My answer: Literary Criticism. I don't mind writing it for my classes and perhaps my book reviews are a minor form of literary criticism, but somehow I just don't like to sit and read it.

ReplyDeleteReturning the "Hop." I see what you mean about literary criticism. I have a hard time writing critical reviews. If I really don't like a book, I just forgo the review all together. Guess I'm a wimp that way, but since I've never had anything published, I would feel kind of hypocritical giving a negative review to someone who had the guts to put themselves out there.

ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to say I'm a skimmer. Book review on blogs I follow are one thing, but five page in depth discussions usually require skimming for me.

ReplyDeleteThere may be full length books of literary criticism, but I'm not sure. My experience with literary criticism comes mainly from my college Literature classes and those are usually no more than 30 pages. Still, it is tiresome reading to me.

ReplyDeleteI really only find negative book reviews helpful if the reviewer can give specific reasons why they are begin negative.
On the other hand, I've read books that got great reviews and I did not like them. I'd much rather read an honest review even if the reviewer didn't like everything about the book.
Personally, when I give a review on a book that I didn't love, I try give constructive criticism rather than being outright negative. There is a difference!
