Book Review: Curtain Call by Lyneta Smith

About the Book:

My Thoughts:

Curtain Call by Lyneta Smith retells the author’s journey from living behind a façade to living authentically in all areas of her life. The author wove in a theme about the masks we wear and tied everything together well.

That being said, I almost didn’t get past the second chapter of Curtain Call. The author’s story belongs to her, and she has the right to tell it with as little or as much detail as she wishes, but she retold the sexual abuse by her babysitter in graphic detail. Once I read the words, I couldn’t unread them. I had to put the book down for several days. When I returned to it, I read it slowly, but found the frequent timeline jumps a bit confusing. As always, reading about sexual assault was difficult and saddening, but Curtain Call’s narrative felt authentic. I recognized some of the same family dynamics from my own childhood and experience with sexual abuse.

Curtain Call by Lyneta Smith brims with compassion and offers hope to readers struggling to heal from sexual assault. Specifically, Lyneta’s experiences testify that healing is possible for survivors and that God cares for those harmed by sexual assault. While survivors are the target audience for Curtain Call, the book might prove helpful for those wishing to understand and help a survivor.

My Thoughts:

As Daughters of Northern Shores is the sequel to Joanne Bischof's Sons of Blackbird Mountain, I read the latter right before reading Daughters of Northern Shores. I highly recommend reading them in order. The two novels flow together to complete the Norgaard family saga. I was especially pleased with the continuity between the two novels – same writing style, no plot confusion, the characters were true to their original personalities even as they changed/developed.

Daughters of Northern Shores by Joanne Bischof engaged my attention immediately and my interest continued throughout reading the novel. The author's flowing prose is beautiful and it carries this tale through much brokenness, struggle, and healing. As with it's predecessor, the character development is heart-deep and avoids simplifying difficult issues. The relationships between the Norgaard brothers are complex and rich. The epilogue was stunning, a truly perfect ending.

I highly recommend Daughters of Northern Shores by Joanne Bischof to anyone who loves deeply-layered fiction with complex issues and authentic characters. My husband read and enjoyed the series, so it is not limited to the feminine gender. Five stars!

My Thoughts:

Who I Am With You by Robin Lee Hatcher is the first installment in the Legacy of Faith series. It's a dual timeline novel with one story in present day and one story in the late 1920s/1930s. The author made both settings feel authentic to their respective times while binding them together with a well-loved Bible and its handwritten notes. Timeless Biblical truths about forgiveness, prayer, and love echo throughout both stories.

To me, Who I Am With You felt more like a fiction novel than a romance novel. While there was some romance and tension, it wasn't a main focus of the story, as is the case in some Christian fiction. Still, I enjoyed watching Jessica and Ridley's relationship grow in spite of the difficult circumstances in both of their lives. Both characters learned the necessity of forgiveness and faith. I especially liked Ridley's character development and the changes he embraced throughout the story.  

I recommend Who I Am With You by Robin Lee Hatcher to readers looking for a faith-filled heartwarming story. I enjoyed it while I was reading it, but I'm not sure if I would read it again. If you have read and enjoyed books by Robin Lee Hatcher in the past, you'll probably enjoy this one!

I read The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers twice before writing this review and I thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Francine Rivers is a master storyteller and has been my favorite author since I first read her Mark of the Lion series about ten years ago. Rivers uses romantic tension, mysterious histories, and authentic characters with questions and issues to weave a story that captivates the reader's attention.

Throughout The Masterpiece, Grace and Roman's pasts are slowly revealed and circumstances force them to deal with the separate traumas they experienced in childhood. Rivers' characters are throroughly developed, with the reader seeing exactly what makes these characters the way they are. Even as temperamental and rude as Roman was, I had no problem liking him as well as every other primary character in the book.

I recommend The Masterpiece by Francine Rivers to everyone – man, woman, adult, or teenager. It's gripping, gritty, and full of God's grace.

My thoughts:

A good blend of experiences from Joni, other people, and doctors provided authenticity and a well-rounded view of dealing with prolonged suffering. Ongoing suffering is not something the Christian world addresses frequently (at least in my experience) and there is a crucial, wonderful message that the authors really tried to bring out – God's heart for the afflicted. His tender mercies to the disabled. His protective hand in each life.

The book introductions were perfect for both those new to faith and those who are not. I found them simple to understand as they highlighted basic information and deeper themes of each book, some of which I'd not previously known or noticed.

I requested to review this book with the intention of giving it to a family member who is serving as caregiver to her husband. My expectations were met and exceeded. I recommend the Beyond Suffering Bible: Where Struggles Seem Endless, Gods Hope is Infinite to anyone struggling with disability or acting as caregiver on a regular basis to another person.

Wild Montana Skies by Susan May Warren

Wild Montana Skies is the first full-length novel in Susan May Warren's Montana Rescue series. The prequel novella, If Ever I Would Leave You, concentrates on Ian, Sierra, and Esme. Although the prequel is not as well-written as Wild Montana Skies, I do recommend reading it first as it explains Ian and Sierra's relational history.

The first paragraph of Wild Montana Skies hooked my attention. The strong opening demonstrated admirable talent and creativity by Warren. Naturally, I wanted things to work out between Ben and Kasey and it was a pleasure to observe their spiritual and relational development. Unique phrasing, descriptive prose, complicated romance and breath-taking danger forged together into a captivating and memorable novel.

I recommend Wild Montana Skies to readers who love a well-written adventure novel with plenty of romance. Warren has officially catapulted herself into my top five favorite novelists and I'll be checking out some of her previous releases while I wait for the next novel in the series, Rescue Me, to be released next year .

The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George

Monsieur Perdu is good at reading people. Observant and insightful, he's not afraid to tell a customer exactly which book to read, even if it's not what the customer is looking for. His book “prescriptions” bring healing, strength, comfort, tears, or whatever the person needs at that stage of life. It would seem the only person he cannot mend is himself. The love of his life left him twenty years ago and he's never gotten over the deep loss.

The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George is an international bestseller and I expected to be impressed. I wasn't blown away by the first few chapters, but I noted and liked the character development of Monsieur Perdu. The quirky supporting characters and charming setting promised humor and entertainment.

Unfortunately, I only read the first few chapters and a chapter or two towards the end. I was uncomfortable with the sexual innuendos/content, but I also didn't care for the profanity and the lifestyle/culture where having more than one lover seems to be completely acceptable. I know such things will seem thoroughly outdated to some, but it's my preference. Had I known the novel would contain such content, I wouldn't have requested it for review. Normally with such a book, I wouldn't even post a review as I feel it's unfair to the novel/author to criticize such things when the author is writing for a mainstream audience of which I am not a member. However, I am required to write a review and so I have given my thoughts on the novel.

I give three stars because what I read seemed to be well-written and it's probably an entertaining book, just not for me.

Tessa Afshar talks about Land of Silence

I so enjoyed this book. Got an email the other day drawing my attention to this video and thought I'd share.

Land of Silence is my favorite novel by Tessa Afshar to date. Like Elianna, Tessa Afshar weaves her craft adeptly. Blending together Biblical events, tragedy, healing, romance and spiritual truths, Land of Silence, enlivens the story of the unclean, nameless woman with a bleeding disease who is mentioned in the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke.

There was nothing I disliked about the novel and much that I enjoyed. Having a less popular Biblical figure (compared to Mary or Esther) as the protagonist certainly elevated this book's appeal to me. Tragedy and healing gave Elianna's record depth and authenticity while humor kept it from feeling depressing. By not glossing over the hardships that Elianna endured, a deeply moving story flowed with strength and spiritual truths I found applicable to my life. Example: “Despair is an invitation to prayer. You can either sink or pray when it lodges at your door.” (Page 329)

I know Land of Silence is a fictional retelling. However, after reading this book, I will never look at the Biblical account of the woman with the issue of blood the same way. I recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction. Land of Silence is a stand-alone novel, but in several ways it reminded me of Tessa Afshar's Harvest of Rubies. If you liked one, you'll probably like the other.

Hearts Made Whole by Jody Hedlund

My thoughts: 

Hearts Made Whole is the second book in Jody Hedlund's Beacons of Hope series. While it worked fine as a stand-alone book, I recommend reading Out of the Storm (The Series Prequel) and Love Unexpected (Book One) because they are enjoyable and certain characters are mentioned in Hearts Made Whole. Of the three, I think Love Unexpected is my favorite.

Like its predecessor, Hearts Made Whole oozes with themes of grace and forgiveness. Character development comes partly through struggles with anger, resentment and grief. The struggle, perseverance and process of overcoming allow the characters to be both relatable and admirable. I especially enjoyed seeing Ryan change and grow. That the characters needed each other to heal is not uncommon, but the fact that Ryan realized ultimate healing comes from God, not another person, is an important thought missing in many of today's inspirational romance books. Some unexpected suspense also heightened the story's appeal. The plot didn't drag, but the suspense of “who did it, what really happened, and is there any way they can be together?” definitely kept me reading later into the night than I should have.

I fully recommend Hearts Made Whole by Jody Hedlund to fans of historical romances. It's a keeper for my bookshelf. :)

A Love Like Ours is Becky Wade's third book featuring the Porter brothers of Holley, Texas and it is my favorite. It works fine as a stand-alone story, but Undeniably Yours and Meant to Be Mine are good as well, so I recommend reading them before A Love Like Ours.

Wade's writing style is good as usual. At no point did the plot drag or rush. Jake and Lyndie are well-developed characters with flaws and strengths that make them authentic, but still remarkable. However, the story is what really enchanted me with this book. I felt like cheering as Lyndie took Silver Leaf out to attempt his first run. Lastly, I appreciated the compassion with which the author treated Jake's PTSD. As someone who's been there, I felt Wade did an excellent job in dealing with the issue without making it too tidy, too easily fixed.

I recommend A Love Like Ours by Becky Wade to fans of clean, Christian romances. It's a keeper for me as I have no doubt I'll read this series again in the future.

The Deliverer by Kathi Macias

The Deliverer by Kathi Macias is the third book in the Freedom Series. I highly recommend reading these books in order although some back story is given. I had expected this to be the final book in the series. However, there may be another book forthcoming as certain situations with some characters were left open at the end. The plot of this story is far more complex than a small synopsis can provide and that is one of the beauties of Macias' writing. Like the prior two books in the series, I was challenged by the topics presented in the book, but still enjoyed reading the characters' stories, particularly Mara's. It is far too easy to ignore or forget that human trafficking does exist and this series is a wake-up call for Christians to arise and fight the evil that is far closer to home than most of us realize. I recommend this book to any mature reader because it does deal with dark, though not overly explicit, topics.

A Heart Revealed by Julie Lessman

Despite the fact that Emma Malloy's husband is an abusive drunk who lives in another country, she is determined to remain faithful to her marriage vows and live a life pleasing to God. In the years since she left Dublin, the pain of her past has faded and she has experienced the fulfillment of becoming who God wants her to be. Will God use these feelings to open her heart to something more? Or is any relationship with Sean O'Connor doomed to fail?

Julie Lessman could not have chosen a more appropriate title for this story than A Heart Revealed. Lessman's writing was excellent and I loved how she weaved the stories of so many different characters together to create a beautiful story. Inside the authentic characters and engaging plot, a stirring theme reminiscient of Isaiah 61 is embedded. As the story progresses we see mending of the brokenhearted, freedom for those bound by the past, comfort for those who mourn, the exchange of beauty for ashes, joy in place of mourning, and the garment of praise substituted for the spirit of heaviness.

As the second book in the Winds of Change series, A Heart Revealed had plenty of background information and I didn't feel that I was missing anything vital. The few unexplained tidbits were actually an effective teaser that made me want to read the other books. Personally, I loved the story, but I want to give fair warning: there are some spicy (but not erotic) romance scenes and the characters subscribe to Catholicism. A Heart Revealed was not only entertaining, but also uplifting. I recommend it to all fans of Christian romance.

Did you know that it's okay to crave and not feel guilty about it? Made to Crave is a book for any Christian woman, regardless of her weight or waistline. Terkeurst advocates that shifting to healthier eating habits, whether you are overweight or at a healthy weight, is actually a way to draw closer to God. I confess, I never thought of it that way before this book. However, she makes valid points and backs it up with Scripture. The author writes in such a way that it feels like she's a close friend sitting across the table from you. While the book is easy to read and has a good dose of humor, addressing the deeper issues in this book is not so easy. The author freely admits that the journey will be hard, but follows it up with encouragement that it can be accomplished.

Some prominent thoughts from this book:

1. Perspective changes things. It's better to view the process as embracing healthy choices rather than having to repeatedly deny myself the foods I want. It's about being healthy, not about self-denial.
2. Use a food craving as a prompting to pray. It's not very appealing when that brownie is sitting in front of me begging me to eat it, but it is very effective.
3. I was made for more. I was made for more than repetitive cycles of failure. I was made for victory and freedom.

There were plenty of other good points, as well. I recommend this book to any woman who desires to grow closer to God as she grows closer to her ideal weight.

Pearl In The Sand by Tessa Afshar

Rahab's choice to join the nation of Israel was easy to make, but hard to hold to. She faces rejection and Salmone, the man helping her family integrate into Israel, downright terrifies her. She knows what he sees – a prostitute, impure, unlovable woman. What she does not know is that miracles happen. Miracles of love, healing and reconciliation.

The story of Rahab has never been more romantic or powerful than it was while reading this book. I waited several days after reading the book to write this review. I just wanted to sit on it and think. I also went to the books of Joshua and Matthew in the Bible to read the times that Rahab was mentioned. I'm happy to say that the basis of the book seems to be right in line with Scripture. Of course, some of it is fictional. The Bible tells nothing of how Rahab and Salmone met and fell in love. However, the fictional parts were told in such a way that it was believable. The plot was well-written and filled with romance – a wonderful combination.

Pearl in the Sand is definitely a keeper. I highly recommend it and I have no doubt that I will read it again.

Somewhere To Belong

Johanna Ilg loves Amana, the plain community that she has always lived in. Though she longs to visit the outside world, she finds fulfillment by serving her people and her God. When the Schumacher family moves from Chicago to Amana, Johanna is given the responsibility of helping Berta Schumacher learn her responsibilities. The problem is that Berta does not want to be in Amana and she certainly does not want to work in a kitchen all day. Despite difficult moments, a unique friendship is formed between the two young women. When these young women discover family secrets that threaten to change their entire lives, they will only find restoration by pursuing the will of God. But will either of them be willing to face the difficult challenge of forgiveness?

I enjoyed this book, but it was one I would suggest renting from the library before buying. It was okay, but some things were confusing. I don't think Amana is an Amish village, but it has a lot of plain living characteristics. If you really like Amish stories, then you will probably love this book. The plot has a sweet love story woven within it, but focuses mostly on the lives of the two young women.
I suspect that there may be a sequel featuring more of Berta's life. The ending was very open. :)

Shades of Blue by Karen Kingsbury

Emma Landon and Brad Cutler shared a remarkable, beautiful love until a terrible mistake tore them apart, leaving them wounded and unable to heal. Years later, Brad Cutler has moved on with his life and is about to marry the love of his life when he realizes that he can not move on to the next chapter of life and until he has closure about his first love. When Brad announces he has to find Emma and close that chapter of his life, the wedding is put on hold and his relationship with his fiancée is jeopardized. Following what he believes is God's will, he searches for Emma and the healing that neither of them have ever known.

I have read approximately 10 novels by Karen Kingsbury and this one is by far my favorite. I could not put it down! I fluctuated with the characters. First, I wanted Brad to be with Emma, then I wanted him to be with Laura, back and forth I went. I cried with the characters as they worked through the deepest pain of their lives and I rejoiced as they found the healing they had needed for so long. This book is a great read and a gentle, healing story about the difficult topic of abortion.

Reunion by Karen Kingsbury and Gary Smalley

The day Elizabeth Baxter found the lump in her breast changed the Baxter family forever. As Ashley and Landon, plan for their wedding, Elizabeth plans a family reunion. She knows God is going to heal her body and let her grow old with her family, but just in case, she wants to see them all again. As the time and cancer progresses, Elizabeth finds herself drawn to the oldest secret that she and her husband have kept. A secret she's still not willing to tell. When it seems that none of her prayers will be answered the way she wants to them too, she surrenders all her hopes and dreams to God, only too find that all her dreams have been fulfilled – just not in the way she expected.

Reunion, the fifth and final book in the Redemption Series, by Karen Kingsbury & Gary Smalley was by far the most potent of all the books and is my personal favorite of the Redemption series. I loved this book though at times, it made me cry. I confess that if there were no books to follow this one, I would have hated the ending. However, as I understand it, The Firstborn Series, follows this series and continues with the life and struggles of Dayne Matthews. I'm looking forward to checking those out from the library soon. Kingsbury did an excellent job of introducing the new characters into this book which I understand will be featured in later book series.

Rejoice by Karen Kingsbury & Gary Smalley

Peter and Brooke West are both successful doctors with two lively, beautiful daughters. On the outside, things seem fine. But behind the doors of their home, their marriage is struggling. When Hayley,their youngest daughter, is the victim of a drowning accident, everything seems to be falling apart. As Hayley struggles for her life, their marriage disintegrates. Both Peter and Brooke struggle with feelings of guilt towards themselves and each other. Peter relieves his pain in illegal ways and Brooke finds that she must surrender all to her God – her daughter, her marriage, even her life – if there is to be any hope of a future for their family and any reason to rejoice.

Rejoice is the fourth book in the Redemption Series by Karen Kingsbury and Gary Smalley. I didn't like this book in the beginning, but once I got about a fourth of the way through it, I started loving it. It's not a book to read if you are depressed, but as with all the books in this series, I admire the authenticity that the authors used when creating the characters and the plot.

Healing Sands by Nancy Rue & Stephen Arterburn

Healing Sands by Nancy Rue and Stephen Arterburn is a story of surrender to God. When photojournalist, Ryan Coe finds herself in a desperate situation that she can not control, solve, or manipulate, she is forced to realize her insufficiency and anger. Her marriage has ended in divorce and her son, who refuses to speak to her, is arrested for attempted murder on a Hispanic teen. When it looks as if she will lose it all, including her sanity, she turns to Healing Choices counseling looking for a quick fix to all of her problems. What she finds is a need that is deeper than she ever imagined.

This book was so authentic that at first I did not like it. I look for authenticity in all books that I read, no matter the genre, but I was a bit unprepared for the deep authenticity that the authors used in this book. Rue and Arterburn did not gloss over life's problems with a layer of sugar and a sweet happily ever after. Instead, they opened up all of Ryan's pain and anger and scooped it all out to be dealt with and healed. How often in life do we prefer to gloss the pain over and ignore it? This books reaches into the heart of the reader and reminds them that ignoring issues do not make them disappear. At the same time, it offers healing from the Great Physician. The book may be fiction, but it is authentic enough to minister to hurting souls in this very real, painful, non-fiction world. I must confess that I was a bit disturbed that there was on very obvious situation between two people that was never resolved. Perhaps the authors plan to address it in another book in the series? If not, I would be disappointed.
