As he spends more time with the enterprising young lady, however, his interest in her quickly extends beyond his business affairs to engulf his guarded heart.

She stole a sidelong glance at her aunt, still in conversation with Alexandra on the other side of the room. “I . . . I would appreciate it if you did not mention our encounter to my aunt, my lord. She is of an anxious disposition, and I am concerned she may not allow me to continue my experiments if she knew what happened.”
He remained silent for quite some time. Eventually, he raised his brows. “Perhaps you shouldn’t continue your experiments, Miss Grantham, if you are in the habit of placing yourself in harm’s way.”
His words came like a blow, and she took a step back. “I am not in the habit of placing myself in dangerous situations, my lord. Nevertheless, there is an element of risk involved in all chemical experiments. I accept that.” She pulled her golden shawl more tightly around her, huddling a little in its soft, silken folds.
Lord Castleroy looked as if he were about to respond, but then his gaze rested on her shawl. “Is that imported silk?” he asked abruptly.
She blinked. “I beg your pardon?”
“Your shawl . . . I have never seen anything quite like it. That silk is surely not from an English mill?”
“I assure you, my lord, that I am not dealing in smuggled silk.” Her voice was stiff.
“I did not mean to imply that you were, Miss Grantham. However, many ladies are happy to turn a blind eye to the source of the silk items they buy.”
“I am not one of them.”
He bowed, but the skeptical look in his eyes made it evident that he did not believe her.
About the Author
Alissa Baxter wrote her first Regency romance during her long university holidays. After travelling the world, she settled down to write her second Regency novel, which was inspired by her time living on a country estate in England. Alissa then published two chick lit novels before returning to her favourite era with her Linfield Ladies Series, a trio of Regency romances that feature women in trend-setting roles who fall in love with men who embrace their trailblazing ways... at least eventually. Her new Dragonblade trilogy, The Grantham Girls, continues this inspiring theme.
