Book Spotlight: A Brewed Awakening by Pepper Basham

A Brewed Awakening JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for A Brewed Awakening by Pepper Basham, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

A Brewed Awakening

Title: A Brewed Awakening
Author: Pepper Basham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: May 5, 2026
Genre: Small Town Contemporary Romance

Daphne dreams of Mr. Darcy. Finn serves up pints and rock music. Can opposites attract when a tea shop princess meets her pub-owning rival?

In the charming mountain town of Wisteria, North Carolina, Daphne Austen clings to tradition like cream to a scone. She's built her life--and her late grandmother's tearoom, Tea Thyme--around all things English: delicate china, Jane Austen novels, and the comforting predictability of routine. The only thing threatening her perfectly ordered world? The loud, aggravatingly handsome Brit opening a pub next door.

After his ex-wife broke his heart and his business partner nearly destroyed his career, Finn Dashwood packed up his six-year-old daughter and left England behind. He's looking for a fresh start, and the last thing he needs is a fussy, tea-obsessed neighbor criticizing his every pint and playlist. It doesn't matter that she's ridiculously kind (to everyone else) and that his daughter is utterly fascinated by her. Finn's heart is not open to being broken again.

But disagreements turn into prank wars and then a competition when a high-profile wedding needs a last-minute caterer. The townsfolk are thrilled--Wisteria hasn't seen this much excitement since the county fair lost a goat.

When the wedding demands both sweet and savory fare, Daphne and Finn are forced to put down their swords and pick up their serving trays. Between burnt pastries, brewing tempers, trending hashtags (#SipsAndSpats, anyone?), and one very adorable little girl, rivalry soon gives way to reluctant friendship--and maybe something that feels suspiciously like chemistry.

Can a tea shop princess and a pub owner with a past mix their lives as seamlessly as clotted cream and jam . . . or will their differences keep them steeped in rivalry forever?

Book Excerpt

The knowledge shot a direct line to his heart, propelling him to lose all sense and ask, “Would you like some . . . tea?”

She nearly choked down a swallow and turned to take a drink of water before looking back at him, a soft smile playing over her lips. “Do you actually know how to make superior leaf water?”

Her exaggeration pulled another smile from him. Their eyes met. Held.

And stuck.

He cleared his throat, turning back to the stove, grabbing the pot of oatmeal as an excuse to move. What was going on with him?

“Making tea and liking it are two very different things.”

“Actually, if you like it, you make it better.” She pointed her half-eaten toast at him like a culinary wand. “It’s science. Or magic. Or some equally inconvenient truth.”

He placed the oatmeal between their plates on the table and remained standing next to Daphne. “You’re calling me inconvenient?”

“Oh, definitely.” Her grin sharpened, eyes dancing. “And possibly a breakfast saboteur. This is a trap, isn’t it? You’re trying to sabotage my confidence before the wedding showdown. Undermine my competitive spirit with . . . delicious carbs.”

Good, the banter was back. Preferable. More manageable.

“Guilty.” He gestured toward the table. “Clearly, I’m superior.”

“Hardly.” She scoffed and crossed her arms. “This is a one-off miracle. No one should trust the culinary instincts of a man who thinks gas station coffee is a valid life choice.”

He chuckled, but it wasn’t the charming, calculated kind. It was real.

And it felt good to be…real with her. He gave his head a shake.

There she went again.

Slipping beneath his defenses like she’d done last night with that talk of food and grandmothers. Authentic. Unfiltered. And for some reason . . . more dangerous than flirting.

“Food can be terribly persuasive, Ms. Austen.” He leaned a little closer. “I might just win you over with it.”

She rolled her eyes in a way that should have been ridiculous. It wasn’t. It was unfairly charming.

Her grin tugged up at one corner like she enjoyed their back-and-forth just as much as he did.

Too much.

Like a daily dose of something he didn’t know he was craving.

Like something he might not want to live without.

He tried to shake it off. Keep things simple. Light. Like the past relationships.

Kiss and leave.

His gaze dipped to her mouth.

Right.

That’s all.

“Sweetness can be powerful, Mr. Perfect Teeth,” she corrected, lifting an eyebrow. “Doesn’t mean the rest of your cooking is.”

“Mr. Perfect Teeth?” He blinked. “That’s the best you’ve got?”

“I was taught to be nice, not just play nice.” That soft southern drawl wrapped around her declaration and tugged at something inside him.

He should’ve backed off. Thrown a joke in. Flirted just enough to cover the fact that she was getting under his skin in a way no one else had in a long time.

But she was standing so close, and her gaze kept flickering like she didn’t want to look—and couldn’t quite help herself.

That’s when the real trouble began.

“What’s wrong with both?” he asked, his voice lower now. “A little fun, a little . . . sweetness, all rolled into one?”

She snorted, even as her gaze drifted slowly down his frame and then locked with his again. And lingered.

His skin prickled with a sudden need.

“Fun, maybe,” she said softly. “But sweet is not a word I’d use to describe you.”

“No?” He stepped in. Just close enough to make her eyes widen slightly. “And how would you describe me?”

She hesitated, her attention snagged at the corner of his mouth—where a little smirk tugged, daring her.

“Dangerous,” she whispered.

The way she said it—barely there, barely brave—sucker punched him.

Because it wasn’t flirtation. It was a truth she hadn’t meant to say out loud.

And suddenly, he wanted to prove her wrong. Show her that there was more to him than cocky grins and casual charm. Once, he’d been the kind of man who knew how to love fully, without hesitation. And look where that had gotten him.

“Dangerous?” His voice dropped, the air between them shrinking by inches. His pulse spiked as his gaze roamed her face, drawn in by those too-perceptive eyes. “I’m not the one who’s dangerous, Daphne.”

Her brow furrowed. “I don’t . . .”

“Genuine kindness,” he said, voice rough, “is dangerous too. It makes people hope for things they shouldn’t. For things they can’t repay.”

She needed a boyfriend. AI came to her rescue. But then her fake boyfriend showed up at school.

Brielle has never wanted a boyfriend. She's happy with her book boyfriends--purely fictional, right? Easy to maintain. She's also not a huge fan of sports, except baseball. Not playing it. No. Again, books and cozy afternoons are her thing. But Brielle can get into baseball with the best of them when it comes to watching, repeating stats, and wearing her favorite jerseys. But apparently, that's not enough in life. At least according to her four nosy aunts, who all think she needs a boyfriend, people at school who are convinced Brielle is a closet serial killer because she's happier with her books, and yeah. Valentine’s Day is on the calendar.

There is a purpose for AI, and Brielle decides the genius thing to do is make a fake boyfriend. Complete with deepfake photos, Brielle creates the perfect boyfriend, and no one needs to know he's entirely fictional. They just need to believe she met him over summer vacation, and he lives somewhere in North Carolina. Only he doesn't. When baseball catcher, Brooks Mason shows up at high school, a lookalike to Brielle's AI boyfriend, her entire world becomes a dog-eared, bent pages book nightmare.

Brooks is getting sick of all the girls at school wanting to date him. He wants to play ball and hang out. So, yeah. It makes sense to help Brielle out. Fake date? Why not? But once together, dating for show becomes an act that both Brielle and Brooks aren't quite prepared for, and dealing with unexpected attraction, complicated situations, and interfering aunts and bffs?

It's a grand slam of problems just waiting to happen, plus a game-changing shot at a championship home run at love.

Excerpt from Love and Baseball

It would totally get my besties off my back and satisfy their crazy need to see me with a boyfriend. And why is that? Why do girls have to have boyfriends to achieve some level of popularity? Or maybe it’s me. Maybe I was born without that part of the brain—or heart—that went “omigosh, I need a boyfriend!” Bruh. Seriously.

Anyway. I came up with the best idea—I thought—ever. So when my family and I went on vacation, I came home with a long-distance boyfriend. He was totally fake, of course. I made him up. He didn’t exist except in my imagination and on my Pinterest board. Which, by the way, can give a girl all sorts of ideas if you need to create your own fake boyfriend.

So yeah. That’s what I did. I named him and everything. His name was Brooks. He was going to be a junior in the fall. He was a catcher on his high school baseball team—I threw that in because I knew a lot about baseball since my older brother Reece was the captain of his team, and it sounded cool.

My friends wanted to see pictures. Enter deepfake photos. They’re real, y’all, and they work. So don’t do it. Because, yeah. Then the worst happened.

Partway through the school year, he showed up. Yep. My fake boyfriend, Brooks, waltzed into my school. He’d just moved into the area from Minnesota, had left his position as catcher of his baseball team, and was the spitting image of my AI-generated photos. If weird happens, then it happens to me. But this was above and beyond weird. Because the day Brooks stepped into my high school was the day my world turned upside down.

But his did too.

At least, that’s what I’ve been told.

The Cinderella Plot

Title: The Cinderella Plot
Author:

Release Date:
March 19, 2026
Genre:
Young Adult Romantic Comedy

Paisley Harper is invisible.

Not in a superpower way. More like the people-look-right-through-you-in-the-hallway kind of way.

She’s the girl with the oversized cardigan, random book knowledge, and the uncanny ability to tutor the school’s star quarterback without actually being seen as anything more than helpful. Meanwhile, her aunt and uncle’s beloved small-town bookstore is under threat from a shiny corporate chain, her best friend keeps giving her looks that feel suspiciously loaded, and Homecoming is looming like a glittery reminder that senior year is running out…and she’s never been kissed.

Enter The Cinderella Plot—a wildly popular self-help book promising total transformation in five easy steps. New hair. New confidence. New life. Maybe even… a date.

With nothing to lose (except her dignity), Paisley decides to follow the plan. Because if fairy tales have taught her anything, it’s that invisible girls don’t get happy endings unless they change something first.

But as Paisley starts stepping into the spotlight, she has to ask herself an important question:

What if being seen comes at the cost of being herself

Full of heart, humor, bookish charm, and small-town magic, The Cinderella Plot is a romcom about friendship, first love, faith, and discovering that sometimes the greatest transformation isn’t becoming someone new—it’s realizing you were worthy all along.

Excerpt from The Cinderella Plot

It’s Homecoming Week, which means Spirit Days—a torture device designed by extroverts to terrify introverts on a daily basis by drawing attention to them through costumes. Jokes on them, though. They underestimate nerd-love of dressing up, which is definitely in my favor, because the fashion rules are not only spelled out but eccentric.

Monday: Favorite book/movie character day.

I don’t know how this is related to school spirit, but I’m totally here for it. Go Jayhawks!

With my blue 1930s-style dress (courtesy of Aunt Diane’s thrift shop expertise) hitting just below my knee, cinched at the waist with a thin belt, my hair straightened and flipped out at the ends—as close to classic Nancy Drew as I could manage without a time machine—and a magnifying glass tucked in my belt, I’m not only ready for Spirit Day.

I’m ready for crime-solving.

Which is an important factor this week.

But as I walk toward my locker, I stop dead.

Standing in front of it is Chris.

But not like I’ve ever seen him before.

Ever.

I almost whimper.

He’s full-on Regency. Complete with the long coat, vest, the works.

My poor little heart takes off on a marathon I was not prepared to run. He looks amazing, and he even styled his hair. I am so not prepared!

Chris looks up from his phone, a slow grin spreading across his face as he sees me and my knees make jelly seem sturdy. Forget about feet sweating. My whole body just erupted!

“Nancy Drew?”

Who? I blink and then look down at my outfit. Right. Me.

Of course he’d know. Because he knows me.

I’m still trying to find my voice beneath complete air-loss. Wow. He looks fantastic.

Dashing, even.

Last time I’d seen him he was loopy and drooling on a pillow. This is…different.

“Yeah.” I manage.

“Need a Watson?”

Dear heavens, I nearly melt to the floor on the spot. Who knew this Chris was hiding behind my best friend Chris? How did I not... How...

Clearly, my brain capacity was going the way of my oxygen supply.

“Wrong detective.” I gesture to where Molly is posing for photos in her own sleuthing costume, hoping my voice isn’t as high-pitched as it sounds to my ears. “And I think Watson’s already taken.”

“Fair enough.” He’s still smiling, gaze searching my face. Is there something different in those eyes? “Well, if you need backup on your case, Nancy... I’m around.”

Was he…flirting? Because, I didn’t come prepared for that today. Or ever.

“I would love that.”

Major fail. Still high-pitched. Cinderella’s mice have nothing on me.

I clear my throat. “But... we’ll have to time travel, because you’re—” I wave toward his ensemble and check him out all over again. “Mr. Darcy?”

“Knightley, actually.”

And there goes my airflow again. “Mr. Knightley?” I squeak.

“Yeah, I like him better than Darcy. He’s more my kind of guy.”

My mind stutters to a complete stop. How have we never talked about Austen before? Disney princesses? Yes. Star Wars? Yes. Lord of the Rings? Of course. But not Austen.

I feel as though I need to encourage this on a regular, self-torture-style basis.

Though it tracks. Totally. He is more of a Mr. Knightley than a Mr. Darcy.

My silence must push him to clarify. “Don’t get me wrong, Darcy’s great and all. But Mr. Knightley? He’s underrated.”

Book Spotlight: Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham

Sense and Suitability Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Sense and Suitability

Title: Sense and Suitability
Author: Pepper Basham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: September 23, 2025
Genre: Clean Regency Romance (Rom-Com)

In this clean Regency romance, a woman with a scandalous past (and an even more scandalous secret) swears off love--until the man who broke her heart needs her help. What could possibly go wrong?

After two failed social seasons, her family may think the third time will be a charm, but Emmeline Lockhart just wants to survive with her dignity (and singleness) intact. She thought she'd found her perfect match in Simon Reeves--charming, handsome, a veritable hero from a novel--until he vanished from her life without so much as a "farewell" or "my deepest regrets" (or even a vague apology scribbled on the back of a calling card). Lesson learned: never fall for a man known for his charm.

Fortunately, and unlike many of the other eligible young ladies of the ton, Emmeline has no need for a husband--because she's already found success in her scandalous (and very anonymous) profession as an author. Why bother with matrimony when she can make her own fortune and write men exactly the way she wants them?

But fate--or the misfortune of Simon's reckless patriarchs--has other plans. Simon's once-proud estate is in shambles, his family fortune has been gambled away, and the younger impressionable siblings in his care are running wild across his estate (and possibly across all of England). Simon is in desperate need of a wealthy, prestigious bride . . . and a friend.

Emmeline may not fit the role of heiress, but she can certainly be a friend. Just a friend. She'll help him find a suitable match, ensure his reputation remains intact, and keep things strictly platonic--no matter how dangerously appealing his new-and-improved sincerity and regret may be.

There's just one small problem: the undeniable chemistry that still smolders between them. Can Emme play matchmaker for the man she's still in love with without losing her heart all over again? And is it possible that some love stories--especially the messy, inconvenient, impossible ones--are worthy of a rewrite?

Excerpt from Sense and Suitability

Their first meeting had been during the height of Miss Willow’s debut ball, when the aforementioned lady had pursued him into the garden, only for him to trip—quite literally—into Emme’s hiding place behind a hedgerow. She, of course, had been evading the boorish attentions of an inebriated Mr. Douglas Clyde.

For some reason, when he’d literally knocked her to the ground, Simon refused to leave her side, despite her assurances and a few scathing glances from Miss Willow. At the time, the last thing she’d wanted was the attention of the notorious flirt but one dance and conversation after another, Simon Reeves had begun to change in her eyes.

From stranger to one of the dearest men of her acquaintance.

Or had appeared to.

And then . . . he’d left without as much as a word of explanation.

For almost two years.

A man who could find his way into any number of drawing rooms, ballrooms, or gambling halls surely could have found a pen and paper, could he not?

Her spine straightened, her resolve hardening. “Well,” she said. “In the future, would you be so kind as to locate your own hiding spot and leave me and my”—her finger flicked toward her face, cheeks blazing—“lips alone?”

His brows shot up, and his gaze dipped to her lips, lingering there far too long. The tingling warmth that followed infuriated, and to be perfectly honest, fascinated her.

“I’ve heard where you and your lips have been over the past two years and I’m not interested in . . . in . . .” Her face exploded with warmth. What was she even saying? “The shared experience.”

Her words hung awkwardly in the air, and she tipped her gaze heavenward, silently rebuking her own ineptitude. She was far better at these exchanges when they were confined to the pages of her manuscripts.

His attention shifted to her eyes, one brow arching higher than the other. “You’ve heard the rumors?”

She lifted her chin in defiance, refusing to envision the whispered tales of his exploits—Italy, Scotland, Ireland.

He tipped his head closer, studying her, his expression hardening a little. “And you believe them, do you?”

At the moment, answering seemed unwise, so she merely tipped her chin higher.

He took a deliberate step closer. “My elaborate escape to Italy with an exotic heiress, was it? Or Edinburgh, where I was supposedly womanizing in the company of poets and philosophers?”

Her lips pressed together, but the words slipped out anyway. “And Ireland.”

At the darkening of his countenance, Emme wished she’d kept silent, but she’d raised her chin as high as it could go, so she felt she needed to do something.

“Ah, yes. Ireland.” His laugh was short and humorless. “Why not add a voyage to the Americas while we’re at it? After all, I’ve so much leisure time and coin to spare.”

Emme flinched a little at the fury lacing his words. Could the rumors about debt be true? She’d thought them inconsistent with owning such an estate or traveling in such elegance, or was he trying to weaken her defenses?

“Why wouldn’t I prefer the wild and exotic over . . .” He trailed off, stepping closer, his gaze fixed on her with a ferocity that stilled her breath.

“Over?” she whispered, her voice betraying her traitorous curiosity.

He didn’t answer. Instead, he moved closer still, the railing pressing into her back as he leaned in, their faces so near she could make out the tiniest golden flakes within the depths of his eyes. She didn’t push away. Didn’t wish to move. All she wanted to know was the end of his sentence.

Could he have been talking about her?

And if he was, what did that mean?

His hands caught her arms, steadying her, and for a moment she thought he might kiss her again.

Air squeezed in her chest to the hurting spot. Something between the rumors and his behavior, her heart, and the evidence of her own eyes didn’t fit together at all.

His gaze roamed over her face as if attempting to extract something she didn’t know how to give. Her breathing shallowed, her mind warring with itself. Would he kiss her again? She tilted her head just a bit as if to prepare.

Research, after all, might justify another kiss . . .

About the Book

Title: Some Like it Scot
Author: Pepper Basham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: April 8, 2025
Genre: Christian Contemporary Romance

She lives her life on the fly. His heart is double-knotted to home. Can two different souls create a life together?

Popular travel writer and podcaster Katie Campbell roams the world collecting other people's stories. She's built a career as "Miss Adventure," known for saying yes to anything new--country, food, or experience--and predictably finding those adventures taking a downward turn into misadventures.

Offered the chance to explore her ancestral roots through a three-week Edwardian experience, Katie finds herself immersed in the beauty and eccentricity of Scotland. In her period attire, with traditional foods and activities, the opportunities for misadventures are endless, especially with the presence of a maniacal macaw, a jealous co-worker, and an all-too-surly Scotsman.

Reclusive and protective Graeme MacKerrow doesn't venture far from his island home. A stoic Scotsman, Graeme's comfort zone has always been family, and after his sister's death, he's even more determined to save the MacKerrow ancestral home and keep those he loves close. The sudden intrusion of a six-foot-one American lass, famous for her traveling misfortunes, was far from his plan.

As this world of folklore, community, and woodworkers-in-kilts tempts Katie to discover her own story, could this one grand series of misadventures lead her directly to where she belongs? And would a settled-in-Scot ever risk loosening his grip on what's familiar to allow a wanderlust writer a home in his heart? How could their very different worlds share the same page of life's story when "home" is in two very different places? But maybe home--and the future--isn't quite what either one imagined it would be. Maybe home is less about a place . . . and more about a person.

Excerpt

Graeme

And then my attention settled on Katie Campbell. Her gown appeared less elegant than the others, and so tight it easily highlighted her curvy silhouette. But her profile held the real mesmerizing quality. Shaded beneath that muckle hat of hers, all smiles had faded. She wore an intriguing look, distant.

Lost? Lonely?

I shouldn’t care, truth be told.

And she shouldn’t draw my attention like she did. No more than the rest of the group with their fancy dress and saucer-sized hats. But she did. In a bathersome way. My attention kept pulling back to the ginger in the ill-fitting frock and an expression filled with unvoiced emotions.

Suddenly, her entire body stiffened, and she turned, eyes wide.

And I heard it.

The sound of Kirsty’s bicycle bell.

Och! How on earth did the little imp plan these things? Did she keep watch for victims from her Grannie’s front porch?

The girl made sport of scaring strangers and with the last week of Summer Term in place, she’d likely have even more freedom. Usually, her antics weren’t a problem because she rarely disturbed the natives anymore, but when tourists came it was like she had a radar out to find them. Wild one, she was. But with naught but her aged grannie for family, she was left to her own devices…and amusement most of the time.

“What’s all the noise?”

Mum’s question fell on deaf ears as Katie grabbed a man’s arm near her, clearly trying to get his attention about mad Kirsty. In one quick movement, the man shocked to attention moving away from Kirsty’s trajectory, but in the process knocked Katie back. Katie stumbled, attempted to keep her balance with arms flailing about like propellers, and then—my breath seized in my chest—she tumbled over into the loch.

Did catastrophe follow the woman!

“Good heavens, Graeme!” Mum called.

I rushed to the door and flung it open, Mum on my heels. Dodging two ladies in fancy dress, I ran the distance to the loch, passing the daft man she’d saved as he stared into the water without one step to help.

“I…I didn’t know. I…didn’t mean…”

The loch wasn’t especially deep at the water’s edge, perhaps 12 feet, but deep enough.

Katie didn’t emerge, but I could see her silhouette below the water, her arms frantically moving but not making progress to the surface. Jerking off my jacket and tugging off my shoes, I drew in a deep breath and plunged into the loch near her.

The cool water soaked through my t-shirt and jeans as I turned in Katie’s direction and waited for the bubbles from my dive to dissipate. A pale arm flapped toward me through the bubbles and then her gaze met mine. So wide, so vulnerable, pleading for my response.

And my heart squeezed an answer.

She pointed below to her skirt and I swam lower, noting the trouble.

The bottom of her dress had interwoven with an old, disposed oyster cage. I dove lower and found the tangle, ripping the knotted lace to free her. With the last tug of snagged cloth, I rose, wrapping my arm about her waist on the way to the surface.

Her arms wrapped around my neck, her body flush against mine, as we broke above the water line. I may have freed the tangle of her cloth, but the knot in my chest only tightened as she coughed against my shoulder, her cold cheek pressing into my neck.

Greer had looked at me with such fear, once.

Only once.

Near the end.

And I’d been helpless to save her.

But Katie trembled against me, a mingle of breaths and coughs assuring me of her fitness, and…well, I fought rising emotions until they stung at my eyes. I was a bloomin’ fool, I was.

With a sweep of my arm, I brought us close to the rock well lining the water’s edge and steadied us against it. She coughed once more before shivering into my side. My hold instinctively tightened around her and with one long sigh, her head dropped against my shoulder, fully trusting me and my strength.

The pressure in my chest tightened to the hurting spot. Don’t trust me to keep you safe, I wanted to say, but the words refused to form. Instead, I went completely doolally and held her a little closer.

Because…truth be told. She was safe now.

Book Spotlight: Positively, Penelope by Pepper Basham

Positively Penelope JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Positively, Penelope by Pepper Basham hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Positively, Penelope Title: Positively, Penelope
Series: Skymar #2
Author: Pepper Basham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: August 1, 2023
Genre: Contemporary Christian Romance

Told mostly through letters, texts, and email, this contemporary romance will charm its way into hearts as Penelope rescues a theater and discovers her true self in the process.

Penelope Edgewood is practically positive in every way, so when, fresh out of college, she is awarded a paid internship to help save a century-old theater on the island of Skymar, she jumps at the chance. After all, a crumbling theater needs the special touch of someone who reveres all things vintage and adores the stage.

Unfortunately, not everything is as it seems at Darling House Theatre. Finances are in shambles, the local theater group is disenchanted, and the two brothers, Matt and Alec Gray, can’t seem to see eye-to-eye about how to run their theatrical business. So, of course, it’s the perfect place for Penelope to shine her own personal brand of sunshine.

With a little help from GK, the person emailing her encouragement along the way, she puts all her heart into helping the Grays save Darling House. But between Matt’s ever-present skepticism, Alec’s tendency to treat Penelope a little too much like the “princess” she thinks she wants to be (until someone actually started treating her that way), a grandfather who is stuck in his grief, and a mysterious person stealing Penelope’s marketing ideas, she’s not sure her optimism is enough to make a happily-ever-after of her own story, let alone The Darling House’s.

Between an adorable little girl, a matchmaker, a sea monster or two, and a copious amount of musical references, can Penelope draw enough confidence from her faith, her family, and her adoration of all things Julie Andrews, to find the thief and save the theater . . . without getting her heart broken in the process?

Book Excerpt

Penelope’s phone went off in her hand to the ringtone “I Could Have Danced All Night.” She’d changed Matt’s ringtone from “Don’t Worry Be Happy” after she learned he was a dancer. Her smile spread so wide, it stretched her face and she dropped back against the couch as she answered.

“An actual phone call? This must be my lucky day.”

He huffed a response. “You say that as if we don’t communicate almost daily.”

“Not by phone calls.” There was something different about hearing him over the phone. A focus on just his voice, his style of speaking. And she hadn’t expected his voice to sound so . . . well, wonderfully delicious. Like he needed to break out in a rendition of “Some Enchanted Evening.” She rolled her gaze heavenward. She was ridiculous! “But if taking Grandpa Gray out for ice cream will encourage spontaneous phone calls, then it’s a huge win for me. Company with your grandpa, ice cream, and a fun conversation with you. How can that be bad?”

He sputtered for a second and then seemed to find his voice. “How did you convince him to go to the television station and engage in that interview? I can barely get him out of the house.”

“Like I said, I must have looked pretty desperate, so when I offered to tag team the interview with him, he agreed.”

“Just like that?” His skepticism was not heartening at all.

“Well, I promised to make him carrot cake cupcakes.”

“And?”

She frowned. How did guess so well? “Help him find some more of Granny Gray’s photos that are packed away in the theater.”

Silence followed for a few seconds and she twisted her finger through the little threads at the corners of the pillow in her lap. Should she tell him about her mole concerns? Could she trust him with her fears? What if he were the mole?

She shook her head. That didn’t seem right at all! What would his motive be for The Darling House’s fall?

“Thank you, Penelope.” His quiet gratitude caught her off guard. Gentle. Sincere. Not that he wasn’t usually sincere, and, well, gentle with Iris. So gentle. And kind. But the way he said it left a sweet swell of warmth in her chest. “You were fantastic. Not just getting Grandfather on camera, which was a huge boon for the theater, but the way you added this positive energy to the entire conversation about The Darling House. Alec could never have done what you did today.”

“I hope it helps.” She squeezed the pillow close to her chest, his praise sinking deep. “I may never rescue a princess from a tower, or fight dragons, but I love showing people their potential, watching them . . . I don’t know . . .”

“Believe in themselves, perhaps?”

She hugged the pillow tighter, a mist warming her vision, so she closed her eyes. Men didn’t usually see her that way. Not all the way to her heart. She often wished they did—former dates who took her for a silly, easy conquest, just a pretty face without a brain. But Matthias had just voiced a little piece of her heart that those men never took the time to figure out, and she realized that was exactly something that a friend was supposed to know. She drew in a quivering breath, not realizing how badly she’d wanted to hear a live person’s voice until that moment. And he’d become a friend. “I’m really glad you called. I was feeling a little bit lonely for some reason and your voice was exactly what I needed.”

“You know that if you ever need personal contact, I could send Iris down for a massive princess fest, the likes of which we have never seen in Skymar.”

A laugh burst out and Penelope sighed back into the couch. “And I’m always happy to have her. Who knows? If you keep sending her, we might even convince you that fairy tales aren’t all that bad.”

“Humbug.” But she heard the humor in his voice. Knew how to recognize it, and the knowledge spread her grin even wider.

PENNED IN TIME SERIES

The Thorn Bearer by Pepper D. Basham The Thorn Keeper by Pepper D. Basham The Thorn Healer by Pepper D. Basham

EXCERPT FROM THE THORN KEEPER

“I’m truly fine,” he whispered to her. “Give me some gauze, and I shall see to the wound myself. You should help Michael.”

She answered by taking his sleeve in both fists and ripping the bloody cloth up his arm. With rebel brow still raised, she looked up at him. “Is it your desire to pass out on the floor as you take care of your patients?”

He scoffed. “Of course not.”

She glanced at the ceiling as if weighing his answer. “Good.” She focused her attention on his sleeve. As she peeled it back and wiped away the blood, the size and depth of the gash surprised him. It was at least two inches long and had barely missed the main vein in his forearm.  “Then you must wish to develop an infection to such a degree we’d need to amputate your arm?”

She reached for a bandage by the sink. Her intention shone as clear as the needling look in her eyes.

“I’m capable of taking care of myself, Nurse Dougall. I’ve been doing it for quite some time before you entered my life.” He attempted to pull his arm free, but she pinched down tight enough to produce a wince.

“Pressure limits the blood flow.” A twinkle lit her gaze. “At least, a certain doctor in my acquaintance told me as much.”

His lips twitched against his will. “You’re incorrigible.”

“And you’re stubborn.” She leaned in and narrowed her eyes. “Not to mention struggling with a hint of pride.”

His smile broke free. He preferred her feisty wit over her distance any day. “Aware of that are you?

She poured peroxide over his wound, and he stifled another wince. “Personally, I am painfully aware of pride.” With gentle and confident movements, she began bandaging his arm, her fingers soft and swift. “It can cause some disastrous side effects, I’m told.”

Her touch, her subtle confession, reignited the deep longing within him he’d felt earlier. Its vibrancy spread through him with a more potent and pleasurable sting than the peroxide on his wound. Attraction? Yes, but something else, an emotion with a great deal more substance. Dangerous. Powerful. And something he wasn’t ready to embrace. Not with a wager hanging over his head that could possibly separate them forever.

Her raised brow nudged his reluctant admission. “Guilty.”

“I hear an excellent remedy for pride is good care, hot food, and a long nap.”

He tried to still the warmth branching out through his chest, to no avail. He internally repeated the words he’d so adamantly declared to his sister. Attraction was one thing but acting on it was another. “Is that so?”

She nodded and pinned the bandage in place. “Wise doctors heed such thoughtful advice.”

He looked down at her hand resting on his arm and another swell of tenderness and kinship gripped his chest. Their eyes met, tightening the growing bond, securing it against his will.

EXCERPT

“How is it you knew what groceries we needed and where to place them all?”

She stopped in front of him on her way back to the last few items. “I know what wasn’t in your cupboards from cleaning last week, and you guys have kept your groceries in the same places for decades.”

“Wait.” He caught her before she could slip away. “You cleaned the house? We paid your mom.”

Her eyes widened as her palm went to her hip, as if the two motions were attached. “I helped sometimes.” She shrugged and turned back to her work. “It always makes me feel closer to you when I’m here.”

Her words, muttered as an afterthought, dug into his conscience like an unyielding knife. Jonathan had known his leaving had wounded Emma, as it would any two friends separating, but…well, he’d never considered how deeply. He studied the back of her head, working through questions he’d never posed because he’d been so focused on making plans, starting a business, adjusting to his new life. His stomach dropped. Too busy running after a dream.

What did it feel like to be left behind in this friendship?

“Don’t look so distraught.” Emma smacked a loaf of bread against his shoulder. “Just because I love your dad more than you doesn’t mean you’re not on my top ten list.”

“Top ten, eh?”

“Yep, right under Narnia.”

He caught his laugh. “Glad to know that I fit somewhere near your cat.”

“Hey.” She pointed a jar of peanut butter at him. “Someone had to take over your spot on the couch on movie nights.”
