Pausing, she nodded. “I appreciate that. I mean, this certainly isn’t how I envisioned becoming a mother. But God doesn’t always work things out the way we expect. What He does promise, though, is to work all things together for good to those who love Him. That’s what I’m clinging to, regardless of what anyone else thinks.”
“As it should be.” Meaning he needed to stop dwelling on what might have been and focus on being the friend she needed now.
Realizing it hadn’t thundered in a while, Gabriel moved to the door, shoved the peach-colored curtain out of the way and peered outside. “Looks like the storm has passed.” Sadly, Jillian was still caught in the throes of a different kind of storm.
He turned to face her. “I should go. We both need some rest.” And he needed to process. His gaze fell to Aggie sitting at Jillian’s feet. “I think she likes you.”
Jillian gave the dog a rub. “I’m growing rather fond of her, too.”
He opened the door. “Aggie, come.”
But the dog remained at Jillian’s side. Because whether she knew it or not, Jillian needed Aggie.
“How would you feel about letting her stay here tonight? She’s housebroken and generally sleeps through the night, so I don’t foresee her keeping you awake.”
Jillian scratched Aggie’s head. “I don’t know. What do you think, Aggie? Do you want to stay with me?”
The dog lay down on top of Jillian’s slipper-covered feet.
Gabriel smiled. “I think you have your answer.”
