous blend.

As expected, The Queen’s Cook included culinary delights. I found the exotic dishes interesting even for a non-foodie like me. Naturally, food played a part in establishing and perpetuating the romance between Adin and Roxannah. I enjoyed Adin’s kind and thoughtful treatment of Roxannah despite the hard issues between them. It was lovely to watch their romance unfold.

Being raised in Persian nobility, Roxannah showed herself to be morally upright, loyal, and clever, but she did not devote herself to any deity. Even so, Afshar weaved in spiritual themes as Roxannah’s past trauma and current circumstances moved her toward knowing the Lord’s mercy and love. Roxannah’s faith journey felt genuine, and I loved that her faith served to make her stronger.

The Queen’s Cook by Tessa Afshar commenced her new series, Queen Esther’s Court. Though the novel felt complete and held a satisfying ending, Esther’s secret scrolls cleverly tie the series together. I am eager for the next novel. Five stars for The Queen’s Cook.
