Why are smoke detectors so loud?

Addie grabbed a dish towel, sprang onto a kitchen chair, and waved the white flag of surrender. The piercing scream ceased. Her cookies were burnt. She was well aware of that fact—her nose worked just fine. Did that annoying little thing have to announce it to the entire cape?

A thin gray haze remained.

She opened a window, then removed the charred hockey-puck shaped treats from the oven and set them on a hot pad on the kitchen island. With a frown, she poked one, but it was as unmoving as the Rock of Gibraltar and would probably break a tooth.

She leaned her elbows on the counter, hands cupped under her chin and stared at the tray of culinary casualties. Why is baking so difficult? I thought I followed the recipe.

She could put together an entire car engine in under twelve hours, but she couldn’t turn flour, sugar, butter, and salt into something delicious… or even edible.

Councilman Calloway stood beside Zeke’s elbow. “Why haven’t you closed the deal?” Calloway’s voice pushed out in a harsh rasp.

“Like I told you, he won’t meet with me.” Zeke eyed the dude and his chick again.

“It’s been two weeks now.”

“I know.” Every time he called the church, the old pastor put him off with one excuse or another. Wouldn’t even set up an appointment to meet with him. Zeke had burned up two round-trip tickets, trying to get the pastor to sign and return the retainer agreement. The clock was ticking. If the old man didn’t step forward and the property went back to the state, there was no way Calloway could get it at the cut-rate price they planned to chisel out of the pastor. It would go to the highest bidder at the auction.

“You told me not to worry, you could handle it.” Calloway cut Zeke a hard look. “I don’t know why I put up with you, Zeke.” He made a dismissive gesture with his hands. “You’ve always been soft and dense. Couldn’t take a few licks from your old man, couldn’t take a hit on the field, and you couldn’t find two thoughts to rub together if you tried.”

Suddenly Rural Girl JustRead Blog + Review Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for Suddenly Rural Girl by Dann and Kennedy Hurlbert, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Suddenly Rural Girl

Title: Suddenly Rural Girl: Facing Life, Death, Mean Girls, and Cute Boys in Rural America
Author:
Dann & Kennedy Hurlbert
Publisher:
Kirk House Publishers
Release Date:
February 1, 2024
Genre:
Young Adult & Middle Grade Contemporary Christian Fiction

After her dad is tragically killed, Dakota Moore’s mom moves her to northern Minnesota where Dak discovers an outcast classmate may be a reclusive miracle worker. She thinks she found him too late. The truth is, she met him just in time. Will Dak discover the miracle worker’s secrets before the next tragedy strikes?

Now, tucked into a secluded A-frame near a beaver-infested creek with her strong Sioux mom and her lisping little brother, Dak faces a new school and a trio of mean girls. Seemingly alone, she buries herself in a design app and self pity until an old blind man, his curly-haired horse named Eyeballs, a quirky dragon-doodling classmate, and a strawberry blonde with delicious sun-kissed freckles give her four reasons to keep on living. Then she decides to do more than just survive; Dak intends to thrive. When tragedy strikes again, she confronts the intriguing and repulsive miracle worker, but he doesn’t help their mutual friend. Learning why will change her life.

Suddenly Rural Girl is a friend and faith-finding journey, featuring a strong, female, multiracial protagonist and is loaded with laugh-out-loud characters and gorgeous northern Minnesota beauty. The magnificent landscapes haunt like William Kent Kreuger’s Ordinary Grace and This Tender Land, and the quick-witted dialogue is reminiscent of Jenny B. Jones’ There You’ll Find Me and In Between books. The combination makes it an excellent YA read with cross-over into Contemporary Christian audiences. The novel also has a companion study guide full of plot-related questions for classrooms and theme based discussion prompts for book groups!

THE QUARRY, CHAPTER 16

"Hey!!!" Someone yelled from the crowd down below. "You gonna jump or what?!"

"Yeah! Jump!" Another voice echoed. I scanned what had been a short line in front of us; the old couple, the college students, and the prepubescent girls must have already taken the leap. A few more voices eagerly picked up the chant.

"Jump! Jump! Jump!" the chorus and my uneasiness both crescendoed.

Liam looked me through the eyes. Not in the eyes, into my eyes, and then he asked sincerely, "You ready for this? ‘ Cuz you don't have to." I glanced briefly at Mary. She smiled and winked. Liam extended his hand, perhaps an offer to hold hands and jump with me?

"I got this," I said, turning away from Liam's hand and stepping toward the edge. If a girl's gonna make something of herself, she can't do it holding hands with some boy—no matter how cute he is. My stomach was a mess of nerves, eggs, and applesauce, but I wasn't going to be some damsel in distress with both Mary and Liam wondering if I needed saving. I curled my toes over the lip, offered a terrified smile to the chanting crowd, and pushed off. Almost as an afterthought, I started a quick prayer: Dear God, please—

Freefall is what happened next. The whole drop took less than two seconds, but I heard the crowd cheer in those two seconds. I counted no fewer than thirty-one innertubes on the lake. I saw Liam's blue eyes and freckled face in the back of my mind, and I decided I would let that boy kiss me someday. Then I heard Taylor yell, "Feet together, girl!!!" before jerking my knees and toes together.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write Suddenly Rural Girl?

"My English teacher gave us a writing prompt, so I wrote a one page short story about a scary day in the woods . . . and then asked my dad if we could turn it into a full book. My story became the first chapter of our book, and then we kept going from there!" --kennedy

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

"It took us about two years to write, but because of our busy schedules, we were mostly only able to write on Saturday mornings together. That became a neat routine. Kennedy and I would wake up early, go to a local coffee shop, and brainstorm, and research, write, and watch our story develop!" --dann

Q: What was the co-writing process like?

"I started with a lot of enthusiasm, but it was taking a lot longer than I thought. Plus, I had soccer and other activities some Saturdays, so my dad kept going when he had time. He'd ask me lots of questions about characters, and he'd ask me to write passages or letters between the two characters, while he kept the plot moving. Then he asked me to review all his writing--especially the texting, to be sure it sounded like something teens would say or text." --kennedy

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

"The research and writing was a lot of fun. We learned a bit more about horses, and Minnesota foliage and wildlife, and about how long and slow writing a full-length novel can be. But, I'm really glad Kennedy proposed the idea of working on it together. That, by itself, was really rewarding. We also learned a lot about things like Beta Readers, Publishers, Querying, and now we're learning more about the distribution and marketing process. Living is learning, and it's been a fun process . . .and I'll apply lots of what we learned to book #2!" --dann

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from Suddenly Rural Girl?

There are lots of great quotes in Suddenly Rural Girl. Here's one of our favorites from our protagonist, Dak:

"I got this,” I said, turning away from Liam’s hand and stepping toward the edge. If a girl’s gonna make something of herself, she can’t do it holding hands with some boy–no matter how cute he is."

Here's another quote about Dak's new neighbor, and the owner of the horse Dak begins to ride and care for:

George Washington Young was old, blind, and a pocketful of kindness. He was the kind of treasure you didn’t know you needed but can’t imagine living without. And it was all wrapped up in a pair of faded overalls and a smile.

Here's a quote that captures one of the themes in our novel, everyone carries some hidden struggle:

Taylor’s lips parted into a genuine smile, and the melancholy girl next to me was transformed into a beaming teenage girl—who was missing her front left tooth. My eyes shifted briefly to the small dark rectangle where the tooth should have been, and her wide grin immediately vanished. Taylor pulled in her thin lips, drawing them into a flat line where her smile had just been.

Aaaaannnd, there are some passages that we love, too! Here's one that carries the reader into some danger that Dak needs to overcome:

I had to give back. His dad helped me, and now his dad might be in trouble.

"Mary," I said firmly, turning Eyeballs toward her. "I need you to call the police. Tell them to head to the Redrickson house on Mill Creek Lane."

"OK."

"Then, can you run a couple miles back to my house?"

"Can I run a couple of miles?" She smiled like Joan of Arc. "I was born for this."

"I mean, can you find my house?"

She pointed. "That way, over the bridge, turn left." Then she realized what I was asking. "What are you going to do?"

"I'm going to help Jackson find his dad."

"Ok," she said, pulling her phone out of her pocket.

The sun was a sickle now, shaving the horizon, and I knew it would slip into the dark's sheath in no time. I also knew Mary could run like the wind, and she'd have no problem finding our house again. What I didn't know was how my horse would react to letting Jackson climb on his back—or if Jackson would be interested or able to. I leaned forward, clicked my tongue, and Eyeballs and I were galloping after Jackson.

And here's a favorite passage about Ms. Bousta, an important teacher Dak comes to appreciate:

Bousta's leg-sized arm shot forward and pointed toward the door. The flab under her arm swung like an oversized flesh cocoon. Without turning around, Ms. Bousta sweetly added, "Dakota, I'd like you to tippytoe along with us, too. I imagine Principal Arpan will be interested in hearing how your first day is going."

Sophia swung around on her heels and stormed out, exasperated.

"Ugggh!" She plowed between Makayla and Teagan, flicking her hands free of the remaining spuds.

Bousta quietly whispered "OK" to herself, relieved at having prevented a bigger scene. Then, she took a fateful step directly into Sophia's lunch.

What happened next can only be described as something between incredible contortion and amazing performance art: Ms. Bousta's size fifteen shoe slipped forward on the grease, leaving her enormous torso with nothing to support it. As her shoulders and head fell backward, she made a quarter turn and planted her right hand on the tile while simultaneously swinging her left leg over—spinning her chest-down in mid-air. But she didn't faceplant! She somehow tucked her head and left arm like a gymnast doing a roll onto her shoulders, flinging her legs above her head and into a spin like some helicopter move you'd see in a breakdancing movie! Her massive body rotated like a top three or four times on her upper shoulders before she kicked out of it, landing comfortably on the floor with one leg extended and one hand behind her head like a plus-plus-sized supermodel posing on the beach.

It happened in the blink of an eye. But no one blinked. Everyone in the lunchroom had just seen potatoes thrown at point-blank range miss their mark. Then they all witnessed Ms. Bousta flip what could have been a terrible flop into a legendary dance move.

"Whooo!" Ms. Bousta exclaimed after a shaky breath. "I haven't done that one in a while."

Laurel Blount

Genre: Inspirational Romance Amish

In this stirring Amish romance about love and second chances, a shunned man returns to protect the wife he left behind—and falls in love with the family he never knew he had.

Excerpt

The rosy-cheeked girl he’d married had turned into a woman. Rhoda’s features were sharper, and the innocent softness he remembered was gone.

Guilt rolled in Caleb’s chest. Their marriage hadn’t been kind to her. It hadn’t done him any favors, either. He’d hurt her by leaving. She’d hurt him by staying.

It had been a mistake, just walking in the bakery like this. The shock of being in the same room with Rhoda after all this time had hit him hard. He couldn’t seem to move or speak. He couldn’t do anything but stare at her.

She stared back, her face blank and stunned.

He should say something. The problem was, he had no idea what. He’d been driving all night, pushing past exhaustion with truck stop coffee and determination. All he’d wanted was to get here, see Rhoda face-to-face and reassure himself that she was all right, that Trevor hadn’t gotten to her first. He had no idea how he was going to explain this, no idea how to get her to listen to him.

All he could do right now was look at her. Because even with that new hardness in her face, when she’d gone white as a sheet, her brown eyes huge, Rhoda was still the prettiest woman he’d ever laid eyes on.

“Caleb?”

Hearing her whispering his name again cut at him.

Ja, it’s me, Rhoda.” It was the first time he’d spoken an entire sentence in Deutsch in a very long time.

Except, of course, in his dreams.

Author Interview with Laurel

Q: What was the inspiration behind Home From the Storm?

Laurel: What a great question! I think Home from the Storm was inspired by the ideas of love and forgiveness—and how those things might play out in difficult times.

We often hear that “love conquers all.” But does it really? For example, what happens when two very different people fall in love and get married in spite of their differences? And what if their “opposites attract” love is then further tested by a tragedy?

That’s what happened with Caleb and Rhoda Hochstedler in Home from the Storm. Caleb was the town troublemaker, always skirting the church rules, but he fell head over heels for Rhoda, the Amish bishop’s devout daughter. When Caleb’s parents were killed by an unstable Englischer, the church—and Rhoda—expected him to follow the guidelines of their faith and forgive. But forgiveness was the last thing on Caleb’s mind—he was determined to bring the killer to justice.

There’s no doubt these two young people love each other, but is that love strong enough to bridge the widening gap between them? Home from the Storm explores that question.

Q: How long did it take you to write this story?

Laurel: It’s always so hard to figure that up! My book writing is done in spurts—first I write the rough draft, then it goes through lots of edits and revisions—and often I’m also working on another book at the same time! My best estimate would be that I spent about seven months writing Home from the Storm.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Laurel: It’s hard to pick! But I do love the character of Abram, the new bishop of Johns Mill, and I especially love what he tells hard-headed Caleb at one point in the story:

“Gott has great need of such men as you, Caleb, given the world we live in. Men who stand up for what is right, no matter the personal cost. Men”— Abram winked—“who will guard the fences well. Of course, there is a cost. Such a man will have a hard time submitting his will, even to Gott. But . . .” The bishop leaned forward and tapped his finger on the desk, punctuating each word as he spoke it. “Submission. Is. Necessary.” He leaned back in his chair. “A man’s greatest strength is always also his greatest weakness. What Gott wishes to use for His purposes, the enemy will always try to turn to his own. It is up to you to prevent that by following the Lord as faithfully as you can.”

Q: What do you hope readers take away from Home From the Storm?

Laurel: This is a story about family and about forgiveness—and all the hard, gritty heart-work that requires. I think we all struggle with forgiving people who’ve hurt us, and I hope that seeing how Rhoda—and especially Caleb—work through their pain will spark some thoughts about how we deal with our own wounded relationships.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers would not know?

Laurel: Hmm—that’s a toughie! I love to share about my life, so if readers subscribe to my monthly newsletter (and I hope they do!) there’s probably not much they don’t know about me! But here’s something—my grandmother used to dance with Winnie the Pooh! She was from Cedartown, Georgia, the birthplace of Sterling Holloway. He was the original voice of Pooh, and when he and my grandmother were in their teens, they were both excellent dancers. She said there was never any romance between them, but they often paired up at parties because they danced so well together and they always had, as she put it, a “grand time.” As a little Winnie-the-Pooh loving girl, I loved listening to her stories!

Q: How long ago did you start writing?

Laurel: I’ve always loved to write, and as long as I can remember I’ve written stories. But I started writing professionally in 2015 when I sold my first inspirational romance, A Family for the Farmer, to Love Inspired.

Q: What is your favorite thing about being a writer?

Laurel: There are so many things I enjoy about this career! If I had to pick just one thing, I’d say it’s being a part of the writing community. Being able to spend so much time interacting with readers, other authors and editors—people who love books every bit as much as I do—that’s a dream come true for me and a privilege I don’t take for granted!

Q:  Do you prefer to read eBooks or physical copies?

Laurel: I love both! I love the feel of a “real” book in my hands, but I also love the convenience of eBooks. (My husband loves that I can fit thousands of eBooks on one small device—otherwise he’d spend all this time building me more bookcases!)

Q: How many bookcases are in your home?

Laurel: Eight very large ones! And they are all stuffed to the gills. I also have stacks of books on nightstands and end tables, a Kindle crammed with books and a very well used library card!

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Laurel: So many things! I love to cook, and I find baking bread particularly relaxing. I enjoy long, thoughtful talks with friends and family over cups of tea or coffee. And of course, I also love reading!! I’m never happier than when I have a good book to read, a hot cup of tea, and a friend to talk it over with!

Thanks so much for letting me visit with you today!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Q: What was the inspiration behind The Rancher’s Want Ad Mix-Up?

Megan: Several years ago, Love Inspired had a contest for stories, and I randomly thought of a historical idea where a woman arrived to be a teacher, but really the ad was for a bride. Then once I finished the story, I realized that I had drawn inspiration from my own mother-in-law. She was the one who wanted my husband and me to get together. Our long story short, my mother-in-law did some scheming of her own. Not sure it helped completely, but I am her daughter-in-law, so it didn’t hurt. 😊

Q: How long did it take you to write this story?

Megan: When the original story didn’t go to the final stage of the contest, I drug my feet on finishing it. It probably took about eight months. Then it sat on my computer for a couple of years before more edits were added.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Megan: Pretty much anytime the three brothers are talking, especially Wallie. My daughter is reading the book now, and she gave me her favorite of Wallie’s quotes so far:

Wallie squinted. “What’s an ally?”

“Friend, you goof.” Edward leaned over and scratched some bark off the nearest tree. “We can’t be friends, Miss Wagner. We’re brothers.”

“My brothers are my friends,” Della countered. “And they are friends with each other as well.”

“You have brothers?” Wallie’s eyes grew as large as the cinnamon rolls rising in the kitchen.

“Yes, I have three.” She patted the blanket, beckoning the boys to sit beside her. Youngest to oldest they obeyed, sitting on the far corners of the rugged blanket. It was a start.

Wallie crossed his legs and rested his elbows on his knees, chin in hands. “You don’t look like a sister.”

“Wallie’s right,” said Robert. “You’re too old.”

“Too old?” Della adjusted her skirt to make sure her ankles were covered. Maybe at twenty-four she was becoming an old maid, as Mother liked to remind her, but regardless of her age, she knew that politeness and manners were what she needed to teach the boys today. “Boys, it is never polite to tell a lady she is too old.”

“Well, ya are. You’re too old to be our sister.”

Q: What do you hope readers take away from The Rancher’s Want Ad Mix-Up?

Megan: So often we search for our identity in our jobs, spouse, and or kids. Della learns that God is the only one who can fill that hole we all have. Pleasing others shouldn’t be our life goal, but how we’re here to put God first in our lives.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers would not know?

Megan: I thought I would never write a historical book. Believed it would be too hard. Eventually, my husband’s love for history rubbed off on me, and I learned I really enjoyed antique shopping, which prompted additional research. Then God opened doors, and now The Rancher’s Want Ad Mix-up is my second published historical story.

Q: What are you reading now?

Megan: All That it Takes by Nicole Deese (An auto buy author for me.), The Next Worst Thing by Sarah Jane Woodley (A new-to-me author), Besting the Earl by Allie Kensington (A newer author), Point of Impact by Lisa Phillips (My mentor author at Sunrise Publishing)

(I usually have several books going at once. I tend to be an eclectic mood reader and also a big fan of kindle unlimited.)

Q: How many bookcases are in your home?

Megan: I’m sad to say only like three small ones. Recently, four of our bookshelves decided to no longer hold things. So, we have a fair share of books stacked in closets and nestled in Rubbermaid tubs in our basement. But one day, I have high hopes of having an entire wall of bookcases.

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Megan: I’m usually taking care of my family or doing something with them. We like to play board games or activities outside like mushroom hunting, camping, or even kickball. But if I have a free moment to myself, I like to sit on my front porch and read.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Following the Evidence
Title: Following the Evidence
Author: Lynn Shannon
Publisher: Love Inspired Suspense
Release Date: July 7, 2020
Genre: Inspirational Romantic Suspense

Bringing a tracking dog to town
put her in a killer’s sights

Inheriting a ranch is a fresh start for Emma Pierce, her baby and her search-and-rescue dog—until someone tries to kill her. But Sheriff Reed Atkinson won’t let anyone hurt his first love…especially when they uncover a connection to his vanished sister.

Can Reed solve both cases before he loses his sister and the woman he’s falling for all over again?

EXCERPT

Beyond the windshield, Emma could see the lights of her home winking through the trees. Her daughter would be asleep now, nestled in her bed, along with her stuffed lamb. Should they leave town? Abandon Helping Paws? The idea was gut-wrenching but there was more to consider than just herself. She had a daughter to protect.

Lord, please give me strength and guidance. Tell me what I’m supposed to do.

Reed squeezed her hand and she interlocked her fingers with his. A simple gesture and yet it brought her comfort. She wasn’t in this alone.

Have faith. It was easy during good times. So much harder in the darker ones. Life was testing her, throwing curveballs she hadn’t expected, but Emma had moved to Heyworth for a reason. She believed God was leading her. Maybe, just maybe, He’d sent Reed to help her through it.
The headlights picked up an object sailing through the night. It landed on the road in front of them. Emma blinked. Was that...a grenade?

“Reed!” she shouted.

He swerved. Emma’s head slammed into the side of the SUV. A bright light preceded the sound of exploding glass. Then they were tumbling over and over.

Everything went black.

Book Spotlight & Giveaway: Border Breach by Darlene L. Turner

Border Breach JustRead Blog Tour
Welcome to the Blog Tour and Giveaway for Border Breach by Darlene L. Turner, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Border Breach Title: Border Breach
Author: Darlene L. Turner
Publisher: Love Inspired Suspense
Release Date: April 1, 2020
Genre: Inspirational Romantic Suspense

When drugs are smuggled across the border
it’s their duty to stop the culprits…at any cost.

Forming a joint task force, Canada border officer Kaylin Poirier and police constable Hudson Steeves have one objective: take down a drug-smuggling ring trying to sell a new lethal product. But when the smugglers come after Kaylin and Hudson, this mission becomes more than just a job. Can they live long enough to solve the case?

EXCERPT

Officer Kaylin Poirier’s stomach lurched at the sight of the two people inside a white florist van that pulled up to her booth at the Windsor-Detroit border. The driver wouldn’t meet her gaze and his passenger couldn’t sit still. Their body language elevated her guard. Could it simply be her overactive imagination or perhaps the humid weather putting her in a foul mood? Experience said there was more to it. This was her job, to protect the border and catch criminals illegally importing goods into Canada—whether it be drugs, weapons or immigrants. Today was no different.

Actually, today was different. Security at the border had been tightened by her father, Chief of Police Marshall Poirier. “We will find every drug smuggler and stop them before they can enter Canada. My daughter will make sure of it,” he’d said at a joint television press conference earlier in the morning.

She winced at the memory of his firm grip on her arm and commanding voice as he spoke. He’d vowed to clear his city of drugs after numerous gangs had terrorized the community with deadly narcotics. Too many teens had died in the past two months.

And he expected her to get the job done.

No pressure.

EXCERPT

While Andrew counted and concentrated, Clara moved to the music, letting the melody carry her to a different time, a different era. A time when life was slower, people had their license plates and names listed in a book, and young women spent time at windows dreaming of a life they didn’t yet have.

Clara pictured herself at a ball in Brazil, wearing an old-Hollywood gown, and dancing like her grandmother had. She was certain her upper body positioning was a mess, but that didn’t matter. Not now. She wouldn’t hold back on the fun because of what she didn’t yet know about the waltz. She was just going to dance.

Title: Fate of the Redeemed
Series: Journey of Fate #2
Author: Chad Pettit
Publisher: Ambassador International
Release Date: October 1, 2019
Genre: Suspense Fantasy

Lester Sharp has been given a second chance to live a life of compassion, but his decision to follow God will be tested when his estranged father calls to tell him his brother has been killed in combat. As Morane’s fury is unleashed, time is running out for Lester, and Draven’s fate is in the hands of a man whose faith is being pushed to the limit.

EXCERPT

Town of Olympia, Eastern United States

The watcher stood silently, enshrouded by the ageless camouflage of the spirit realm. It is the place of no place, a tangible reality only to the immortal and supernatural players on a timeless battlefield for the souls of mankind. It is where “bumps in the night” are born, where unanticipated tempests of raging lightning and rain lash out on a fallen Earth as the elemental warriors dance their cosmic melee of undying death.

The watcher smiled. Comfortably. Peacefully. Transitioning from his human form of dark skin and long dreadlocks, he kept his immortal gaze fixed on the quiet house, which he had just left and where a newly reformed soul now comforted a man snatched from the claws of death. A single light in the living room of the house remained on, its faint yellow glow piercing the night like a beacon atop a lone lighthouse faithfully guiding lost ships to its reassuring shores.

He sighed and let down his guard to complete the transition.

Dark brown, sinewy arms began to turn into thicker, but still slender, arms that blended into the shades of myriad colors surrounding him. He shifted his attention to this, enjoying the spell of the ever-changing skin tones. Dark green and shadow like the grass at his feet. Yellow, glowing like the light from the house. He turned his hand so the palm was facing him and wiggled his fingers in order to watch them rapidly change between the mixtures of color and light.

His pleasure at the sight was intense but unmatched by the elation of the night’s victory. Centuries behind this invisible curtain, decade after decade watching unaware mortals go through their endless loop of birth and death, killing and being killed, starving and warring. Years passed like seconds to Draven, the watcher for so long, but tonight had been different. He had been allowed to go to one of them, to show his power in the presence of a mortal and be a part of the reclamation of a soul.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Chad Petitt

Chad Pettit grew up lost in the world of fantasy fiction but alienated from a knowledge of God. With no real direction in his life, he shipped out for basic training twelve days after high school. He continued down a path of sin and destruction through two combat tours to Iraq, but then God pulled back the blinders, and he met his Lord and Savior. One passion that never left him was his love for fiction, and in 2013 he went back to school and earned his degree in English. This helped him develop his craft, spending long hours pounding away at the keys until his battles with guilt, fear, and shame came alive on the page.

EXCERPT

The hair on Kara Nelson’s neck prickled as she sat behind the wheel of her car parked near the Miami Beach Marina. Something wasn’t right. If she’d been made...She flung the door open and ran.

A boom sounded, and heat stung her back. Running full speed, Kara tripped and flew through the air, hitting the pavement hard. Her hands smacked the ground first, and she flipped, her legs whipping over her head. She lay face up in the parking lot. Searing pain tore through her wrists, arms, shoulders, and neck.

A second explosion sent a ball of fire into the mid-morning air. Kara covered her head as debris smacked the ground around her. She lifted her head with effort, first looking at her dismantled undercover car then back at the marina. Drug lord, Luis Alvarado’s yacht had moved out to sea and with it, her chances of wrapping up a year-long investigation. Where had the second blast come from? She struggled to sit up. Then the world went black.
