Actress Kara Kensington flies to New Hope, Wisconsin, where she'll spend the winter holidays filming a movie. Her entire career depends on the success of the feel-good story based on her best friend's life. To salvage her strained friendship with Dani, Kara asks the cute guy from the flight to act as her new boyfriend. But the longer she spends with him, the less she's acting.

For Chef Scott Neil, his holidays aren't only about family togetherness. He wants Aunt Shirley and Uncle Ted to retire. When he's asked to fake a relationship with Kara, he agrees. As he gets drawn into Kara's production, he questions what is real and what's just for show. Only a fool would fall in love with America's sweetheart.

Excerpt:

“I might step out and say hello.” He lifted the sleeve of his grease-soaked shirt and sniffed. “Maybe I should change first.”

Aunt Shirley gasped. “You know her?!”

Uncle Ted dropped his spatula, the metal clattering against the flattop.

“We met on the plane from L.A.” Scott shrugged. “We were seatmates in first class and then sort of caravanned to New Hope.” I didn’t recognize her. He’d keep the little tidbit a secret. Revealing his obliviousness wasn’t endearing.

“You didn’t tell us?” Aunt Shirley covered her gaping mouth with a palm.

Scott chuckled. “When did we have time for chit chat? Between the parade crowd here and the rush at the dinner theater, I barely saw you two, let alone made small talk.”

“Well…. Well… You could have told us something important,” Aunt Shirley said.

Like why I’m really here? He swallowed the lump blocking his airway. He needed to tread lightly. While he anticipated some of the pushback, he wasn’t ready for all. Until he had a counterpoint for their every argument, he feared revealing his plan too soon. He liked to be in control. With too many moving parts, he couldn’t guarantee an outcome but knew his non-negotiables.

For peace of mind, he needed them nearby and safe. His life didn’t work in New Hope. If uprooting was the solution, he would have done so already. Cooking the same food ad nauseum killed his creative soul. He didn’t mind helping but couldn’t assume control of the diner. “I’m sorry. I should have.”
