My Thoughts:

Growing up, the only translation of the Bible I was exposed to was the Authorized King James Version. As I have explored other forms of the Bible over the years, I have enjoyed trying out different translations and sometimes have found that reading different versions provided a fuller understanding of a verse or passage.

As expected, this new CSB Women’s Study Bible included several pages devoted to introducing how a Bible translation is created and the method that the CSB edition used. In short, the creators of this version used what is called “optimal equivalence” which means they placed "equal value on fidelity to the original and readability for a modern audience (xxi)”. Basically, they used literal translation where it fit best and a more dynamic translation where the meaning needed extra clarity for the modern reader. I’m no expert on Bible translations, but I did appreciate their explanation and I find this to be a reliable version that I am comfortable with. The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) currently ranks in my top five translations.

This new CSB Women’s Study Bible feels like a luxury Bible. I like the front cover design, and I appreciate the dust cover that protects the physical covers from wear. Inside, there is so much to love. Each page is full color! There are many photos and illustrations that I found fascinating: the inside of a Bedouin tent, an Egyptian broad collar necklace, an Ephesian terra-cotta lamp, etc. The study notes are extensive and the word studies pop-up fairly often. I especially liked the biographies of notable Christians in church history which seemed inclusive to both genders and multiple ethnicities. And there are more features I have not listed!

I think the CSB Women’s Study Bible offers an accessible version for women of all ages. There is plenty to learn no matter how long one has been reading the Bible, and the 8000+ study notes are bound to introduce new ideas about verses/passages. This Bible would make a lovely gift. I have enjoyed using it. Five stars for this beautiful edition!

My Thoughts:

I confess, I had a case of insta-love when my copy of the CSB (Christian Standard Bible) Illustrator’s Notetaking Bible arrived. The Bible’s beige softcover features an elegant flower in the middle and feels smooth to the touch. It arrived in a protective case that I intend to continue using because I know light colors can easily get dirty in my house. It also has that delicious new paper and ink smell that I love. I know that scent will fade in time, but I’ll enjoy it while I can.

Inside the cover, the Bible includes all the expected pages: a gift page, table of contents, notes about this edition, and the Scripture texts of the Old and New Testaments (not the Apocrypha). Additionally, it includes two built-in bookmarks, a daily Bible reading plan, a concordance, and full-color maps. This edition does not include commentaries.

True to its name, each page spread of the CSB Illustrator’s Notetaking Bible holds space on the outer portions for writing notes or coloring in illustrations (pencils, recommended). I can add my thoughts right next to text and color in flowers, fish, or whatever the illustration is. In recent years, I have found great value in slowing down my Bible reading to focus on specific portions. Thinking on a verse while coloring is an effective way for me to meditate on the Scripture. Some of the illustrations are repeated, but not annoyingly often.

The CSB is a good, but not perfect, translation of the ancient texts. This edition includes a two-page explanation of the translators’ mindset and goals when translating this edition. Regarding gender language, this section explains that gender neutral words previously translated as “men” or “man” may be translated as “people” or “someone”. However, the translators did not use gender neutral language if it required restructuring the sentence. I take this to mean that if the original text was referring to “mankind” or “humans”, then the translators used gender neutral pronouns rather than masculine as some earlier translations.

Personally, I doubt any English version of the Holy Scriptures is truly without a single translation error. As I said, I think this version is good. I especially enjoy the beautiful language of the Psalms. I noticed the phrase “faithful love” frequently took the place of “steadfast love” (KJV). Is there any difference in meaning? I’m not sure, but reading “faithful love” over and over in the Psalms emphasized God’s love for me and brought my heart the comfort that comes with being faithfully loved.

The CSB Illustrator’s Notetaking Bible is clearly designed to appeal to women, but if a man enjoys notetaking and coloring as part of his Bible study, this edition would certainly be suitable. I like this Bible very much. Five stars!

The Study Bible for Women: CSB Version

I was so excited to receive The Study Bible for Women: Christian Standard Bible (CSB) produced by Holman Publishers. I've never had a study Bible and I liked the idea of having one written specifically for women as the last few months I've been seeking to glean truths from studying women in the Bible. This hardcover Bible is well-made. It lays flat when open and has two built-in bookmarks. Without the dust cover, it is a bit plain, so I hope the cover holds up for awhile.

I have heard really good things about the Christian Standard Bible version. The introduction discusses the translation method of “optimal equivalence.” Basically, they stick to a literal translation as much as possible, but if the literal translation would be confusing to a modern day reader, they strive to translate the original thought while staying close to the literal translation.

I won't try to review each part of the introduction because this review would be too long, but to summarize, there are family trees, a marriage contract (ketubah), family milestones, reading guides, information about this translation, and charts of weights and measures.

The CSB Study Bible for Women is comprehensive. There is so much information. I will probably use this Bible most often when I can be alone and sit down for awhile. I estimate it takes at least three times as long as normal to read a chapter, if you read all the word studies, footnotes, commentary, character profiles, hard topics, personal application, maps, charts, etc. It is a lot of information and good if you want to dive deep. But not something I can read when my young children are awake. Sometimes the commentary notes, profiles, etc. are more concentrated near the beginning of books because they are introducing people, families, concepts.

So far, I feel like I have learned a lot. I have not had time to read this entire Bible before writing my review. Overall, I feel the translation itself is solid and I expect to learn a lot. I also expect to disagree with the editor on a few issues (as is probably the case with any study Bible).

Other things to consider when deciding if The CSB Study Bible for Women is for you:

The underlying worldview and editorial commentary (often titled as Biblical Womanhood or Hard Topics) are very “evangelical” Christian. If that isn't for you, you might want to try a CSB Bible without all the study features.

There is anti-feminism bias. I haven't yet seen any definition of what they consider “feminism” but the writer(s) blame it for negative things/situations and expect the reader to accept their perspective.

Regarding the complementarian v. egalitarian debate about marriage roles, the Biblical Womanhood sections seem to fall heavily on the complementarian side.

The managing editor, Dorothy Kelley Patterson, is the wife of Paige Patterson, President of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mr. Patterson is accused of perpetuating domestic abuse through his teachings / counseling and there is a huge debate / uproar at the moment about this. His wife may hold similar views and her personal view may filter into the commentary.

Again, I have not had time to read The CSB Study Bible for Women all the way through before writing this review. I think the translation is solid. I have enjoyed reading the Biblical text and many of the features are informative. I disagree with some of the commentary, but I can still learn from this Bible.

CSB Kid's Bible

I choose the CSB Kid's Bible for my daughter because it uses the text of the Holman Publisher's Christian Standard Bible, which I've heard very good things about. This Bible includes the full Biblical text and 40 full-color pages with study helps and maps. These include things like: Studying your Bible, a topical page for common life situations, and information about divisions of the Bible. There are also pages to develop Bible reading skills and testing Bible character knowledge. The introduction includes information on the translation philosphy of the CSB, gender language use in this translation, how to use footnotes, etc. This well-made, hardcover Bible seems durable and the full-color pages are vibrant and inviting.

My five year old daughter was immediately interested by this Bible. However, she's still learning to read and can't read it all on her own. She and I read portions of it together and talk about what we read. However, I think this Bible is probably suited for older children, tweens, and teens. I'll read it to her for now and in a few years I'll hand it over to her completely.
