The new king is crowned in triumph…
But his pride proves to be a fatal flaw…

And from out of his own house calamity falls upon him

Once a shepherd, a captain, and a fugitive, David is now king. He left behind the dangers of life on the run and embraced the comforts of living in the palace. No longer known as the “giant-slayer,” but as the “lion of Judah,” King David enjoys the popularity and prosperity brought on by his victories.

But peace in the nation of Israel has a double-edged sword. David’s pride subverts his judgment, and his desires overwhelm his heart leading him down a dark pathway. The king will go to any lengths to cover up his crimes, but disaster falls upon the House of David bringing this broken and contrite king to cry out to Yahweh for mercy.

Lion of Judah continues the tale of triumph and tragedy, deepest love and burning rivalries; the new epoch is given a voice…and it is The Song of Prophets and Kings

Excerpt from Lion of Judah

She lifted both goblets and held them above the firelight. Only two residents would be on this terrace tonight. They had enough food and drink to satiate appetite and thirst for several days and nights without being disturbed.

So much time had been lost. So much to restore.

This elaborate setting was not her doing. Mikal had not ordered servants or handmaidens to decorate this balcony and prepare this feast. She did not have servants. She could not claim the handmaidens who had bathed and dressed her as hers to beckon or command. This terrace had been prepared for her by the one with whom she would share it. David had thought through this evening, down to the last detail. The king had been thinking of her.

The harshness of long years of separation were receding as she gave herself over to the fantasy of what the rest of the evening could be—all pleasure, all delight, the luxuriant warmth of her husband, the satisfied tenderness of his love.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Lion of Judah?

Henry: Lion of Judah is the fifth and final novel of The Song of Prophets and Kings series. The inspiration for writing all of these five volumes was not only a desire to honor God, but to take these ancient stories and offer a glimpse into our own modern story. I believe the biblical past illuminates our present day. I believe we can read the stories of David and Mikal (marriages), Bathsheba and Solomon (mothers and sons), Nathan and Gad (dear friends), David and Solomon (fathers and sons), and Absalom and Tamar (siblings), as our own story. These stories, indeed, all biblical stories, are our stories. This has been my greatest reward as I conclude this series.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Henry: I would say a decade or longer when I began the early process of research and testing out storylines for The Song of Prophets and Kings series. I was a good three years into the writing before my agent found WhiteFire Publishing who signed on to publish the series. I needed to do some major rewriting before the first volume, A Voice Within the Flame, was ready for publication in 2020. Lion of Judah, the final volume, took about eight months for me to turn in a complete the first draft. It has been a long but wonderful process.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Henry: I enjoy the research almost as much as the writing. I do a general level of research before jumping into the writing but will inevitably pause to investigate any historical detail that fascinates me and that I might want to incorporate into the story. For example, what is the recipe of spices and oils that go into the ointment for anointing the king? This process not only expands the storylines but adds deeper dimensions to the characters. Knowing as much as I can about the time period (religious and cultural practices, politics, economics, warfare), informs the choices for my characters and enriches the narratives.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Lion of Judah?

Henry: That’s a hard one to pick, but after David is convicted of his sin against Bathsheba and the murder of Uriah, I have David come to the Tabernacle to utter his great confession of Psalm 51.

“David stopped between the Altar and the Laver. He gazed at the closed curtains that concealed the Holy Place and its sacred furnishings. Just beyond was the Holy of Holies where that most sacred of objects resided, the Ark of the Covenant with the winged cherubim of the Mercy Seat that fashioned the throne of Yahweh.

He had danced before the Ark while it was paraded through his city and upon the mountain of Yahweh where Abraham had come to sacrifice his son Isaac. He was now the sacrifice. He was now the one who would willingly throw himself upon the altar. David was the one in need of mercy, forgiveness, of the great compassion of Yahweh if only it might be available. He had thrown off all restraint and broken covenant. What he had done could not vanish like a mist by the divine breath of Yahweh just by rote confession.

David raised his arms, but that was not enough. He took the crown from his head and tossed it to the ground, but that was not enough. He rent his garment, but that was not enough. He dropped to his knees, but that was not enough. He began to weep, but that was not enough. He fell upon his face digging his fingers into the earth and pouring the dirt granules upon his head, but that was not enough. Nothing was enough. Nothing he could do was enough. Only Yahweh was enough.”

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Henry: I began my professional acting career in 1970. I was in love with the language of the theatre and how playwrights used language to tell stories drawing out emotions and truths that could touch the hearts of people. A few years into my career I set out to try my hand at writing stories, plays, screenplays, and novels. It has provided me much satisfaction when I know something I’ve written has touched someone’s heart.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Henry: I love mowing our lawn with my zero-turn mower.

Q: What are you currently reading?

Henry: Walking on Water by Madeleine L’Engle and A Swim in a Pond in The Rain by George Saunders.

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Henry: It depends on my mood: Literary fiction and action adventure, but I read all types of genres.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Henry: I love outdoor activities. I love gardening. I love sauntering on a trail. I love traveling and exploring in other countries. And I love doing all of this with my wife Kay, my best friend of forty-six years.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Henry: Fall because of the colors.
Winter because of the cold and bareness of the forests
Spring because of the world coming back to life.
Summer…you can have summer.

Excerpt from The Surprise Next Door

“Sorry to cause a fuss. My dog escaped. I was chasing after him,” Nicole explained, hooking her thumb over her shoulder in the direction of the cottage. “New neighbor.”

“I have a new friend, Daddy.” Holly hugged Gus, who ate up the attention by falling on his back to get tummy rubs. “Can he stay and play?”

Nicole tried not to roll her eyes over Gus’s antics. Then she read the indecision on the man’s face. “He’s safe,” she assured him, also noting the love shimmering in the depths of his dark eyes. The earthy scent of his cologne—sandalwood, maybe?—tickled her senses.

“For a minute, while I talk to…”

Nicole moved to the steps and held out her hand, wishing she had put on a cute sundress instead of a baggy T-shirt and shorts. “Nicole Connelly.”

He stepped down to the ground, taking her hand in his. “Ethan Price.”

When his skin touched hers, a tingle shot up her arm. Her gaze flew up to meet his, catching the surprise that matched hers. He quickly masked his response while she removed her hand from his to tuck her thick, short hair behind one ear, and she wondered again where his wife was. She attempted what she hoped was a sneak peek at his ring finger, finding it bare, which was good in light of her reaction to his touch. Still, no ring didn’t mean no wife…

This couldn’t be happening.

Celia stared at her parents. Are they serious? They generally weren’t known for their senses of humor, but still she held out a thin sliver of hope that their shocking announcement was some sort of weird experiment.

A let’s-freak-out-the-kids-then-break-it-to-them-that-it’s-a-joke sort of prank. But they showed no sign of moving past the life-altering pronouncement. Okay, maybe not life-altering, more like summer-destroying.

Either way, she had to admit it, this beyond-awful plan would make the perfect, cruddy ending to her disastrous school year. A month in an enclosed space with the family? Pure torture.

“Charlie, you let me do the talking.” A slight nod was all she received as they approached Mr. Trexler.

“Mr. Trexler, this is my brother, Charlie.”

The two sized each other up during a long handshake.

Rachel took a breath to speak, but Charlie jumped in, “My sister here needs a husband, and I need a job.”

Rachel gasped.

“You seem like a decent man. Marry Rachel, and she’ll help with the kids. I’ll work for you till I can stand on my own.” He thrust out his hand. “Deal?”

“Charles Dalton!” Rachel exclaimed.

“Deal,” Mr. Trexler said.

The men went on making plans while Rachel stood in stunned silence. As soon as they were away from the orphanage, she promised herself Charlie would get a proper tongue-lashing—if she could get her tongue to cooperate.

Tess turned to us. “Maebell? As in Maebell Franks?”

Brett’s eyes widened. “Yes, do y’all know each other?”

“It’s more like I know of her. Would you give me a minute to speak to your aunt?” Tess’s Mixie hairstyle remained as perfect as the moment she arrived. The Texas heat and humidity hadn’t damaged or frizzed her style in the least.

“She’ll be visiting for a few days. What about I introduce you two, and you can arrange to meet later?”

“That will work.” Tess moved to the other rocking chair, knelt, and started a conversation with the older woman.

Brett looked at me. “What’s that all about?”

I shrugged. “I have no idea, but something is going on with Tess.”

Cowboy wiggled, and I let him down but kept a grip on the leash.

Jake winked at me. “Can I take him for a little walk?”

“Thanks.” I passed the leash to him.

The two headed to the side yard, and I gathered cups and napkins while attempting to eavesdrop on the conversation between Tess and Maebell.

Attorney. Land rights. Offer.

Those were the three words I heard before Brett ended the conversation.

“Aunt Maebell, let’s get you out of this heat.” Brett held a hand out to his aunt.

“Oh, dear, Tess and I just started our conversation.”

Brett paused. “Tess, will you be at the library tomorrow? Can we schedule a time for you two to meet?”

Tess nodded. “I’ll take my break at a time convenient for you.”

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Bleeding Heart Librarian

Jackie: I was inspired to write this seris after a trip to Waco, Texas. I discovered so many friendly people, and I enjoyed the farmers market. One of Emma Justice’s friends is the local librarian, and I’ve been wanting to write a story set in a library. So, this seemed like the perfect opportunity.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Jackie: It took me six months before turning it into my publisher.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Jackie: I learned about heirs' property, and I read stories where people were taken advantage of. It kinda broke my heart.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Bleeding Heart Librarian

Jackie:  “Somebody reported suspicious activity at Tess Carranza’s house. Did you two break in?” His voice croaked, and dark circles had formed under his eyes.

I removed the key and showed it to the police chief. “I had permission to be here, and I came and got the plants. Just because Tess is gone, it doesn’t mean her plants should die too.”

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Jackie: I always wanted to write, but I never imagined I would get published. When my youngest son was in high school, I decided it was time to at least try to write a book.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Jackie: I’m not artistic, but I took piano lessons growing up, and I played the saxophone in high school. I was in the marching band, concert band, and pep band.

Jackie: Panic in the Panhandle by J.C. Kenney.

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Jackie: Cozy mysteries

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Jackie: Going for walks on the beach, and thankfully I live close enough to drive to the beach.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Jackie: Spring is my favorite season because I love to see all the flowers and plants blooming.
