“I’m a social worker, and the police are almost here. Drop the bat and get away from her.”

“Why would I do that?” He kept watching her with that sleazy grin.

“Kids,” she kept her voice calm for the little ones behind her, “a nice lady is coming for you outside. Go out front and stay there until she comes. You’ll be safe.”

The boy and girl, no older than eight, reluctantly let go of her shirt and started to back toward the door, watching their cruel excuse for a father with wide eyes.

“No, you don’t.” He took a step toward them and raised the bat again. “Get over here, you—” He launched a string of foul words no children should hear. “You do what I say!”

“Go!” Ashley pushed the kids toward the door and whipped around to face the charging monster. She planted herself in his path. He’d have to kill her to get to those kids.

“Ms. Gray, the FBI frowns on chokeholds unless they are absolutely necessary, justified use of force.”

She didn’t loosen the triangle choke or show any sign she’d heard Callum.

He stepped closer.

A growl snapped Callum’s attention to his right.

A dog emerged from the shadow between two cars, its teeth bared. The tan dog stared at Callum with startling blue eyes as he rumbled again.

Callum didn’t dare move with her K-9 threatening him. But he could still speak. “I’m going to have to insist you let Peterson go. The FBI can’t handle a suspect in this way.” Callum risked gradually angling his gaze away from the dog to check on Willis.

Phoenix unwrapped her legs from around his neck and planted her feet wide as she stood.

Willis lay on the ground, unmoving.

“Dagian.” She delivered the single word in her firm, deep voice.

The K-9 stopped growling as Ms. Gray took a step toward Callum, stopping a few feet in front of him.

She watched him with eyes he hadn’t been able to see clearly before, thanks to the cap she’d worn at the meeting and her distance from him then. They appeared to be dark blue.

And completely devoid of emotion.

The woman had beauty, brains, courage, and toted a gun and knife he was sure she knew how to use. It couldn’t get any better than that.

“I’ll get on his left side here. You can go on his right, and I’ll pass the rope under him to you.” Her directions brought him out of his observations to see she was hefting the coiled rope off her shoulder and over her head.

Occupational hazard to get lost in observations and imagination. But he couldn’t help it this time. He’d been searching for weeks for the right idea for his next book series. And now, she was staring him in the face.

“What’s your name?”

“Excuse me?” She shot him a glance with raised eyebrows as she unwound one end of the rope.

“I just need you to breathe for me, okay, Eddie?” The woman’s tone stayed even and calm. “The ambulance will be here soon, and we’ll get you help with the pain.”

Branson stepped to her side, where he could see she held Kicker’s wrist in her slim fingers, apparently checking his pulse. Was she a medic instead? Her bounty of curls blocked her face from view.

He crouched beside her. “How’s he doing?”

The woman started and leaped away faster than the pond frogs back home.

Michael swung back to face Amalia “I don’t know why you lied to them and why you’re lying now, but you know better than anyone I won’t lie. For you or anyone else.”

An odd sensation pinged her chest. As if he’d shot an arrow that bounced off the rock of her heart. She mentally brushed away the laughable image and returned to her objective—persuading an uncooperative protected witness not to blow her cover.

“There’s a lot at stake in your cooperation, though I can’t tell you what it is.” The words, You’ll have to trust me, died before they came out. She wouldn’t go that far. Not with Michael. She didn’t even trust herself, and she was the last person he would trust.

It’d be a tell that suggested compromise, giving up ground. “You don’t need to lie about knowing me or keep our history a secret if you’re asked directly. He walked farther away from her and stopped at the end of the king-sized bed, looking out the glass patio doors ten feet in front of him. “Okay.”

Amalia relaxed her grip on Raksa’s leash. Another successful negotiation.

The golden retriever smelled the suitcase, her feathered tail swishing with excitement.

“Sir, I’m afraid you’re going to have to stay and allow your suitcase to be searched.” Cora’s voice trembled slightly as trepidation coursed through her veins. “No.” Cora’s heart thudded against her ribs, as if an instinctive warning of self-preservation. But she darted in front of the two men, using Jana’s wagging body to help block them. “I’m sorry, but you can’t leave.” She started to turn toward Frank.

Someone grabbed her arm and yanked her backward.

Cora gasped.

“Don’t you dare.” The younger man leveled the threat in a low growl. He stood just behind her to one side, his body an uncomfortable inch or two away from hers. He squeezed her arm as he leaned in, an odor that suggested he hadn’t bathed in a while assaulting her nostrils.

“Feel this?” He pressed something hard into her back through her jacket.
