My story has a lot of elements that read more like a Hollywood screenplay. The depth of darkness in my life seemed almost surreal, like a horrible nightmare that I could not wake up from.

I ran from my shame, trying desperately to hide a devastating secret for years, until one day, to my absolute and utter horror, my secret was exposed publicly.

Author Interview with Nancy

Q: Please give us a little introduction to your book. (Perhaps more information regarding what the book is about beyond the back-cover blurb? Or just explain what the book is about in your own words.)

Nancy: This faith-based memoir is my personal account of a time in my life when I was an accomplished professional woman with a successful career portfolio who was blindsided by circumstances following my third marriage. Completely destitute and desperate as a single mom, I was lured into the dark world of escorting/prostitution. In an attempt to provide my daughter with a better life, I meticulously separated into two personas. In my sleepy little rural town in northern Wisconsin, I was known as a doting soccer mom and a successful entrepreneur who traveled often for business. No one knew the truth and I was determined to keep it that way.

After three and a half years, I finally find a glimmer of hope for a way out. An opportunity arose for me to open a legitimate business in my hometown. Just as this new business was gaining traction, I was "outed" as a prostitute.

Distraught by the public humiliation, fear, and shame, I became suicidal and tried to take my own life. Through a miraculous turn of events, in what can only be described as an act of grace, my life was spared.

The trauma from my past left a tremendous and deeply entrenched sense of shame and guilt that I couldn’t seem to run far enough away from. I went to great lengths to keep my past a secret, but as I continued my walk of faith, I began to fully understand my true identity in Christ. What I discovered about resilience and faith along the way is what finally set me free.


Q: How long did it take you to write this book?

Nancy: I didn’t have any aspiration to become an author, and certainly not with THIS story!!! I had no idea where to start, how to start, or what would happen if I wrote it. In God’s miraculous nature, He took over once I said a fragile ‘yes, Lord’, and the whole thing was written in ten days.

It all happened SO fast, from the finishing of the book to meeting the publisher to publishing it, I can only shake my head in awe and wonder at the faithfulness of our Lord. If we give Him our shaky, fragile, little mustard seed of faith…won’t He do it?! I promise you, He WILL!!!


Q: What do you hope readers take away from your book?

Nancy: I genuinely love hearing that readers feel a deepened connection to their own faith journey and that they feel inspired to share their story. To seek healing from their wounds and to know that my story touched something inside of them.


Q: In what setting do you enjoy writing the most? 

Nancy: I like to write in a comfortable spot inside in a quiet, undistracted space.


Q: What do you wish you’d known when you were younger?

Nancy: That God’s love is unconditional and not condemning. That He delights in us. That He is faithful and will never, ever forsake or abandon us.

About the Author

Kathy Mills is a former Flight Attendant who started her flying career at age 19 and flew for nearly 33 years before retiring in 2005 with US Airways. Traveling is still one of her favorite things to do.

Kathy is a member of Kempsville Christian Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where her husband Brad served as their church’s worship minister until his death in 2008.

To those who know her best, she’s an eternity-minded daughter of the King, who loves to share her message that with Jesus, there is nothing this world can do to a child of God, that God can’t use to empower them to bring Glory to God.

Author Interview

Q: Please give us a little introduction to your book. 

Kathy: My book Legacy of Love begins with the telling of a beautiful love story between my husband Brad and me. In the midst of what seemed like a perfect life together, Brad is diagnosed with cancer. The story then moves forward to the time when after a long remission, his cancer unexpectedly returns. It is here where my narrative uses the emails I sent and received in order to give the reader a “realtime” glimpse into not only what was happening with Brad’s health but with me too. It is also even more so about God’s faithfulness, provisions, and devoted love in the times his answer was a “no” to my many pleading prayers. These emails are broken into chapters where I introduce them so as to give the reader a glimpse of the person I am today.


Q: Do you have a favorite quote from this book?

Kathy: “My life will surely bear the scars of my sorrow, but it is my prayer that they will one day be a blemish of beauty that God will use.”- Chapter 18


Q: What do you hope readers take away from your book?

Kathy: I hope readers will take away how God not only helped me and my husband endure the uncertainty and pain of his illness, but how God was faithful to speak truth into my pleas and show me his love is greater than I had ever imagined. He wasn’t asking I understand his will, but he asked that I trust it. I hope those who read my book will know He will do no less for them.


Q: What do you like to do when you aren't writing?

Kathy: I love to travel! I also love going to the theater and concerts or just enjoying an evening with friends.

Comfort is found in God’s Love and Promises.

My longing for more time with Brad is as strong today and will remain in me until I see Him again. I have not experienced one day since Brad’s death that I have not had at the least a moment (usually many moments) of longing for Brad to be with me still. I find comfort in knowing that God who knows my heart understands.

As Believers, we are blessed to have Jesus who understands firsthand the pain of separation that death presses into our souls. I have often felt Jesus sit alongside of me and just grieve with me when I am overcome. I believe Jesus hates death more than we do. I like knowing this. In fact, I need to know this; it comforts me. Our Father is always at work…and He has purposed for good to come from even the most heartbreaking losses. I would never say Brad’s death is good. Yet from the amazing and most gracious love of God, He lifts me up from my anguish and invites himself into my sorrow with His unique joy and transforms me.

God has brought good out of my sorrow. It took my sorrow for the good to be done. I wouldn’t have planned it this way, but I trust God’s plans more than I trust my ways. God will do no less with your sorrow. It’s one of His promises, and God keeps all His promises.

My Thoughts:

I read Return From Tomorrow by Dr. George G. Ritchie with Elizabeth Sherill in a single sitting. The book is short, but fascinating. Some of Dr. Ritchie’s experiences correlate to other return-to-life accounts I’ve read, but his happened earlier (in the 1940s). As powerful as Dr. Ritchie’s visions were, my main takeaway from them all was the immense, undeniable love of Jesus Christ. Reading his testimony greatly encouraged me.

I also absorbed Dr. Ritchie’s wise words as he related his post-experience mistakes and the lessons learned: the necessity of loving others well and following one’s call in life. There are many books on those topics, but Dr. Ritchie’s message felt personal and resonated with me.

I absolutely loved Return From Tomorrow by Dr. George G. Ritchie with Elizabeth Sherill and recommend this inspirational book to everyone, Christian or not. Five stars.

Book Review: Curtain Call by Lyneta Smith

About the Book:

I thought I was having a breakdown; turns out, it was a breakthrough. In 2014, I wanted out of my story. I didn’t want to be on this earth anymore. 

Bombarded by uninvited memories of childhood trauma, I questioned why God would allow so many horrible things to happen to me.

When God interrupted my pleas for help with a simple question—“Will you trust Me with your story?”—I agreed to step out of my stage-perfect Christian life and into the journey toward healing and finally seeing Him as a good, loving God.

My Thoughts:

Curtain Call by Lyneta Smith retells the author’s journey from living behind a façade to living authentically in all areas of her life. The author wove in a theme about the masks we wear and tied everything together well.

That being said, I almost didn’t get past the second chapter of Curtain Call. The author’s story belongs to her, and she has the right to tell it with as little or as much detail as she wishes, but she retold the sexual abuse by her babysitter in graphic detail. Once I read the words, I couldn’t unread them. I had to put the book down for several days. When I returned to it, I read it slowly, but found the frequent timeline jumps a bit confusing. As always, reading about sexual assault was difficult and saddening, but Curtain Call’s narrative felt authentic. I recognized some of the same family dynamics from my own childhood and experience with sexual abuse.

Curtain Call by Lyneta Smith brims with compassion and offers hope to readers struggling to heal from sexual assault. Specifically, Lyneta’s experiences testify that healing is possible for survivors and that God cares for those harmed by sexual assault. While survivors are the target audience for Curtain Call, the book might prove helpful for those wishing to understand and help a survivor.

Book Review: Times of Perseverance by Gregg L. Grossman

About the Book:

Times of Perseverance: Hope and Healing on the Battlefields of Life is a gripping narrative chronicling a Jewish man’s tenacious survival from personal and family traumatic brain injury, while capturing a transparent glimpse into the soul of a wounded man. His brother’s severe traumatic brain injury reveals that God leads a person to himself in times of tragedy. Moreover, his near-death experience which was a result of human error teaches about God’s forgiveness from Scripture. This is not only a story of a Jewish man coming to faith in Jesus Christ and his theological progression to becoming a Messianic Jew. Rather, it encapsulates a genuine, longitudinal account of overcoming life adversity and grief while providing hope, encouragement, and inspiration to the wounded of society.

Gregg’s experiential account of loss from the coronavirus breathes comfort into the wearied soul contemplating meaning to life in this twenty-first-century postmodern era. Hence this poignant story inspires the reader to acquire life purpose and experience restoration on their battlefields of life.

My Thoughts:

My fascination with stories of those who transition from Reformed Judaism to Messianic Judaism or Christianity led me to read Times of Perseverance by Gregg L. Grossman. Part-memoir, part-devotional, this book chronicles various life events and the resulting spiritual lessons. Occasionally, I wanted more details about an event, but I respect the author’s desire for privacy about certain matters. The devotional portions reflected practical, hard-won wisdom and spiritual truths.

Times of Perseverance demands to be read slowly. One chapter per day was ideal for me. The writing is often analytic and academic, but I enjoyed that aspect because it forced me to pay greater attention to the narrative. The journal entries that the author included were stunningly beautiful. Though Time of Perseverance is unique in its format and writing style, I stayed interested through the entire book and found it encouraging during a difficult season.

Book Review: Oliver by Steven J. Carino and Alex Tresniowski

My Thoughts:

Oliver: The True Story of a Stolen Dog and the Humans He Brought Together by Steven J. Carino and Alex Tresniowski offers a story of love and community suitable for all animal lovers, but especially those who love dogs. Much time is devoted to Oliver and Steven’s close canine-human relationship. At first, the moments of extreme emotion felt excessive. However, as Steven continued explaining his past experiences and his devotion to Oliver, I came to recognize Oliver’s loss as equivalent to the loss of a child. This understanding boosted my interest in the story and helped me relate to Steven. Though Oliver was not written exclusively by Steven J. Carino, his voice permeates the narrative as he recounts the raw emotions and spiritual struggles of that time with deep honesty and authenticity.

Oliver stands as more than the memoir of a man whose dog was taken because it tells the story of how the people around Steven drew together in unity. Race, age, gender, and social status lacked any importance. The community – family members, friends, strangers, social media followers, and others – saw a need and responded with compassion and love. Furthermore, as Steven recognizes these gifts, he learns to reach out with love and forgiveness to those who hurt him the most. Oliver lands as inspiring tale about the power of love to transform a life.

Book Review: Occasional Moments of Happiness by Shana Donyaei

About the Book:

All Shana Lesser ever wanted growing up was to be one of the popular, pretty girls sitting at the back of the school bus, flirting with all the cute boys. But that never happened for this shy, lanky girl, voted quietest by her classmates. 

A perpetual dreamer, she poured out all her secret hopes and fears through the pages of her soul confidant—her journal. Seeking comfort in the confidence of a friend, she learned to be a follower. During her teenage years, she found herself in the party scene, searching for her knight-in-shining grunge rocker, someone to make her whole and fill the empty places inside her. The question being, how many toads would stomp on her heart until she finally found her prince?

Occasional Moments of Happiness is a bittersweet and quirky account of one woman’s journey to find lasting joy not dependent on the number on the scale, the guy from the night before who promised to call but never did, or her fizzled supermodel dreams. Set during the eighties and nineties in Seattle’s rainy coffee culture, it’s a roller-coaster ride you won’t want to miss.

My Thoughts:

In Occasional Moments of Happiness, Shana Donyaei bravely shares the story of her life from childhood through early thirties (I think). Much of this highly entertaining memoir reads like a novel. Though my reading speed varied throughout the book, my interest never waned. I breezed through Shana’s early years; but my speed slowed with the increase of darker, heavy content (partying, an eating disorder, mistreatment by men, and sexual forays). Without being explicit, Shana’s experiences expose a dark side of party culture and serve as a cautionary tale.

As I waded through the deep, hard portions of Occasional Moments of Happiness, it seemed the author held nothing back and I loved the depth. Shana’s voice rang authentic as she admitted her mistakes and explained the reasons for her choices. Thankfully, Shana’s story did not end in darkness and destruction. Rather, in the final chapter, Shana shares about positive, life-changing decisions she made. I wish the content of this chapter had been expanded with the same probing depth and shared over the course of several chapters.

Occasional Moments of Happiness by Shana Donyaei will likely appeal to readers who enjoy memoirs. Due to the content of this memoir (drugs, drinking, partying, bulimia, promiscuity, and occasional mild profanity), I recommend it for mature, discerning teens and adults. Five stars!

Book Review: Booked by Karen Swallow Prior

About the Book: 

A life of books. A life of soul. Professor Karen Swallow Prior poignantly and humorously weaves the two, until you can't tell one life from the other. Booked draws on classics like Great Expectations, delights such as Charlotte's Web, the poetry of Hopkins and Donne, and more. This thoughtful, straight-up memoir will be pure pleasure for book-lovers, teachers, and anyone who has struggled to find a way to articulate the inexpressible through a love of story.


My Thoughts:

From beginning to end, Booked by Karen Swallow Prior treated me to a delectable blend of memoir and literary explication. The engaging narrative held my attention as she discussed life experiences and related literature. The author shares candidly about her life and doesn’t shy away from topics like drugs, sex, and spiritual doubt. I loved her blunt, common sense approach to addressing issues in a healthy way that leads to empowerment rather than choosing blind naivete. In short, her life journey and its connection to books fascinated me.

Each chapter of Booked focuses on a literary work, though others may be mentioned. I read some, but not all of the chosen literary works back as an English major in college. While all the works were explained clearly, I absorbed her points more intensely on the ones I was already familiar with. Some of my favorite chapters included:  Books Promiscuously Read (John Milton’s Areopagitica), Beholding is Becoming (Jane Eyre), and The Only Thing Between Me and Tragedy (Tess of the D’Urbervilles). That chapter on Tess had me crying – yes, crying – because of its message/theme.

Booked: Literature in the Soul of Me by Karen Swallow Prior made me want to go back and read some of the classics that I’ve tucked away on my bookshelf for many years. This is a book I’ll keep an read again in the future.

The Waiting by Cathy LaGrow

Minka DeYoung grew up in circumstances that were simultaneously difficult and safe. Working alongside her parents and being unable to attend high school, Minka is innocent and shy. On a picnic one summer day in 1928, Minka slips away for a walk in the woods with another girl, only to be sexually assaulted by a stranger. Understandably confused and hurt, she later realizes that she is also pregnant. Sent away to hide the pregnancy and give the baby up for adoption, Minka falls in love with her beautiful baby girl, Betty Jane. Realizing that giving her to another family is for the best, Minka sacrifices her own desires and leaves the child for its adoptive parents. Almost eighty years later, she utters a prayer asking to see her daughter, but never expects that it will happen. Such a prayer seems impossible, but Minka's story exemplifies the truth that with God, nothing is impossible. Read more in The Waiting by Cathy LaGrow.

At times, The Waiting was difficult to read and I found myself on the verge of tears. It's not light, fluffy entertainment, but a remarkable true story that has the potential to change hearts with its themes of perseverance, faith and love.

The author expertly brings the reader into Minka's experience with vivid narration, intriguing historical detail and a heart-wrenching plot. Some details of the rape are given, but only the necessities that help the reader to understand the story. While it is unpleasant to read about and probably not appropriate for younger readers, it is not overly graphic. I enjoyed how much history was integrated within the story. Not just big events like wars and economic upheaval, but lesser known things like the doctor following the standard procedure of the day in dosing Minka with ether when she came to the pushing stage of childbirth.

The cover of The Waiting is stunning and the photos inside contribute positively to the reader's experience. To see Minka and Ruth (Betty Jane) together after reading their story is such a poignant image.

Readers who are looking for an inspirational, true story of perseverance and faith will enjoy The Waiting. This book is a keeper for me. It's not something I'll want to read again in three months, but I'm sure I'll read it again in the future.
