Excerpt

From Chapter 26

Camilla noticed the gunman at the same time I did and screamed, “Matt, watch out!” just as we found cover behind a statue of Charlemagne standing outside the cathedral’s gate. Another bullet bounced off the bronze figure as we huddled together behind its concrete base.

By this point, others in the area were yelling, screaming, and searching for places of cover. I peeked around the statue and could see the gunman walking directly toward us, gun hand extended straight out, simply waiting for his opportunity. He was wearing black jeans and a dark button-down shirt, with wrap-around sunglasses hiding his eyes. He had jet black hair, cut very short. I could see a large tattoo extending above his collar and up his neck.

He fired again, the bullet chipping the concrete only inches from my head. Another shot hit the sidewalk just to our left and then another on the right. I think he was enjoying this, effectively preventing us from fleeing until he managed to finish the job. My overloaded mind failed to come up with a plan of action that had any chance of success. This was the end. I pulled Camilla into me and held her tight, bringing a quick reflection of our similar experience in the burning house. We were miraculously saved once, but….

Camilla suddenly pushed herself away from me and bolted to our right. Startled, I looked that way and noticed a small girl curled up, crying loudly only fifteen feet away. Camilla’s instinct was to protect the child. She would need only four or five steps to reach the girl, but it took the gunman just two of those steps to zero in and squeeze the trigger. After one shot missed behind her, the next hit Camilla in the side, jolting her into the wall a few feet short of her goal. She fell to the ground awkwardly, managing to reach out her hand as she came to rest with an audible groan. The young girl stretched to put her small fingers into the offered hand just as Camilla’s eyes flickered shut.

Overflowing with emotion and rage, I yelled something unintelligible as I stood and tried to move toward Camilla. The man advanced with a silenced gun pointed at my head, blocking my path. A curl of a smile appeared on his thin lips as he looked me over, appraising his conquered prey. It was a smile projecting confidence, success, and superiority.

I hoped he sensed something other than fear in my eyes as I glared back at him. The Bible says I am supposed to love my enemy. Reality, though, is a challenging teacher and, in this instance, I am probably flunking the test.

Author Interview

Q: What inspired you to write The Alcuin Letter?

Jeff: My love for history has grown as I’ve gotten older and, while I didn’t want to write historical fiction, I knew I could use historical information to set up a modern mystery. Even though the story is a bit of an adventure with danger and drama, I wanted my protagonists to be everyday people. I didn’t want a trained agent (FBI, CIA, etc.), but had a desire to explore how common people respond to very uncommon and stressful situations.

Q: How long did it take to write this book?

Jeff: From the first words to the final draft was probably close to ten years. The initial draft of The Alcuin Letter was the first novel I completed, although it is now the second book in my International Intrigue Series. The story remained buried on a computer drive until I pulled it out about eight months ago to work on significant re-writes and editing. The first book in the series, The Medici Quest, took me approximately a year to complete the initial draft and another few months for editing.

Q: What surprised you while researching/writing this novel?

Jeff: I started with the historical figure of Charlemagne to set the stage for the novel, but my research found more and more connections with other figures from history. On the surface, some of the locations in the book may seem random but were all picked to align with actual historical facts.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from The Alcuin Letter?

Jeff: The plot of the book includes a search for a priceless Biblical artifact. When the search is nearing its end, a priest has this to say to the novel’s protagonists (substituting “artifact” for the object as I don’t want to give too much away.)

“The (artifact) has been hidden for twelve hundred years and during that time the word of our Lord has reached the far corners of the Earth. The (artifact) had nothing to do with that. Many wars have been fought in the name of religion and millions have died. Many great acts of selflessness have also been performed because of the faith of the followers of Christ. The (artifact) had nothing to do with the good or the bad.

“The (artifact) is an object; maybe something to be admired, but certainly nothing to be worshiped. If faith comes only by seeing, is it truly faith? The (artifact) might inspire some to seek faith in Christ, but as you have seen in recent days, it can also inspire selfishness, greed, and faith in earthly treasures.

“The only advice this old priest can give is to pray, wait for the Lord’s answer, and then follow His leading.”

Q: When did you first know you wanted to be an author?

Jeff: I first wrote a series of sports-related devotionals shortly after college. Part of my “real” job for over 15 years was writing about sports and sporting events. During that time I began to feel the desire to write a full novel. There were several starts and stops for at least a decade and I probably have the first few chapters written to four or five novels filed away in a drawer. Finishing the first draft of The Alcuin Letter felt like a huge accomplishment, even though the final product wouldn’t be published for several years.

Q: Would you share something about yourself that most readers wouldn’t know?

Jeff: I collect Olympic memorabilia. It’s a hobby that started when I was able to attend the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, and has allowed me to collect tickets, programs, and other items from virtually every modern Summer Olympic Games from 1896 to the present. My wife and I recently returned from a bucket-list trip to the 2024 Olympics in Paris. (5ringscollecting.com)

Q: What are you currently reading?

Jeff: Red Star Falling (Steve Berry and Grant Blackwood), A Death in Cornwell (Daniel Silva), A Calamity of Souls (David Baldacci)

Q: What is your favorite genre to read?

Jeff: Mystery/Suspense… especially those with international locations

Q: What is your favorite hobby?

Jeff: As mentioned above, I collect Olympic Games memorabilia. I also serve as a certified official for many high school and college track and field events.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Jeff: This is kind of an unfair question, as I now live in Santa Barbara, California where the weather is nice pretty much year around. However, I grew up and have spent a large portion of my life living in the Midwest, where I experienced all the seasons, including many cold and snowy winters. To put it bluntly, I don’t miss the Midwest winters. Being able to be outside at almost any time (without multiple layers of clothing) is a fantastic benefit to living in Santa Barbara.

Book Review: The Last Exchange by Charles Martin

About the Book:

“Here’s the catch—even if I make it out of here alive, I need a reason to breathe again.”

When MacThomas Pockets finished his last tour as part of the Scottish Special Forces, he was hired to consult for a film director to finesse some scenes that weren’t working. In a twist he never saw coming, he ended up moving to L.A. to work as the bodyguard for movie star Maybe Joe Sue.

It didn’t take long for Pockets to realize there were two Joe Sues: The Joe Sue the public saw with her perfect life and her Hollywood husband. And the private Joe Sue: the one with the traumatic youth that no amount of pills could cover up, who desperately wanted a child of her own.

Even after their paths diverged, he continued to track Joe Sue’s life. Only a few would notice when the bottom fell out. But he did. And that’s when he stepped in.

One man seeks to answer the question: How far would you go—really— to save someone you love? And in the masterful hands of New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin, finding the answer will take readers on an intense and heart-wrenching journey to the very end.

My Thoughts:

The Last Exchange by Charles Martin tackled the question: How far would you go to save someone you love? To answer this, both the novel and its hero, Kelly MacThomas Pockets, pushed the boundaries of normality. Some of Pockets' actions felt bizarre even after the events precipitating those actions were explained. I questioned his tactics but admired his devotion to Joe Sue. Some readers may be too put off by Pockets’ extreme methods to enjoy the novel, but his every choice pointed back to the story’s main question.

The Last Exchange also explored human brokenness and spotlighted infertility struggles. These elements combined with intense plot action to keep me flipping the pages. I only paused reading the story when real life demanded it or I needed to sit with a poignant statement of truth. Some of the novel’s most powerful lines held spiritual undertones or paraphrased Bible verses. I recognized parallels between the sacrificial actions of Pockets and Jesus. However, The Last Exchange mostly had general market book vibes.

In conclusion, The Last Exchange by Charles Martin proved addicting to read and certainly had its merits. Four stars for this gritty novel with a dedicated hero, truth bombs, and an intense plot that wouldn't let me go.

About the Author

Karen Ferguson is a freelance writer and children’s book author with a background in K-8 education. A grateful wife, mom, and grandmom she is passionate about writing stories that grab and hold young readers’ attentions, while teaching them all about God’s unchangeable truths, and His unchanging love for them. She wants every child to know their life matters. Her first children’s book, Guess How Much God Loves You, was published through Ambassador International in 2022. Now a seven book series, her newest book, Guess Who Is in God’s Family is scheduled to release June 2024.

Author Interview with Karen

Q: What inspired you to write this story?

Karen: It began with a bit of frustration. I was seeing many children’s books promoting anti-biblical principles in ways that would have been unbelievable when my girls were young. I wanted to be part of the solution and create something fun and creative—grounded in the truths of the Bible—for parents and grandparents to share with their special young readers. I wanted something I’d feel good about sharing with my own grandkids. Rising reading and biblical illiteracy rates also troubled me. So I envisioned an entire series that would engage young minds and nurture their faith through dynamic characters and relatable storylines. My motivation was to inspire kids to read and to explore biblical truths, with a book series they could grow with spiritually and in their reading skills. Now, I’m thrilled to use the power of Lucy’s story set within different periods of Bible history to point this next generation to God’s truth and His never-ending love.

Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Karen: Yes! It’s a line that really defines the heart of the message I want to send to young readers in this book series. It’s delivered a little differently in each book, but basically it’s a reminder that, “God’s love is never-changing, never-failing, and never-ending.”

Q: Do you prefer audiobooks, ebooks, or physical copies?

Karen: I’m old school. I love the smell of physical books and the feel of them in my hands. It’s rare I’ll read an ebook, and while I would like to do audiobooks more often, I haven’t figured out a good way to be fully present with them. If I listen to an audiobook, then I’m doing other things and that gets in the way of thoroughly comprehending the story.

Q: What is your favorite season and why?

Karen: I’m definitely a summer girl! Blue skies and sunshine really brighten my days and outlook on life. My favorite place to vacation is the beach, and the ocean is where I find refreshment and inspiration like no other. I could live in flip flops and shorts.

Q: Where can readers find out more about you and your book?

Karen: Readers can visit my website at karenferg.com for links to all my social media sites, and to sign up for my monthly newsletter to stay in the know about books, events, freebies and giveaways. I love to shower my email subscribers with giveaways!

More from Karen

Did you know the cherubim that guard the Garden of Eden have four faces – that of an ox, human, lion, and eagle? You’ll find their description in Ezekiel 10:14, and it’s quite different from most angels you’ll see in traditional children’s books. But you will see them beautifully illustrated in this second installment in the Questions for Kids picture book series, all about the First Family in the Garden of Eden.

You see, my mission from the very beginning has been to present accurate biblical accounts to young readers that are foundational to increasing their understanding of the Bible and growing a solid faith in God.  Kids are bombarded with so many counterfeit messages these days that contradict the Bible, and it’s leaving them confused and hopeless. Is truth relative? Absolutely not! The real Truth lies in God’s Word, and I am grateful to play a part in counteracting the lies of our culture by presenting Truths straight from the Bible, in a fun and dynamic way.

In this book (and book series), you won’t find a regurgitation of Bible facts (that never worked for me as a child). Rather, you’ll find a young girl with many questions about God and life, much like our own children and grandchildren. And you’ll find her loving grandpa who is happy to answer those questions by pointing her to the Word of God. Their adventures into unique periods in Bible history, driven by some serious 7-year old questions, will help pull young readers into the narrative and connect the Bible to their world. It’ll also open doors to faith-building conversations with parents, grandparents, caregivers, and teachers.

The hardest part of writing these books? Keeping it short enough to fit into the picture book category ;).

I pray you and your young reader will be blessed as you journey with Lucy and her Papa Joe into the Bible to discover God’s power, His faithfulness, and His never-ending love.

Epic Book Launch: The Road to Chidarra by Keith B. Perrin

About the Book

Book: The Road to Chidarra
Author: Keith B. Perrin
Release Date: December 14, 2016

The Road to Chidarra, is a Christian fantasy novel based in an age when men worshipped at the altar of their cruel masters the gods, and feared the monsters and strange beings who plagued their lands with malice and terror. The cries of the people are heard, and a stranger is sent from afar to guide, protect, and bring peace to the lands. This however, comes at great cost, for the dark powers do not give in so easily, and the struggle for freedom as always, is paved with blood and sacrifice.

Book Excerpt

The figure rested for a few seconds, picked up the lantern, and slowly walked through the dark and damp crevice. Strange markings and symbols were visible but faded on the floor and walls by the dulling light of the lantern. Deeper and deeper, he went in the mountain before coming to a room that the lantern barely illuminates. More dust and grime covered symbols, and writings are seen on the walls, with carvings of strange beasts and faces of men from long ago. Putting the lantern up to the wall, the light reveals faded wall paintings of ancient kingdoms and battles that have now been forgotten, along with otherworldly creatures that would seem to be of one’s fantasy or dreams, if not nightmare, as if to issue a warning for those who come across them. The figure wipes away dust and grime from the paintings with his hand to see a scratched, tarnished mural that showed a fierce giant battling a lone warrior and celestial beings dwelling among the stars. The air became rank, and the figure decided to move on, looking for another path until he spied dust-covered stairs carved out of rock, spiraling upward.

Excerpt

At closing time, she hurriedly rounded the corner into the walkway and crashed into a man’s chest that had to be made of steel, knocking the cell phone out of his hand.

“Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry.” She knelt to pick it up, but a strong hand on her wrist stopped her.

“No, no, you’re okay. I should’ve been watching where I was headed. I was a little too preoccupied.” He waved the phone in the air. “You’re…good.” His dark brown eyes widened.

“Ginger.” Her name came off his lips in a whisper, a mixture of disbelief, recognition, and a plethora of other emotions she was certain.

Ginger’s eyes trailed up to his and air trapped in her chest. Her eyebrows raised above her glasses, and her eyes fluttered. She suddenly needed water, and for a moment, she couldn’t decide whether to run and scream or throw her arms around Brock Pearson’s neck because she hadn’t seen him in over twenty years.

“Brock,” she’d finally said, still unable to complete a full cycle of breathing. All of a sudden, her brain ceased sending signals to the rest of her body as she stood in the middle of the food court, unable to take her eyes off him.

And him her.

The light chatter in the distance, the music humming from the PA system, and mall patrons all faded as she struggled to pull her thoughts together. Granted the Houston metro area was large enough not to run into the same person twice, but to see Brock after nearly twenty years tossed her off her axis. What was he doing there? Had he moved back to town? What was he doing with his life? All valid questions, yet Brock was none of her concern anymore.

She’d spent the entire summer before her freshmen year in college getting over their breakup.

“It’s good to see you,” he finally said. He had to be in as much shock as she was because his gaze remained fixated on her—a spiral of emotions flashing in his eyes. And she almost hated to see it because something stirred within her.

Author Interview Liana and Angie

Q: What do you hope readers take away from your book?

Angie & Liana: Our hope is that readers will be able to identify and eliminate the clutter in their homes, their schedules, and their minds so they can deepen their relationship with God and with their loved ones and can spend time doing what they love.

Q: Are you working on another book now?

Angie: Yes and no. The writing project I’m working on most right now is a play featuring a professional organizer and her family. I hope to have it performed at the local community theatre I have acted in most and which helped me start my career as a professional organizer. While organizing their costumes, props, and set pieces, I realized that this was something I absolutely loved to do. A few years later, I started my professional organizing business, Shipshape Solutions. My next project after that is to write a book with my husband about our adventures hiking in all 63 national parks. It will be a book of devotions for couples.

Liana: No. I’ve been writing nonstop since 2017 and am in need of a break. I do have at least 3 other novel ideas that I hope to write someday, but for now I’m just taking it slow and enjoying not being on a deadline.

Q: How long did it take you to write this book?

Angie & Liana: Liana had the idea for the book in 2001! She started writing it a few years later. Twice she got negative feedback on the idea and put it “back on the shelf.” We met virtually in 2021 and began writing sometime that year. While we’ve each also been working on our podcast and on other writing projects individually, it’s taken us 2-3 years from start to finish. (To hear the whole story, watch or listen to Season 3 Episode 11 The Big Reveal of our podcast.)

Q: What do you wish you’d known when you were younger?

Angie: There were a lot of things I thought about doing but assumed I didn’t have the talent, passion, or opportunity to do. I never would have imagined that one day I’d start a small business, start a podcast, or write a book. I wish I’d had more confidence in myself to enable me to dream big from an early age.

Liana: That it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. I assumed that I was too old to write a book (my lifelong dream), but at the age of 50 I received my first publishing contract. Four years later I have 4 books published (3 novels, 1 devotional).

Q: Where can readers find out more about you and your book?

Angie & Liana: You can find everything you need to know about the Uncluttered book and podcast on our website (uncluttered.faith).

Angie: For information about me individually and my writing and speaking, visit my website (shipshape.solutions).

Liana: My website - lianageorge.com

More from Liana and Angie

If you were to do a Google search for books related to the topic of organizing, you’d see a wide range of options—from books on decluttering your home to the best way to manage your time. But nowhere on the list would you see the Bible listed as a resource.

Why? Because most people don’t consider the Bible to have much to say on the topic. But they’d be wrong. The Bible is full of organizational principles waiting to be mined!

That’s why we wrote the devotional, Uncluttered: Shaping Your Heart & Home for What Matters Most. We wanted to show people—in a non-judgmental format—that God has a lot to say on the subject.

Here’s one example:

Day 12

A Time to Let Go

”… a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away …”

Ecclesiastes 3:5-6 (NIV)

It was time.

The soles of my favorite silver sandals were worn paper-thin. Ten years of constant use had taken its toll. Every time I slipped those shoes on for an outing, I knew I would slide them off in pain.

It was time I let go.

But I couldn’t. I was certain I would never find another pair of sandals with such unique style and flair. They were my go-to shoes, my favorites, the ones I couldn’t travel without. How could I possibly get rid of them? Yet, my season for these beautiful sandals had surpassed the time they were intended. They did the job they were supposed to do—and then some. It was only fitting that I say goodbye to them so I could make space for a new pair.

It was time I let go for good.

While you may not have trouble parting with a certain pair of shoes, you likely have other items in your home that you are endeared to—your old, comfy jeans; the worn-out stuffed animal that’s missing an eye; the trophies you won in high school that remind you of your glory days.

There was a proper season for those things, but now it may be time to let them go once and for all. It’s never easy, but it’s usually necessary. When we do, we are no longer bound by things that tie us down, bring us stress, or cause us pain. Instead, we can live with peace and freedom.

But we’ll never see those results if we continue to cling to the things that no longer serve us. It’s only when we let go that we can receive what’s waiting for us in the next season of life.

Prayer

Father, give me the strength I need to remove the unnecessary so the essential has first place in my life. Help me make room for that which serves me well and brings glory to You. Loosen my grip on what I need to let go of so my hands will be free to receive all You have for me.

Now, Unclutter It!

When is it time to let go?

How do you know when it’s time to let go of a pair of shoes, a piece of clothing, an unused kitchen appliance, or anything else in your house? Is it a feeling you get, or are there visual indications that an item you own is no longer serving you?

While there’s no definitive guide to dictate when or what to remove from your home, here are a few signs it might be time to part ways with your physical stuff:

  • Dust collecting on the item
  • Tears/rips, broken or missing parts, rendering it useless
  • It’s been crammed in the back of your drawer or closet, and you haven’t missed it
  • It no longer works properly and makes it hard to use
  • You have no idea what it is or how to use it You’ve had it for a while, and it’s still in its original packaging, untouched, or has the price tag attached
  • Its “best by” date has passed

As you work through different rooms or spaces in your house, keep this list handy to help you determine whether or not to hold onto an item. In most cases, you’ll find you can probably discard or donate the item without any regrets. Whatever it was had its season in your life. Now, it’s time to let it go.

Reflection: Which of these signs did you notice most often as you worked through your stuff? What does that indicate to you?

We hope you’ll find Uncluttered to be a valuable resource, not only for your heart but for your home as well.

Book Spotlight: Where Trees Touch the Sky by Karen Barnett

Where Trees Touch the Sky JustRead Takeover + Review Blitz

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Where Trees Touch the Sky by Karen Barnett hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Where Trees Touch the Sky Title: Where Trees Touch the Sky
Series: National Parks
Author: Karen Barnett
Publisher: Kregel
Release Date: August 13, 2024
Genre: Christian Fiction, Dual Timeline

Some secrets have shadows as long as the redwoods are tall.

In the early 1920s, the accelerating destruction of the California redwoods is more than nature-loving Marion Baker can bear. Throwing herself headlong into the work of the Save the Redwoods League, she is shocked to learn that Frank Duncan, a man she's grown to love, is the son of one of the area's worst timber barons. Though devastated by the betrayal, she realizes this could also be an opportunity--if only she can convince him to help preserve her favorite grove from his father's greedy grasp. Is her love strong enough to persuade him to save these precious trees? Or will Marion choose to sacrifice her beliefs to keep Frank by her side?

Nearly fifty years later, in 1972, polio survivor June Turner is deeply proud of the legacy her great aunt Marion has left as a redwood warrior. And despite her disability, June is determined to prove herself capable as a ranger at the recently established Redwood National Park, even if it means taking to the trails with her crutch in hand. What better way to carry on the family tradition of preserving God’s magnificent creation?

When aspiring film student Adam Garner approaches June to help make a documentary about Marion's life, she swiftly grabs the opportunity to spread her aunt's worthy reputation. That is, until they unearth a secret that might shatter the family legacy. In the scramble for answers, June may lose not only her family pride but also her own dreams.

Karen Barnett's beautifully crafted split-time novel, set against the majestic backdrop of a beloved national park, immerses the reader in history that feels as fresh as if it happened yesterday.

When Stone Wings Fly

Excerpt

If the color green had a scent, it would smell like a redwood grove. Marion cradled the bouquet of roses in one arm and breathed deep of the fresh air. This was the one place she sensed God’s voice, as sure as she heard the wind whispering in the branches and the chatter of the trickling stream. Whenever her soul splintered, the forest had a way of piecing her back together. The treetops disappeared into the misty canopy several hundred feet above her head, but it wasn’t their size that gave her solace. It was their age. Living to be over a thousand years old, these ancient trees would likely consider her twenty-two as a mere blink of an eye.

Entering her favorite grove, Marion pulled off her cloche hat and gazed up at the large tree to her left. Sweet memories flooded her mind. Years ago, she’d begun naming a few of the giants after people she had lost, transforming this section of woods into a personal memorial garden. A sacred space.

Welcome to the Takeover + Review Blitz for Beyond Ivy Walls by Rachel Fordham hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Beyond Ivy Walls Title: Beyond Ivy Walls
Author: Rachel Fordham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: August 14, 2024
Genre: Historical Romance

Reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast, a recluse and a young woman discover that the scars of life are no match against an act of love.

Iowa, 1903. All of Monticello believes Otis Taylor has been away fostering his musical genius. But the truth is that his father exiled him long ago, rejecting Otis's appearance and the scars that came with it. Now that he is the last living Taylor, Otis has covertly returned to settle his family's affairs and rid himself of his past for good. However, he soon discovers that he may not have been the only discarded Taylor and begins a tireless search for his missing niece.

At twenty-three years old, Sadie West left her family farm and found employment at the Hoag feather duster factory. It isn't a romantic job, but she's hardly had a glimmer of romance since her beau went off to college, leaving her with no promise of a future together. Desperate to save money and help her family make ends meet, she trespasses and finds shelter in an abandoned building--and is thrown in the path of the town's mysterious bachelor.

Otis's wounds are deep, but as Sadie's friendship with him grows, she begins to fall for the man beneath the mask. The mystery of his long-lost niece, however, is more complex than either could have imagined, and Sadie may be the key to Otis Taylor finally finding his way home.

The Letter Tree Where the Road Bends A Lady in Attendance

About the Author

“Mildred has agreed to help me alter some of Reginald’s old clothes to fit me, and she will make me a mask. What will you wear?”

“I’m not going,” she said, and her feet faltered. Onto her back- side she went with a loud thump. “Oh!” She rubbed at the pain. “I could never go. I would fall there and die of embarrassment.”

“I’m not ready to skate without my teacher.” He sat beside her with their backs to Mildred, who now slept with her mouth slightly open, giving them a sense of privacy.

“Otis, I really am not going.”

“I thought you wanted to go.”

A small patch on the side of her skirt kept her right hand busy as she picked nervously at the edges. “A part of me does want to go, but it’s best I don’t.”

“You lecture me on going and showing the town I’m more than my appearance. Why shouldn’t you go and show them you are their equal, despite your ragged clothes? Besides, you look much better now that you have taken up bathing. At first I thought I’d taken in a stray turkey.”

“Honestly! You’re insufferable.”

“You know I was only having fun. Besides, we are our own definitions of normal. Why can’t homespun be normal too? Come with me and show them you are important and . . . and that you are beautiful.”

Her hand stilled for a moment before moving from her patch to her skates. She worked the leather strap free with an almost frantic motion, her bottom lip sucked in. This new look was one he did not know. Unsure what to do, he watched and waited.

Had he said too much?
