Book Review: NLT Inspire Bible for Girls

The 8.65-point font is larger and more readable than other coloring Bibles, and the high-quality white Bible paper makes it a great choice for creatively responding to God’s Word right on the pages of the Bible. My Thoughts:

When they are a bit older, I think my daughters will love the NLT Inspire Bible for Girls from Carolyn Larsen and Tyndale Publishers. The beautiful cover shimmers and is so girly. I would not consider this a hardcover Bible as it’s cover is more like a sturdy cardstock. However, the provided sleeve adds protection and I expect it to hold it up nicely as long as the sleeve is used.

The Inspire Bible for Girls boasts over 500 illustrations. Many of those are phrases or complete verses taken directly from the Scripture passages on that page. Some of the phrases are accompanied by an additional object (flowers, frame, animals, etc.) to color. I especially liked the divider pages between the books of the Bible. These divider pages offered lots of coloring opportunity while introducing some of the key verses in the upcoming book. Very pretty.

In addition to illustrations for coloring, the Inspire Bible for Girls includes lined pages for taking notes, journaling prompts, and short devotional thoughts. I did not read all of the devotionals, but what I did read seemed appropriate for an older child or teen. It’s written with a traditional, evangelical perspective and often asks questions to prompt self-examination before offering a prepared prayer.

Book Review: The Promises of God Storybook Bible

My Thoughts:

The Promises of God Storybook Bible, written by Jennifer Lyell and illustrated by Thanos Tsilis, is the newest storybook-style children’s Bible to enter our home. My husband has read Bible stories to our daughters every night before bed for years, so we’ve gone through many of these. Without a doubt, I know he is going to LOVE the built-in bookmark. It’s a daily struggle for the bookmark to stay on the correct page.

I enjoyed how The Promises of God Storybook Bible focuses on the promises of God and his love for all of us. It’s such an encouraging and affirming message for children and adults. With over fifty Bible stories included, I was a bit surprised by some of the chosen stories. It jumps from the fall of Jericho to the prophecies of Isaiah, skipping some pretty popular characters and stories. (David & Goliath, for one) However, I liked that in included stories less frequently seen in storybook Bibles. As I mentioned, Old Testament prophecies are included. It also dedicates time to the New Testament epistles.

I recommend The Promises of God Storybook Bible: The Story of God’s Unstoppable Love by Jennifer Lyell to caregivers of children ages 4-10. It is more narrative-intense than similar storybook Bibles and sometimes dives into deep subjects. (The very first one tries to explains the Trinity and then follows with talking about how we can believe even when we don’t fully understand.) Younger readers may still enjoy The Promises of God Storybook Bible, but I think older children will more fully grasp its concepts.

CSB Kid's Bible

I choose the CSB Kid's Bible for my daughter because it uses the text of the Holman Publisher's Christian Standard Bible, which I've heard very good things about. This Bible includes the full Biblical text and 40 full-color pages with study helps and maps. These include things like: Studying your Bible, a topical page for common life situations, and information about divisions of the Bible. There are also pages to develop Bible reading skills and testing Bible character knowledge. The introduction includes information on the translation philosphy of the CSB, gender language use in this translation, how to use footnotes, etc. This well-made, hardcover Bible seems durable and the full-color pages are vibrant and inviting.

My five year old daughter was immediately interested by this Bible. However, she's still learning to read and can't read it all on her own. She and I read portions of it together and talk about what we read. However, I think this Bible is probably suited for older children, tweens, and teens. I'll read it to her for now and in a few years I'll hand it over to her completely.
