Exerpt: Beginning of Chapter 7 (Power Play)

One month prior: Herod’s Jerusalem palace complex, 7 days after his death

If tonight’s banquet contained a scrap of authentic homage, Antipas would be surprised. The preplanned excesses of Herod’s funeral and the past six days of mourning had been staged farces.

Why should tonight’s gathering be sincere? His brother, Archelaus, had been entrusted with the arrangements for both.

Antipas balled his hands into fists. A deathbed twist in Herod’s will had denied Antipas the entirety of his father’s kingdom as well as his title. He hadn’t even inherited Judea. Archelaus ruled it now.

Antipas paused at the entrance of the banquet hall. The last time he’d dined there, he had watched his father regale the Magi from Persia. Although he wanted to leave Jerusalem and tonight’s spectacle, his mind nagged him to stay. He had unfinished business here. With his dead father.

As an interminable roll call of guests droned on about Herod’s accomplishments, Antipas asked himself what he owed his father. No one knew of the private pledge Herod had forced upon him. Only the gods could hold him accountable for it, and he was fairly sure they didn’t care. Why should he still be obligated to fulfill his promise to eliminate the Magi?

He wasn’t a killer like his father. On the other hand, following through on his pledge could gain him visibility, demonstrate his decisiveness in exercising authority. On a larger scale, it could cement his stance against false prophets and others seeking to disturb the peace with their talk about Yeshua. Antipas would be seen as a strong ruler, even if it was from a throne in Galilee.

Maybe he should have pursued the Magi more ardently. No matter. Eventually they would have to travel Roman roads to return home, and the stationarii remained on notice to apprehend the Magi until they—or someone else—did.

Antipas observed his barely older brother from a distance. Archelaus maneuvered from guest to guest with gusto, his face flushed with schoolboy adrenaline. Tsk. An overeager host with no sense of pacing. Had he learned nothing from their father? At such events, Herod the Great always moved with precision timing—lingering long enough to make each guest feel seen and appreciated, while devoting the shortest possible measure to leave that impression. Herod reserved longer encounters solely for his benefit: to make a point, glean information, gain approval, or woo an unlikely ally.

Enjoy your moment, brother. You’re already in trouble with the Jews.

"One day I’m going to marry you..."

Jake Harper had said those words to Vanessa Conroy since kindergarten, but after watching her parents’ bitter divorce and living with her mother’s devastation, Vanessa made a promise to herself—she’s never getting married. She’ll stay single and pursue her dream of being a ready-to-wear fashion designer.

In high school, Vanessa dated and broke up with every bad boy in the book, while Jake remained her consistent buddy. He was her wingman, her best friend, her go-to person for special occasions, but she held him at a distance. Why ruin a wonderful friendship? On the night of their final prom, Jake takes a risk and kisses her. Stunned by how right it feels, Vanessa rashly blurts out a deal: if they’re still single at thirty, maybe she’ll marry him.

Now, thirteen years later, they’re back in Sweetheart Bay to be part of her sister’s wedding. And they’re both still single at thirty. Vanessa begins to see Jake in a new, more romantic light, but Jake, a successful architect living in California, hasn’t said a word about their old pact.

As family drama bubbles and old feelings resurface, Vanessa must face the one possibility she’s always run from: what if her true love has been standing beside her all along? Can she and Jake find their happily-ever-after back on Sweetheart Bay?

Excerpt

But back to this wedding.

Vanessa had another reason for not wanting to be here. The groom's best man had been her friend all the way through school. Even college, although they'd gone to separate colleges.

Jake Harper.

Here she was back in Sweetheart Bay, at a wedding by the water. Deciding to never get married didn't match being a maid-of-honor and it really didn't fit with the best man being her friend who'd always wanted to marry her. Vanessa had never taken Jake's teasing seriously. Maybe she should have. He hadn’t mentioned that plan since they’d left for different colleges. And why should he? She’d certainly pushed him away over and over. Shouldn’t she be relieved, glad that he’d dropped that subject?

Remembering the night they'd made that ridiculous deal, Vanessa hoped Jake, who'd become a big shot in the architectural world after he’d graduated from college, would have a beautiful model on his arm, the way he always did at the reunions. Seeing him with such lovely women had shocked her but when they'd talked, he was the same old Jake. Funny and down-to-earth and truly the-boy-next-door type. Neither of them had mentioned the wild deal they'd made, and she had to admit she kind of missed him telling her they'd be married one day. She'd often envisioned what things might be like now if she'd let him kiss her a few more times on prom night. Now Jake seemed content and almost as if he'd forgotten Vanessa right along with their deal. Had he finally matured enough to see his life was better without her in it?

Author Interview: The Rustler Hunter by R.J. Sloane

The Rustler Hunter JustRead Blog Tour

About the Book

The Rustler Hunter

Title: The Rustler Hunter
Series: Harper's Justice #1
Author: R.J. Sloane
Publisher: Desert Life Media
Release Date: September 23, 2025
Genre:
Western Action & Adventure, Christian Western, Western Romance

When forty-one successful manhunts make you a legend, there’s only one way left to go—down.

J.J. Westin, the infamous Rustler Hunter, goes undercover at Arizona Territory's largest cattle ranch to expose the rustlers bleeding it dry. The thieves aren't just stealing cattle. They're trusted cowboys operating from inside the bunkhouse.

What he doesn't expect is Hayley Harper, the tough-as-nails cook with secrets of her own. She's a Pinkerton agent working the same case and the daughter of notorious outlaw Galen Harper.

When their covers are blown, they uncover something far deadlier than rustling. A corruption network spanning three territories. With enemies closing in and bullets flying, the legendary manhunter and the outlaw's daughter must survive the badlands of 1898 Arizona, where trust is deadly and justice comes at gunpoint.

In the shadow of Canyon Diablo, where the historic Aztec Land & Cattle Company's Hashknife outfit controlled over a million acres of the Arizona Territory's most lawless land.

Excerpt: Hayley's Kitchen Crisis

The beans were burning.

I'd been so focused on the hushed conversation outside the bunkhouse that I hadn't noticed the acrid scent rising from the cast-iron pot until dark smoke began curling up from the stove. Carter and Mac had been discussing something about "moving the stock" and "adjusting the count" in voices meant not to carry.

My wooden spoon scraped against the bottom of the pot, trying to salvage what I could of tonight's supper, but the damage was already done. I prided myself on my cooking—it was one of the few advantages I had in maintaining my cover—and letting a simple pot of beans burn felt like a failure.

"Problems, Miss Hayley?"

Hutch's voice carried a familiar edge of authority mixed with something darker. He sat at the large wooden table, arms crossed, watching me with the calculating stare of a man who missed nothing. Everything about him reminded me of my father. And that wasn’t a good thing. The way he commanded a room without raising his voice, the cold intelligence behind his eyes.

"Nothing I can't handle," I replied, dumping the burned beans into the slop bucket and reaching for the spare pot I always kept ready. Years of cooking for demanding men had taught me to plan for disasters. "Supper might be a few minutes late, that's all."

"Funny thing about problems, Miss Hayley," Hutch continued. "They have a way of showing a person's true character."

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write The Rustler Hunter?

R.J.: When I was researching Arizona Territory's law enforcement history, I discovered the incredible story of Burt Mossman and the Aztec Land & Cattle Company. Here was this massive million-acre cattle operation (size of Rhode Island and Delaware combined) being bled dry by rustlers—not some gang hiding in the desert, but trusted cowboys stealing from the inside. Mossman's first day on the job, he arrested three rustlers from his own outfit. That's when I knew I had to tell this story.

The inspiration deepened when I learned about female Pinkerton agents working undercover in the 1890s. These women used society's assumptions about "harmless" cooks and laundresses to their advantage while solving crimes that stumped their male counterparts. I thought: what if one of these brilliant female detectives crossed paths with a legendary manhunter on the same case? That's where J.J. Westin and Hayley Harper's story was born.

Q:  How long did it take to write this book?

R.J.: I first started it back in 2023 and worked on it for a good bit of the year. I got about halfway through to a big secret being revealed and suddenly I was stuck! Here I had built up this moment, created all the tension, and I hated my outline for finishing the book. I set it aside for almost another year before picking it up again. After reading through it I knew I had something special. Just needed to put my big boy pants on and slog through the rest of it. After a few more chapters, the rest just flowed. Some stories are like that. They must sit and incubate, as one author friend says, before they are ready to hatch.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

R.J.: I was shocked to discover that female Pinkerton agents were doing undercover work as early as the 1850s. Allan Pinkerton hired women because criminals rarely suspected them of being detectives. Some of these women infiltrated criminal organizations for months, gathering intelligence that led to major arrests.

What really surprised me was learning about the corruption networks. When I started researching cattle rustling, I expected simple theft. Instead, I uncovered sophisticated criminal enterprises spanning multiple territories, complete with forged brands, fake bills of sale, and corrupt officials. The real-life rustling operations were far more complex than anything I initially imagined for my fictional story.

The Aztec Land & Cattle Company's cowboys were nicknamed "the fightin'est, thievin'est bunch in the United States"—and that was by people who liked them! Holbrook had 26 shooting deaths in one year when the population was only 250. These men lived hard and died young.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from The Rustler Hunter?

R.J.: There’s a line early on which sticks with me. J.J. just got caught in a lie. Hayley’s furious, and rightly so. After she’s done flaying him with words sharp enough to draw blood, he thinks to himself: “Well, at least she didn’t jab her wicked bowie knife in my gut. Yet.”

That one word—yet—says it all. J.J.’s a seasoned manhunter, no stranger to danger. He’s faced down rustlers, killers, and worse. But Hayley? She’s something else entirely. Smart, relentless, and not afraid to draw steel if the moment calls for it. That quote captures the tension between them, the heat, the mistrust, the grudging respect. And it’s classic J.J.: bone-dry humor in the middle of a storm. He’s not just afraid of her knife. He’s afraid of what it means—that she’s unpredictable, formidable, and maybe the only person who can cut past his defenses.

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

R.J.: I didn’t set out to be an author. I set out to tell the kind of stories that echoed through my living room on Sunday afternoons. John Wayne squaring off against injustice, James Garner outwitting trouble, Clint Eastwood riding that fine line between vengeance and redemption. My dad and I watched them all. Those westerns taught me that the frontier wasn’t just about dust and gunfire. It was about ordinary folks doing the hard thing, the right thing, even when it cost them.

History’s always had a hold on me. I’d written a few studies for church, but fiction? That came later. One day the ideas started showing up—gritty, stubborn, full of heart—and I couldn’t shake them. I didn’t know everything, but I knew enough to start. So I did.

Now here I am, with The Rustler Hunter out in the world and a prequel that snuck in after the fact. Turns out, storytelling’s got its own kind of frontier—wild, unpredictable, and worth every mile. I’ve caught the bug, no doubt about it. Book two’s already in the works, and I’m not looking back.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn't know?

R.J.: I’ve got a soft spot for old frontier slang. The kind of phrases you don’t hear anymore: “he’s all hat and no cattle,” “don’t squat with your spurs on,” “that feller’s windier than a sack of busted beans.” I keep a running list, not just for flavor but because language tells you how people thought, how they lived. Some of those sayings sneak into my dialogue. Others just make me smile. It’s my way of keeping the dust of history alive.

Q: What are you currently reading?

R.J.: Bill O’Neal’s The Arizona Rangers. It’s research material for Book 3 in the Harper’s Justice series.

I’m also reading a few modern western writers, like William W. Johnstone among others.

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

R.J.: Historical westerns and crime fiction. I love authors like Louis L'Amour and William W. Johnstone for their authentic frontier settings.

I also read a lot of historical non-fiction. You can't write authentic frontier fiction without understanding what daily life was really like for a cattle rancher or a territorial marshal.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

When I’m not writing, I’m usually chasing down pieces of history—old maps, frontier journals, anything that helps me understand the world my characters inhabit. I’ve got a soft spot for Arizona trails and the kind of quiet places where you can still hear the past if you listen close. Some folks call it research. I call it fuel. It’s where the stories live before they hit the page.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

R.J.: Fall in Arizona. The brutal summer heat finally breaks, the desert transforms into something beautiful rather than hostile, and you can spend hours outdoors without feeling like you're being cooked alive. It's perfect weather for hiking to ghost towns and abandoned mines where my characters might have lived and worked.

Fall also feels like the season of stories. There's something about shorter days and cooler nights that makes me want to settle in with a good book or spend long hours writing. Maybe it goes back to childhood when fall meant the start of school and new adventures.

Singing Through Fire

Title: Singing Through Fire
Author:
Lara Silverman, J.D.
Publisher:
Isaiah 4320 Press
Release Date:
August 26, 2025
Genre: Christian Romance/Memoir

What if you fall madly in love on the brink of eternity?

Singing Through Fire invites readers into the Job-like true story of a young woman who loses everything—and dares to ask why a good God allows it.

When Stanford Law graduate Lara Palanjian collapses on her dream job, she never imagines it will lead to four years bedridden—or to the love of her life.

Enter Matthew Silverman: a witty, wise, and impossibly joyful youth pastor and professor facing terminal cancer. What begins with a few random encounters soon ignites an extraordinary, God-written love story that neither of them saw coming.

As their unlikely romance unfolds between medical crises, late-night laughter, and unexpected musical performances, Matthew’s unshakable faith challenges everything Lara thinks she knows about God’s goodness—and what it means to walk with Christlike faith, resilience, and joy in the face of overwhelming grief and suffering.

But with time against them, one question looms louder than the rest: What if this gift is only for a moment?

Shockingly funny and spiritually rich, Singing Through Fire is a modern-day Job meets Lucille Ball. It explores what it means to suffer, love, and even laugh and make music while your life is burning down around you. It eloquently gives voice to the aching questions many sufferers quietly carry—then takes readers inside the breathtaking story of two people who found miraculous love and defiant joy amid heartbreaking loss.

It reveals how God can use even our deepest pain to write the most beautiful love stories—even on the cusp of eternity.

Excerpt (Chapter 18)

My Funny Valentine

Knock. Knock.

My heart pounds as I waddle slowly to the door, clasping onto walls.

I open it, and Matt stands there in beige work trousers, a blue button-down dress shirt, his regular black jacket, and his backpack slung over one shoulder. His signature wide smile falters at the edges, twitching nervously.

Nothing in his hands.

My heart drops.

“Hi Lara,” he says, lips tight, glancing down at his feet.

“Hi Matt,” I respond, gesturing him in.

He parks himself in an isolated chair, then anchors his gaze at his feet.

Mr. Couch sits empty—our usual spot. He seems…nervous? I need a minute.

“Be right back.” I shuffle to the bathroom and close the door behind me. He didn’t bring anything. No flowers? No card? Does he even care? I bite my lip. Why are you so ridiculous? Calm down. You’re just “hanging out.” The guy has cancer. What did you expect, tickets to Paris? Maybe.

I take a breath, square my shoulders, and head back to find Matt perched stiff in the chair, fidgeting with a Kleenex. He darts me a glance when I sit across from him in my own chair. I wrap the pink blanket tight around my legs. Just friends.

Silence.

We sit here frozen, glaring straight at each other, two deer caught in headlights.

I shuffle my feet. (My fuzzy pink unicorn slippers scream “cozy grandma,” but at least my lip color screams “I’m trying.”)

“Hi Matt,” I try again, biting my lower lip.

“Hi,” he says, flashing a tight smile, his hands locked together.

Silence again.

Seconds stretch into an awkward eternity.

I look down at the floor to avoid eye contact.

So does he.

So much for all the emotional intimacy from the last six hangouts. Hollywood lied—there’s no romantic violin playing in the background.

And then, Matt abruptly moves. He rummages through his backpack, stands, and walks toward me.

“I got you somethin’.” He smiles, bashfully, holding out an adorable white and black polka-dot stuffed animal puppy, and a beautiful red box of chocolates.

Relief floods my chest. So sweet. Phew.

“Oh, Matt. Thank you.” I grin wide and clutch the puppy. “I’m naming him Fluffy.”

His eyes light up. “Remember when you asked me why everythin’ can’t just be puppies and butterflies? Well, here’s your puppy. God tells us He’ll give us joy, even in suffering.” He fumbles over his words, backing away from me and clasping his hands together again.

Silence.

Lara, change the energy. Say something.

“Did you notice, um, how I’m wearing makeup? First time in… Feels like I’m alive.”

“Yeah.” Liar. Guys never notice these things. “But you don’t need it.” Ooh, that’s kind.

“For the record, I’m not high-maintenance,” I tease. “You can take me out just for burritos sometime if I ever leave this dumb house.” Yeah, sure you’re not high-maintenance. That’s why you almost lost it at the thought that he showed up empty-handed.

He cocks his eyebrows. “You do realize you’re wrapped in a pink blanket with hearts on it. And pink slippers.” I look down as far as I can go. Touché. I can’t look down too far or my ear crystals will unlodge, causing a harder spin.

“Girly isn’t the same as high maintenance, Matt. And I’ll hurt you if you tease me again.”

“Ooh, I’m scared. You can barely walk.” He grins wide, taking his black jacket off. Ooh. Edgy, dry humor? Ice is broken? Wait… The guy can flirt? He never showed me this side in 2017. Hmm.

My eyes dart to his left ear, which is attracting my attention. Why does it pop out slightly more than the right one? Is it a strategic antenna for theological debates? It’s actually really…adorable?

In no time, the awkwardness fades into deep conversation. Debating theology. Suffering. Our safe space. Common ground. We share some chocolates, and the smooth, velvety chocolate melts on my tongue, balanced by the satisfying crunch of roasted almonds. I haven’t had chocolate in four years. Delicious.

Half an hour later, we’ve drifted to the dining room table, sitting next to each other at a close angle.

“Matt, I feel so abnormal. Do you ever feel that way?”

“Yeah. Like, why do I have to go through cancer twice? I’ve asked the Lord that a lot.”

“It must be so incredibly hard.”

He exhales. “Thanks. Small intestinal cancer is so rare that docs don’t understand it. They don’t even know how I got to Stage 4 so fast.”

“I can’t even imagine. Look at us Matt. This is so sad. We’re both grieving.”

“But we’re also comfortin’ each other. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted, right?”

His eyes brighten. “Here, let me show you somethin’.” He pulls out his laptop, flipping to a CAT scan of his intestines.

“See these big yellow cancer blobs? Three weeks later—before I had even started chemo for this cancer—gone. Miraculously. God can do anything. My docs were baffled. Gave me a chance to witness to one of ‘em actually. No idea if he took me seriously. Sometimes it’s in our greatest suffering that God gives us the best opportunities.”

Feeling stiff, I start rolling my shoulders and self-massaging my neck to ease my electrical nerve pain. When I grab the table to steady myself against a more acute vertigo wave, Matt’s chair scrapes against the floor.

In seconds, he’s behind my chair, his hands hovering near my neck. What is he—

His fingers suddenly press gently into my skin.

What on earth? Is Matt, the Godly, introverted PhD, actually massaging my neck and shoulders? In like a surprisingly suave kind of way? Plot twist I didn’t see coming.

“This is what we do in Haiti after long days,” Matt says. “A stress-relief line.”

Yeah…I’m sure you do… This feels a bit…scandalous? Wonderful? Did he just cross the “no more than hand holding” barrier? Whatever, at least we’re both more at ease now. Did he enroll in acting lessons lately?

He’s so mysterious and aloof sometimes that I can’t tell if he knows exactly what he’s doing or is clueless. He’s one of those intensely cerebral people who only say twenty percent of what they think, unless you explicitly ask or engage them.

Fifteen seconds tick by in silence, the gentle touch of his hands lingering. Say something, Lara. Anything.

I decide to sing softly, “My funny valentine, sweet comic valentine, you make me smile with my heart. Your looks are laughable, unphotographable, but you’re my favorite work of art.”

Matt chuckles as he massages. “Are you sayin’ I’m funny lookin’?”

“No, it’s a popular jazz standard. But I can tease you when I like.” We both giggle and the tension cracks again.

“So, uh, Matt…favorite animal?”

“Eagles. I was an Eagle Scout. They remind me of strength and courage.”

“Any others?”

“Hmm. Whales.”

“Why?”

“During my first cancer, I watched Free Willy obsessively, then the Make-A-Wish Foundation sent us to Alaska to see the whales after I healed.”

“Was it magical?”

“Yeah.”

“Favorite ice cream flavor?

“Mint chip.”

“Me too! Favorite color?”

“Blue.”

“Introvert or extrovert. What type?

“I’m type Matt.” Touché.

“Thing you hate?”

“Travel. The self-indulgent pictures, ‘luxury’ sights, airport lines.” He stops massaging and slides back into his chair.

“I love travel! Think history. Culinary and cultural delights! Okay, fine.” I roll my eyes. “Something weird about yourself?”

“My stubborn belief duct tape can solve anything.” He giggles.

“Favorite sport?”

His eyes narrow playfully. “This interrogation is worse than the first time I visited you on New Year’s.”

“When I get nervous, I go into lawyer mode. Lots of vicious questions.”

“I think you’re tamer than you think.” His eyes widen flirtatiously.

“But,” he adds, “badminton. Couldn’t run anymore after the first cancer because of back pain so I switched from soccer to the high school badminton team.”

Okay, Lara, bring out the big guns. He seems open. Let’s see what he’s got.

“Can I confess that a few years back, I thought it was sexy when you used Inspector Gadget as a metaphor in one of your Bible devotional videos?”

Sexy? Really? You literally just told the youth pastor he’s sexy? Does he even know that word? I think I meant attractive? Adorable? Either/or?

“That’s a weird thing…”

He flashes an awkward smile and his left ear—the one that adorably pops out—goes bright red instantly. After processing what I just said, his lips curve into a huge grin. “But I’ll take it.” Okay. Now I’ve warmed the guy up.

He cocks one eyebrow. “But you know, you should be focusin’ on the content of my devotionals.” He’s got sharp flirtatious instincts. Who knew?

“Don’t get smart with me. I can break up with you,” I reply.

Matt leans in, smirking. “We haven’t even started yet.” Ooh, Matt: 10. Lara: 10. Why is this so exhilarating? I can’t remember the last date who kept me on my toes. Wait, I can’t remember my last date, period. Ugh.

“Tell me something else I wouldn’t expect about you Matt.”

“Hmm, let’s see. In college, I survived on eight dollars a day for food, just to see if I could for three months. Wanted efficiency in my cookin’. And I made a California proposition analysis series using stick figure jokes and flowcharts. Non-partisan.” Oh my gosh, that big brain is just so…

“See? You were meant to be a lawyer or policy analyst,” I tease. “Anything else I wouldn’t expect?”

“I can sew.”

“Don’t tell me you’re on a competitive knitting team too?”

“Nope. Just patches. Things fall apart, I fix ‘em.”

“No Versace frontlines in your future?”

“Don’t know what that is. Been wearin’ the same suits for years. They fit just fine. But every Christmas, Mom insists on buying me the ‘trendy’ stuff.” So that finally explains why some of his outfits are meh, while some are at studmuffin level!

I turn to questions about his current job as a professor, shaping the minds of hundreds of students who go on to test blood in hospitals. He tells me about playing flute in the UCLA marching band and his experiences as a Christian camp counselor.

“So there I was,” Matt recalls, giggling, “in front of a room full of kids, explainin’ chemical reactions when—BOOM!—the beaker foamed over like a volcano. They went wild, cheerin’ like I was a science magician. I gave a little bow, secretly prayin’ the table wouldn’t catch fire. The kids clapped and shouted, ‘Do it again!’”

I smile, but the spinning and electrical pressure in my head overwhelm me. “Mind if we move to Mr. Couch now? Need to lie down soon. Feel really faint.”

“Sure thing.”

We get up and sit on the plush blue cushions side by side. A beautiful sunset paints a picture right outside the big windows. Hues of orange, red, and gold cut across the sky like an artist’s bold brushstrokes. We watch in silence, soaking it in. Good timing. My right hand inches toward the empty space between us, and the ghost of his touch lingers in the gap. The air feels charged between us, like something has shifted. Does he want to take my hand? I need… I want…

“After being stuck inside for so long, and with my eyes closed, seeing all this feels unreal,” I whisper. “The first time I saw myself in the mirror after everything… I bawled. My eyes are open now. Open! I know I’m spinning harder as a result, but I don’t have a choice. Whether I heal or not, I have to keep sitting up. But firecrackers are going off in my brain nonstop.”

“I know, Lara.” He slides an arm around me, as his other hand finds mine. Finally.

I feel so vulnerable. But so safe. Mr. Couch has become our sanctuary. A place of stolen moments. Giggles. Escapes. And now, he’s…holding me. In both arms.

“The sunset’s beautiful,” Matt whispers, his eyes on me now.

I meet his gaze. How come I never realized how handsome his almond shaped brown eyes are? I falter, unsure whether to look away.

He doesn’t look away.

Neither do I. This is so intense.

“You are too, Lara.”

My heart flips…fast. Did he just tell me I’m beautiful? Oh, when he says Lara in that deep voice…

“Thank you, Matt. I…” My voice wavers. “I’m so sorry I’m an angry basket-case of grief these days. Where’s old optimistic Lara? I’m still singing, but…pissy. I used to love the Lord so much.”

“I don’t see you as depressed. I see you as fightin’. For your health and life. And you’re still talkin’ to God.” I arch an eyebrow.

“Okay,” he adds, “maybe yellin’. But you haven’t lost your faith. You could have walked away by now. Strength isn’t measured by success; it’s measured by courage and perseverance in faith, even despite great testing.”

He sighs. “Look, maybe next time we can watch ten minutes of a terrible movie or eat yummy snacks. You know, normal people stuff. Whatever you can handle given the whole electrical wave sensitivity thing. Here, let’s pray.”

As Matt prays, the garage door rumbles open. Mom and Pops are home.

Matt’s arm instantly slips off me, and he stands, awkwardly rubbing the back of his head. “I should get goin’. You need rest.” He helps me stand and I grip onto him for balance against the turbulent shaking of the room.

Our eyes lock, and there it is again—an electric pull buzzing between us.

He leans in.

Close.

Maybe nine inches from my lips.

Then—he steps back, exhaling.

“I have surgery comin’ up. Let’s skip next week, so I can rest up, yeah?”

“Of course.”

He pulls me into a hug.

Neither of us let go.

I breathe in his scent—clean, fresh, familiar, comforting. A scent I’ve grown attached to. Almost an airy cologne but softer.

“What cologne do you wear, Matt?”

“Soap,” he says with a smirk.

“Cologne isn’t in your ideal bag of basic blessings?”

“You, my lady, should focus less on that bag thingy and more on the treasures you’ll hold in Heaven.” My lady? He’s giving off major British gentleman vibes which is so my gig as an Anglophile.

As Matt drives off in his car, the thought hits me. Am I going to die before this man visits me next? Every goodbye lately feels like the end of a season finale. “Tune in next week to see if Lara’s still alive!” Ugh, I hate this feeling that the clock is ticking, but no one will tell me how much time I have left. Lord, why that dream?

I shuffle to my room, catching Pops murmur a joke to Mom in the family room: “Those two are all well and good with their health issues, all they need now is a little romance and heartbreak.”

Heartbreak?

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Singing Through Fire?

Lara: This book was born out of survival. I have spent years living with severe chronic illness, and in the middle of the pain, the grief, and the absurdity of it all, I kept writing—sometimes in journals, sometimes in scraps of humor on social media, and sometimes in theological laments that felt more like court briefs against God. Eventually, I realized those fragments told a story: not just about suffering, but about the presence of God in the fire. Writing became a way to testify that even when life doesn’t make sense, God does not abandon us.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Lara: In one sense, it took eight years—the whole long season of illness, loss, and wrestling with God. But the actual manuscript took nine months of concentrated writing, written from my bed (I am still bedridden half of each day). Some days it poured out like confession; other days it was like chiseling granite with a spoon.

Q: What surprised you while writing this memoir?

Lara: I thought I was writing a book about pain, but what surprised me was how much laughter slipped in. Some of the hardest nights became the funniest stories on the page. I also discovered that my doubts and my faith weren’t enemies—they were dance partners. The wrestling didn’t weaken my belief in God; it deepened it.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Singing Through Fire?

Lara: One of my favorites is: “People keep telling me to live in the here and now rather than focus on Heaven. But when you’re grieving, eternity isn’t a far-off idea—it’s the only hope that helps you survive the flames you’re currently in.” That line captures the tension I lived—caught between present suffering and eternal hope.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from Singing Through Fire?

Lara:I hope readers walk away knowing they are not alone. Suffering often feels like exile—like everyone else got to stay in the land of the living while you’ve been shipped off to Babylon. But God walks into exile with us. My prayer is that people see that their story, however broken, is still part of God’s eternal story—and that even in the darkest seasons, there can be both laughter and joy. God calls us to have joy in grief. It’s all over the Bible, so let’s take this to heart! Sorrowful, but rejoicing!

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Lara: I’m a jazz singer and comedian. I grew up playing wacky roles in musicals and dramas and loved every moment. I’m an actor at heart. Performing is my first language of joy, and I still sneak it into my life whenever I can!

Q: What are you currently reading?

Lara: I am reading He is Faithful In Every Season by Julia Rose. It is an absolutely breathtaking collection of poems written by an incredibly talented Christian author. The artistic and Biblical messages in it have really encouraged me in this dark season of grief.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Lara: Autumn is my favorite—it feels like the world is exhaling. The pumpkin spice lattes are number one in my book! The air sharpens, the colors blaze, and even the leaves preach a sermon: you can let go of everything, place it in God’s hands, and trust that your story will be beautiful, even in the pain. Even in the change. Autumn reminds me that painful endings still carry their own kind of glory.

Excerpt

Some people believe children can’t be sociopaths. Kids are innocent, they say. If a kid commits a shocking crime, they say, it’s because of society. Or some glitch in their upbringing. Because warped brain chemistry in a kid isn’t possible.

Well, those people are wrong. My former friend Nel defied those misconceptions and then dared you to object.

In sixth grade, I caught my first glimpse of her cruel streak. She showed me a bruise on her upper arm. “My dad did it,” she said. Dark red and hard to miss, the bruise remained on proud display as if it were a new tattoo. Word got around, and CPS showed up at her door, questioned her dad, and placed Nel into foster care.

I missed her companionship, her brilliance. A light had gone out in the classroom. Her intellectual energy was the contagious kind, the kind that made the rest of us smarter too.

I went to her house and knocked.

When her mom answered, I jolted back a step. She looked ten years older. Red streaks marred her face, and she stared at me as if she didn’t know who I was. “Nel doesn’t live here anymore,” she snapped and started to shut the door.

“Wait!” I pleaded. “I want to talk to her.”

She gave a bitter laugh. “After what she did to her father and me?”

“I-I thought her dad—”

“She lied. She inflicted that bruise herself. She was mad because we took some of her privileges away after she deceived us. Forget her. Nel is a narcissist, and you’re better off without her in your life. Because if you ever get on her bad side, she will ruin you.”

About the Author

D.K. Till

D.K. Till writes Split-Time Fiction With A Twist, a blend of the dual timeline fiction she enjoys mixed with a big helping of the sci-fi she loved as a child. The indie author from the land of microbrews and coffee snobs fell in love with reading in kindergarten when her older sister taught her to read. She used to impress her parents’ friends by reading aloud the entire short story The One Hundred Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. In first grade, she knew she wanted to write stories, too. Throughout her childhood and teens, she either had her nose in a book or was attempting to write one.

But life got in the way, marriage and children set her dreams aside for higher purposes. Today, with children grown and enjoying retirement, she’s reopened that dream package and is now living the life she had only imagined.

The author is a huge fan of the Back to the Future trilogy, inspiring her to write time travel, too. Thus the Time Passengers series was born, perfect for fans of Back to the Future and The Terminator. A classic rock lover, she names her titles after hit rock songs of the 60s and 70s - Starry Starry Night, Midnight Rider, and Nights in White Satin.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Midnight Rider?

D.K.: As I was brainstorming ideas for Book 2 in my time travel series (Time Passengers), it occurred to me that I could write a whodunit and have it set in the future. I asked myself, what if someone invented a time machine and used it to make money by transporting current-day citizens to the future for a day? And then what if that very host got murdered once they arrived? The passengers would be stranded in an alien world with no way to get back! The more I thought about it, the more I knew I’d found a winning formula.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

D.K.: I started in August ’23 and sent it off to my editor in January ’25. About a year and a half.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

D.K.: How fun it is to think up pretend but realistic future technology. And to make it believable for the reader! (This was also true for Book 1, Starry Starry Night, a dual-timeline thriller.)

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Midnight Rider? How about a favorite scene?

D.K.: When the local media describes Coltrane McMurray, who built a time machine to transport paying customers into the future, they dub him “The Orville Wright of Time Travel.”

One of my favorite scenes is when the main characters discover they are stranded a hundred years in the future—for good this time. And they have no way to get home. Another favorite scene is when my main character, Thea, masters 22nd century technology in order to solve a murder.

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

D.K.: At the tender age of 6. I fell in love with books after my older sister taught me to read, and wondered if I could write a story as good as my favorites. I experimented off and on over the years, but was well into my fifties before I published my first book.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

D.K.: I raised my three sons mostly as a single mother, starting from when my oldest was six. They are all in their thirties now 😊 and I’m very proud of all three!

Q: What are you currently reading?

D.K.: A Million Little Choices by Tamera Alexander. So far, a great read. Her MC is the type of heroine I like to read and write about. Someone who didn’t necessarily choose the “traditional Christian” path of life. Her MC, Claire, is a successful interior designer, a career I once considered for myself. My own protagonist, Thea Daniels, is a journalist at a local newspaper, another career I’ve dabbled in.

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

D.K.: Psychological thrillers, such as books by Harlan Coben and Joy Fielding. I also like courtroom dramas. The Christian market seems a bit bereft of true psychological thriller novels. Steven James is one such author that comes to mind; also Brandilyn Collins and a handful of others. So that is a niche I’m hoping to fill with my time-travel thrillers.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

D.K.: I’m a puzzle fiend. I always have a jigsaw puzzle, sudoku, and crossword handy. Now that I’m retired, I have more time for them.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

D.K.: Here in Portland, no season is lovelier than spring. I always look forward to early March when we set our clocks forward and the daylight begins to linger in the evenings. Our lawns burst with vivid greens and roses sprout their colorful blooms. There’s a reason we’re known as the Rose City.

Excerpt from Love Between the Pages

“I’m glad you and Jayden find it funny to toy with an old lady’s heart.”

“You can’t take it personal. He and I are just friends, and we always will be. I don’t think I can imagine my life without him in it. He’s always been there. I’m not sure if there’s more I can ask for.”

Aunt Wanda threw both palms in the air, flipped them back and forth, then broke out into the hook of Beyoncé’s song, “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).” She swayed her hips and moved her shoulders to the rhythm.

Lisa doubled over in laughter. Tears sprang to her eyes. Aside from the fact that Aunt Wanda was moving just as well as the entertainer herself, the dance caught her off guard. Why did she leave her phone on the counter? This would have been the perfect moment to record her shenanigans.

Lisa regained her composure and played along. “You don’t think it’s weird for me to ask my best friend to put a ring on it?”

“Honey, I am sixty-five years old, which means that I’ve seen a lot in my day, including how you two act around each other and how you look at each other. I know love when I see it.” She shoved a hand into her hip as if to solidify her point.

Still kneeling next to the box, Lisa looked up at her. “Of course I love him. He’s my best friend, aside from Ginger.”

“Don’t go bringing Ginger into this. She’s come to her senses.”

“Maybe you should have this conversation with Jayden and see what he thinks about you trying to hook us up.”

“How do you know I haven’t? Maybe he’s waiting for you to be sure of him.”

Lisa’s breath caught, and her gaze stilled on her.

Is that true?

Author: DiAnn Mills
Publisher: Tyndale Fiction
Release Date: September 9, 2025
Genre: Romantic Mystery & Suspense

A rescue team searches for a missing young girl and suspects all is not as it seems in this high-stakes romantic suspense novel from the author of Lethal Standoff and Facing the Enemy.

When wilderness survival expert Therese Palmer receives a frantic phone call from former colleague Professor Rurik Ivanov, she is shocked by the news that his young daughter, Alina, is missing—and that Rurik wants Therese’s help finding her. She’s sure Rurik hasn’t given her the whole story . . . especially since he refuses to report the kidnapping to the police. Yet with a child’s life hanging in the balance, Therese can’t turn down this mission. She knows the clock is ticking and she can’t do this alone.

Therese reaches out to Texas Ranger Blane Gardner, whom she met seven months ago during one of her training courses in wilderness survival skills. Blane’s specialized training and background with the Crisis Negotiation Unit make him uniquely prepared for this search-and-rescue mission. He agrees to help Therese and to accept Rurik’s terms to keep Alina’s disappearance quiet, and as the two begin working together, Therese is determined the spark growing between them won’t distract from their mission to save Alina.

Traversing deep into the desert of Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Alina’s last known location, Therese and Blane struggle to separate truth from lies within the mix of intel they’re receiving. As they close in on answers that suggest the involvement of Russian organized crime and a high-profile international assassination attempt, they must fight to rescue Alina before she becomes an innocent casualty of a much bigger plot—no matter the risk to their own lives.

Excerpt

Alina suffering under the control of the monster who might have killed her mother caused me to forget all manner of good sense. How had the kidnappers navigated her to Dog Canyon? How had they raised and lowered her over steep inclines and slippery shale rock? With ropes? Carried her?

If I accepted the job, I needed a member of law enforcement whom I trusted . . . Someone wilderness-worthy with negotiation skills and able to expertly use a firearm without hesitation.

A man’s name held my attention. Seven months ago in Houston, I’d trained Texas Rangers on wilderness-survival skills through a four-day-long series of hands-on classes. One of the Rangers worked in the Crisis Negotiation Unit—CNT. A man I respected. He had a master’s degree in psychology and a reputation as a risk-taker. I needed a trained professional who put others first . . . providing he let me lead and give the orders.

Captain Blane Gardner.

I hesitated to call him. We’d gone out three times, and I enjoyed his company and commitment to the Texas Rangers. Then I invited him to church. He claimed he and God weren’t on speaking terms, so I ended the relationship. Although I’d made the right decision, several sleepless nights passed before I could push his pecan-colored eyes, thick red hair, and fit physique out of my heart. My pulse sped at the idea of spending hours alone with him in the wilderness, and the thought of putting myself through the emotional roller coaster again sent my pulse racing, but saving a child’s life took priority.

With thirty minutes before I had to leave to meet Professor Ivanov, I pulled up Blane’s contact info on my phone. Any other time, I’d have been considerate of the early hour, but not this morning. I pressed in the numbers, and a groggy man answered.
