Authors:
Sara Davison, Darlene L. Turner, Helena Smrcek, & Melanie Stevenson
Publisher:
Independent (Fab Four Press)
Release Date:
October 29, 2024
Genre:
Contemporary Christmas anthology

With chaos and confusion all around them, can they find their way home this Christmas?

The people in these four stories are all searching for something—an escaped convict, a job promotion from a love interest, connection to a lost parent, answers across time.

Christmas should be a time of wonder and celebration, but the obstacles each faces seem insurmountable. Even, at times, life-threatening.

Perhaps they will find what they are seeking during this season of miracles and hope. Or maybe, with God’s help, they will discover that the longing of their hearts takes them to places—and people—they didn’t even know they’d been searching for.

I’ll Be Home is a collection of four stories of faith, hope, love, (and trains) that will warm your heart, encourage your soul, and draw you home this Christmas.

Emory’s gaze flew to Hunter’s. His contorted expression revealed the same thought as hers.

They still had a killer to catch.

If they didn’t, whoever had poisoned Rose Watson would get away with it.

The cowbell clanged, announcing breakfast.

Thirty minutes later, after yummy pancakes, Autumn rose from the table. “Time to get the turkey in the oven and then the kids can open their gifts.”

Their Christmas feast finished mid-afternoon after the kids enjoyed playing with their new toys. The group had scattered to finish packing, since they were leaving shortly.

“Sissy, can you get me some canned peaches from the root cellar?” Autumn asked. “I want to make a fresh peach cobbler for tonight. We’re gonna have a quiet evening. Joel, can you get more firewood? Hunter, can you stoke the fire in the living room? I don’t want it going out.”

“Yes, Mom.” Emory saluted before walking into the hallway and snatching the coat from the last hook. She put it on and stuffed her hands into the pockets.

And fingered a velvet bag. Wait—what?

She looked closer at the coat. Same dark color as hers, but not hers. Emory pulled the bag out and opened it, dropping the contents into her hand. Pearls. A ruby ring. An emerald necklace.

Rose Watson’s jewelry, but whose coat was Emory wearing?

“I wish you hadn’t done that,” a sinister voice whispered.

Emory gasped and pivoted, staring down the barrel of a shotgun.

And into the eyes of the Double H Ranch’s killer.

Excerpt from Love Across Time by Helena Smrcek

Beth took her heavy coat off the hook in the staff room and slipped into it. It was the first day of December, and the English winter had a bite. The damp weather seemed to burrow straight into her bones. She picked up the remnants of her first attempt at decorating the ward for Christmas. The men who had rushed in earlier that afternoon had knocked over the coffee tin she used as a vase and trampled over the evergreen branches. She’d toss them back into the woods on her way to the nurses’ accommodations and pick fresh ones as she walked to the hospital tomorrow morning. The men in her hospital should have something festive to look at, if only twigs and berries.

Beth took her warm gloves out of her purse, then quietly closed the staff room door behind her, mindful of the injured.

As she walked to the front door, she passed the night nurse and Beth’s good friend, Henrietta, carrying a tray of tea to the ward.

Beth touched Henrietta’s arm. “Send for me if there is an emergency.”

“It will be a quiet night. The fog is thick today. The night bombers are grounded.”

“A good night’s sleep sounds fabulous.”

“See you in the morning,” Henrietta said, her voice already weary.

They were all tired. Exhausted. The airmen, their crews, ground personnel, support staff, doctors, and nurses. How much longer could this go on?

Excerpt from Where My Heart Belongs by Melanie Stevenson

I turn towards a coffee shop, head down to block the wind, intending to step inside to call an Uber. I may as well have ice skates on, as I have taken to sliding my shoes along the ground instead of actually lifting them. The last thing I need is a concussion.

It’s in this assumed position that I skid into a post, which knocks me off balance. I grasp it to right myself, but it’s not attached to the ground. Me, the post, and whatever is hanging from the post tip over.

Now I’m laying prostrate in an ice puddle among, inexplicably, a barrage of coins and bills. I lift my head to watch my suitcase skid down the hill, bump over the sidewalk, and launch off the side of a staircase. It disappears over the edge alongside the plastic ball of money.

Hello day of the fallen books, my old friend.

As if that isn’t bad enough, I look up and, wait for it, the snow boots in my line of vision belong to an exceedingly tall Santa Claus who, mid-ring of a bell dangling from his hand, is staring down at me with dazzling blue eyes.

The first rehearsal was in two hours. How was she going to get there? Could she hitchhike?

Lucy shuddered at the thought of what her dad—and August—would have to say about that. She did know exactly what Anne Shirley would have to say about this situation. This is the most tragical thing that has ever happened to me. A tear of frustration slid down her cheek and onto the steering wheel, leaving a splotch in the dust. Like her dreams. Crumbled to death in the dust. Her forehead still pressed to the center of the wheel, Lucy sighed.

A soft rapping against her window yanked her from her thoughts, and she swiped at her cheek as she straightened. August. Lucy reached for the manual handle and lowered the glass an inch. “I’m fine.”

“Clearly.” His lips twitched. “Anything I can do?”

His amusement was not contagious. “Thank you for your offer of assistance, Mr. Dorey, but it is not required.”

He let out a short laugh. “Getting into character already, I see.” Resting a hand on the roof of the car, he ducked a little to peer through the window. “Look. I was wrong to say this car was worth a penny.”

“Thank you,” she said archly, both hands still on the steering wheel.

“And by wrong, I mean generous.”

BOOK DESCRIPTION

To Kiss a Wallflower is the nineteenth book in the Timeless Regency Collection, a bestselling anthology series from Mirror Press. The book features three novellas from acclaimed historical romance authors whose stories reveal that eventually, all wallflowers will have their chance at love . . . This is where it begins.

“The Wallflower’s Dance,” by Jen Geigle Johnson

Lottie Hughes likes people, as long as they aren't too close. Does it bother her that no one asks her to dance? Yes, but she's not sure how to drum up dance partners when she has almost no dowry, no title, and freezes up when anyone tries to talk to her. When she suddenly inherits a huge amount and is the new center of attention all over London, her secret dreams might come true but also her worst nightmares. Suddenly everyone wants to talk to her. Men ask her to dance. And she is inundated with interested suitors. She fights to stay close to the few friends she knows are true. One man saw her before her life changed forever. But does she want to accept his help when he, too, might be insincere?

“Letters to a Wallflower,” by Heather B. Moore

Ellen might be beautiful and considered a diamond of the first water by Society, but she is so very tired of the pressure to marry a titled gentleman so that her beauty won’t go to waste. When her cousin Dinah dares Ellen to attend a ball with no frills and to stand with the wallflowers, Ellen takes on the dare. What’s in the wager for her? The prize cuttings of her aunt’s extraordinary roses. But what Ellen isn’t expecting is Lord Ravenshire to engage her in the most interesting conversation. When she confesses to him of her opposition in marrying for a title, he confesses his distaste of the London scene. They strike a bargain together, one which will either push them apart or lead to a future sweeter than either of them could have imagined.

“To Marry a Wallflower,” by Anneka R. Walker

Charlotte Winters is destined to spinsterhood until she turns down an unwanted proposal and everything changes. With gossip rampant, her father attempts to salvage her reputation by betrothing her to another. Soon she is sent off to her aunt’s to meet Lord Templeton, her intended. Anxiety-ridden, Charlotte begs her aunt to let her observe Lord Templeton from afar before their introduction. She never planned to pretend to be her fictional cousin to learn more about him, or to fall in love with Lord Templeton’s friend in the process. Lord Templeton dreads returning to the empty halls of Newcliff Manor. When his father’s old friend, Mr. Winters reaches out for assistance, Lord Templeton finds himself returning home engaged to a woman he has never met. Desperate to learn more about Miss Winters, he befriends her cousin. He wouldn’t have spoken to her, or lied about his identity, if he’d known the quiet woman would sneak into his heart.

EXCERPT FROM THE WALLFLOWER'S DANCE

CHAPTER ONE

Despite Lottie’s mother, who wished to know and be known by all and sundry, Lottie was still of the opinion that few people were required for happiness. Three things were needed: her closest friends, a good book, and lovely walks in the park.

And perhaps a husband.

Someday.

If he too preferred little company, books, and walks in the park.

She brought her brush, thick with paint, over the wood of a new table. She’d found a particular shade of lavender and knew it would go well in her sitting room. The lovely rich color covered the white beneath it completely.

Lottie smiled. Once this coat dried, she could add embellishments, flowers, a trailing vine of green, whatever she liked.

Her mother peeked her head in the door to her art room. “Lottie.” The higher-pitched energy that exuded from her mother any time of day only felt companionable when Lottie too was full of energy. Which was usually reserved for the late hours of a ball. Something about the middle of the night filled Lottie with adventure. By then, her mother was typically nodding off in a corner somewhere.

“I’m painting, Mother. Come see this shade of purple. It’s like nothing I’ve ever used before.”

To her credit, she stepped into the room and glanced at the painting. “Very nice. Now. If you could take a break, we need to be stunning, absolutely beautiful for a walk in the park.”

Lottie perked up at walk, but when the gleam in her mother’s eyes sharpened and Lottie paid attention to stunning and beautiful as requirements, she knew this was going to be less about walking and more about being seen. “Perhaps you and your friends could go without me this morning? I’m hoping to finish up this coat.” She knew her excuse sounded weak and her mother did too, judging by the dismissive wave of her fingers.

“Oh come, word has it that Prinny will make an appearance, which suddenly turns a casual walk in the park into a major event of the Season. This is your chance for more introductions, more doors opened to you. Who knows, you may even meet a duke!” The wide, hopeful eyes at the doorway were evidence that Lottie was not going to be able to avoid the park. She left her brush in water and stood, wiping fingers on her apron.

“Should I wear the violet?”

Mother was about to give Lottie’s maid very detailed instructions as to her appearance anyway, so she might as well ask her before choosing a dress herself.

“No, too dark and bold for a walk in the park. Wear a pastel. But a colorful bonnet. Don’t worry, I’ve instructed Dorothea in all the particulars.”

Dorothea, Lottie’s maid, very obviously worked for her mother. She could never be convinced to alter the prearranged instructions on Lottie’s presentation. But no matter. Lottie moved obediently to her bedroom and the preparations began, starting with an intricate hairstyle that would be hidden underneath her bonnet. But Lottie knew better than to discuss her opinion on the particulars. She watched Dorothea in the mirror. Perhaps they would be able to have some entertainment to enliven them both. Entertainment in the form of another maid, reading aloud their latest favorite novel. Lottie’s eyes met Dorothea’s. “Will Penny be able to slip away?”

“I believe so, miss.” Dorothea smiled. She enjoyed the books as much as Lottie, and if Lottie was to be sitting in this chair for hours, they may as well be entertained.

Lottie had discovered the rare occurrence of a servant who knew how to read. Even though she sometimes stumbled, she did less so now that she’d been tasked with the very important assignment of reading to Lottie while she prepared for the day. Penny slipped in through the servants’ entrance. “I’ve just come from the kitchen.” Her mischievous smile made Lottie laugh.

“Are they missing you?”

She waved a hand. “Not at all. Cook has an army of people in there, helping. I’ve finished all my other chores.”

“Excellent and, of course, I called for you. That should help.”

Both servants shared a look, which she took to mean that she had little clout in the servants’ eyes. Well, no matter. “Please start at the beginning.”

Penny nodded, her eyes gleaming with the same hopeful expectation Lottie herself felt. And then she began to read.

“The Family of Dashwood had long been settled in Sussex.”

After years of looking after one another, Susan Baxter and her mother view their neighbors in Totnes as family. When a new landlord inherits the leases on their homes and businesses alike, Susan dreads knowing her world could change at the whim of a stranger. But when she meets Collin Stonecroft and his inquisitive daughter, her feelings shift quickly from cautionary to hopeful. Collin has lived in the confines of London boarding houses all his life, and he’s determined to give his daughter more. They check into the Seventh Star Inn with plans to return to London as soon as possible, but both find Miss Baxter and her local history lessons far too enchanting to leave behind. When Susan learns of Collin’s proposed changes to her beloved neighborhood, will she be able to help him see that some things are perfect the way they are?

The Truth about Mr. Blackmore, by Annette Lyon

Leigh’s life at the Old Grey Inn is drudgery broken by flights of fancy thanks in part to novels by Simon Blackmore. When Mattias McGrady comes to the inn for a fortnight, Leigh captures his attention. A relationship develops, and she dreads the end of his stay, which will mean a return to an unhappy life. An urgent letter to Mattias leads to him inviting Leigh to an event that stands to change both of their lives forever. If all goes well, Leigh will have a life of her choosing after all. But half-truths and lies have a way of complicating matters. When their plans go awry, Leigh loses her reputation and Mattias almost surely loses his career. Can either of them find happiness?

The Coachman’s Choice, by Deborah M. Hathaway

Ever-reliable Mary Thorne has helped her widowed mother run The Golden Mermaid Inn for years. She spends her days greeting guests, ensuring the inn runs smoothly—and dodging flirtatious remarks from passing coachmen. But she’s far too busy to pay any attention to such men, even the enticingly attractive Mr. Northcott. Known far and wide for his horsemanship, punctuality, and dallying reputation, Robert Northcott relishes his life as a coachman, especially his freedom to flirt with numerous women from inn to inn, all without the messy details of commitment. There’s just one woman who's immune to his charms: the lovely, single landlady of The Golden Mermaid. Robert is determined to win Mary over, just as heartily as she is determined to keep her distance from him. But his carefree life is threatened when his pursual of Mary becomes more than just a game...
