EXCERPT FROM THE FOREVER FARMHOUSE

She’d never been much for fairy tales, but she’d let herself dream a little about Ryan. The glass slipper had broken when he’d found out about her deception, of course, but she’d half hoped it would be put back together last night.

Obviously, it hadn’t. Ryan was willing to be a dad, but not a prince.

She couldn’t blame him. Couldn’t be surprised, either, not really.

Girls like her never got the prince.

Author Interview & Giveaway: Far From Home by Mabel Ninan

About the Book

Book: Far From Home

Author: Mabel Ninan

Genre: Christian / Non-Fiction / Spiritual Growth

Release date: July 12, 2022

What is my purpose? Why do I exist? A sense of self and belonging are two questions many of us struggle to answer.

And what if you are a foreigner in another land?

How does one adjust to a new culture? Discover their place in a new society?

For Mabel Ninan, born and raised in India and an immigrant in America shortly after marriage, the search for those answers sent her on a journey that led to an unexpected and exciting discovery.

God revealed she was not only an earthly immigrant but also a spiritual one, created with a unique calling to impact His kingdom. Mabel’s renewed perspective imbued her with joy and hope, urging her to share the message with others.

Drawing from her personal experiences and by examining the lives of biblical heroes, Mabel sheds light on what it means to live as a citizen of Heaven on earth. Far from Home will inspire you to:

  • Embrace your identity as a foreigner on earth.
  • Make your home with God.
  • Find community and common purpose with fellow sojourners.

Explore the intersection between culture, identity, and faith in this new release from an earthly immigrant who gained a spiritual perspective.

About the Author

Born and raised in the minority Christian community in India, Mabel moved to the US in 2008 shortly after getting married. In nearly thirteen years of her marriage, her family has called ten different places across two continents and seven cities home. The challenges Mabel faced as an immigrant on the move led to a spiritual crisis that drew her nearer to God’s side where she learned valuable lessons about how to live as a citizen of heaven. Her mission is to inspire believers to embrace their pilgrim journey on earth and boldly pursue their heavenly calling.

A contributor to Guideposts’ All God’s Creatures: Daily Devotions for Animal Lovers 2022, Mabel’s writings have appeared in The Upper Room, CBN.com, Leading Hearts Magazine, and (in)courage.me. She hosts a YouTube podcast called Immigrant Faith Stories where she shares testimonies of immigrants, refugees, missionaries, and cross-cultural ministry leaders. She has been serving in various roles in women’s ministry for almost a decade.

Mabel enjoys reading, traveling, and dancing, but nothing gives her more joy than having conversations about the Bible.

Mabel is pursuing M.A. in Theological Studies from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. She lives with her husband, son, and Maltese pup in Northern California.

More From Mabel

When the idea of this book was birthed in 2018, I wanted to publish a collection of letters to my son. I wanted to keep a record of God’s faithfulness to me in a foreign country. How He became my all in all when I had nobody to call my own. How He gave me His all when I was empty. I hoped my stories and learnings would strengthen not only my son’s faith but also other immigrants like me. But God had a different plan for this book.

By 2019, the book underwent a complete change in its content and organization. It also targeted a different group of readers. I wrote for those who were coping with changes, those who wanted a deeper walk with God, those who found it difficult to belong or cling to hope in the midst of suffering, and those who were tired of going through the motions. My agent and I replaced the title of the book from This is not Home to Far from Home.

After facing rejecting from almost eight publishers, Far from Home found its home in Harambee Press, an imprint of Iron Stream Media that publishes ethnic writers. I was thrilled!

Far from Home is a nonfiction book but it is also part memoir. I’ve described what life was like growing up in India and I also recount a few experiences as an immigrant in the U.S. What makes Far from Home unique is also that the book introduces the reader to another culture, the Indian/South Asian culture. Some parts of the book read like a devotional while others are rich in biblical character studies and teaching.

Overall, I feel the book reflects who I am—an Indian, an America, an Indian-American, a storyteller, an immigrant, and a Bible teacher—though that was not my aim. I find it fascinating that I could be myself and tell my stories and use all aspects of my identity to declare the goodness and greatness of God.

There is a need for more diversity in our stories. I’m not saying this because diversity is the new buzz world these days. We need diverse voices and ways of worship because they reveal God’s power, beauty, and creativity. Testimonies from other cultures can open our eyes to a new way of experiencing God and His Word. They engage our brains and touch our hearts in a unique way. Reading books by diverse authors can enlarge our capacity for empathy, push back our defenses, and even turn our fear of the unknown into appreciation.

I hope my writing helps you see God from a different lens, a different angle. I hope it makes you want to read books by authors from varied cultures, races, and ethnicities.

And my desire, more than anything else, is that Far from Home convinces you that you’re never really far from home. In the triune God, you always have a home here on earth while you await a better one in heaven. A home that will be shared with people from all nations, tongues, and tribes.

Interview with Mabel

Q: How long did it take you to write Far From Home?

Mabel: I started working on this book in 2019. I rewrote and edited the first seven chapters several times. I also waited until signing a contract before completing the rest of the manuscript. From start to finish, the book took two years, but my actual writing time was about nine months.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from your book?

Mabel: I hope readers see the power and beauty of embracing their identity as foreigners on earth. It frees us from the trappings of this world and lets us live for God with courage and passion. Our identity as strangers in a strange land is the key to unlocking our purpose and helping us endure suffering and face uncertainty with hope and joy.

Q: In what setting do you enjoy writing the most?

Mabel: I write in silence at my desk. Music can distract me. I also wrap a blanket over my legs and place a hot water bottle or heating pad behind my back to keep myself cozy.

Q: What do you like to do when you aren't writing?

Mabel: I enjoy reading Christian nonfiction, memoirs, and general fiction. I also love watching documentaries and crime serials. When I’m not feeling lazy, I like to exercise by doing Zumba.

Q: Where can readers find out more about you and your book?

Mabel: You can learn more about my book, read a sample chapter, download free wallpapers for your phone and computer, and other resources by visiting my website, mabelninan.com. I also love interacting with readers through social media @mabel_ninan.

More from Elva

I had an amazing thing happen when first beginning The Sugar Baron’s Governess. My precious husband had booked a week for us in a comfortable condo at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to help me concentrate on my plotstorming—without the “do me” call of our vacuum, washing machine, or phone calls when at home. Of course, he likes to fish from a pier while I’m writing.

The first morning I sat at the kitchen table overlooking the Atlantic, with my laptop, researching Jamaica and especially the historic Maroon settlement of warriors and escaped slaves in the mountains that could play a part in my story. I was also praying for the Lord to help get a good start on this fourth novel in my series. Should I even be including the fierce Maroons in my plot?

A knock came at the door. I had requested no room service, so I was surprised to be interrupted. When I answered it, a black male employee asked if we needed any cleaning done or fresh linens. I almost gave him a short answer, wanting to get back to my laptop, but my ear discerned a British accent. –Here’s our amazing conversation:

“Where are you from?”

“Jamaica.”

I opened the door wide and invited him in. “That’s most interesting. I’m writing a novel set in Jamaica.”

His eyes widened. “You are?”

“Yes, in fact,” I gestured to my laptop, “I’m right now researching a group of warriors in historic Jamaica, called the Maroons. Know anything about them?”

His mouth fell open. “I’m a descendant of the Maroons.”

I got a tingling chill up my arm. How likely was this kind of thing to happen? He further told me he never worked the 15th floor but for whatever reason, had been assigned our floor that day. He told me was a Christian, and he shared several things with me about the Maroons and how they finally won their independence and rights the British government of Jamaica had long withheld. At times, because of their desperate existence, they did hurtle down from their mountain strongholds and burn sugar plantations, as history records.

I decided I had a definite confirmation to include the Maroon warriors in my Jamaican story. They are instrumental in convincing my hero Joshua Becket to turn back to God when his life and plantation are sorely threatened. Whoops, there I go giving away some of the story! Hope you enjoy Joshua and Abigail’s exciting, romantic adventure in Jamaica. Can they survive and make it back to Charleston and a happily ever after?

Author Interview with Elva

Q:
What was the inspiration for this novel, The Sugar Baron’s Governess?

Elva: Glad you asked. The hero, Joshua Becket, was a villain in Book 2, The Sultan’s Captive, in this Charleston Brides series. His stepbrother, Samuel Vargas, the hero of that novel, actually forced Joshua to leave Charleston and go to a relative in Jamaica or face criminal charges for his misdeeds. I kept thinking about Joshua down in Jamaica. Could he possibly be redeemed, turn around for the good and find a happy ever after? My publisher was delighted with the idea and so... this novel was born.

Q: What was the most surprising thing you discovered while researching or writing this novel?

Elva: I had a most surprising thing happen with this research. I was in a condo at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, specifically researching the historic warrior Maroons who lived in hideouts in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica in the 1700-1800s. They were a native populace made up of early Indian groups, escaped slaves, and some pirates left after the Spanish governing years. When Britain took over the island, they posed a constant threat of revolution, burning of sugar plantations, and murdering the owners in an effort to obtain civil rights and recognition. I was reading all about them on the internet when a knock sounded at the door. I had requested no room service to limit interruptions so was surprised to see a young black male worker standing there with the cleaning buggy and linens wanting to know if I needed anything. He had a peculiar British accent. I almost shut the door, but then asked him where he was from. He said Jamaica. I opened the door wide and invited him in, telling him I was actually writing and researching a novel sat on the island. To my further amazement he informed me he was a descendent of the warrior Maroons I was researching.

Q: What do you hope readers take away from this novel?

Elva:I hope they have a wonderful read and enjoy escaping to Jamaica and the high seas in a warm romance, of course. But close to my heart, I hope they also take away the wonderful theme that no one is beyond redemption if they decide to turn to God, like Joshua. And along with that, that God is in the business of giving wonderful new beginnings to those who’ve gone through sorrow and loss like Abigail, the heroine.

Q: Who is an author you would recommend to anyone and everyone?

Elva:
  • Eugenia Price – wonderful, Godly historicals sat in the 1700-1800’s.
  • MaryLu Tyndall – exciting, inspiring pirate and sailing ship romances
  • Robert Whitlow – riveting Christian legal mysteries

Q: Where can readers find out more about you and your novel?

Elva: I love to make new friends! Readers can find out more about me and my novels by checking out my web site at http;/www.elvamartin.com, and signing up for my monthly newsletter on the site. They can also find me on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter by my full name, Elva Cobb Martin.

My August 2022 Reads and September 2022 TBR

My August 2022 Reads:

August 2022 was quite a month in my house. We started into our 2022-2023 homeschooling year. I worked on cleaning out a storage room. We celebrated my younger daughter's birthday. And we dealt with sickness for 10+ days.  Dealing with all the sickness was tough, but it did afford me extra reading time.

Without further ado... my list of reads in August 2022:
  1. Unwritten by Charles Martin - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Loved this book. It made me think - what drives a person to the point of suicide?

  2. Nightshade by Ronie Kendig - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Read my review.

  3. Digitalis by Ronie Kendig  - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Not as good as Nightshade (book 1 in the Discarded Heroes series), but still entertaining.

  4. To Love a Prince by Rachel Hauck - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Enjoyable, but not as good as some of her other works.

  5. Winning the Gentleman by Kristi Ann Hunter - ⭐⭐⭐ - Just an okay read. I didn't like it nearly as much as Vying for the Viscount (book 1) in the Hearts on the Heath series.

  6. Stuart Little by E.B. White - ⭐⭐⭐ - A read-aloud with my daughters. We loved everything except the ending... Margalo!

Expected September 2022 Reads:

  1. The Lady's Mine by Francine Rivers - My local book club's selection for September. I read this novel when it released and I'm looking forward to experiencing it again! Read my review.

  2. Mothering by the Book by Jennifer Pepito - Currently reading and loving.

  3. The Hidden Prince by Tessa Afshar - Currently reading and enjoying.

  4. Prayer Without Pretending by Angela Ashwin - I'm currently reading and learning so much. Wish I had read it years ago!

  5. Suncoast Empire: Bertha Honore Palmer, Her Family, and the Rise of Sarasota by Frank A. Cassell - I've been interested in Bertha Honore Palmer since I read about her as a side character in Jocelyn Green's Veiled in Smoke. I love visiting her estate, Historic Spanish Point, which is about 45 minutes away. Looking forward to learning more about her  and her family.

What will you read this month?

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Q: What was the inspiration behind Forgotten Memories?

Penny: The idea for Forgotten Memories came from reading a real-life story about a mail-order bride named Eleanor who inadvertently made plans to marry a criminal. The story did not have a happy ending because Eleanor recognized him at the last minute as the one who had robbed her stagecoach.

After reading Eleanor’s story, my imagination wandered and “what-ifs” filled my mind. What if something similar happened to a character who, years later, fell in love with a man who robbed her? What would happen when the truth was discovered? Was there any hope for a happily-ever-after? Thus, Annie and Caleb’s story was born.

Q: How long did it take you to write this story?

Penny: I believe it took approximately three months for the first draft.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Penny: I actually have two favorite quotes: “When love finds you, you don’t run from it.” And “No one had ever died choking on ice cream. Or at least, she hoped not. And she had no ambition to be the first.”

Q: What do you hope readers take away from Forgotten Memories?

Penny: For me, writing is a calling and a ministry. I write character-driven novels with faith-filled elements and tender romance. I also include plentiful humor (I, myself, love to laugh!) and memorable characters.

Forgotten Memories is no exception when it comes to faith and abundant humor. The thing I want readers to take away from it is that we truly are new creations in Christ when we put our faith and trust in Him, just as my main character, Caleb Eliason, discovers. (And a warning: do have a box of Kleenex nearby toward the end of the book).

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers would not know?

Penny: Such a fun question! I would say something about myself that most readers would not know is that I was the hula-hooping champion in fifth grade P.E.

Q: What are you reading now?

Penny: My family surprised me with the latest book by Janice Cantore titled Code of Courage, which I will begin reading soon.

Q: How many bookcases are in your home?

Penny: Two and they are jam-packed. 😊

Q: What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Penny: I love spending time with my family. I’m a very active person, so I enjoy camping, hiking, canoeing, bicycling/cycling, reading, running, gardening, and playing volleyball.
