Excerpt from Love Between the Pages

“I’m glad you and Jayden find it funny to toy with an old lady’s heart.”

“You can’t take it personal. He and I are just friends, and we always will be. I don’t think I can imagine my life without him in it. He’s always been there. I’m not sure if there’s more I can ask for.”

Aunt Wanda threw both palms in the air, flipped them back and forth, then broke out into the hook of Beyoncé’s song, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” She swayed her hips and moved her shoulders to the rhythm.

Lisa doubled over in laughter. Tears sprang to her eyes. Aside from the fact that Aunt Wanda was moving just as well as the entertainer herself, the dance caught her off guard. Why did she leave her phone on the counter? This would have been the perfect moment to record her shenanigans.

Lisa regained her composure and played along. “You don’t think it’s weird for me to ask my best friend to put a ring on it?”

“Honey, I am sixty-five years old, which means that I’ve seen a lot in my day, including how you two act around each other and how you look at each other. I know love when I see it.” She shoved a hand into her hip as if to solidify her point.

Still kneeling next to the box, Lisa looked up at her. “Of course I love him. He’s my best friend, aside from Ginger.”

“Don’t go bringing Ginger into this. She’s come to her senses.”

“Maybe you should have this conversation with Jayden and see what he thinks about you trying to hook us up.”

“How do you know I haven’t? Maybe he’s waiting for you to be sure of him.”

Lisa’s breath caught, and her gaze stilled on her.

Is that true?

At closing time, she hurriedly rounded the corner into the walkway and crashed into a man’s chest that had to be made of steel, knocking the cell phone out of his hand.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry.” She knelt to pick it up, but a strong hand on her wrist stopped her.

“No, no, you’re okay. I should’ve been watching where I was headed. I was a little too preoccupied.” He waved the phone in the air. “You’re…good.” His dark brown eyes widened.

“Ginger.” Her name came off his lips in a whisper, a mixture of disbelief, recognition, and a plethora of other emotions she was certain.

Ginger’s eyes trailed up to his and air trapped in her chest. Her eyebrows raised above her glasses, and her eyes fluttered. She suddenly needed water, and for a moment, she couldn’t decide whether to run and scream or throw her arms around Brock Pearson’s neck because she hadn’t seen him in over twenty years.

“Brock,” she’d finally said, still unable to complete a full cycle of breathing. All of a sudden, her brain ceased sending signals to the rest of her body as she stood in the middle of the food court, unable to take her eyes off him.

And him her.

The light chatter in the distance, the music humming from the PA system, and mall patrons all faded as she struggled to pull her thoughts together. Granted the Houston metro area was large enough not to run into the same person twice, but to see Brock after nearly twenty years tossed her off her axis. What was he doing there? Had he moved back to town? What was he doing with his life? All valid questions, yet Brock was none of her concern anymore.

She’d spent the entire summer before her freshmen year in college getting over their breakup.

“It’s good to see you,” he finally said. He had to be in as much shock as she was because his gaze remained fixated on her—a spiral of emotions flashing in his eyes. And she almost hated to see it because something stirred within her.

Mason paced the vinyl flooring for far too many minutes. He’d never understood why hospitals even had emergency rooms because he’d never seen anyone acting with enough urgency—and his father being injured was an urgent matter.

Mason approached the nurse again. “Ma’am, I’m here to see Walter Sterling. Where’s the doctor?”

Another nurse walked into the area, and the desk nurse seemed relieved. She approached Mason. “May I have your name?”

“Mason Sterling. Walter Sterling is my father. I need to see him.”

She tapped the screen on an electronic tablet. “The doctor will be out to see you shortly. Please follow me.”

The nurse led him to a more private area and disappeared. How many more times did he have to hear the doctor would be out before he actually saw him or her?

Mason huffed and paced for another twenty minutes in the small space. He stopped short when an older Black woman wearing a white coat entered the room. When they locked eyes, his feet couldn’t move fast enough to get to her.

“I’m Mason Sterling. Is my father okay? When can I see him?”

He searched her eyes for any sign of his father’s health status, but her face was as emotionless as the nurse who led him into the room minutes ago.

“Hi, Mason. I’m Dr. Riley.” She gestured toward a nearby chair. “Please have a seat.”

“I’d rather stand. When can I see him?”

“I’m sorry, Mason. Your father didn’t make it.”

Mason stood paralyzed.

Unable to move.

Unable to speak.

Unable to think.

She continued talking, but the words tumbled out of her mouth like puzzle pieces of the same color. He couldn’t decipher a single word. Blood rushed to his brain. His heart raced fast enough for him to believe he’d need a hospital bed.

A knot formed in Mason’s throat that he couldn’t swallow. If he did, tears would overtake him. Pain settled there. His stomach taut. All of his muscles tightened.

Mason belted out, “No.” Air barely escaped his lungs as he had to force himself to breathe.

The pain in his chest was just as real physically as it was emotionally. His heart ripped into pieces. That was the only explanation for the stabbing sensation in his chest. His eyes stung as tears spilled down his cheeks soaking his collar.

He finally sat in that chair Dr. Riley suggested he take. She’d mentioned something about whether there was someone else she could call for him. Usually, his father would be that person, and now he had no one.

Ava swiveled her head in the direction of the familiar voice. “Aunt Elaine, hi. How’ve you been?” Though she adored Elaine Waters, a woman who was like family to the Langstons and worked at their company for more than twenty years, Ava forced a smile. She hadn’t talked to her in the five years since Elaine had left Langston Brands. The polite thing to do would be to spend a few minutes talking to her or at least promise to call, but thoughts of a potential sweatshop operation taunted her.

Elaine wrapped her arms around Ava’s neck. “I’ve been well. It’s so good to see you.” She pulled away and held Ava at arm’s length. “You look amazing.”

Ava felt her smile become more genuine. “Thank you.”

“I’m meeting a friend for dinner, but let’s catch up soon. It’s been too long.”

“I agree. Let’s schedule lunch sometime.”

“I look forward to it.” Elaine kissed her cheek and vanished as quickly as she’d appeared.

Ava made a mental note to contact Elaine later while she dealt with the situation that was minutes from making her lose her mind. First, she called Crystal, then asked her to add Layla to the call. When she arrived at her car, a tissue was tucked in the door handle.

Ewww.

She grabbed the tissue by her fingernails and threw it to the ground.

“We’ve got a problem,” Ava said when both of her sisters were on the line. She reached for the door handle, but her hand fell limp at her side. In a matter of seconds, her body grew weak, and everything went dark.

Crystal glanced down at her hands to see that she’d been squeezing the life out of Marcel’s fingers.

“I’m sorry. Didn’t mean to hurt you.”

“You didn’t.” He placed a gentle hand on her back and ushered her toward the building so they could give their statements.

But they didn’t make it inside.

One of the officers, stopped them.

“Ma’am, please place your hands behind your back.”

The officer cuffed her. The cold metal secured around her wrists ensured her that this wasn’t a nightmare. Dante’s murder was real and she was about to be arrested for a crime she didn’t commit.

Her back burned from the accusing eyes of her classmates. All she could think about was who would’ve done such a thing. From all she knew, they were all Dante fans. Her eyes settled on his agent and long-time friend Jacob Jackson filing into the building. Thankfully, his eyes weren’t laser beams because she’d be seared in half by now. His arms were wrapped around Wynter, who was screaming, crying, and pointing at Crystal saying, “Why would you do this to him?”

Her mind reeled back to her argument with Dante. Why didn’t she just leave after her first run-in with him?

INTERVIEW WITH NATASHA

Q: What was the inspiration behind With Every Step?

Natasha: Darius McCall – our male main character. He inspired the story. While writing With Every Breath, book 1 in the McCall Family Series, his voice grew louder and louder. His side of things needed to be shared, so here we are.

Q: How long did it take you to write this novel?

Natasha: I think the first draft took roughly two months to write.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this novel?

Natasha: I can’t say I have a favorite quote, but I do have a favorite scene–and that is when Kennedy and Darius first meet each other. The electricity that sparks at the first meeting gets me every time.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from With Every Step?

Natasha: Life is about balance. I know this, but it’s a concept I constantly struggle with, simply because when I commit to something, I go all in, full force. Because of this, sometimes I can lose focus of what’s most important–and that is family and those I love (and who love me) most.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers would not know?

Natasha: Caramel is my jam. I’d likely try anything with caramel in it. It’s showed up as a favorite of one of my characters in many of my books. 😊

Q: What are you reading now?

Natasha: Evidence of Innocence by Shirlee McCoy

Q: How many bookcases are in your home?

Natasha: Two. One for the kids and one for me, which is more like a long shelf.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Natasha: I work as an accountant during the day, so that takes up a huge chunk of my time. Otherwise, I’m probably watching a movie with my family or catching up on my reading.

She has nothing to lose, but loving her could cost him everything. Is he willing to risk it all a second time around when she has less than thirty days to live?

Renowned motivational speaker Nina Marie Robinson has received a grim prognosis. With the little time she has left, she’s giving one last commencement speech at her alma mater Jackson State University and taking a well-deserved vacation to the Bahamas. Nina is also determined to show her college sweetheart she’s still in love with him, but can she convince him to drop everything and board that plane with her?

Andrew McCall is one step away from being promoted to professor at Jackson State University. If anything goes wrong, Andrew will find himself in the last place he wants to be—chief executive officer of McCall Resorts as his father’s successor. When Nina comes to town and requests that he accompany her to the Bahamas, will he have to choose between the woman he’s always loved and everything he’s worked for?

EXCERPT

Nina followed signage to the hall of instructor offices. Andrew’s door had been the second to the right, and she marched down the hall and stopped. Light shined into the hallway from his open door, and a sudden onset of dizziness came over her. She stumbled over to the wall and rested her head against the cold surface until the spinning subsided.

Nina inhaled and exhaled once. I can do this. I didn’t come all this way just to give a speech. Nina took another calming breath. We’ve got unfinished business. So what it’s been nearly two decades. One more calming breath, and she stood, squared her shoulders, moved to the open door, and tapped twice. Help me, Lord.

“Come in.”

How had she forgotten the smoothness of his tenor voice? She could have melted on the spot when he looked up from his laptop and his almond eyes took hold of hers, laced with a softness she probably didn’t deserve from him.

He was happy to see her.

She gripped the doorknob to steady herself. Too bad there was nothing to steady the flip-flop going on with the rapid pacing of her heart. His features hadn’t changed much, but it was apparent he’d aged. His physical maturity served him well. The light stubble under his chin, the dark cleanly shaven mustache, his strong jawline set against the canvas of his mahogany skin. If she had to die soon, she knew right then that she wanted to spend her last days with him.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Natasha D. Frazier

Natasha D. Frazier fell in love with love around the age of twelve because of artists like Babyface, Boys II Men, Whitney Houston, and New Edition. Around sixteen when her mother purchased a romance novel and left it lying around the house untouched, Natasha read it and a spark for the written word had been ignited.

Natasha believes that writing is one of her purposes and contributions to the world. She feels accomplished when she can get a few words written and like blah when life gets in the way. Her hope is that at the end of every novel, readers will feel like they’ve been wrapped in a cozy blanket with a mug of their favorite coffee/tea/warm drink.

When she isn't reading or writing, she is likely watching movies with her family. Natasha resides in Richmond, TX with her husband, Eddie Frazier, Jr. and their three children, Eden, Ethan, and Emilyn. Her greatest joy and commitment is to her family who she hopes to inspire above all else. One of her many mottos in life is: Faith removes limitations. Natasha and her family attend Parkway Fellowship in Richmond, TX, where she volunteers as a small group leader for elementary students. Natasha is also a member of the Houston Area Alumni Chapter of Jackson State University and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
