Bieldfell. Scotland, 1933—Falsely accused of murder sixteen years ago, American cowboy Benjamin Ford has chosen to hide out in the Scottish Highlands. Reclusive and not afraid to die, he rescues children out of an increasingly dangerous Germany. When his childhood best friend appears at his door, he's not the boy she remembers.

Eleanor Finch's life ended sixteen years ago. In one horrible day, she lost her dreams, her reputation, and her heart. However, she never gives up the hope of finding her friend, so when she learns of Ben's whereabouts, she leaves all that is familiar to convince him to return home.

But Eleanor isn't the only person searching for Ben. Hunters follow her trail. The thin veil of gossip and rumor may be their only chance of a future ... unless the Loch Ness Monster is real after all.

Book Excerpt

Benjamin Ford stood atop a hill cloaked in a mist that hid him from God Himself and his fellow man. Head bowed under the weight of his sins, they pressed on his broad shoulders. But he would carry them if it meant an innocent would live.

The cool dampness swirled around him. The lapping of Loch Ness below created an otherworldly sense. There was life beyond the veil. Today, he didn’t want to acknowledge it. Perhaps because yesterday, he’d taken a thirty-fourth life. The exact number of years he’d lived on this earth.

Or maybe because today heralded the sixteenth anniversary of the first time he killed a man.

What absolution could there be for a man with so much bloodshed on his hands? He opened them now, his sleeves rolled to his elbows, revealing the tattoos gained from his time in the US Navy. Droplets formed on weather-worn skin, the mist heavy with water. It couldn’t wash away the darkness that threatened to crush his soul.

“Herr Ford?” a tiny voice preceded the equally tiny child.

“Yes, Amalie?” Benjamin switched to German before kneeling before the brave little orphan girl he’d smuggled out of Germany last night. Her blond hair hung limp about her pale face. “Are you ready to see Miss Blair? She’ll have tea and biscuits.”

“Will I like my new home?” Her blue eyes shimmered. The poor girl had lost so much in a few short hours, stolen by men who thought her Jewish blood made her less than they. “I don’t want to leave you.”

“Oh, wee one.” His voice roughened as she slipped into his embrace. He had promised her father, his friend, that he would do all in his power to protect the man’s only child. But she deserved more than the damaged soul of the likes of him.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write The Recluse’s Vindication?

Danielle: Last year, I was part of the Our House on Sycamore Street multi-author, multi-genre series with my book The Italian Musician’s Sanctuary. I loved it! So when the opportunity came to join the Our House on Heather Wynd series, I was all in.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Danielle: Not all that long, honestly. The story came together in a way I didn’t expect. In essence, it flowed along and I simply had to keep up. Not all books are like this, but this one was.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Danielle: That the first newsprint published sighting of Nessie occurred in the very year I planned to set my story. The connection proved the lynch pin for the entire book.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from The Recluse’s Vindication?

Danielle: "He would accept the mantle God laid on him and trade his soul so the innocent could live."

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Danielle: I’ve loved stories since I was little and wrote my first one at age eight. I haven’t looked back!

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Danielle: I don’t like coffee though I’ve tried to like it in all sorts of ways. However, I figured if I couldn’t find a coffee I liked in Italy, there was no hope. I mean … not even tiramisu trained my tastebuds!

Q: What are you currently reading?

Danielle: The Collector of Burned Books by Roseanna M. White

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Danielle: Historical romance, especially if it has intrigue.

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Danielle: Besides reading and writing, I love taking nature pictures.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Danielle: Fall! It has all my favorite things except Christmastide.

Excerpt

Philippa felt numb, her heart heavy, not wanting to broach the blackmail letter with Aunt Dolly, yet yearning to at the same time.

Aunt Dolly stood in the nave, inspecting the red-painted scrollwork adorning the now-cream-colored rafters. At last she turned to Philippa. “Out with it, child.”

With nothing else to do, Philippa retrieved the accusing letter from her apron pocket, separating it from Lady Tiptree’s. “This came in the post, and I’m afraid I opened it by accident. I thought it was to do with the school, but it is of a more personal nature. I read it.” She held the paper out.

“Why should such a trifling thing bother you, child? I’m sure it is nothing.” Aunt Dolly took the page, tilting it toward the sunlight. Her body stilled as she read, except for her hands, which began to tremble. When she finished, she looked up into the vaulted space.

“I am trying not to make assumptions, Aunt Dolly, but I’m having a difficult time. Perhaps . . .” Philippa tried to work some moisture into her mouth. “Perhaps you could give me some context for the writer’s remarks?”

Aunt Dolly didn’t answer for a long stretch, almost as if she had not heard. Then she inhaled deeply. “Sit, child, and I will tell you all.” (pp. 92–93)

August 2025 Reading Recap & September 2025 TBR

    My August 2025 Reads:

  1. North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - A story of life and suffering with a fascinating, admirable heroine. An excellent example of classical literature with the exception of the too abrupt ending.

  2. The Rules of Falling for You by Mollie Rushmeyer  - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - An entertaining romcom that held space for serious issues. Read my review.

Expected September 2025 Reads:
  1. With God in Every Breath: A Guide to Drawing Closer to Jesus Through Your Senses by Whitney R. Simpson - Currently reading. It has already made me rethink the way I view my body and exposed lies I grew up believing.
  2.
  3. Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes - Currently reading. This is a LONG book!

  4. The Collector of Burned Books by Roseanna M. White - Read this book earlier in the summer, but it's the September selection for my local book club, so I'll be rereading it. Read my review.

  5. Coal Black Lies by Cindy K. Sproles - My local book club's August selection. I missed reading it, but the discussion made it sound so good, that I still want to read it.

What will you read this month?

Movie Review: The Short Game

About the Movie:

Jeremy Avery is vying for a college golf scholarship awarded to the winner of the State Championship, but his preparation and game are affected by family pressures and having to take care of his younger autistic brother, Ethan. These challenges, along with the pressure of carrying his team to State against an opponent who will do anything to win, leads Jeremy on a journey of discovery both internal and of his brother’s savant-like gifts, that if embraced can create an unstoppable pair. On the brink of his greatest victory, Jeremy is forced to make a life-altering decision, finally realizing his own personal dreams or standing by his brother.

Movie Trailer:

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed watching THE SHORT GAME. This family-friendly film had quiet faith themes about God’s provision and hope for the future. I was surprised by the occasional, mild profanity, but it was not severe enough to make me want to turn off the movie.

Overall, THE SHORT GAME’s story was inspiring and satisfying. The protagonist, Jeremy Avery, faced multiple challenges in his final year of high school: the need to obtain a college scholarship, competitive high school golf, and an autistic younger brother who needed his attention. Financial difficulties beset his family as the pressure mounted. I rooted for Jeremy and Owen (the younger brother). I loved seeing them bond and appreciated the way Jeremy handled the difficult moment that threatened to separate the two brothers.

Four stars for THE SHORT GAME.

How had he gotten here?

Stuck inside a sterile veterinarian exam room with two undeniably cute piglets and the most enchanting cowgirl Bodie had ever come across.

He should hightail it away from there and leg it straight out of town.

He was precariously close to being in over his head. Something he had never been during his long career in law enforcement. Bodie would have laughed at this nonsense, but he was too busy getting his focus straight and his head back in the game.

“It’s not working,” Sarah whispered.

The anguish in her quiet words and alarm on her face had Bodie shoving away from the wall where he’d taken up his post and squeezing in beside her on the exam room floor.

“I’m following the instructions. He won’t eat.” A hitch snagged her words, releasing another wave of worry. She stammered, “If he doesn’t eat, he’ll…”

“That’s not happening,” Bodie cut in. Not on his watch and not to his sweet-natured farmer, who he kept conveniently forgetting was also his potential suspect. Bodie carefully scooped up the piglet and arranged the black-and-white tuxedo pig on his lap. “Let’s take it from the top.”

Book Review: The Rules of Falling for You by Mollie Rushmeyer

About the Book:

She thought she knew the rules of love. Turns out, love makes its own.

The perfect match can't be far--certainly not at a Regency-themed singles' retreat--or so podcaster Zoe Dufour believes. After years of creating content for her relationship podcast inspired by Regency etiquette and era-appropriate rules for romance, she knows her listeners have anticipated this retreat. But she also attends with expectations of her own: finding the ideal modern-day gentleman who can meet every one of the nonnegotiables on her checklist.

Harrison Lundquist, Zoe's podcast producer and best friend's brother, reluctantly agrees to tag along on the retreat to capture footage while seeking a career-advancing promotion. He views the retreat as ridiculous. And Zoe's methods for finding her real-life Mr. Darcy? Downright absurd! But as he films her whirlwind dates, his growing feelings for her are sidelined by suitors vying for her attention. When Zoe realizes her checklist for the man of her dreams might be holding her back, she must decide if she's willing to rewrite her rules and take a chance on the person who has been there all along.
My Thoughts:

The Rules of Falling for You by Mollie Rushmeyer delivered entertaining, romcom fun while holding space for serious issues, namely perfectionism and control. Both Harrison and Zoe learned good lessons and challenged each other to embrace growth and change. This budding couple held good chemistry from the start, though it simmered lower during certain times. It was fun to see them grow closer, though the “third-act breakup” was predictable and my least favorite part of the story. Overall, I enjoyed the novel, and I would read other books by the author. Four stars.
