Epic Book Launch: The Road to Chidarra by Keith B. Perrin

About the Book

Book: The Road to Chidarra
Author: Keith B. Perrin
Release Date: December 14, 2016

The Road to Chidarra, is a Christian fantasy novel based in an age when men worshipped at the altar of their cruel masters the gods, and feared the monsters and strange beings who plagued their lands with malice and terror. The cries of the people are heard, and a stranger is sent from afar to guide, protect, and bring peace to the lands. This however, comes at great cost, for the dark powers do not give in so easily, and the struggle for freedom as always, is paved with blood and sacrifice.

Book Excerpt

The figure rested for a few seconds, picked up the lantern, and slowly walked through the dark and damp crevice. Strange markings and symbols were visible but faded on the floor and walls by the dulling light of the lantern. Deeper and deeper, he went in the mountain before coming to a room that the lantern barely illuminates. More dust and grime covered symbols, and writings are seen on the walls, with carvings of strange beasts and faces of men from long ago. Putting the lantern up to the wall, the light reveals faded wall paintings of ancient kingdoms and battles that have now been forgotten, along with otherworldly creatures that would seem to be of one’s fantasy or dreams, if not nightmare, as if to issue a warning for those who come across them. The figure wipes away dust and grime from the paintings with his hand to see a scratched, tarnished mural that showed a fierce giant battling a lone warrior and celestial beings dwelling among the stars. The air became rank, and the figure decided to move on, looking for another path until he spied dust-covered stairs carved out of rock, spiraling upward.

Epic Book Launch: The Luck of the Draw by Kate Darroch

About the Book

Book: The Luck of the Draw

Author: Kate Darroch

Genre: Humorous British Detective Story

Release Date: August 9, 2024

Hunt’s back in court – as the defendant! Why is our suave hero in hot water? Can his friend and colleague Genie-Penny save him yet again? Will she want to? Or is Hunt playing a deep double game? Find out in The Luck of the Draw.

Book Excerpt

My use of her real name signals that the fun and games are over.

She puts her teacup down on its saucer, carefully, and swivels in my direction. She even stops typing. Whatever this is about, it’s serious.

“Sir NAME has an assignment for you, Hunt.”

Gina sees that I have opened my mouth to refuse, and hurries on, “Don’t bother saying that you won’t do it, Hunt. You know you’ll do whatever John asks you to do.”

Ask? John never asked me to do anything in his life. He orders, and I obey. Like everyone else in the known universe.

“So quit playing around.”

Gina turns back to her screen and starts typing again.

I could demur, but I won’t. Because she’s right. The reason I’m back in the IT department is that John came to Upper Shrewsbury for the express purpose of hauling me out of my local, The Bird in Nest (where I had been quietly enjoying a G&T when he appeared) and putting me to work. Nobody says ‘No’ to John. Not if they want to keep the use of their fingers.

Our Operations Controller rushes on, “It’s two weeks in Las Vegas, Hunt. Well, maybe a bit longer. You know you’ll have a wonderful time there.”

Book Excerpt

George sprang up. “The doctors said yesterday Papa had improved!” He bolted out the side door. Tears blurred his vision as he raced across the garden path under a pewter-gray dawn. Chilled March wind tore at his shirttail, biting his midriff and ears. Motion slowed, and sound grew distant. Surely this was only a nightmare! He was only vaguely aware Edward and the stooped old reverend galloped somewhere behind him like a panicked rear guard.

As he lunged up the kitchen steps, Edward’s wailing closed in, tugging him from the ragged dream. The door flung open and several teary servants fell in with the miserable entourage. The room was darker than usual. Colder. The young prince paused, catching his breath while his eyes adjusted. He shivered. The fire had burned low. In the dim light, Mama sat at the table before the hearth with her head buried in her arms. A forlorn lady-in-waiting wept softly nearby.

“Say it isn’t true, Mama!” he gasped, racing to her. She looked up dazedly. He saw her eyes, often red with allergies, swollen to slits. Fear squeezed him, forcing a gasp. She attempted a brave demeanor, stood to greet her sons, and smoothed her skirts over the forming lump in her stomach. Ignoring her delicate condition, George threw himself against her, weeping bitterly.

Epic Book Launch: The End Begins by Sara Davison

About the Book

Book Title: The End Begins
Author Name: Sara Davison
Genre: Dystopian Romantic Suspense
Release Date: July 15, 2024

Which of them is the prisoner and which one is free?

Bookstore owner Meryn O'Reilly and Army Captain Jesse Christensen are on opposite sides of a battle. After a series of terrorist attacks in 2053, martial law has been declared in Canada and the military has taken over. When a radical Christian group claims responsibility, Jesse and his platoon are sent to Meryn's city to keep an eye on the Christians and ensure they are not stepping outside the confines of the law.

Fiery and quick-tempered, Meryn chafes under the curfew and other restrictions to her freedom. Jesse is equally amused, intrigued, and terrified by her spirit, knowing she could end up in prison if she shows defiance to the wrong soldier, namely Lieutenant Gallagher.

Jesse watches out for Meryn when possible, although she wants nothing to do with him. His worst fears are realized when she commits a crime he cannot protect her from. Now they both face an uncertain future and the very real threat of losing everything, including their lives.

With time running out, Jesse works feverishly to convince the authorities to show leniency—and to convince Meryn that love can overcome any barrier that lies between them.

Book Excerpt

After the terrorist attack on the Toronto Stock Exchange in 2034, the Vancouver subway system in 2045, and the numerous cyber-attacks over the past two decades that had temporarily crippled the economy and life in general, the Canadian government had upped the military budget by billions and granted the armed forces much more far-reaching powers than they’d had in the country’s history.

For almost a decade now, since that last massive attack in ’45, the increased military presence had prevented any other large-scale strikes and lowered the crime rates in all the major cities in the country. It helped when the citizens—even those as young as Isaiah and his friends—respected the authority the armed forces now wielded.

The sound of haunting music drifted on the air behind him, and Jesse glanced across the street. A large mosque stood on the other side of the road, its rounded dome gleaming in the sunlight. Men streamed into the building, following the call to prayer playing over a speaker system, the words in Arabic.

A car had slowed behind his jeep and the driver was edging out a little, obviously tempted to maneuver her silver IONIQ around it, even though it was illegal to pass in a school zone.

Author Name: Kathleen Rouser

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: April 23, 2024

He’s a reporter determined to uncover the truth, but the secrets he finds could crush her family—and their second chance at love.

Taken from her family’s farm to be raised by her wealthy aunt and uncle, Nora Armstrong has accepted that not only will she never realize her dream of becoming a teacher, she’d also rather be a spinster than submit to her cruel aunt’s society selection of a suitable husband. The one man who caught her eye betrayed her best friend. And she’s got enough on her hands, hiding her sister’s shameful secret from her aunt.

When the local home for unwed mothers burns down, the arson investigation brings big-city reporter James Cooper back to Stone Creek—and back into Nora’s life. James also has a meddling aunt who raises more questions than she answers about his past. Not to mention, he can’t figure out why Nora constantly rebuffs him. When his reporting casts aspersions on the local church and lays the blame for the fire and a series of robberies at the wrong feet, he risks losing his new position at the paper.

As they seek to unravel the town’s mystery, rescue endangered mothers and children, and navigate their own family secrets forced to light, James and Nora increasingly turn to each other for help. But can they overcome James’s lack of faith and the disapproval of Nora’s guardians to find a second chance at love?

Book Excerpt

“Come on, Cooper, we need more hands,” Reverend Ian McCormick yelled. Soot streaked the minister’s face and white shirt. His nostrils flared. His expression dared James to take part in the rescue efforts.

“Right.” He ground his teeth. Helping put out the fire was, no doubt, the most important task. But did anyone in this sleepy town understand the importance of a reporter getting the news to its citizens as well? He removed his coat, throwing it onto the back of a wagon, and rolled up his sleeves.

“Let’s go. We need relief in the bucket brigade.” Ian turned to his wife. “Sophie, we have someone to take your place. The women need you.”

The bright blaze silhouetted a line of men from town. They pumped water from the well into buckets, passing them along toward the fire and doing their best to help beat back the flames. He took the spot Sophie left empty, taking a sloshing bucket from the local carpenter, Mack Frost, who already appeared weary. How long had they been working?

Smoke rose in an ominous cloud. When they tamped it in one place, the bright orange flames ate up the wood in another.

Book Excerpt

Swallowing the dread settling like a noose around my throat, I hurried out the door, ignoring the bustle of servants and the scents of the midday meal preparations. I tossed the cold ashes onto the heap outside the pig pen, barely hearing their grunts as they rooted in the mud. Heat warmed my shoulders and danced across my cheeks. I raised my face to the sun, longing for … what? Something elusive. Something I had no words to describe.

“Ah, there she is. The Red Bird of Paradise.”

My smile grew at the mention of my old nickname. Dear Matias. His white teeth flashed and he stopped next to the sty, taking a moment to wipe his stained shirtsleeve against his sweaty forehead. Gray peppered his springy curls.

“It’ll be a hot one today, eh, Red Bird?”

I nodded and smiled at the old nickname. Matias had called me Red Bird of Paradise ever since I had been brought to the island, declaring that my red hair reminded him of the tropical bloom. Only Molly and Master Cyrene remembered my real name. To everyone else, I was that girl.

I didn’t mind being invisible. Invisible was safe.

Book Excerpt

The drive home was less than ten minutes, but a pair of headlights had stayed behind her since she left the parking lot. She turned into her apartment complex. The headlights stuck with her. Heart pounding, she remembered reading a post on social media about situations like this. Instead of parking, she turned back around, headed to the closest police station, entered the lot, and honked.

An officer came out. “Ma’am, is there a problem?”

“Yeah, a car is following me.” She twisted in her seat to point it out, but it was, of course, gone.

He looked to where she pointed. “Stay here, ma’am.”

He walked to the curb, checked up and down the street, and came back. “Sorry, ma’am. I don’t see any car out there stopping or acting suspicious.”

The officer offered to escort her back to her apartment building. She accepted the offer. She knew the car was there. Or perhaps it was simply traveling in the same direction? But why follow her to her apartment complex? Then again, why would anyone follow her?

Book Excerpt

“Father, it’s time to order more hammers from the blacksmith,” she’d yell. Or, “Father, have we set aside the funds for the new shipment of lapis lazuli?”

And he’d watched her skills closely. She also kept watch over the employees to ensure no one was stealing from Badak, and she knew when to smile at an unhappy customer.

Though most girls Miu’s age were married by now and taking orders from their husbands, Miu lived at home with her father, mother, brother, and sister. She was a master accountant in her father’s jewelry business, a skill her father bragged to all his friends about. And because she didn’t find numbers difficult, it infuriated her that accounting was the reason her stingy father sent her to school in the first place.

Exhaustion and frustration crept in whenever he asked her to do anything. She dreamed of having her own business where she could keep track of the accounting for herself. Could she own a business where the numbers and accounting gave her the control to say who was hired when and what shipments would be sent off where? She had ideas and lots of them.

He awoke jailed in squalor…
Would he complete his final mission?
Or would he fail to record the story only he could tell?

The epic saga of the Last Disciple continues in this captivating Christian historical novel from Kurt Brouwer.

After surviving imprisonment, John faces his greatest challenge–exile in the distant city of Ephesus. Struggling with grief and despair over the destruction of Jerusalem, John doubts his ability to complete the mission entrusted to him by Mary—to write the true gospel account of Christ’s life.

But in Ephesus, John finds unexpected allies—Timothy, Priscilla, and Tychicus, who share his passion for spreading the message of God’s love.

As John shares the good news of Jesus, he makes dangerous enemies, including the influential high priest, Alexander Cosmo, who will stop at nothing to suppress the growing Christian faith. Amid opposition from without and internal divisions from within the early church, John must contend with those pressuring believers to adopt Jewish law and compromise the radical teachings of Christ.

Don’t miss this page-turning story of faith, courage, and love.

Book Excerpt

He remembered his shock and anger when the emperor’s son arrested him. He growled as he saw yet again that smirking, leering face mocking him. Remembered being bound in chains and marched off.

John suspected he’d been beaten at some point, for every rasping breath hurt, but he remembered little. Only disjointed images and mostly questions, nothing but unanswered questions. What happened to Bartholomew and Emmaus? Why had the emperor’s son arrested him? Why had General Titus and Queen Berenice left without him?

With those fruitless thoughts running through his mind, he slipped into a dull, restless slumber. After a time, he started out of a feverish sleep at the loud clanging of metal doors, followed by a sharp, inhuman scream. All sound around John ceased. He heard one more whimpering cry and, after that, nothing other than the breathing of many men and the gibbering of hungry rats.

John lay there, knowing nothing would come of fighting the cold iron chains. His head hurt and he could not seem to think, at least not in any sequence or order. He remembered the man who’d spoken earlier. He raised his head. “Eh, my friend. Dozed off. Any water here?”

Q&A with the Author

Q: Your logo and the cover of What Color is God’s Love? share an interesting flower. What is the name of that flower and what is its significance?

Xochitl: The flower on my logo and on the top corners of What Color is God’s Love? is called a Passion Flower. Darshika Varma surprised me and added the Passion Flower on the cover and in the book on the purple page. I mentioned it when we were in our first conversation. I didn’t ask her to add the flower. She added my heart to the illustrations, by listening to me and caring about what was important to me. You can feel her love and my love in this book.

I chose the Passion Flower as a part of my logo to symbolize a passion for Christ. You can find out why it’s my favorite flower, how God used and uses it to deepen my faith, and how the Passion Flower got its name, if you visit my website at www.xedixon.com and look under “The Passion Flower” page. It’s all about Jesus!

Q: What do you want kids to take away from your book?

Xochitl: For parents: I want kids to feel safe processing emotions in the constant presence of God, while using colors to remember biblical truth that affirms His unchanging character and His unconditional love flowing for them and through them.

For kids: God understands us and is always with us, using all the colors He made to remind us who He is, as He fills us with love so we can love others . . . together.

Book Excerpt

"How about a race to shore?"

As an answer, I dove off the platform.

Christ beat me, of course, and waited for me when I stood in the shallows.

"You can't hound us because we're in public." That was Rick Carlisle.

Chris and I turned to his voice.

Rick faced a man and woman near the concession stand, pure fury pulling his narrow, bearded face thinner.

"We're not hounding you." The man was tall with finely sculpted pecs and abs—so fine they looked inflated, as if he worked out for a hobby rather than worked hard for a living. His hair was cut so short it appeared painted on his skull. "Ashley wanted to see her kids. Public areas are the only places we can do that."

"Rick," Jason called, holding Sylvie as Alli and Richard towels into a canvas bag. "Let's just go." His voice sounded strained, like he was fighting a deep pain in his gut.

"We can't run every time they show up" Rick glared at the couple.

The woman—Ashley—stood huddled in a bright teal jacket as if the breeze blowing over the beach chilled her. She lifted her hand and waved, but I wasn't sure at whom.

"Looks like trouble," Chris whispered, and then he strode over to Jason.

She’s detached in a stormy marriage because of both of their unfaithfulness. Now she faces the aftermath of her compromise with an unwanted pregnancy. Will fleeing bring her the freedom she yearns for?

Emily Corentin wants to escape the jagged edges of her brokenness. She believes the only option she has is to take her young daughter, leave her husband, and end the unintended pregnancy with an abortion. But her plans take an unexpected turn when the homeless shelter she finds is not the type of help she wanted. She’d buried religion years ago with the death of her Gran. Any God-fearing place will only confirm how much God abandoned her.

An offer from a shelter volunteer may be the lifeline she and her daughter need, but Emily only sees it as a means to an end. The unlikely friendship that follows, draws her closer to the answers she may have carried with her all along. But rash decisions bring new challenges that drag her further into a sea of helplessness.

When all hope is lost in despair will she be washed away by the patterns of her past? Or will she answer the call to embrace the mercy of the cross and in turn bring reconciliation to her marriage?

Book Excerpt

I'd spent most of the night packing a few items into my backpack and forming a diminutive plan. Eric's blasting words had confirmed my choice to meet with Heather, an old friend from Prince of Wales, who had agreed to help me with Destiny without asking questions. Conveniently, she had no contact with Eric, so I wouldn’t have to worry about anything getting back to him. I would drop Destiny off with her, find a clinic to help me, and then file for divorce.

All Destiny and I needed to do was walk down the road a couple of miles. It was more than a little farther, as I'd led Destiny to believe, but it was our only hope for the day.

I picked up Destiny and carried her close to me as we neared a large flow of water from a melting snow pile. Winter in Anchorage seemed to last forever. I hadn’t expected the harshness it brought compared to the maritime climate of Southeast Alaska. Even though Anchorage was a coastal city, it still had temperatures well below freezing, and at one point, they'd dipped below zero Fahrenheit, which had been a new and bitter experience for me.

Book Excerpt

Because by Mo Willems

“In row C, seat 14—sat the girl with the uncle’s ticket. She heard the beautiful music written by the man named Franz—and it changed her.”

We should think about each other to see how we can encourage each other to show love and do good works. (Hebrews 10:24, ERV)

All of you together are the body of Christ.
Each one of you is a part of that body.

(1 Corinthians 12:27, ERV)

The Story: In this story a little girl winds up going to a symphony with her aunt because her uncle has a cold and can’t use his ticket. Each person in the story has an important role to play for all the “Becauses” to happen.

What would happen if someone did not do what they were supposed to do—what would happen if the helpers did not prepare the music hall? What would happen if the ushers didn’t open the doors? What would happen if the musicians didn’t practice? Each person has a job and a purpose in that job.

God works life out so that each person’s purpose helps to bring about His purposes. We each have a part in His plan. We each have a job to do. Someday we will see the “Because” in God’s plan too.

Matt Dixon has too much on his plate. He works as a financial analyst during the day while he goes to seminary at night. He also juggles an internship with his church to fulfill his dream of becoming a youth pastor. When he comes to the aid of his roommate’s ex, he never expects his life to go off the rails. Will he choose love for a woman over his dream?

Book Excerpt

“Her father, Kyle Jacobs, may pick her up sometimes. And possibly her aunt, Marcy Schaefer.” Kelly pulled up the contacts on her phone and jotted down their numbers.

“If anyone else needs to fill in, you or her father will need to notify us ahead of time.”

“Understood.”

The woman gave her a copy of the paperwork, which Kelly crammed into her large everyday canvas purse. She thanked her, then hugged Alana tightly. The sweet, un- mistakable bubblegum scent of her body wash lingered.

“I’ll be back at three. Or your daddy will pick you up at five if I can’t make it.”

“Love you, Mommy.”

“Love you, sweetie.”

Kelly waved as a worker introduced Alana to the other six-year-olds. Then she strode out to the parking lot and climbed into her car. Letting out a loud sigh, she rested her head on the steering wheel.

What had she been thinking, uprooting her life to move to Chandler, Arizona? It certainly seemed to make sense when Kyle suggested it a few weeks ago during a visit with Alana.

Yeah, that whole thing still felt weird. Her baby’s daddy, Kyle, had finally stepped up to be a father about a year ago after he found Jesus.

Book Excerpt

Dressed in a tailored white button-down shirt and black dress pants, his lean frame stretched a head taller than the other men. Jet black hair combed in a professional side part. Dark eyes that sparkled—whether from amusement or disdain, she wasn’t sure. And a serene expression showing no embarrassment at being gossiped about by strangers.

He drew a hand from the pocket of his slacks and held it out. “Let me introduce myself. Ryan Park. I prefer baseball over basketball. Eat way too much red meat and tend to be a little OCD about my office space. I'm the hotshot consultant. Although, I'm not sure I deserve the distinction. We'll see how good a job I do.”

The men cleared their throats in an awkward chorus. Feet shuffled as they shook his hand, one by one, their gazes not quite meeting his.

“No offense meant,” Willy mumbled as he tugged on his belt buckle.

“None taken.” The newcomer waved away the apology. “I'd be curious too.”

Curious couldn't begin to describe Katherine's emotions. She stared with her mouth open like a kid finding the deep-fried bubblegum stand at the state fair. Her feet moved forward without asking permission. She dashed to the group and stuck her hand out, the coffee cup still clasped in her other.

Small Town Danger Excerpt #4

She waved to a couple of the local fisherman heading out for their catches of the day and hit play on her phone. Soon, her favorite playlist blasted through the earbuds.

The chill in the air was exhilarating. She picked up speed and made sure her friend wasn’t overly taxed.

Most of the shops lining Main Street, which was called the boardwalk, were still closed at this time of the morning except for the Hopeful Coffeeshop. One of Janine’s favorite treats after running was a caramel latte. The owner loved Bailey and kept a supply of dog treats and a bowl for water behind the counter especially for the pug.

As Janine passed by the coffeeshop, the smell of fresh baked sweets was hard to resist. She’d stop by on the way home and maybe buy a Hopeful cinnamon roll, the coffee shop's flagship pastry.

Her favorite Christian song came up on the rotation. Janine pushed forward, empowered by the song’s strong faith message. She’d started jogging in college and had loved the feeling of freedom it gave her.

As one song turned into another, Janine reached the pier.

About the Author

Mary Alford grew up in a small Texas town famous for, well not much of anything really. Being the baby of the family and quite a bit younger than her two brothers and her sister, Mary had plenty of time to entertain herself. Making up stories seemed to come naturally to her.

As a preteen, Mary discovered Phyllis Whitney and Victoria Holt and knew instinctively that was what she wanted to do with her over-active imagination.

She wrote her first novel as a teen, (it’s tucked away somewhere never to see the light of day), but never really pursued her writing career seriously until a few years later, when she wrote her first inspirational romantic suspense and was hooked.

Today, Mary lives in Texas with her husband and loves to create characters who face dangerous situations with faith on their side.

Mary is very active online and would love to connect with readers on Facebook, Twitter, or any of the social media platforms listed at maryalford.net.
